another state should contact the agency responsible for credentialing EMS personnel in that state as soon as possible to

obtain information regarding requirements for reciprocity.

B. Meeting reciprocity requirements is the responsibility of the student.

V. BROOKHAVEN COLLEGE EMS PROGRAM COMPLETION AND ATTENDANCE POLICIES:

A. Completion Time-Limit Rules:

1. DSHS Rule 25 TAC 157.33 addresses time limits for completion of EMS courses and certifications.

2. Candidates must complete all requirements for certification no later than one year after their initial course completion

date.

3. A candidate who does not complete all requirements for certification within one year of the candidate’s initial course

completion date must complete another initial course to obtain the certification.

4. The DSHS rule can be found at: http://www.state.tx.us/hcqs/ems/ruladopt.htm

B. BHC-EMS program has set specific completion guidelines:

1. Students must complete all associated clinical experiences, hospital and MICU, within the designated time for their

class.

For Paramedics it is 45 days from the last day in the classroom.

For EMT-B it is 20 days from the last day in the classroom.

2. Tardiness is defined as arriving at the designated class-meeting location after 15 minutes from the designated

start/meet time. Each tardiness-event will count as 4 hrs of absence, to be charged towards the maximum allowed

absence time for the program.

It should be noted and understood that tardiness is not allowed under any circumstance at a clinical or MICU

internship site. A tardiness-event will be considered an unexcused absence and may jeopardize the student’s

ability to successfully complete the EMS program. All required clinical rotations and MICU internships must

be satisfactorily completed and documented to remain in the program.

Excused absences, tardiness:

The only allowed excuses are for serious medical conditions, motor vehicle accidents, and death of a

family member.

Students will have to provide documentation for said occurrences to be afforded the excused absence.

There will be no make-up, re-test, etc. due to un-excused absences/tardiness.

Excused absences/tardiness from a clinical/internship site will be added on to the student’s current

clinical/internship schedule.

Unexcused absences/tardiness from/at a clinical/internship site will cause the student to repeat that entire

clinical course. In these circumstances the student will be dropped from the course by the Clinical

Coordinator who will then assign a “WF.”

3. Religious holiday exemption guidelines are found at:

http://www.tasb.org/policy/pol/private/057501/pol.cfm?DisplayPage=FBC(LEGAL).html&QueryText=RELIGIOUS

C. BHC and DSHS requirements for completion:

Successfully complete a drug-screen test at student’s expense.

Successfully pass a criminal background report at student’s expense.

or harm the relationship between the clinical site and Brookhaven College.

C. Change in Health Status

A student who has any significant change in his/her health that may affect or be affected by his/her EMS

Education Program coursework will be required to obtain a physician’s release. The release must specify the

conditions, if any, under which the student is able to return to the classroom and clinical activities.

Examples of significant changes in health status include pregnancy, infectious diseases, and significant physical

injury or illness. A physician restriction for return to normal activities may cause a delay in completion of the

program. These conditions will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the program director.

Students who must be absent from clinical experience due to a physical or mental illness, surgery,or pregnancy

will be required to obtain a written physician release before returning to the clinical setting.

D. Pregnancy

As EMS poses a significant risk of exposure to diseases and physical/emotional strain, female students are

required to submit a pregnancy status form.

Most emergency scenes are chaotic until emergency responders apply the necessary mitigation procedures. For

this reason, Brookhaven College maintains controls regarding pregnant students in the EMS Program.

The student must decide whether to accept the risks associated with EMS internships. If the pregnant student

chooses to continue in the program during her pregnancy, every effort will be made to protect her unborn child.

However, clinical experiences of the type contained in the curriculum must be completed prior to graduation.

If a pregnant student chooses to withdraw during the term of her pregnancy, she will be readmitted upon

completion of her pregnancy leave pending space availability. The length of pregnancy leave is to be determined

by the student’ s physician. If the student does not re-enter the program upon completion of her pregnancy leave,

she must reapply under the standard readmission procedure. If the pregnant student decides to remain in the EMS

Program, she accepts full responsibility regarding the outcome.

Students anticipating surgery or the delivery of a baby, who will require a longer recuperation period

before a physician release can be obtained, are urged to wait to enroll in a future program.

2. There is only (1) one final exam retest opportunity for each EMSP course. This is an EMS Program policy. The Capstone

Final Examination for each program is specifically exempt from this policy.

3. Individual faculty may elect to afford make-up opportunities for skills verifications, quizzes, and exams at their discretion

and in concurrence with the excused absence guidelines. It will be specified in that particular course syllabus.

4. All EMS course grades will be computed/weighed from:

a. Quizzes: An average of all quizzes.

b. Skills: On-going skills verifications pertinent to the current topic during class.

These skill verifications are not part of the capstone final examination procedure(s).

These skills verifications may include National Registry level skills

c. Other Major Exams:

Any other designated major exam as specified in that particular class’ syllabus.

A designated major exam minimum grade is specific to that particular course syllabi.

Failure of a major exam can be designated as a failure of the course in that particular course syllabi.

d. The EMSP Course Final Exam:

The Final Exam minimum grade is 70%.

Failure of this exam will result in a failure of the respective course.

A final exam for a particular class may include psychomotor skills verifications.

5. The Course Content Comprehensive Final Exam:

Comprises a course content component and

Verification of skills proficiency

For EMT-B: It is administered in EMSP 1501.

For EMT-P: It is administered in EMSP 2143

1. Successful completion of the Course Content Comprehensive Final Examination process for EMSP 1501 is

necessary to attend MICU internship (EMSP 1160) at the EMT-Basic level.

2. Successful completion of the Course Content Comprehensive Final Examination process for EMSP 2143 is

necessary to attend MICU internship (EMSP 2463) at the paramedic level.

6. It will be necessary for each student to successfully pass the skills proficiency verifications for their particular level. If not

successful on initial verification, there will be a chance for ONE (1) retest. Students must practice that specific skill prior

to retesting or sign a waiver refusing retraining.

7. Unannounced quizzes can be expected as students are responsible for material that has been covered on previous classes. In

some instances, a quiz may be given based on reading assignments as found on the syllabus provided.

8. Any student with an average below an 70.00% will not be allowed to begin clinical. Once the overall average is above

70.00%, the student may then attend clinical.

9. Grading Scale:

A letter grade of A for a score range of 90.00% to 100%

A letter grade of B for a score range of 80.00% to 89.99%

A letter grade of C for a score range of 70.00% to 79.99%

A letter grade of D for a score range of 60.00% to 69.99%

A letter grade of F will be awarded for a score less than 60.00%
