Pride Week Have you made a pledge to be an LGBTQ+ ally

Itrsquos LGBTQ+ Pride Week and teams across the Northern Care Alliance have beencelebrating Pride all week by making a pledge and getting involved with a range of greatactivities organised by our LGBTQ+ staff networks

Pride Week helps to shine a light on the experiences of our LGBTQ+ colleagues and thefantastic work that is taking place via our staff networks to identify improvements to ensureour organisation is able to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ staff and patients and reduce theinequalities people face across our communities

The theme of this yearrsquos Pride is lsquoMarch for Peacersquo and there is a clear call for strongauthentic allyship and for us all to come together respect the labels embrace differenceand the right for everyone to be able to live their lives the way they want to in peace

Did you know that 25 of LGBTQ+ people have experienced some form of discriminationrelated to their sexuality from healthcare staff rising to 60 in transgendered people(Stonewall 2018)

A recent ED staff survey undertaken at Salford Care Organisation by Katie Hemmings-Trigg and Sarah Cottams has highlighted that there is a clear need for better educationamongst our staff across all grades about issues affecting our LGBTQ+ and transcolleagues As a result the ED team are now working with the Equality and Diversity teamand LGBT Forum to look at ways to raise awareness and educate staff with short bites oftraining at handover

Why not make a pledge this Pride Week to support our LGBTQ+ staff and patients bycommitting to be an ally Being an ally means being more aware of your personal impactaccepting how others feel asking questions when yoursquore not sure and challengingcomments and behaviours which are discriminatory Download a pledge card here

If yoursquod like to find out more about how you can join one of the NCArsquos LGBTQ+ staffnetworks please contact Oliver Butterworth at oliverbutterworthpatnhsuk or MoneezaIqbal at Moneezaiqbalsrftnhsuk
