India has the largest population of young people in the world. India – youth &

adolescents constitute 45% of nearly 1200 million population. This young generation

India constitutes a precious resource characterized by growth & development and is

often a phase of vulnerability often influenced by several intrinsic and extrinsic factors

that affect their emotions and personality.

10-12 % of < 18 yrs suffer from disorders in behavior, learning and development.

ICMR - Mental & Behavioural Disorders in children – 12.8%

WHO – Serious Emotional Disturbances in young people – 15%

The early 21st century children bring a set of experiences, physical &

psychological challenges that may predispose them to dysfunctional states. It is

not unusual for a counseling center to come across children with anxiety, mood

disturbances, impulse control, personality issues, substance abuse related disorders

and other severe emotional disturbances.

Therefore, Adolescents & Youth Enrichment, Personality Development, Stress

Management, Motivational Enhancement, Family Life Education, Happiness &

Wellbeing Awareness Campaigns and Seminars are proposed as integral part of

Psychosocial Rehabilitation of Child Beggars. Intervention through structured

programs such as visits to flyovers and Mental Health Workshops on Personality

Enrichment shall be the central points for programming, dissemination and

counseling service.

Brief Glimpses and Efforts Of

Psychosocial Rehabilitation of Child Beggars

Children who become victim of the vicious cycle of role reversal are frequently

exposed to abuse because they have no social status and no adults to protect

them. Street children identify being physically threatened and intimidated by

adults as the one factor that contributes most to the misery of living on the

streets. While the majority of street children in India, have been found to use

maladaptive coping mechanisms to deal with the stress of their lives such as

drinking alcohol, using drugs, anti social and criminal behaviour, the cause for

this behaviour is frustration concerning living on the street or conflicts in their

family which caused them to leave home.

They indulge in habits such as substance misuse, and anti social and

criminal behaviour. Therefore, being Empathetic and Counseling for their

Mental Health Well-being is a crucial step towards their holistic development.

Time: 10:30am-12:00pm

At the Moolchand Flyover, the Clinical

children where rapport building was the prime

focus.

An Orientation Workshop took place with 8

children (age group: 7-15 year old) about their

lifestyle and wellbeing at the Mobile Mental

Health Education & Child Rights Van. Out of

them, one child shared her distress about the

family and will be taken into for counseling at

the Institute of Child Mental Health and

DAY-III (Munirka Flyover)

Date: 15 March 2017 Time: 11:30am-1:30pm

As per the schedule of Counseling

sessions for child beggars, Clinical

Psychologist Ms Aprajita Dixit along

with team of Counselors had an

Orientation Workshop for about 55

children (age group: 7 -17 years) at the

Mental Health Education and Child

Rights Van for their Psychosocial

Wellbeing.

Observations: During the orientation,

15 children were observed taking

Tobacco and were subsequently

trained about “Substance Use and its Effects”.

Amongst them, there were few students who are keen for regular school education.

They were trained to motivate their fellow peers and siblings for the same.

A Continuous Campaign for Awareness & Sensitization at the Traffic Signals took the

pace with great enthusiasm. Hygiene is the basic need and necessity which is missing

alarmingly in their lives. A Health Check-Up Campaign is the need of an hour which

has not happened for past 3 months and we look forward for the same as soon as

possible. Along with Heath check up, regular counseling for de-addiction will be our

next target.

Apart from the field visits, a 15 year old girl from Moolchand flyover was brought for

counseling at the Moolchand Medcity on 8 March 2017. She discussed about her

stressors and the Psychologist provided a Comprehensive Solution Focused Approach to

her in the presence of Educator Ms. Preeti.
