Employability skills
• are the foundation skills that people need to be successful in education, careers and professional life. These skills are transferable, meaning that they can be used in all types of careers. You must continue to develop these skills over your lifetime.
There are three categories of employability skills:
• Fundamental• Personal Management• Teamwork
• 1. Fundamental Skills• These skills are the base for further
development:• Communicate- read and understand
information in written, visual and oral form.• Manage information- locate and organize
information using proper technology• Using numbers- decide what needs to be
calculated and recording data• Problem solving- identifying causes of
problems and finding creative solutions
• 2. Personal Management Skills• These skills refer to your attitudes and
behaviours. • Being positive• Being responsible• Being adaptable• Being a continuous learner• Being a safe worker
• 3. Teamwork Skills• These skills involve being a productive worker:• Able to work with others effectively• Participate in projects and tasks- planning,
assigning jobs, monitoring success
• Task 1: Prepare a chart showing your employability skills. When you write your resume, these are the skills that you’ll refer to as a way to “sell” yourself.
• Task 2: Jobs and Skills Search• Locate out three job postings on the internet that
you would be interested in applying for – in the near future (next six to twelve months). Attach each to this sheet.
• Describe what the job entails using your own words.• Thinking about “employability skills”, identify three
skills that are necessary for the job and why they are necessary. Be specific.
