Anthony Anderson’s ebullient reaction to being recognized for his role in Black-ish as he and Lauren Graham read this year's Emmy
nominations was one of the highlights of Thursday morning's live announcement.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his response to the news, the actor said he couldn't help himself.
“I wanted to be nominated,” he said. “I think I should have been nominated. But you know, you never know. There’s no guarantee. And no,
there was no conversation about if you’re nominated, not nominated, keep going, push through [when you’re reading the nominations]. As you
can see, I was excited. I had to scream, I had to let my excitement be known.”
Later, Anderson screamed the nomination for co-star Tracee Ellis Ross and jumped in front of Television Academy CEO Bruce Rosenblum to
read Black-ish's best comedy series nomination.
According to Graham, who laughed with Anderson and effortlessly went along with his ad-libbing, there was no shortage of enthusiasm in
rehearsals, either. “In rehearsal we read the nominees from last year, and Anthony was just as excited to read his name from last year,” she
says. “But I’m sure it felt even better to get to do it again, here, and with his co-star and the show itself.”
Not lost on Anderson is the recognition he and his series received during a tipping point of racial violence going on in the country, the likes of
which has been a hot-button topic for the ABC comedy series. Toeing the line between sensitivity and storytelling can sometimes prove
difficult, but for Anderson, it’s a point of pride on the show. “What I’m very proud of is the authenticity and truthfulness in which we tell the
stories that we do on Black-ish, he said. “From there you can find humor. And if you’re staying true to the character, the jokes present
themselves and that’s how we do it. We have a great writing staff, headed by Kenya Barris and Jonathan Groff, who’s our showrunner. It’s a
testament to the writers that are in our room.”
The 68th annual Emmys will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 18, on ABC.
