Even experienced players will beneit rom reading these two pages, because there are some dierences between Emp ire : Total War - Gol d

Edi tio n and earlier Total War games. These are highlighted here.

NAvAl COMbATThe biggest new eature or ex per ienced Total War players is naval combat.I you rely on the techniques and tactics you learned as a general, you willbe deeated as an admiral. Even something as apparently simple as shipmovement can be diicult at irst, and you may be unaware that almost allships ire out o their lanks (sides), not rom the bow (ront)! It is worth reading the section on naval warare (p.31) and playing throughthe tutorial to help you ully understand the dierences between warareon land and at sea. The controls or units are subtly dierent, and a littletime learning them will be amply rewarded by the despairing cries odeeated enemies.

REGiONS, buildiNGS & CONSTRuCTiONOn the Empire : Total War - Gol d Edi tio n campaign map, buildings existboth inside and outside cities. I youre an experienced Total War player, construction within your regions capital will be amiliar to you. However, construction within a smaller town is slightly dierent. Here, you can only con struct a build ing once the town has developed to a pointwhe re a cons truction sit e becomes availa ble. This wil l happen automati ca ll yonce a regions population grows to a certain point. Some buildings can only be build in certain locations, or example, you can

only build ports and dockyards on the coast. It is possible to have morethan one building o the same type in a single province.

T EC hNO lO Gi ESIn addition to constructing buildings and training troops, you can nowcarry out research into new technologies and ideas. Research takes placeat universities and other educational buildings. You can speed up researchby assigning gentlemen (a type o agent, p.16) to your own educationalbuildings, and sending them into enemy buildings to steal technology thatyou r ene my has researc hed. Most o the technologi es you resea rch wil l doone o the ollowing: Grantsomeofyourunitsanewabilityorimproveanexistingability. Makenewbuildingsavailableforconstructionornew, specialistunits

GOvERN MEN TS & REvOluTi ON SYour nation can ado pt thr ee di e ren t kinds o government: abs olu temonarchy, constitutional monarchy or republic. Societies will unctiondierently under each type. The type o government can be changedthrough revolutions, which take the orm o rebellions within your nationscapital region.Fortunately, you are able to choose whether to back the rebels or the stateonce it becomes clear who is winning. This means that even i there is amajor revolution, you can still hold on to power. For more details, pleasereer to Public Order and Revolutions (p.23).Nation leaders no longer appear on the map as generals. Instead, theking or president o a nation remains in its capital city and his abilities(which are dierent or each leader) aect the administration o your

entire empire. Also, his ministers each have an eect on speciic areas ogovernment, such as the army, navy, trade or internal security. For moredetails, please reer to Running your Empire (p.21).

T RA i Ni NG uN i T SAdmirals and gener als can now rec ru it uni ts and shi ps rom the ir nat ionsregions, even i they are at sea, or marching through enemy lands. Unitsrecruited in this way automatically make their way to the leet or army thatrequested them. This does not stop units being recruited in the way theywere in Rome: Total War - Gold Edition .

AG EN T S & SP i ESYou no longer rec ruit age nts dir ectly. Ins tead, certain build ings, suc has education and entertainment buildings, will automatically generateparticular types o agents rom time to time. The quality o the buildingdetermines the requency and the quality o the agents that it generates.

lAN d b ATTlESIn Rome: Total War - Gold Edition, battles were ought at close quarters. In Empire : Total War - Gol d Edi tion, most units have ranged weapons,so closing with the enemy is a good way to get shot! However, rangedweapons take time to rel oad , s o uni ts armed wit h the m are vul ner able orshort windows o time (the same is true or your units, o course!). Andremember, artillery can now be ver y, very dangerous. Its worth playing through the tutorial to amiliarize yoursel with thecapabilities o dierent units, even i you consider yoursel an expert TotalWar gen eral .And now, good Si r, mak e sur e your tr ico rne and wig are i rmly in place, buckle on your sword, polish your pistols, and take up the challenge o
