Ideas competition for the creation of
“Vienna House of Music”
Introduction
Vienna, the capital of Austria, is considered by many people as the world capital of Classical
Music, and it certainly was from the sixteenth century until the nineteenth century. Composers
and music lovers from all over the world went through long journeys to reach this city and
work for the masters of Classical Music. They would see live performances of their favorite
composers and marvel at the excellent acoustic qualities of some of the many concert halls in
the city.
All this artistic movement is clearly reflected nowadays in the various monuments dedicated to
the most illustrious of that golden age. The architectural landscape that developed during this
prosperous period has been named by UNESCO as World Heritage.
However, during the twentieth and twenty-first century, cultural changes, new musical styles,
media and the easiness to travel around the world, have made the value of the Viennese arts
diminish. New music schools have been created in other continents (such as the Julliard
School in New York) and young composers have appeared (including 27 Chinese Lang Lang)
who have managed be at the top of contemporary classical music by fussing classical and
modern elements.
The historical city of Vienna really attracts the attention of people around the world. Tourists
travel to the Austrian capital to be amazed by the architectural works of the past, to visit
monuments honoring celebrities and hear famous compositions known worldwide.
However, Vienna offers a great variety of things besides from music. It is one of the great
European capitals, a modern and avant-garde city with 20% of its population coming from
other countries. It´s civism, cleanliness and order are an example to follow. No wonder Vienna
has been qualified as the city with better quality of life of the world.
Vienna is proud of its history, respecting and taking care of it. However it is going through a
difficult moment, trying to find a perfect balance between a glorious past and a promising
future. Vienna has to show the world what it is and what it wants to be without forgetting
what it was. It is a delicate and complex task in which the architecture really involved.
Proposal
From ArchMedium we propose the design of a new building, the Vienna House of Music
knowing the importance of Vienna’s past and future. It is a project destined to become an
important link between the city´s history and its present.
It is a new space located in a privileged place in the city, where new trends of contemporary
classical music can be shown to the world through the cultural agenda of the institution, which
will extend its boundaries on all four sides taking over its environment and making it
participate in multiple activities.
This project is destined to be primarily a common element to alter the perception that users
will have the in the park and its surroundings. Project must create a unique experience for the
senses, not only for those who visit, but also for those who enjoy a pleasant walk in the park.
The project should be the basis of an idea and of a neighborhood, as the young and visionary
composer Evan Taylor said in the film August Rush "Music is all around us. All You Have to do is
listen”.
The plot
In the nineteenth century Vienna suffered a major increase in its population. Consequently,
and combined with the new town-planning ideas, the city walls were demolished in 1857. This
allowed the historical city of Vienna, among other things, to grow towards the periphery.
On the grounds of the ruined city walls (500m wide), a major avenue was proposed, the
Ringstraße in which many public and private buildings were constructed. The nobility and the
bourgeoisie built numerous palaces and important equipment such as the Opera, the
University, the City Council, the Parliament, the Stock Exchange and the museums of art
history and natural history as well as cafes, parks, plazas, subway stations and monuments.
The project will be located at a key point of the city, both for its history and for the role it has
today. The plot is located within a park (Stadtpark) in the ring, with some proximity to the
historic center. It has the great difficulty of being a front view of a small canal, two major
avenues, and an open the park.
The Stadtpark, with 65,000 m², was created after the demolition of the city walls and was
established as the first public park in Vienna. The park was designed by the landscape painter
Josef Sellen, with the English garden style, and carried out by landscape designer Rudolf
Siebeck.
This park has a small pavilion at its southern end which is a metro station designed by Otto
Wagner. The building is perfectly inserted in the park, establishing a dialogue between the new
construction techniques and the architectural style known as "Viennese Secession." It is
important to emphasize that this park has the largest number of monuments and sculptures in
Vienna, most of which are musicians.
Program
The program should include both public service areas for the city and the park, and private
areas for teaching music.
In addition to the 3500m2, the building must create a relationship with the environment
through the creation of intermediate areas and outdoor terraces, porches, galleries, etc.
The program includes an indoor auditorium and an outdoor performance area. However, the
indoor audience can be conceived as a nexus between the interior and exterior, and thus
include only one of them.
Given the delicate location in the park, the area occupied by the building in plan cannot exceed
one third of the plot.

General criteria and Organization of the competition
Registration and Eligibility
The call is public and open to all undergraduate students, both from Architecture as from
related careers. Students must be able to prove, by any official document (enrolment papers,
student card, etc.) that, when the registration period opens, they are studying. All
postgraduate students, whose undergraduate degree is not older than 3 years, can also
participate.
Participation can be individual or in group, with a maximum of six members per team
allowed.
Teams may consist of multidisciplinary members (artists, philosophers, photographers, etc.).
Though not strictly necessary, we recommended the presence of at least one member
connected with the world of architecture. Teams can have members of different nationalities
and they don’t necessarily have to study in the same centre.
The registration fee corresponds to the amount of money to be paid by each participating
team, regardless of how many members the team has.
If a team or participant wants to submit more than one proposal for the same competition,
they must register twice (or as many times as projects they intend to present) and pay the
corresponding amount for each proposal.
Under no circumstances the participation of any member of the jury, or anyone professionally
related to them, will be permitted.

Publications
ArchMedium maintains relationships with some of the most important magazines and
publishers of architecture worldwide. For each competition a publication is made in the
magazine or book which better adjusts to the theme of the competition, and depending on the
final result other publications may be interested in publishing the content.
We also maintain close contact with the most visited architecture blogs and portals on the
web, where the work of the finalists will also be published. It is difficult to make an estimation
of the number of websites where your work may be published, as many of them base their
content on magazine publications or on other important blogs. In turn, magazines in take
much of their content out of specialized blogs

A public and free Access exhibition will be organized at the Architecture School of Barcelona.
The exhibition will be probably held in other locations, depending on the interest of other
universities and cultural centres.

FAQ
From the first day of the contest and until 3 days before the deadline for proposals,
participants are welcome to ask all those questions that can help to properly understand the
project and its objectives. Questions on how the competition works are also accepted.
Questions that are not solved in this paper on in the FAQ section of our website should be
made through the ArchMedium FaceBook page, which can be accessed from the FAQ section
of our main website (www.archmedium.com).
Documentation

drawings, topography, etc. will be available for download at the contest website so that any
participant or interested parties can have access to it. Participants can also create their own
documents.
Presentation
Each team must submit their Project in one horizontal panel of din-A1 dimensions.
This panel must be identifiable with the inscription code that ArchMedium submits to all
registered participants by email. Any panel that does not show this code will be automatically
excluded from the voting process.
Participants are given total freedom to decide what information they want to include in the
panel. The information included in the panel should be the one that better explains the
project. By giving this freedom we try to help participants explain their project the best way
they can think of in a limited presentation space. Although any information can be included in
the panel the following are recommended to appear:
• Concept justification and explanation.
• Representative floor plans.
• Representative full or partial section.
• Perspectives.
The representation technique is free (2D drawings, pictures from models, hand drawings,
renders, photo collage, etc.) and the jury will assess both the originality of the presentation, as
well as the clarity and quality achieved when expressing the main ideas of the project.
Including a lot of text is not recommendable, as the project should be understandable through
graphic material. Although some notes can be acceptable. Any note or other kind of text must
be written English or Spanish. Any text written in a different language will be ignored.
Note that this is an ideas contest, so there is no need to give any solution to structure,
installations issues, etc. Just as no rules or, planning or construction regulations, should be
taken into account.
Proposals must be submitted through the ArchMedium intranet before the deadline indicated
on the calendar. After the deadline date the uploading process will be automatically closed
and no more proposals will be admitted.
The din-A1 panel (72 ppp) must be in JPG format with the inscription code as the name of the
file.
The document must not weight more than 5MB.
Evaluation Criteria
The projects will be evaluated based on the following criteria (among others):
• Presentation. Clearly express the main ideas of the project and quality of the presentation.
• Integration with the environment: Ability to relate to the urban and historical environment.
• Architectural design of the proposal and its capacity to adapt to the program and become
an icon of what it represents and of the city of Vienna.
The jury reserves the right to award any proposal that fails at any of the parameters of the
contest, as long as it justifies the breach of the rule in favor of the architectural design of the
proposal.
Voting process

format so that they can privately review and include, if they consider it necessary, any of the
non-selected projects in the initial list of 50 projects.
3. At the meeting, the jurors will discuss all the pre-selected projects (The ArchMedium’s
selected 50 projects plus the projects added by the jury) to decide the winner, second and
third prize and honorable mentions.
