    A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certainvisual images, including ashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games.Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosedcondition that can cause these photosensitive epileptic seizures while watchingvideo games.

    E mpire: Total War is an epic game o strategy, combining turn-basedempire building on a vast campaign map and massive 3D real-timebattles on land and sea.In Empire: Total War you will be charged with the ortunes o a nation, with the ultimate aim o establishing them as the most dominant poweron the 18th century globe. You will build military orces that are both eared and admired. Expand your borders through conquest or diplomatic cunning. Conquer overseascolonies to establish vast and pro itable trade networks, whilst at home, your research into new technologies and ideas will advance your military

    power and steer your people towards enlightenment. You must be wary however: new ideas can be just as power ul as any army this is, a ter all, an age o revolution! You decide the strategy behind the development and expansion o yourempire, whilst taking command on the battle ield and high seas, to vanquish those who dare to stand in your way. The road to domination is yours to explore.

    RequiRementsPlease ensure that your computer meets the minimum requirements as setout on the packaging. Empire: Total War requires either Windows XP orVista. An internet connection is required or the initial installation.For the optimal experience please ensure that you run the game on

    Even i youre an experienced Total War gamer, and you dont generally read manuals, you might want to have a quick look at these two pages. Thekey di erences between Empire: Total War and earlier Total War gamesare highlighted here.

    naval Combat The biggest new eature here or long-time TOTAL WAR players is navalcombat. I you use the techniques and tactics you have learned as a general, you will be de eated as an admiral! Even something as apparently simpleas ship movement can seem odd and remember, ships ire out o their lanks, not in the direction they are moving.It is worth reading the sections on naval war are and playing through acouple o naval battles to understand the di erences between land andsea war are. The controls or units are subtly di erent, and a little timespent learning them will be amply repaid (i only in the despairing crieso de eated enemies).

    Regions, buildings &ConstRuCtion

    Buildings exist both inside and outside cities on the campaign map.Construction in your regions capital will be amiliar to you. You canonly construct a building in one o the smaller towns however, when thetown develops and a construction site becomes available. This happensautomatically as a regions population grows (hint: arms aid populationgrowth). It is possible to have more than one building o the same type ina single province. Finally, some types o town determine what can be builtthere: you can only build ports and dockyards on the coast, or example.

    teCHnologiesIn addition to constructing buildings and training troops, you can now carry out research into new technologies and ideas. Research happensat universities and similar educational buildings, and you can assigngentlemen (a type o agent) to aid research e orts. Each technology youresearch will usually do one o the ollowing: Grant some of your units a new ability or improve an existing ability. Make new buildings available for construction or new, specialist u

    available or recruitment. Grant some of your buildings enhanced effects. Earn your nation prestige, which can lead to victory in the camp

    game.

    goveRnments & Revolu tions There are three di erent government types that your nation can adopt:absolute monarchies, constitutional monarchies, and republics. Each hasits own quirks and advantages in the way society unctions under them. You can change governments through revolutions, which are essentially rebellions in your nations capital region. You do get to choose whetherto back the rebels or the state, though, so even i something has gonedisastrously wrong you can still salvage the situation.Nation leaders no longer appear on the map as generals. Instead, theking or president remains in your capital city, and his abilities a ect theadministration o your entire empire. His ministers have e ects on speci icareas o government responsibility, such as the army, the navy, trade, orinternal security.

    Once again, though, read the section on Running Your Empire or moredetails.

    tRaining uni tsAdmirals and generals can now recruit units and ships by mail order

    rom their nations regions. Units recruited in this ashion automatically make their way to the army or leet that requested them. This doesnt stoprecruitment in the usual ashion in regions.

    agents & sPiesAgents are no longer deliberately recruited by you. Instead, certainbuildings will automatically generate agents o particular types rom timeto time. The quality o the building governs the requency and quality o the agents that are generated.

    land bat tlesIn previous Total War games battles are ought at close quarters. In Empire: Total War you need to remember that most units have missile weapons:Simply closing with the enemy is a good way to get shot! However, it alsotakes time or many units to reload, so there are windows o vulnerability (the same is true o your units, o course). And remember, artillery can now be very, very dangerous.

    Its worth playing through a couple o battles to amiliarise yoursel withthe capabilities o di erent troop types, even i you consider yoursel anexpert Total War general.And now, good Sir, make sure your tricorne and wig are irmly in place,buckle on your sword, polish your pistols, and take up the challenge o Empire: Total War!

    Embark on a story-driven campaign portraying the rise of Geor Washington and the oundation o the United States.

    staRting a gRand CamPaign The Grand Campaign setup screen allows you to choose a nation using

    lags and scroll buttons at the top.

    Each nation has its own di iculty, based on actors such as their startingposition and military power. This is displayed in the di iculty panel, where you can also tweak the campaign and battle di iculty using thesliders provided.

    tHe tuRn systemCampaign games in Empire: Total War are turn-based meaning thateach nation takes turns in moving their pieces, managing their regions and

    ighting battles. The Grand Campaign game progresses by a year every two turns.campaign begins in 1700 and you have until the end o 1799 to achieve your victory conditions. Once that date passes, you have the option tocontinue play without the victory conditions.

    CHaRaCteRsCharacters in Empire: Total War have two basic classes military characters and agents.

    a These are non-military characters that can be used to carry out a wide range o missions and tasks.m r Ch r c r Brigadiers, Generals, Captains and Admiralsthat lead your armies and leets. The strength o an army or leet isdisplayed via the number o pips in the column to the le t o its lag.

    u sInG a GentsAgents can be dispatched to spy on enemy positions, carry out sabotage,assassinate or duel with rivals, carry out research at universities and tospread their aith amongst non-believers. To utilise an agents active abilities, select them andright-click on apotential target character, army or settlement. To use an agent s passive abilities, such as a Missionarys ability to converta regions religion, simply move the character into the target region.

    G ettInG a GentsAgents cannot be recruited like military units, they are automatically generated by the presence o certain buildings in your regions. Thesebuildings also in luence how many agents you can have at one time.g , sch r , m r , iand br h are generated

    youR militaRy FoRCes Your armies and leets are your nations primary weapon on land and sea.

    As a unit ights and survives battles they gain xp r c

    that improves their ability to deal with uture combatsituations. Unit experience is displayed as chevrons on thetop right corner o the unit card. Units also gain specialtraits that improve their use ulness.

    moving youR FoRCes There are a number o options available to you when mobilising military

    orces, including merging and splitting. Movement on the map is alsoin luenced by Z f C r.

    Z f C r Each army, leet and or t on the campaign map hasa Zone o Control surrounding them. Any rival military orce thatenters this zone open themselves up to immediate attack. Care ulplacement o military orces and orts can there ore be used to setambushes and create strategic chokepoints.

    m r F rc Move an army or leet onto another to merge them.I there are less than 20 units involved this will be automatic.Otherwise, you will be presented with a panel to manually adjustthe process.

    sp F rc To split the orces o a selected army or leet, irstselect the units via the unit cards in theR P . You can useSHIFT and CTRL on your keyboard to select more than one unit.Once selected, use right-click to set the destination or this new

    orce on the campaign map.m r u Units o the same type that have su ered casualties,

    can be merged to create a single, stronger unit. Use theR P to select and drag one unit onto another to merge them.Experience will be averaged out amongst merged units.

    conditions and the orces involved. At the bottom o the panel you havethe ollowing options available:

    Click this button to auto-resolve the battle. The computer will then automatically ight the battle and present you withthe result.

    Click the withdraw button to retreat your orces rom thebattle.

    at taCKing witH ReinFoRCements Your orces, or those o your allies, can join the battle as a rein orcementsi they are adjacent on the campaign map.I you take control o the battle these armies will be available to rein orce your ranks as the battle progresses. In auto-resolved battles their strength will be taken into account.

    seiZing set t lements & buildingsExpanding your empire will require many victories in the ield. To truly dominate your rival nations however, you will need to seize enemy regionsby attacking towns and capital cities.

    t owns , p orts & r esourCe BuIlDInGsArmies can be used to attack settlements on the campaign map. Orderingan attack on a garrisoned town, port or resource building will trigger aland battle. I the target is unde ended the attacking orce will simply march in and seize it.

    rom invading armies. An attack on an un orti ied city will trigger a landbattle between the two orces. An attack on a orti ied city or ort willtrigger a siege battle.Sieges require di erent tactics and o er additional options in thebd p P .

    Maintain the siege or this turn in the hope o lushing outthe de ender.

    Demand that the de ender immediately surrenders without aight.

    using Fleets While pure naval power in battle will help you wrestle control o the seas, your leets can also be used or a variety o tasks that will be crucial to your nations success.

    t ransportInG u nItsShips can be loaded with agents and armies or transport to overseascolonies. Simply move an army or an agent onto a leet docked at ashoreline to pipe them aboard.Use the ar or a tab in the R P to select the units anduse right-clickto disembark at their destination.

    r aIDInG t raDe r outesPlacing leets onto enemy trade routes (those marked in red), will allow you to steal some trade income generated by that route or that turn.

    B loCkaDInG p ortsUse right-click to place a leet in a rival nations port and you will cut o all the trade moving through it.

    m ovInG f leets a Cross t heatres You can move leets quickly between the three main theatres and the tradetheatres using tr Z . These are marked by shaded areas on the seas o the campaign map. Whena leet enters a zone you are presented with the tr d P.Use this to select the theatre you wish to travel to.

    e xploItInG t raDe t heatres tr th r are sea regions with rich trading prospects. Placingmerchant leets in these regions will give a signi icant boost in tradeincome. Use military leets to protect your merchants rom enemies.

    building aRmies & FleetsMilitary expansion is essential to maintaining imperial ambitions. New armies can be recruited at region capitals, while leets can be built at townslots containing ports.
