“All art requires courage” (Anne Tucker)

This courage is required of both the creator of the art and the viewer of the work. The courage required to create and to engage with art can be used as momentum for moving forward in addressing the issues found within art.

ETHICS @ the MOVIES

a fresh new approach to ethical discussion.

The First Tuesday of Each Month we will gather to WATCH a thought provoking film, DISCUSS the themes/ethical issues which emerge from the film, CONNECT with local community organizations

actively involved in addressing these issues and/or with writers, directors, actors, subjects of the film.

The Center for Ethics has welcomed Dan Keplinger, Regina Kelly, and Judith Helfand

Dan Keplinger was the subject and writer of the 2000 Oscar winning documentary King Gimp. Susan Hadary and Bill Whiteford produced both of these documentaries. Video Press, University of Maryland distributes it to schools and professional training programs. KING GIMP was featured on HBO. In addition to the OSCAR, it has also won the Peabody Award and was nominated for a national Emmy.

American Violet is based on the life of Regina Kelly, a victim of Texas police drug enforcement tactics. It is a 2009 drama directed by Tim Disney and starring Nicole Beharie. One day, while Dee (Nicole Beharie) is working a shift at the local diner, the powerful local district attorney (Michael O'Keefe) leads a drug bust, sweeping Dee’s housing project. Police drag Dee from work in handcuffs, dumping her in the women’s county prison. Indicted based on the uncorroborated word of a single and dubious police informant facing his own drug charges, Dee soon discovers she has been charged as a drug dealer. In 1963, filmmaker Judith Helfand’s mother was prescribed the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES), meant to prevent miscarriage and ensure a healthy baby. But technology is rarely a benign midwife. In 1990, at age twenty-five, Helfand was diagnosed with DES-related cervical cancer. She went home to her family to heal from a radical hysterectomy. There she picked up her camera. Her video diary, A Healthy Baby Girl, was shot over five years and goes beyond loss to document mother-daughter love, family renewal, survival, political awakening, and community activism.

The Emory University Center for Ethics Provides Space for Rotating Art Exhibits

17 Degrees Ain’t Nothing, focuses on the lives of 5 local individuals who are experiencing the hardship of living without a permanent place to call home. This exhibit accompanies a documentary film by the Center’s own Carlton Mackey and local Atlanta Artist Dane Jefferson. 17 DEGREES AIN'T NOTHING brings to the forefront issues surrounding homelessness in Atlanta. It places the story of 5 local individuals in the context of a global conversation about the economy, the recession, and the real life impact of it. It is a glimpse into their lives and a peering into our own.http://www.17degreesaintnothing.com

Mothers of a Nation is about a group of Ugandan women living with HIV and their fight for survival through sustainable farming methods. These photographs are in conjunction with a short film West shot on 16MM. Narrated by Florence, a 55 year old woman that has been living with the virus for over 13 years, the film weaves together 16MM footage of the women living and working as their stories of betrayal and suffering unfold, ultimately leading to voices of strength and hope. http://www.ansleywest.com/fine-art/documentary1/mothers-of-a-nation-jinja-uganda/

Women in War Zones is comprised of riveting images by Melanie Blanding who graduated from Western Kentucky University in May 2006. Shortly before graduation, Melanie was awarded the Alexia Foundation grant for a photographic story proposal, which led to her work in the Democratic Republic of Congo during 2006 with Scott Blanding and Brad LaBriola. Melanie hopes that her photographs will be used to have a positive impact on the lives of those she documents. http://www.womeninwarzones.org/

The Emory Center for Ethics Presents World Premiere of Testaments of the Heart

Testaments of the Heart is an unprecedented marriage of images and music that evokes the humanity and creativity of those who were interned during World War II. The unique program will begin with a two-month exhibit of photographs from Ann Weiss’ moving book THE LAST ALBUM: Eyes from the Ashes of Auschwitz-Birkenau, which captures the images confiscated from the victims of Auschwitz concentration camp. The photo exhibit will open in multiple venues around Emory campus, including the Center for Ethics, the Emory Visual Arts Gallery, the School of Medicine, the Rollins School of Public Health, and Cannon Chapel. Ann Weiss will visit Emory over the course of the exhibit to tell the stories behind these provocative photos, including talks to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The highlight of Testaments of the Heart will be a moving and provocative theatrical concert on September 28th at the Schwartz Center. The program will feature music written in the internment and concentration camps of World War II, performed live by Atlanta-based musicians accompanied by narration of the stories behind the music. Professor Francesco Lotoro, who will attend this premiere, has been heroically saving and cataloguing this music, gathering it from all over the world and recording it for posterity. In addition, Ann Weiss’ photos will be integrated into the program. Testaments of the Heart will be the first time the images and music of the victims of the Nazi regime has ever been presented together. In fact, most of the music being presented on the evening of September 28th has never before been performed in front of a live audience. Please join us for this unique and moving event. http://www.testamentsoftheheart.org

The Ethics Arts Café

The Ethics Art Café is an Ethics Arts Symposium held each fall. In partnership with the Wonderroot Community Arts (Voted Best Advocate for the Arts and Best Public Art Project by Creative Loafing), this event brings to Emory University’s campus local artists whose work is focused on addressing social issues and whose motivation for creating art is its potential to bring about social change. This year’s Ethics Art Café will be November 18, 2010 from 7-9pm. For more information email [email protected]

The Free Speech Arts Café

The Ethics Art Café precedes the Free Speech Art Café so that it may inspire young student artists to focus their work on pressing ethical issues. Its function is to help student artists begin to view art as a vehicle for social change. A component of the Free Speech Art Café is the “Annual Student Visual Art Competition,” Students have the opportunity to present their work to the Emory community which includes photography, film, sculpture, paintings, sketches, and digital illustrations. In addition to this visual art display and competition, the evening is infused with student performances of spoken word, dance, and music.
