Changing Expectations
Young people with developmental disabilities will learn about employment options and planning during their school years.
Changing Expectations
A new expectation that community employment, i.e, competitive employment that takes place in an integrated setting, is the preferred outcome for working-age adults with developmental disabilities.

Susie’s Story
- 30 year old woman who had some previous community work experience
- Worked in a sheltered workshop for 9 years
- Got customized employment rolling silverware to reflect her strengths
- Able to work above minimum
wage for 12-15 hours a week
- Enjoys it because she feels needed and a part of the work environment
Jill’s Story
- Worked in a facility based or enclave setting since exiting school
- Was able to volunteer with an animal rescue facility
- Was hired as a dog walker
- Works one hour a week for
above minimum wage
- Working makes her happy and she feels like she is needed by the dogs
- 25 year old man
- Thought to never be able to maintain employment
- Referred to OOD counselor
- Through Discovery found that he had a great interest in cars
- Was able to find employment detailing taxes and is highly interest in the job
