Tirabad Review From the 29th of September to the 6th of October, a squad of 30 Emmbrook PE students travelled to Tirabad in order to participate in the Y9 GCSE Sports Tour. Throughout the week, students were able to participate in a wide range of outdoor adventurous activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, mountain hiking, problem solving and gorge walking. In addition to these activities, the netball and football teams also enjoyed a morning training session and a fixture against Crickhowell High School. Tuesday’s football and netball training sessions showcased the students’ determination, focus, commitment and maturity towards the challenging fixture ahead.

On Wednesday we travelled to Crickhowell School to put our developed skills to the test. Unfortunately both teams suffered defeats to very well drilled Crickhowell opposition. Our top netball scorers however were Annabel Face (2) and Grace Coyne (1). The top football scorer was Tom Wallace (1). Despite our defeats, the Emmbrook students were proud to represent their school and showed excellent leadership, team work and communication skills as well as physical abilities throughout the games. All 30 students were brilliant ambassadors for the Emmbrook GCSE PE programme.

Player of the netball match was awarded to Charlotte Loughrey, as voted for by the Y9 Crickhowell netball team, and player of the football match was awarded by Mr Tichband to Sam Dickinson.

A huge thank you to all the students who went on the trip as their excellent behaviour and hard work helped them complete every challenge thrown at them. Mr. Tichband and Miss Matthews Teachers of PE

Senior Chamber Concert

Music Trip – Matilda What an absolute privilege it was to spend time with the forty fantastic students who went on this trip! They behaved impeccably, were full of great humour and shared opinions about the musical in a really insightful and impressive way on our return journey. Well done to you all for being such a credit to yourselves, your families and The Emmbrook! (I have already had a few suggestions about what we could see next … any more thoughts?)

Y8 Girl Football Tournament Winners Our Y8 girls WON the SWIFT Wokingham football on Wednesday 11th October. They beat Holt, Piggott and Bulmershe in their pool and then beat St Crispins in the Semi-Finals on penalties. They subsequently defeatd Bohunt in the final after a sudden death round of penalties.

We are incredibly proud of the team and their achievements. Cadets – Tri Service Competition Last week we were proud to learn about Matthew Keaney (Y9) who took part in a Tri Service Competition as part of his membership at 10 PL Wokingham unit Berkshire Army Cadet Force. Matthew was part of the B team that took on the Air cadets, CCF cadets and the Sea Cadets . The A team of the Army cadets won the competition. It was fantastic to see his team work, leadership, navigation skills, command tasks & problem solving skills put to the test. Kim Scott Administrator

Erin Prowse – Fantastic Fundraising • PE Extra-c curricula opportunities

Erin Prowse (Y7) had 16 inches cut off her hair at the weekend in order to raise money for the Little Princess Trust. She has raised £380 so far and has donated her hair so that it can be made into a wig for other little girls, who have lost their own hair due to illness. Sixth Form Fundraising Week Since the start of the academic year, the Sixth Form have been organising and preparing 'Fundraising Week'. Each year the Sixth Form takes responsibility for raising money and spreading awareness for a local charity. This year, the chosen charity dedicated to the money raised is a charity called 'Mind' which supports people suffering from mental health issues,. Every year, one in four people will experience mental health problems and for every £1 donation received, Mind spend 85p on charitable work. In parliament, 75% of the priorities set out by Mind were taken on by the Government in the Mental Health Taskforce Report. There are 390,307 people using local Mind services in England and Wales. Mind have even reached the workplace with 7,687 employers involved with a Workplace Wellbeing programme. Every little donation is incredibly important and appreciated. Throughout the week, at lunch time, different events were held in the main hall. Students from all years were welcome to come to the events on show for either 50p per day or a wrist band at £2 for the whole week. As well as the entertainment on offer, cakes, sweets and a non school uniform day were also used to raise money. Not only does the school get to raise money for a great cause but all year groups were able to integrate. Here are some comments from students about the week: 'I feel it's a great event to bring the whole school together all the way from year 7 to year 13. It's a fun week which I always look forward to at the beginning of the school year at it’s for a great cause. I hope this continues to happen in the future once I've finished my time at Emmbrook.' 'The Sixth Form fundraising week always supports and raises awareness for really deserving charities and gives the school a chance to get involved with the community'

'The Sixth Form fundraising week is a great opportunity for the entire Sixth Form to get involved in helping people who are less fortunate. It also provides the Sixth Form the chance to get involved with the lower school' 'The week is full of fun and interactive activities such as the lip sync battle and ultimate Sixth Former' Each day had a different show where different Sixth Formers volunteered to complete a variety of tasks and challenges; Monday The first event of the week was the 'lip sync battle’. Sixth Formers had to compete against one another to show off who had the best showbiz potential. Each act was judged by the cheers and boos of the crowd before finishing off with the whole school singing and dancing to YMCA. Tuesday The next day brought the 'ultimate Sixth Former'. Pairs of Sixth Formers were put through a variety of challenges from popping balloons and drinking pints of milk to hunting down specified criteria in the audience such as to find a year 7 pupil and a size 7 shoe. If a pair failed to proceed to the next round they would receive a punishment of a pie or an egg to their face. Wednesday A heated contest saw a quiz showdown in 'teachers v pupils'. Five teachers faced five pupils nominated from the crowd between the years of seven to eleven. The quiz comprised a range of topics and tasks which saw the pupils come out on top. Thursday The penultimate show was the 'food eating' contest. Sixth Formers brave enough to volunteer went head to head with one another and were put through their paces. Rounds consisted of crackers, cold baked beans and marmalade. Friday The grand finale saw the 'Mr. Johnson and Mr. McSweeney Extravaganza'. The duo hosted the final day which saw the pair share their fun and wacky videos in front of the school. Friday was also the non-school uniform day where each student donated £1 to wear casual clothes for the day. The week was summed up well by a member of staff stating 'it has been very entertaining, innovative and imaginative. Raising money for a good charity highlights the strong community the school has'.

Y10 get creative Year 10 English students have recently been practising their creative writing skills – a key component of GCSE English Language. Ms. Flett’s students were given the challenge of writing horror stories, which had to include sophisticated vocabulary as well as techniques such as metaphors, sibilance and varied sentence structures. All of the students worked really hard on their stories and took a great deal of pride in their writing. Attached is an example by Neo McGill. Ms. Flett chose Neo’s work as she was ‘particularly impressed with his rich description and his highly effective use of a cliff-hanger ending. Neo’s choice of presentation also works well with the horror genre’. Neo said that he wanted to make his story look ‘professional’ and he has. Great job Neo! Ms. Flett Curriculum Leader – English

The ReThe ReThe ReThe Return of Itturn of Itturn of Itturn of It It was a cold and frosty night and the clock struck twelve. There was no one

around as I turned down an old road where it was a trashed, wild, wasteland. I

was cold and alone and I could remember what I was wearing that night. I was

wearing an old ripped jumper and a pair of ripped blue denim jeans. On my feet I

had a pair of old, torn and wrecked trainers. I could hear the strike of the clock

in the distance and behind me footsteps were getting louder, louder and louder…

On the edge of the road was a spotty multi-coloured bow tie and next to that was a

clown’s bright red nose. I phoned my friend harry and told him to meet me at the

end of the road where I had found the weird and strange items. I ran to him in a

hurry and told him what I had found. we turned around to go find the items but by

the time we got to them they had disappeared. Where have they gone?

“You’re speaking a load of nonsense” said harry. I told harry I was not lying and I

did see a clown’s bow tie and nose. We went on a search for the clown. But for all

we knew we were not searching for the clown, the clown was searching for us!

We were walking when we heard a loud banging coming from the distance and a

fast paced sound of circus music. It was getting louder by the second and out of

nowhere a clown jumped out with a large shiny, sharp object. He lifted the object

to Harry’s neck and began to slice it. His neck began to gush with bright blood. I

began to escape. I could still hear the screaming and the giggles of the clown.

I quickly rushed to a nearby phone box and clenched hold of the phone so hard it

almost broke. whilst hurrying to dial the number I broke my index finger on my

right hand.

Suddenly the police picked up and asked what my emergency was but then the line

cut off and the phone stopped working and there was a dead silence. Nearby

street lights Started flickering, everything came to a standstill and became

silent.

I was alone with IT…
