Newsletter Update !You should notice a few changes in your Department Newsletter this month, because you asked, the Editors worked to ensure we answered. First, near the center you will notice a calendar of Department activities at a glance. This is our first attempt to make the numerous activities more accessible and easier to find in a monthly calendar format. There is much work to be accomplished and I am looking for assistance to either design a better process or populate this on the internet, maybe with Google calendar. Second, we are attempting to list Department activities and courses out for approximately six month. Many variables are in play as we work with our partners to obtain this information for your planning needs. Please feel free to send requests for Department activities to be listed to our Editors. Finally, we are aligning and formatting both BLS and ALS CE schedules and processes similarly. We have populated the BLS schedule with the classes our EMT students attend after their certification exams so all members may attend if they desire (pre-registration required on a space available basis). The March and April ALS classes are listed by name and the FY14 ALS schedule will be released in the May Newsletter in the similar format with the BLS schedule included within. Thanks for the suggestions. Please let us know how we are doing and keep your suggestions coming in.

CE Credit and EMS IDs

What do the two items in this articles title have in common? The OEMS has been providing barcoded VDH certification cards for the past couple of years to all providers upon initial certification and recertification. You may have noted that the Department of EMS has been barcoding the reverse of VBEMS IDs for the past year. Beginning in FY14, the Fire Department will also barcode their IDs with this information. This barcode is your VDH EMS certification number and level. This is a unique identifier for all providers. This barcode provides the opportunity to be greener, reduce bubbling errors on the current CE cards and reduce the time from CE class completion to CE credits posting in your OEMS Portal. Therefore, beginning in the first quarter of FY14, all CE programs offered through the Department of EMS will move to only scanned CEs and elimination of the bubble card. At such time, you will have to have a valid and current Virginia Beach EMS or Fire ID properly barcoded or your barcoded VDH state certification to receive CE credit from the Department for programs competed. Please stop by EMS Admin or Training to obtain your new ID (yes, they will check to see if your OSHA, CPR and EMS certification is current.)

Volunteer ALS Sponsorship and Scholarship

I have been approached recently by several members about advancing their education and certification. Not only am I encouraged by individuals wishing to improve themselves, but I am encouraged that they wish to do it with service to our community. Chief and Deputy actively encourage and support an educated membership in our learning organization. The application period for summer sponsorship and scholarship for ALS education programs leading to EMT Enhanced, Intermediate and ultimately, if you chose, Paramedic certification begins March 1st and ends March 30th. The requirements and process are included within this newsletter and the application is available on the VBEMS.com website under ALS Sponsorship @ TCC.

Still unsure whether you should apply or have questions? Please come meet the training staff and Division Chief Bianco on Tuesday, March 19th 1830 hours at the EMS Training Center for a brief overview and a question and answer session.

%For 2013, VBEMS will continue using online recertification for National Registry Intermediate and Paramedic only. Online recertification allows providers to have control over their recertification and allows for much faster recertification processing. Documents that will help you with your online recertification are located on the Training Center website linked through www.vabeachems.com. Please remember that NR limits distributive education (i.e. 24/7, EMS online, TrainVA, etc) to 10 hours cat 1 and 12 hours cat 2. Additional restrictions NR imposes on CEs can be found at NREMT.org. You will need to complete your online re-registration by March 10, 2013 to allow adequate time for your application to be reviewed and validated by NREMT, the training officer and OMD. This year, Instruction Supervisor Lani de Forest will be the training officer managing National Registry Intermediate and Paramedic recertification. Lani can be reached at [email protected] or 757.385.2971. Captain Raj Islam will also be assisting with National Registry Recertification. He can be reached at [email protected] or 757.385.5025.

Virginia Beach One of Five U.S. Cities Chosen for CPR Grants From Heart Association and Cities of Service

Goal: Train 5,000 Residents in Hands-Only CPR Virginia Beach is one of five cities nationwide chosen to receive 1,000 Hands-Only CPR training kits that will help turn residents into lifesavers. The winners were announced today by the American Heart Association and Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of more than 150 mayors who are committed to using service to address pressing local needs. Other cities chosen are Austin, Texas; Buffalo, N.Y.; Milwaukee, Wis., and Savannah, Ga. In Virginia Beach, the kits will be used to train 1,000 residents. The Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services will coordinate distribution of the kits for training residents at local events, volunteer rescue squads, community centers, churches, businesses and schools. Those residents, in turn, will each pledge to train at least four additional friends or relatives. The goal is ultimately to train 5,000 people how to perform life-saving Hands-Only CPR

ief Bruce W. Edwards of the Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services. In the late 1960s, out-of-hospital CPR and in the early 1970s, pre-hospital advanced cardiac care were started in the commonwealth by the volunteer rescue squads of Virginia Beach. We look forward to the Cities of Service Hands-Only CPR grant providing the opportunity to teach CPR to more and more people. We hope this will increase our successful record of The training kit will support implementation of the Cities of Service Volunteer CPR Blueprint, a high-impact service strategy in which cities partner with local healthcare professionals and emergency responders to train volunteers to use the lifesaving Hands-Only CPR technique. The blueprint calls for volunteers who are trained by professionals to teach CPR to at least five other residents, vastly

cies. Each grant is valued at $20,000. -more-

Hidden Hazards Inside of a Vehicle!

DATE: April 4, 2013 TIME: 1 pm ET / 10 am PT COST: FREE

Speaker: Mike Smith is a firefighter/EMT for the Wixom (Mich.) Fire Department near Detroit. He is also an 18-year veteran of the automotive industry in Detroit and is a senior product designer for Lear Corporation. He has designed and engineered structural steel components, interior safety systems and complete seat structures. Smith operates the extrication-focused website Boron Extrication (http://boronextrication.com), where he blends his automotive and fire service experience. He has taught extrication courses in Michigan, Ohio and California, emphasizing current and emerging vehicle technologies.

In the past 10 years, the automotive industry has made many changes to the way vehicles are made and these changes are, in turn, changing the way first responders approach motor vehicle accidents. Air bags are found throughout the vehicle, pretensioners are used in second- and third-row seats, and the seats are starting to resemble those of a jet fighter, with multiple technological enhancements packed into a small package. Automakers are also increasingly using advanced steels like boron to add strength to their body structure, to meet the latest government crash requirements and to reduce weight to improve fuel economy.

Although these developments create a safer vehicle for drivers and passengers, they also create new challenges for rescuers. Fortunately, hydraulic tool makers have stepped up to the plate to produce tools that can cut and spread their way through the strongest body structure on the road today. But rescuers must continue to hone their techniques to use these new tools, while also maintaining awareness of vehicle hazards from bumper to bumper.

This webcast will provide an in-depth look at inner-circle extrication operations

Common battery locations, disconnection options, airbag precautions, advanced steel locations, and techniques to work around and manage these hazards !

How to identify and mitigate high-voltage batteries and cables ! Techniques for managing all the vehicle hazards during an extensive

extrication !
