Dear parents and community members, We have had another week of academic focus. Our students are now fully engaged in the classroom and probably experiencing an increase in homework. During the coming days and weeks we will see an increase in assessments as well. With that said, we wish to encourage students to seek additional support from their classroom teachers by making appointments to see them during break, lunch or after school to address their questions and concerns. Please do not wait until it is too late; get help early and often!

PTA Parent Session: On Monday 18th September, 2017, the QAD PTA will host a parent session in the QAD Visitor’s Center. The session will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. We hope you can join this session and learn more about the role of the PTA in our school.

MAP Test Update: Please know that students will start taking the MAP test on Sunday, September 17. This test is very important because it allows us to understand the specific academic needs of our students. With this information, we can improve our ability to support students in literacy and mathematics. The test window for MAP is Sunday, September 17 through Thursday, September 28.

Middle School Student Planners: All students in grades 6-8 received planners this week. The planners are a great tool for students to keep track of their daily assignments, and they also serve as a form of communication between parents and the classroom teacher. Please ask to see your child’s planner and take time to discuss homework and class assignments. The planners afford you as a parent a great opportunity to be involved with your child’s daily classwork.

Dropping off Items: If you are dropping off items at school during the day for your student, please know that the drop off times are during break, lunch, and class change. Items must be brought to the security counter and picked up by the student. Items may not be left by parents, drivers, or nannies for the student to pick up at a later time. Instead, the student must pick up the item directly from the person dropping it off.

On Wednesday 30th August 2017, QAD held their inaugural ceremony for our highest achieving students in all subject areas. We also acknowledged students who exemplify the aspects of the Learner Profile. Which is at the heart of everything we do here at QAD. Awards were also bestowed on those who are great roles models for their peers and who reach out to help others in our community. The prize-winners and their parents received individual invitations to attend this and to celebrate the outstanding success of our students. We truly have an amazing student body and we are so proud of them! QAD Senior School administrators

We are looking forward to next year!

Max Chute graduated from Qatar Academy Doha in 2016 and is now in his second year of the Chemical

Engineering program at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. As a Third Culture Kid, returning to Canada for university was an exciting change for Max. He was able to participate in winter sports for the first time – ice skating, downhill skiing. Max also continued to play recreational basketball, volleyball, and swimming which he enjoyed in Doha. One of the reasons that Max chose the University of Waterloo was because of the Co-Operative program. The Co-Op program means that Max alternates semesters between attending classes on campus and working at a job placement to develop his knowledge and skills in real work environment situations. This Co-Op program will allow him to earn an Engineering degree plus it will give him 24 months of paid work experience, helping him cover tuition and residence fees. Max’s first work placement was in the Quality Assurance department at a plastic colour concentrate company in Brampton, Ontario. His second

work experience, which started last week, is with Natural Resources Canada in a metallurgical fuels lab

in Ottawa. The IB Diploma Programme at QAD prepared Max well for the academic rigour at university and in his job placements. His HL courses covered many of the topics he learned about during his first year at university, giving him more time and energy to adjust to being away from family. The University of Waterloo has a comprehensive program for international students and families. The staff at the Grebel

Residence where Max lives (and eats amazing home-cooked Mennonite meals) was key to his social support and adapting to his new setting.

Dear Seniors: This is a friendly reminder about your upcoming deadlines. See Ms. Rogers in the Counseling office with any questions you may have:

Attention Juniors: The PSAT is upon us! Expect a visit from the counselor during your Junior advisory time next week. You will receive your PSAT guidebook, and we will begin bubbling in the answer sheets in an effort to save time on test day. The PSAT is the official practice test for the SAT. It is used to measure your aptitude in the areas of reading, writing, comprehension and math. For students with citizenship in the USA, a high score on the PSAT could potentially mean National Merit Scholarship qualification, a prestigious honor for junior students. More details to come from Ms. Rogers! Attention Juniors and Seniors: Admissions representatives from all of the Education City universities will be on campus Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 2p-3p, right after school, to discuss admissions procedures for the 2018 cycle. If you intend to apply to any EC uni, please plan to attend this mini fair and meet the people who will help make a decision on your application for admission. The fair will be held in room B2-12. Come with all questions! The University of California at Davis will be on campus to discuss changes to the UC application as a whole on Thursday, October 12 at 12:30pm. In addition to updates about the Davis campus, the representative will speak about the new freshman insights prompts on the UC application.
