QATAR ACADEMY DOHA MISSION STATEMENT

Staff Lead the Way

As I travel around our school, I notice just how often our staff are engaged in conversation with students. Not just in classroom settings, but in the common areas and hallways. The smiles on their faces and supportive language suggests to me that QAD is a safe and supportive environment for us all.

Every day we have teachers taking on additional responsibilities outside of their teaching requirements. That is another sign that the culture of our school supports getting the best out of our students. Teaching is not a job, it is a calling.

What parents often do not see is the significant time commitment that teachers make in the preparation of lessons and the evaluation of student work. This takes place at home, often late into the evening. Add to that the coaching, sponsorship, and chaperone duties that our teachers offer. Many have families of their own, who they must take time away from to prepare themselves for the students they will see the next day. I hope that our appreciation for our teachers goes beyond a special day and extends throughout the year.

It reminds me of an experience I had with my own daughter when I was a young teacher. I had come home very late at the end of a weekend tournament where I had been coaching a school team. It was towards the end of a very long season which involved many nights and weekends away from our two children. As I entered the house, tired and hungry, my 7-year-old daughter jumped into my lap and asked me where I was and what I had been doing. I explained that I was coaching my basketball team and her innocent response was, “boy dad, you sure spend a lot of time with other people’s kids.” I was crushed, but it reminded me of the importance of maintaining a work/life balance. Please keep this in mind as you think of your own children and how much they benefit from the dedicated staff that work at QAD.

Dear parents and community members,

Our students continue to pursue great opportunities and demonstrate the leadership qualities we work hard to instill in them. This coming weekend many of our students will be participating in the sixth annual Qatar Leadership Conference held at the Qatar National Convention Center. A delegation of 103 student administrators, press corps, presenters and participants will represent Qatar Academy Doha in the conference this year. QAD continues to lead the way with regards to QF Schools through our strong working relationship with THIMUN Qatar and in providing leadership and growth opportunities for our students. These experiences not only shape our students into positive, productive and engaged members of society, but they also help our students find their voice in areas of interest and passion, which they will continue to build on for years to come. There are a number of staff who deserve recognition for their commitment to the development of our students and whose efforts benefit Qatar Academy and the QLC. It is not only about giving for the faculty who are participating; QLC also provides excellent professional development and networking opportunities for and between schools from around the world. Thank you to Suzanne Brown, Trudi Christie, GranVille Caldwell, Raka Singhal, Arfaan Hanif, Sebastian Kasiuk, Nonie Ebeling, and of course Lynette Winnard for the huge job of organizing all the Admin, press corps, presenters and delegates. We look forward to the following 13 student and 2 faculty presentations to be made during the course of this weekend’s conference. Student Presenters: Lana Abu Shanab and Reem Al Janahi – Using Advocacy and Global Collaboration to Further the SDGs Fai Al Naimi and Noura Al Dosari – Finding Your Balance Dana Al Ali and JunTae Park – Using SDGs to Take Action in your Community Abdulla Odeh and Khalifa Elmagarmid – Make Body Language your Superpower Acacia Nikiel, Kristen Boehlke and Sanskriti Tandon – 13 Reasons Why History is Repeating Itself Tamim Al Kuwari – Wearing the Armband On and Off the Field Ahmed Al Naimi – Aspiring Leaders: Mining Your Inner Leadership Potential Faculty Presenters: Brett Scott – Introverts: Excelling in the Classroom and Beyond Keisha Rogers – The Increasing Importance of the College Essay

Please read through the important reminders listed below:

Afternoon Pickup: This is a request pertaining to the safety of our students. We kindly ask that parents and drivers only pick up students from the front of the Senior School. Students should not be picked up from the recreation center. Also, if drivers need to park during the pickup time, please park in the Awsaj parking lot, not the recreation center parking lot. Thank you for your support.

3-Way Conferences: Please make plans to join us for an opportunity to learn more about your student’s academic progress this year. Following the Quarter 1 Reports, 3 Way Conferences (Student/Parent/Teacher) will take place from:

3:00 - 5:00pm on Monday 6th November 2:00 - 5:00pm on Tuesday 7th November

While some parents will receive specific invites to the conferences, as indicated by an R on the Parent Attendance column of the Quarter 1 Reports, we encourage all parents to attend with your child/children. Students are required to attend conferences with parents so that a more informative conference can occur. Please mark these dates on your calendar– we look forward to seeing you!

No Homework Week for Grades 6 - 10: We recognize that the long stretch from Eid break in September to our winter break in December requires a break of some sort. We have placed into our calendar during the week of October 29 - November 2 a no homework week for grades 6 - 10. While activities and assessments may be held during classtime, students will not be assigned nor expected to complete daily homework.

QAD Website: Our website http://www.qataracademy.edu.qa has undergone a make-over during the past month. The information available to existing community members as well as prospective families has been updated. There are two valuable resources that are important for parents to know and understand, both of which provide

explanations and overviews of the programmes on offer here at QAD:

QAD Middle Years Programme Handbook QAD Diploma Programme Handbook

Evacuation Drill: At some point in the coming week we will also be practicing a whole school evacuation drill. Please speak with your son or daughter about the importance of following instructions in emergency situations. Thanks for your support! Have a great weekend. Congratulations to Mr. Corey Andreasen, QAD Faculty Member, who has been recognized for his contributions to the 5th edition of Intro STATS by De Veaux, Velleman and Bock. This mark the fifth high school or college level mathematics textbook that Mr. Andreasen has had the opportunity to contribute to, albeit his first as a member of Qatar Academy Doha. In the acknowledgements sections of the soon to be released Intro STATS, the authors thank those people who have provided substantial help and support. Mr. Andreasen was specifically thanked for his work on updating the exercises, answers and data sets. Well Done Mr. Andreasen.

Another very nice surprise when I looked up today! Sara El Husseini came to see me. A QAD graduate, she is in her third year of the full medical programme at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. She is looking to work with us to encourage healthy eating amongst our student population. She will graduate as a doctor in 2019 and we are immensely proud of her heard work and success. To the future Dr. El Husseini!

**UPCOMING UNIVERSITY DEADLINES**

Please be mindful of looming deadlines. The QAD deadline supersedes the university deadline so that we can check students’ information and make sure

everything is good to go.

We aim to have all applications with a January 1 deadline completed before we depart for Winter Break in December.

We appreciate your support in helping with this endeavor!

Attention Juniors and Seniors-

SAT spaces are filling up very fast. If you will be applying to a university that requires an ACT or SAT score, be sure to register for one or both as soon as possible. See Ms. Rogers if you need help with this.

Beginning Wednesday, October 25, we will have application help sessions during lunch in B2-12. These sessions will run daily through December, unless there is a university visit on that day. All students with fall semester deadlines should plan to attend a session that suits their schedule. Students with spring semester deadlines are more than welcome to attend. Upcoming Visits-

A representative from SCAD will be on campus this Sunday, October 22 at 12:30pm in B2-12. While best known for their programs in the Arts, SCAD also offers a wide range of other disciplines including Architectural History, Equestrian Studies, Television Production and more! Join us to receive updates on admissions from their campuses in the USA and Hong Kong.

Dickinson University will visit QA on Monday, October 23 at 12:30 in B2-12. Dickinson is one of the oldest institutions in the USA. They offer 43 major areas of study, the most popular major being international business & management. Interested students should sign up in Naviance to speak with the representative about admissions updates for the year. We are proud to host IE University on Sunday, October 29 at 2pm in B2-12. IE University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with campuses in Madrid and Segovia. 65% of IE’s student body comes from outside of Spain, making IE an excellent choice for the international minded student. Join us in B2-12 for admissions information and program updates!

Qatar Academy Orchestra

The Qatar Academy Orchestra has begun rehearsals. Nearly 60 students chose to participate in this optional activity at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. All instrument families of the orchestra are represented, including strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Students at all levels have demonstrated exceptional IB Learner Attributes together learning, mentoring and playing together. Our advanced string quartet has already performed a song by Johann Sebastian Bach for the Middle School! We look forward to a great year of orchestra.

Qatar National Music Competition Eight Senior School students competed in the first ever Qatar National Music Competition (QNMC) during the week of October 16-18. Please offer them your support and encouragement! Their extraordinary level of work and focus for this event has been stunning: Felipe Tatis (Solo Violin), Senan Al Naimi, Jassim Al Sulaiti, Amal Al Thani, Tamader Al Subaeey, Faiyez Sadeq, Alex Murphy (QAD Ensemble), Maytham Hajji and Juntae Park (Lazy Panda).

Grade 11 students, Maytham Hajji and Juntae Park won 3rd place nationwide in the small ensemble competition. They and their parents have been invited to a gala concert Thursday night, where they will receive their medals and certificates. Congratulations! This first-ever event was completely overwhelming, with so many young musicians and so much excitement. Organizers wrote that all of them have been brilliant! http://qnmc.org/about/patron/

NESAC Band and Choir Band and Choir will begin soon. Interested students should watch for further information from the Arts and Activities departments! Best regards, Benjamin Tomczak, M.S. Senior School Music

If interested/or you have a recommendation please contact Steve Walker [email protected] Athletic & Activities News It has been another big volleyball week and it was great to get our swim team for a meet at ASD on Tuesday. ASD Invitational Swim Meet On Tuesday 17th October the mighty Falcons swim squad, led by captains Tia Scot and Abdulla Abu Ghazala, took to ASD for the first swim meet of the season. It was always going to be a tough meet, facing ASD A-squad and H2O swim club but the team held their own. At the time of going to press the results were still not in, however special mentions should be made; The U16 girls, consisting of Iyana Abdul Aziz (Captain) Prkriti Tandon, Tanise Yang, Hannah Barnstead and Anisa Phelps are a relatively new squad, however it didn't show in the pool! The drive and determination was incredible-a special note to Hannah and Anisa competing in their first competition! The boys U16 shad was led by captain Alex Murphy, and consisted of twins Omar and Youssef Hassan, Junior Abu Ghazala (Omar), Granville Caldwell, Noufal Metidji and the number 3 Al Khulaifi (Youssef). These boys certainly kept their coaches on their toes, but they were incredibly strong in the pool, despite being 3 years younger than most their opponents!

The U19 teams were led by Tia Scott and Abdulla Aby Ghazala. With more experience on their side they took to the races like ducks to water. All swimmers were determined, focused (mostly) and showed the true Falcons spirit. Well done to Tia, Shaiyn Barnstead, Aesha Hussein, Abdulla, Peter Tembo, and Max Andreson (who swam in his first meet for QAD and was AWESOME!). However, if we had to pick a MIP (Most Improved Player) for this meet, it would be Granville. Words cannot express how proud we are of you Granville, you have come so far and it is only the beginning-you truly deserved your standing ovation. Finally, a few thank you's from me (Coach Spracklan) To Nadia for your continued support and encouragement of the team; you'll be in the pool next meet! To Zahra for giving up your evening to take team photos-truly appreciated! To the parents for your loud cheers and pool side encouragement :-) And finally to Becs and Waylon, you two were incredible-THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Athlete of the Week – Granville Caldwell III, mighty effort in the pool and received a standing ovation!! Team of the Week – QA Men’s Staff Volleyball team, beat ASD men 18-25, 25-18, 26-24 for an historic underdog victory at ASD on Tuesday. Now known as the Dragon Slayers!
