11.15am Women, work and the menopause: Breaking the silence

Professor Gavin Jack | Department of Management, Faculty of Business & Economics, Monash University

Women over 45 years of age form a significant proportion of the workforce in many industries, notably healthcare

and social assistance, retail, and education and training. By the age of 51 years, the majority will have transitioned

through menopause, with many continuing to experience symptoms, including hot flushes and sleep disturbance

post-menopause. Yet there is a silence on women’s experience of menopause in the workplace, and little attention

given to how organisations can best support women’s health and well-being in this regard during transition.

Does the menopause actually affect women’s engagement at work, their job satisfaction, commitment to the

organisation and intention to leave? Do all women experience problem symptoms of the menopause that affect

their work? Are there positive stories associated with careers and lives in organisations after menopause? Which

aspects of the organisational environment and corporate culture make women’s experiences better or worse?

This presentation will answer these questions based on a research project conducted last year with women working

in three universities in Australia. In addition to an overview of the key findings, the presentation will focus on

drawing out specific implications for professionals with responsibility for Employee Assistance Programs, and

broader considerations for HRM, OH&S and equality and diversity practice.

The presentation will set out an agenda for strategies to support and promote the participation of midlife female

employees in the workplace, situating menopause as part of a broader health and well-being concern of

importance to Australian employers.

EAPAA 24th National Conference • 13 - 14 August 2015 • Diversity, Inclusion and Discrimination: EAPs and Social Responsibility

Friday 14 August 2015 continued

1.15pm The Age of Reason

Chris Waters | (D.Psych), Principal Consultant, Catalyst ODP

There has been a lot of talk about older workers needing to keep working. After all, how is the nation going to

support all of those baby boomers if older workers leave the work force? This is the topic of government policy, it

gets mentioned in the recent Trans-generational report put out earlier this year, makes the headlines at HR

conferences, blogs, podcasts and newspapers. But is it as simple as saying we need to work longer? What about

age discrimination in the workforce? Are some industries better suited to keeping older workers on the pay-role?

Do older workers want to keep working? Do businesses want to employ them if they do? How are older workers

affected by these issues and how do they cope with them? These issues will be explored in this presentation and

the relevance to EAPs will be highlighted using a series of case studies.

2.15pm #GenY: The rise of the Gen Y generation and what this means for EAPs

Oliver Brecht | Psychologist Consultant, Insight Elite Performance Psychology

Susie Rydderch | Consultant, Insight Elite Performance Psychology

With Gen Ys beginning to make their presence felt in the professional world, the issues and stressors they perceive

to be the most important and most pressing will begin to influence the way EAPs are utilised and influence what

issues most commonly present to an EAP service. Today Gen Y's biggest stressors and fears are ones they can’t

touch and possibly even ones we can’t see. Gen Y is the next wave to hit the shores of the EAP, so EAP providers

need to be prepared.

This topic will look at Gen Y through the lens of client, practitioner and also wider society to look at what the Gen Y

population is experiencing in modern society what they perceive to be the biggest issues for them as individuals

and for mental health. The topic will then expand out to look at whether or not people are more stressed in

modern society compared to previous times, or are the stressors just changing shape and they have become

better at voicing their complaints.

3.15pm A F T E R N O O N T E A

3.45pm FORUM | How can EAPs effectively influence their client companies and what lessons are on offer?

Chair | Julie Crawley | Director, EAPworks (NZ)
