It runs through places where the worship of St. Emma started in the Middle Ages and continues until today, and covers areas which were once owned by Emma and are thematically closely related to St. Emma. It runs through the regions of Koroška, Štajerska, Dolenjska and Gorenjska and is associated with the route in Austria bearing the same name (Hemmapilgerweg). It links buildings built on her initiative or on her estates; monuments depicting her as well as places and areas from where people pilgri- maged in large groups to worship St. Emma. The final destination of pilgrimage or the centre of worship is the tomb of St. Emma in the crypt of the cathedral in Krka (Gurk). EMMA’S PILGRIMAGE ROUTE IN SLOVENIA Saint Emma represents an important link between the Slovenes and Austrians. In the framework of the “Emma’s Pilgrimage Route” project, car- ried out in the context of the Interreg IIIA SI-AT programme, 2006 marked the beginning of a revival of Emma’s Pilgrimage Route in Slovenia. Then, the route was partially laid out and marked in the portion of the route between Sv. Ema near Podčetrtek and Šentru- pert on Dolenjska. The project abbreviated to Pilgrimage Europe SI-AT is being run as part of the Operational Programme Slovenia–Austria 2007–2013 and continues the revival of Emma’s Pilgrimage Route (687 km), which will now be fully marked. Emma’s pilgrimage route from Reht above Mežica to Ljubelj From Pliberk (Bleiburg), Emma's Pilgrimage Route leads to the former border crossing of Reht/Raunjak and descends to Mežica. Then, it leads from Pikovo or Podpeca to Črna na Koroškem and further through Javorje to the Naravske ledine hut. The route passes the Ivarčko Lake and goes through Sele to Slovenj Gradec and continues to Dravograd. Following an ascent to the village of Ojstrica on Kozjak, it runs to Pernice and further through Bistriški jarek and Sveti Trije Kralji to Radlje ob Dravi. Emma's Pil- grimage Route now leads across the River Drava to Vuhred and further to the Pohorje hills. The route leads across Janževski Vrh, Lehen and Lovrenc na Pohorju to Ruše. Through Limbuš, Pekre and Zgornje Radvanje, it then leads to Maribor. It passes the cathedral and Piramida, and from there continues to Malečnik and onwards through Duplek and Vurberk to Ptuj. Again, it crosses the River Drava and takes us through Hajdina to Ptujska Gora. Now, the route turns across Haloze below Donačka gora and through Rogatec and Rogaška Slatina to Sv. Ema. Then it leads through Podčetrtek to Olimje and onwards through Virštanj to Pilštanj. Here, there is a direct way to Kozje. However, the main direction of Emma's Pilgrimage Route MARKING OF EMMA’S PILGRIMAGE ROUTE IN SLOVENIA Emma’s Pilgrimage Route in Slovenia is marked in accordance with the Mountain Paths Act (Official Journal of the RS 61/2007) and the Instructions for marking thematic hiking trails. Where Emma’s Pilgrimage Route runs along the trail of the mountain path, it is marked with a white-and-red Knafelc blaze (Knafelčeva markacija), direction arrow and a red sign with white text. The remaining part of Emma’s Pilgrimage Route is marked with a whi- te-and-yellow round sign, a yellow direction arrow and a yellow sign with black text for thematic hiking trails. At the main crossroads, direction plates are supplemented by a label with the logo of Emma’s Pilgrimage Route. In the area between Sv. Ema near Podčetrtek and Šentrupert in the Dolenjska region, Emma’s Pilgrimage Route is additionally marked with wooden pla- tes with the route logo. The most important locations on Emma’s Pilgrimage Route are equipped with information panels with all the important information about the path. You can collect the stamps in the Pilgrimage Booklet. EMMA’S PILGRIMAGE ROUTE KOZJANSKI PARK Podsreda 45, 3257 Podsreda Tel.: +386 (0)3 800 71 00 E-mail: [email protected] www.kozjanski-park.si Between Ptujska Gora and Virštanj, between the Podsreda Castle and Goli Vrh, in the Krško Area, between Borovnica and Smrečje as well as between Zapreval and Škoa Loka, Emma’s Pilgrimage Route runs along a part of the European footpath E7 SLO. Between Kucelj and Iška Gorge, it runs along a part of the E6 SLO. Both paths are marked with yellow-and-red signs. leads through Lesično, Zagorje and Planina pri Sevnici to Bohor and then down to Kozje. From Kozje, the route continues to Podsreda and straight on past Podsreda Castle through Križe and Brestanica to Krško. Aſter crossing the River Sava, the path is routed through Leskovec, Senuše and Raka to Bučka. Then it continues through Škocjan to Šmarješke Toplice. The route now ascends to the village of Žaloviče and continues along the Radulja val- ley to Trebelno, where it descends to Mokronog. From Mokronog, Emma’s pilgrimage route leads to Šentrupert on Dolenjska and onwards past the Škrljevo Castle to Mirna. Then it leads to Trebnje and through Vrhtrebnje to Šentvid pri Stični and Stična to Pristava nad Stično. From Pristava it conti- nues across Obolno and Kucelj to Grosuplje and onwards past cave Župa- nova jama to Želimlje. From Želimlje it continues through the Iška Gorge to Rakitna, and then descends to Borovnica. Through Verd and Vrhnika, it then leads across Zaplana and Smrečje to Vrh Sv. Treh Kraljev, descending through Goropeke to Žiri. From Žiri, Emma's Pilgrimage Route ascends over Ledinica to Kladje pass, from where it leads past Koča na Ermanovcu hut and over Slajka to Hotavlje. The ascent over Malenski Vrh to Javorje fol- lows, from where the route continues through Četena Ravan and Zapreval to Lubnik. From Lubnik the route descends to Škoa Loka, where it conti- nues through Crngrob to Kranj. Following an ascent to Sveti nad Kranjem, it leads over Sv. Mohor and Kališe to Železniki. From Železniki, the route ascends to Prtovč, from where it leads through Torka and Zgornje Danje to Soriška planina. Now, it descends to Bohinjska Bistrica, and then ascends through Bitnje and Jereka to Pokljuka. In Goreljek, it continues over Grajska planina and Rečiška planina to Bled, from where it leads through Podhom and Zasip and over the River Sava Dolinka to Breg and onwards to Vrba. Past Prešeren’s birth place, Emma’s Pilgrimage Route continues to Be- gunje na Gorenjskem and onwards through the Draga Valley to Prevala. Finally, it leads to the Ljubelj pass (Loiblpass), from where it runs onto the Austrian territory and continues to Borovlje (Ferlach) and onwards to Krka (Gurk). EMMA’S PILGRIMAGE ROUTE IN AUSTRIA – Hemmapilgerweg In Austria, there is a star-like network of Emma’s pilgrimage routes, leading from all the directions in Austria and Slovenia toward the final destination, the tomb of St. Emma in Krka (Gurk). Altogether there are eight directions leading from: Admont and St. Hemma – Edelschrott in Syria, from Millstatt, Ossiach, Turrach and Kar- nburg in Carinthia and from Ljubelj and Črna na Koroškem in Slovenia. Emma’s Pilgrimage Route in Austria is taken care of by the Catho- lic Church of Carinthia, Gurk diocese (Katholische Kirche Kärnten, Diözese Gurk).
