Business Practice Improvement (BPI) Scholars Program ApplicationSponsorship Statement

Class Starting March 2019

Candidate’s Name _________________________

Introduction and Eligibility

The BPI Scholars Program is an eight-month professional development program for high-performing Emory employees and is intended to benefit both the employee and their operating unit. It provides participants with instruction in project management, business analytics, and university management issues, while allowing them to apply this knowledge and new skill set through hands-on work with a practice improvement opportunity in their business units.

To be eligible for BPI Scholars, a candidate must, in addition to submitting their own application materials:

be a full-time Emory employee, with at least two years of service preferred; demonstrate exemplary performance in their professional experience; be regarded as a “high potential” employee for future advancement; and be sponsored for the program by their supervisor, with signoff from their Department

Administrator (DA) or Chief Business Officer (CBO).

Note that if selected, there is a $100 per Scholar fee to enroll in the program, payable by the participant’s department.

Scholars Project

A central component of the program is work on a practice improvement opportunity in the Scholar’s own business unit that they have identified. This work will be called their Scholars Project and for the duration of the program, participants will receive guidance and assistance with it from BPI. At the end of their program year, Scholars will present their process, findings, recommendations, and results to Emory faculty and staff members. You will also receive a written evaluation of the Scholars Project.

BPI Scholars Sponsorship Statement 2019

The candidate must discuss their proposed Scholars Project with you, their supervisor and sponsor, before proposing it in their application to ensure that you agree with its potential merit to your unit. For these projects, applicants have been advised:

To select practice improvement opportunities:o for which measurable progress can likely be achieved within your program year;o that is actionable by your unit, within its existing budget resources;o that is meaningful for your unit and Emory University; ando that is broad enough in scope to provide a significant impact.

Preference is given to unique, novel, and/or distinctive projects.

Sponsorship Commitment

Program participants are expected to have the management skills and temperament to take on the program’s demands while continuing to fulfill their existing job responsibilities. Your support, however, will be important to their success. We ask you to consider the following:

Candidate’s TimeThe program is estimated to require 4 to 6 hours of a Scholar’s time per week, including attendance at program classes and lectures. While these instructional events will occur mostly in the late afternoon hours (3:30 – 5:30 pm), which should limit interference with the workday, it is important that their units understand these time requirements. Additionally, there will be four special half-day sessions throughout the eight-month program, and work time will be required to support the practice improvement project.

CooperationIt is important that each participant’s leadership and peers support their Scholars Project work, which is intended to benefit his/her home unit. Your assistance with promoting this support will help BPI Scholars contribute to your unit’s continued success.

Sponsor Attendance at Final PresentationAs noted above, at the end of the program year, each Scholar will present the findings and results of their Scholars Project. Each Scholar’s sponsor will be expected to attend his/her Scholar’s presentation expected to occur on Tuesday, October 29th.
