If you truly want to get better at something, you need to step out of your comfort zone and push the boundaries of what you can handle. I'm sure you've met people who seem to be able to handle anything and ev-erything. Naturally, they are no better than anyone else. The difference is that they test their boundaries and push them to the edge.

This summer, we really got to see people push themselves to the absolute limits in the sports world. This is particularly true in the Paralympics, where participants impressed by achieving results

where many only see limitations. What can we learn from them? Setting impossible goals is just as pointless as setting goals too low. Most of us need to take small steps towards progress and success. We need to set goals that are just beyond reach, but are still close enough that we can envision our-selves achieving them. The power of positive thinking is an important aspect of this. Studies show that it is just as effective to visualize – to see yourself reaching your goal – as it is to actually train to reach your goal. When it comes to a team, each individual will have a different starting point. It is therefore impor-tant to start with goals that unify

the team and move it forward, i.e. goals that some perceive as simple but others in the group are unsure of how to achieve. The advantage of working in a team is that mem-bers can help each other to see the goal as something that can be accomplished. To ensure that the team does not lose steam, it is important to set the goals at short intervals. There should preferably be a new goal each week that each team member sees and under-stands how to accomplish. Along the way, everyone will expand their comfort zones and view the world with new eyes. Good luck! Linköping, a sunny day in late summerPeter BarklandCEO, Aretics

STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!

Once again, we had the honor of participating in Underhåll 2012, a maintenance trade fair held in Gothenburg this past spring. This gave us the opportunity to meet industry colleagues, inter-esting customers and both ex-isting and new contacts.

Our presence at the trade fair was very rewarding and gave us the op-portunity to answer both simple and more complex questions from our visi-tors, ranging from those who had just started looking at technical solutions for reliability to those who were well on their way and needed help in their progress.

Another highlight of the trade fair was when two of our project managers, To-mas Eriksson and Staffan Bergström, won the Maintenance Championship League arranged by UTEK, the Swedish association for maintenance technol-ogy.

“This is our second time arranging the competition. It was such a success last time that we decided to hold it again

this year,” says Jan Frånlund, chairman of UTEK. Tomas and Staffan, who both have vast expertise thanks to previ-ous assignments and jobs, thought it would be fun to put their skills to the test against stiff competition from companies such as Coor Service, Askalon, Univar, Bis and Perstorp Oxo.

“Both Staffan and I have a lot of knowl-edge about everything related to op-erational reliability, which is our area of expertise,” says Tomas Eriksson.

“At my roots, I'm an electrician. I've connected and built amplifiers and over the years have learned a lot about air circuits, pressure, pressure relief and wiring diagrams,” says Staffan.

“The intention was to use Mainte-nance Championship League as a way to market Validmaint, the system we developed for surveying and certify-ing maintenance personnel,” says Jan Frånlund. Validmaint enables mainte-nance personnel to become a Certi-fied European Maintenance Specialist through our company.

In the competition at the trade fair, dif-ferent teams played against each other and the winner with the highest percentage of correct answers moved on. The final came down to Aretics' team against last year's winners and it was Staffan and Tomas who walked away with this year's Maintenance Championship League trophy.

“It was a lot of fun to put our knowledge to the test,” says Tomas about the competition.

Others who went home winners dur-ing the trade fair were the four visi-tors who answered questions posted at our stand. Congratulations to the winners. We hope they get a lot of pleasure and use from their prize – a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Your company, with dedicated employees at all levels. What would that achieve? Dr. Richard Berglund studied the architec-ture of dedication in depth in a dissertation that was presented in 2010 and also serves as the basis for the book “Det värde-fulla engagemanget – en guide för Lean och andra strategier för utveckling” [The value of dedication – a guide to Lean and other develop-ment strategies].

“You often read the phase ‘em-ployees are our most impor-tant resource’ in various company presentations, but not all compa-nies take the matter seriously and truly understand what a valuable resource their employees are,” says Richard Berglund.

“It rarely takes more than 10 min-utes at a company to get a picture of its culture, interpersonal relation-ships, attitudes between coworkers at various levels and respect for

each other.” “Employee attitudes towards each other and towards their work is something you can feel in the air,” continues Richard.

The book “Det värdefulla engage-manget” takes a holistic approach to dedication and what aspects must be highlighted and cultivated to create and maintain the condi-tions in which dedication flourishes.

The model on the next page shows the ten aspects covered in the book and how they work together.

“When undergoing a change pro-cess of this type, it is important to really emphasize and highlight the things that work well now. You need to utilize everything that helps de-velopment move forward and is needed to be able to take the next step,” says Richard. “There are of-

ten many reasons behind a success that has been achieved. It is impor-tant to respect and learn from what got you to where you are today. I believe more in evolution than rev-olution. Change is a gradual process that needs time to mature.”

In the book, dedication is defined as the “the driving force behind acting for the common good”, which then

leads to a discussion on how to define the common good.

“To be able to create the right conditions and successfully build a dedicated organization, you must have the courage to step away from what feels safe,” says Rich-

ard. “At first, it is a change that is de-pendent on the individuals. It must seep into the walls and become a natural part of things to be lasting. It is then that the organization cre-ates the leaders they want.”

A dedicated organization needs to work with the big picture. It is bet-ter to invest energy in improving the whole than to implement selective measures in small areas.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF DEDICATION

The driving force behind acting for the common good

Richard holds both a Master's degree in engineering and a PhD. He has vast experience in management positions at different levels. For three decades, he has worked in research and performed assignments in production and work life at Swerea IVF. He also has ties to the Department of Sociology and Work Science at the University of Gothenburg.

Page 5: EN AC09-2012

The above model shows the differ-ent aspects that must be covered if one wants to reach the goal of a dedicated organization on all levels. The propeller spins in the right di-rection if you actively work with the concepts and terms all around the propeller.

“My advice is that if you want to get started, you need to start talking about it. You must approach the pro-cess with the attitude that change will be given the time it needs, you can't fix everything in one day and that it is not someone else's respon-sibility to resolve issues – the mem-bers of the organization must work

together to achieve change. The hard part then is not talking about what should be done, but actually doing it,” concludes Richard.

For more information on the book, Richard or Swerea, please visit www.swerea.se.

• Have a long-term perspective and trust in the process

• Don't request proof for every-thing

• Focus on learning• Look at the big picture• Create a lot of space for commu-

nication and dialog

• Give employees responsibility and tolerate mistakes along the way

• Avoid dual control. When imple-menting a new work method, re-move old routines and controls

• Strive for active participation from management – not just pas-sive support

• Ask for help. An organizational change must involve the entire organization. In doing so, the changes root themselves with the individual employees over time.

Moving from corrective mainte-nance to a greater percentage of preventive and condition-based maintenance is on the agenda at Beslag & Metall in Ekenässjön.

Beslag & Metall started the year well. CEO Marcus Björnsson ac-cepted the distinction “2012 Busi-nessman of the Year” from Vetlanda Municipality in April and the com-pany is investing to drive operations forward.

“The company has a tradition of long-term thinking,” says Svante Nors, Maintenance Manager at Beslag & Metall as he proudly shows off the addition of the new 3,500 square meter press hall.

“Our maintenance goals include working more proactively with pre-vention and increasing the percent-age of preventive maintenance to around 80%,” says Svante.

“Our maintenance efforts thus far have increased the understanding and participation of the workers at the machines,” he continues.

“A great deal of the communica-tion between production and main-tenance is via the maintenance system,” says Peter Thomsen, technician at Beslag & Metall. All employees submit their job reports in T7 in their respective areas. This creates a good history of completed measures and in the long run pro-vides good opportunities for moni-toring factors such as costs and rea-

sons for shutdowns in each machine group.”

“We hold thorough reviews at the start of new projects and analyze the design of new tools and ma-chines to reduce the number of po-tential problems,” says Peter.

With a 5S project started about a year ago, Beslag & Metall is striv-ing to create conditions where the percentage of preventive mainte-nance is greater than the percent-age of matters handled by the main-tenance organization. Right now, Production is working to implement the new way of thinking and doing things. In six months, it will be Main-tenance's turn.

“The fact that the operators under-stand why they need to care about the data related to the machines and tools they work with is a change from earlier thinking. By making our measures more visible, the opera-tors have become interested in find-ing out if and when the measures are remedied,” says Pier Cederborg, who is responsible for acquisition

and works in close collaboration with the Maintenance department.

“One of the factors we are focusing on is determining how long it takes from when a job is created to when it is completed. We call this internal efficiency and it is one of the key in-dicators we look at when it comes to our improvement work,” contin-ues Pier.

“Our next step is to work with con-dition-based maintenance. The goal is to minimize the amount of down-time and redistribute the percent-ages of corrective and preventive maintenance,” concludes Svante.

Beslag & Metall is a family company based in Småland that delivers sheet metal products, particularly to the automotive and furniture industries. The company has about 200 employees. Production methods include pressing in automatic and hydraulic presses, welding, assembly and surface treatment of sheet metal components. In addition to the surface treatment line at the company, Beslag & Metall owns the industrial paintshop Bogelack in Ulricehamn.

Aretics is working hard to further increase its availability. Today, many calls are first channeled to a telephone service before the customers receive a call back with answers and help for their questions and problems related to use of T7.

Madelen Kindstrand and Lars Johansson, who guide users through the problem to the solution, are working actively to make it easer to get in touch with us by autumn.

“We want to be able to take direct calls to a greater degree. We intend to achieve this through increased staffing,” says Madelen.

Aretics Customer Care Center is available weekdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. After 5:00 pm,

it will be possible to resolve some problems via an online guide.

To be able to help resolve problems together with T7 users, it is important for Madelen and Lars to know what version of the program is used.

“It also makes it easier if you let us know if any major changes were made to the problem. Knowing what updates have been made is also important when it comes time to help our customers,” says Lars.

Madelen and Lars also need to know when and how the problem arose.

“It is important that we work together to find the root cause of the problem. This helps us to prevent it from happening again,” says Madelen.

If a problem cannot be resolved by phone, Aretics Customer Support can connect to the user's computer and look at the user's problem via remote control.

They attack problems with the attitude that every problem can be fixed. Their aim is to live up to customer expectations and establish a high level of trust. This work can also be considered teamwork.

“Through their questions, the customers help us to continually improve the product and our own work,” says Lars.

Those who make a habit of follow-ing the good doctor's advice have probably created a number of great selections that are of great use in your organization. But, how do you create a bit of order to them so they are visible to the right user at the right spot? What do you do to make it easy to use? Aretics T7 has several tools to con-trolling how and where selections are shown. Selections are the pages in the Menu field on the left-hand side that you create with lists of interesting information. It is im-portant to separate different lists based on their intended usage. For example, there is a huge difference between a list of emergency mea-sures and lists used to search for spare parts.

Use a suitable menu group. There are several predefined menu groups in the system.

The intention is for you to place pages where they are best suited.

Job follow-ups and current jobs do not have to be in the same menu group because their usage is so dif-ferent. If you are not happy with your selections setup and want to move them around, simply open your selection (right-click and select Edit). From there, you can change the menu group.

Use folders to separate dif-ferent jobs from each other. Even if your list of urgent

error reports and your inspec-tion rounds may look exactly the same, they are never interesting at the same time. Use one folder named e.g. Urgent error reports to group the selections related to er-ror reports and another folder with preventive maintenance for these jobs. Folders are easy to create. Simply right-click in the menu field and select New folder.

The good doctor is in a great mood today. There's a lot to be happy about after a fabulous vacation with games, road trips and hula hoops. It's finally time to get back to work!

Sometimes, a list is only rel-evant for a specific computer. For example, you may have a

computer in a specific storeroom or at a conveyor. You can then cre-ate a selection of spare parts avail-able in that particular storeroom and have the list visible on that com-puter only. For all sections, you can decide who can view the selection and on which computer it should be visible. If there are several comput-ers, you specify them with a comma in-between. Bear in mind that if you create selections for comput-ers other than those you sit at, you will not be able to see the selection. However, by logging in with the spe-cial Admin account, you can view all selections available in the entire system, regardless of who they are to be visible to. Good luck in creating a structure that makes life a little easier for all users!
