Page 6: Employment Pages 299

I’ve spent 19 years of my life in an around recruitment and during that time I’ve worked with everyone from inmates in a Category B men’s prison to senior partners in City Law Firms. I also deliver Recruitment & Selection training courses for managers to help them in their quest to find the right person for the job. Currently I’m doing a lot of outplacement work which means I’m working with those at threat of redundancy and I’m also running workshops for the long term unemployed.

I don’t believe the perfect CV exists, simply because what is perfect for you may, for reasons of style, language etc., not be perfect for the recruiting manager reading it. However there are some key things you can do to help your CV stand out above the rest.

First and foremost remember that for the recruiting manager this is a “screening out” rather than a “screening in” process. They will have 1 post to fill and 20+ CVs so they are looking for reasons NOT to interview you; let’s not give them any.

1. Inconsistent font. Make sure that the font is consistent throughout in terms of size and style. DON’T have a Times New Roman header and then a mix of Arial and Calibri throughout. Make all your headings a consistent size and, if you choose to number your pages, make sure the page numbers are in the same font as the rest of the document. Never smaller than font size 11 and nothing fancy or flamboyant.

2. Length. 2 - 3 pages maximum. I once had someone claim they couldn’t possibly get theirs down to anything less than 7 pages. Fine, just realise that the busy recruiting manager will only read the first 1 or 2. Think of your CV as you sales flyer; it doesn’t need to say everything about you, just enough to make someone want to interview you and find out more.

3. Sell your skills. Remember there is a world of difference between your job description and the skills you bring to the role. Far too many CVs I see simply regurgitate what someone does on a daily basis - I’m not recruiting your old job I’m recruiting YOU. Sell me your skills; each time you write a statement ask yourself “so what?” What worth does that statement add to your CV and why would it make me want to interview you?

4. Personal Statements. Having trained many hundreds of managers over the years I know that personal statements are the Marmite of CVs. Some managers love them and others hate them. They are always worth adding but keep them short and punchy. They should tell me what you believe are the most important skills you have to offer and should be no more than 3-4 lines long.

5. Qualifications and training. Where these go on your CV comes down to 2 key questions: How recent & how relevant? If you have a relevant professional qualification then that needs to go at the front, if not then put it at the end. And don’t give me a full page list of every single course you’ve ever attended. Pick out the most relevant and a line such as “attended a range of in-house courses focused on personal and professional development” will do just fine. (Remember, your CV is prime advertising space, use it wisely.)

6. Use bullet points. Don’t make the recruiter work to find out what you can do, it needs to leap out of the page at them. Use bullet points throughout your CV to make it easy for them to read. Make sure there’s enough white space on the document to make it look inviting to read rather than a chore that needs to be ploughed through.

7. There is no “I” or “my” in CVs these days. Some people choose to use “Jane has excellent administration skills” whereas others prefer “Has excellent communication skills”. Whichever you’re most comfortable with. Just make sure you’re consistent throughout.

8. Send the right CV for the right job. This goes beyond simply re-ordering the bullet points to match those in the role described. Tinker with the language too so that it is seamless. For example in my profession some people talk about annual appraisals, others annual reviews, or performance appraisals etc., but they are all the same thing. When I submit my CV for a role I ensure that it matches the job description both in content and style of language.

9. Use and appropriate and helpful filename. Pretty much all jobs these days start with an electronic CV so make sure the filename contains your name and date. For example: FredBloggsCVMay13. Once you’re happy with the layout it’s also worth saving it as a PDF file to ensure that all the formatting remains in place.

10. Spelling, punctuation and grammar. As a professional writer I know how tough this can be. You read and re-read a document and then, 3 weeks later when several hundred folks have already seen it, you re-read it again and immediately spot the glaring typo. Ask someone to proof your CV for you; don’t be embarrassed about what they might think about it, you need a second opinion.

11. Too much information. You do not need to include your date of birth, nationality (unless it’s directly relevant to the role), marital status, NI number, how many dependents you have, your gender or sexual preferences. A lot of people these days also remove most of their postal address to protect against possible identity theft. A county and postcode will suffice so long as you have an email address and contact phone number.

12. An appropriate email address. A perfectly fine CV can be completely undone by a “[email protected]” email address. It takes seconds to create a new account so make sure yours is appropriate and professional.
