PRAYERS FOR THE HOLY MASS

Do Be Done Before the Holy Mass

INTENTIONS FOR MASS

Eternal Father, I offer You the sacrifice wherein Your dear Son Jesus offered Himself upon the cross and which He now renews upon this altar, to adore You and

to give You that honor which is Your due, acknowledging Your supreme dominion ever all things and their absolute dependence on You, for You are our first beginning and our last end; to give You thanks for countless benefits received; to appease Your justice provoked to anger by so many sins, and to offer You worthy satisfaction for the same; and finally to implore Your grace and mercy for myself, for all those who are in tribulation and distress, for all poor sinners, for the whole world, and for the blessed souls in purgatory.

Partial indulgence

To Be Done After the Holy Mass

SOUL OF CHRIST

Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; 0 good Jesus, hear me; Within Thy wounds, hide

me; Permit me not to be separated from 'Thee; From the wicked foe defend me; In the hour of my death call me, And bid me come unto Thee, That with all Thy saints I may praise Thee For ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS BEFORE AND AFTER CONFESSION

Prayer before Confession

Receive my confession, O most loving and gracious Lord Jesus Christ, only hope for the salvation of my soul. Grant to me true contrition of soul, so that day and night I may by penance make satisfaction for my many sins. Savior of the world, O good Jesus, Who gave Yourself to the death of the Cross to save sinners, look upon me, most wretched of all sinners; have pity on me, and give me the light to know my sins, true sorrow for them, and a firm purpose of never committing them again. O gracious Virgin Mary, Immaculate Mother of Jesus, I implore you to obtain for me by your powerful intercession these graces from your Divine Son. St. Joseph, pray for me.

Prayer after Confession

AN ACT OF CONTRITION:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.

1.1. THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY

Optional Opening Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

A. Begin with Begin with the Sign of the Cross B. 1 Our Father C. 1 Hail Mary

D. The Apostle's Creed E. Then, on the large bead before each decade:

“Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.”

F. On the ten small beads of each decade, say:

“For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 4 -

Conclude with (Say 3 Times): “Holy God,

Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,

have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

1.2. 3 O'CLOCK PRAYER TO THE DIVINE MERCY 3 O'clock Prayer To The Divine Mercy

“You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls and the ocean of mercy opened up for the

whole world. O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,

envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.”

“O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us, I trust in

You.”

1.3. THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY AS A NOVENA

The Chaplet can be said anytime, but the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena.

He promised, "By this Novena (of Chaplets), I will grant

every possible grace to souls." For each of the nine days, our Lord gave Saint

Faustina a different intention: all mankind, especially

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 5 -

sinners; the souls of priests and religious; all devout and faithful souls; those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus; the souls who have separated themselves from the Church; the meek and humble souls and the souls of little children; the souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy; the souls detained in purgatory; and souls who have become lukewarm.

"I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death."

We, too, can make a novena of prayer for these

intentions and others, especially by praying the Chaplet

of The Divine Mercy. During the Solemn Novena leading to Divine Mercy

Sunday, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy should be offered

each day for the day's intentions.

Intentions for Each Day of the Novena

FIRST DAY "Today bring to Me all mankind, especially all sinners,

and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of

souls plunges Me." Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to

have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart, and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by Your love which unites You to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially upon poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 6 -

of His sorrowful Passion show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

SECOND DAY "Today bring to Me the Souls of Priests and Religious,

and immerse them in My unfathomable mercy. It was they who gave me strength to endure My bitter Passion.

Through them as through channels My mercy flows out upon mankind."

Most Merciful Jesus, from whom comes all that is good, increase Your grace in men and women consecrated to Your service,* that they may perform worthy works of mercy; and that all who see them may glorify the Father of Mercy who is in heaven.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the company of chosen ones in Your vineyard - upon the souls of priests and religious; and endow them with the strength of Your blessing. For the love of the Heart of Your Son in which they are enfolded, impart to them Your power and light, that they may be able to guide others in the way of salvation and with one voice sing praise to Your boundless mercy for ages without end.

Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

* In the original text, Saint Faustina uses the pronoun "us" since she was offering this prayer as a consecrated religious sister. The wording adapted here is intended to make the prayer suitable for universal use.

THIRD DAY "Today bring to Me all Devout and Faithful Souls, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. These souls

brought me consolation on the Way of the Cross. They were a drop of consolation in the midst of an ocean of

bitterness."

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 7 -

Most Merciful Jesus, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this grace of You by that most wondrous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

FOURTH DAY "Today bring to Me those who do not believe in God and those who do not know Me, I was thinking also of them

during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy."

Most compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

…Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

*Our Lord's original words here were "the pagans." Since the pontificate of Pope John XXIII, the Church has seen fit to replace this term with clearer and more appropriate terminology.

FIFTH DAY "Today bring to Me the Souls of those who have separated

themselves from My Church*, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to

unity with the Church My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion."

Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son's Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

*Our Lord's original words here were "heretics and schismatics," since He spoke to Saint Faustina within the context of her times. As of the Second Vatican Council, Church authorities have seen fit not to use those designations in accordance with the explanation given in the Council's Decree on Ecumenism (n.3). Every pope since the Council has reaffirmed that usage. Saint Faustina herself, her heart always in harmony with the mind of the Church, most certainly

- 9 -

would have agreed. When at one time, because of the decisions of her superiors and father confessor, she was not able to execute Our Lord's inspirations and orders, she declared: "I will follow Your will insofar as You will permit me to do so through Your representative. O my Jesus " I give priority to the voice of the Church over the voice with which You speak to me" (497). The Lord confirmed her action and praised her for it.

SIXTH DAY Today bring to Me the Meek and Humble Souls and the Souls of Little Children, and immerse them in My mercy.

These souls most closely resemble My Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as

earthly Angels, who will keep vigil at My altars. I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. I favor humble souls

with My confidence. Most Merciful Jesus, You yourself have said,

"Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart." Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy and they are the heavenly Father's favorites. They are a sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God Himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon meek souls, upon humble souls, and upon little children who are enfolded in the abode which is the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls bear the closest resemblance to Your Son. Their fragrance rises from the earth and reaches Your very throne. Father of mercy and of all goodness, I beg You by the love You bear these souls and by the delight You take in them: Bless the whole world, that all souls together may sing out the praises of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

- 10 -

SEVENTH DAY Today bring to Me the Souls who especially venerate and glorify My Mercy*, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most

deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at

the hour of death. Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself,

receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your mercy. These souls are mighty with the very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident of Your mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate Your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy, and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God: Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He, Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

*The text leads one to conclude that in the first prayer directed to Jesus, Who is the Redeemer, it is "victim" souls and contemplatives

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 11 -

that are being prayed for; those persons, that is, that voluntarily offered themselves to God for the salvation of their neighbor (see Col 1:24; 2 Cor 4:12). This explains their close union with the Savior and the extraordinary efficacy that their invisible activity has for others. In the second prayer, directed to the Father from whom comes "every worthwhile gift and every genuine benefit, "we recommend the "active" souls, who promote devotion to The Divine Mercy and exercise with it all the other works that lend themselves to the spiritual and material uplifting of their brethren.

EIGHTH DAY "Today bring to Me the Souls who are in the prison of

Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to

bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if

you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off

their debt to My justice." Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that

You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 12 -

beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

NINTH DAY "Today bring to Me the Souls who have become Lukewarm,

and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. These souls wound My Heart most painfully. My soul suffered the most

dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried out: 'Father,

take this cup away from Me, if it be Your will.' For them, the last hope of salvation is to run to My mercy."

Most compassionate Jesus, You are Compassion Itself. I bring lukewarm souls into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart. In this fire of Your pure love, let these tepid souls who, like corpses, filled You with such deep loathing, be once again set aflame. O Most Compassionate Jesus, exercise the omnipotence of Your mercy and draw them into the very ardor of Your love, and bestow upon them the gift of holy love, for nothing is beyond Your power.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon lukewarm souls who are nonetheless enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Father of Mercy, I beg You by the bitter Passion of Your Son and by His three-hour agony on the Cross: Let them, too, glorify the abyss of Your mercy. Amen. …Do The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

PROMISES OF THE DIVINE MERCY MADE TO SAINT MARY FAUSTINA KOWALSKA

Promises who those who venerate the Divine Mercy image: "Paint the image according to the pattern you see, with the

signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and throughout the world." (Diary, 47)

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 13 -

"I promise that the soul that shall venerate this image will not perish." (Diary, 48)

"Jesus looked at me and said, Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is the Feast of My Mercy. If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity." (Diary, 965)

"My image already is in your soul. I desire that there be a Feast of Mercy. I want this image, which you will paint with a brush, to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy." (Diary, 49)

"I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: 'Jesus, I trust in You'" (Diary, 327)

"I desire that the image be publicly honored." (Diary, 414) "By means of this image, I shall be granting many graces to souls; so let every soul have access to it." (Diary, 570)

Promises for Praying the Chaplet: "Oh, what great graces I will grant to souls who say this

Chaplet. Write down these words, my daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize my unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the fount of my mercy; let them profit from the blood and water which gushed forth for them" (Diary, 848) .

"Say unceasingly the Chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it, they will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy" (diary, 687).

The Promise Of The Grace Of Mercy For The Dying: "It pleases me to grant everything souls ask of me by saying

the chaplet. When hardened sinners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one. Write this for the benefit of distressed souls; when a soul sees and realizes the gravity of its sins, when the whole abyss of the misery into which it immersed itself is displayed before its eyes, let it not despair, but with trust let it throw itself into the arms of My mercy, as a child

- 14 -

into the arms of its beloved mother. Tell them no soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame. I delight particularly in a soul that has placed its trust in My goodness. Write that when they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Saviour" (Diary, 1541).

"At the hour of their death, I defend every soul that will say this Chaplet as I do my own glory. When this Chaplet is said by the bedside of a dying person, God's anger is placated and His unfathomable mercy envelops the soul" (Diary, 811)

"I desire that this mercy flow out upon the whole world through your heart. Let no one who approaches you go away without that trust in my mercy, which I so ardently desire for souls. Pray as much as you can for the dying. By your entreaties, obtain for them trust in my mercy, because they have most need of trust, and have it the least" (Diary, 1777) Promises to all the apostles of Divine Mercy: “Souls who spread the honour of My mercy I shield through their entire lives as a tender mother her infant” (Diary 1075). “All those souls who will glorify My mercy and spread its worship, encouraging others to trust in My mercy, will not experience terror at the hour of death. My mercy will shield them in that final battle..." (Diary 1540)

Promises who those who pray at 3’oclock: “In this hour I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion. (Diary 1320).” In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others simply by asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world - mercy triumphed over justice(Diary, 1572).

Promises who those who pray the Novena: By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls.(Diary 796) To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak (Diary 1521).

For the sinners: In short, the main reason that Jesus wanted this Feast to be

established is that He wanted to "throw a lifeline," so to speak, to

1. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION

- 15 -

souls who are perishing, souls who are drowning in sin and despair. That lifeline is this Feast, with all the tremendous promises of graces and benefits which Jesus attached to it. As He said to St. Faustina, He wanted to make this Feast day a special "refuge and shelter" for the "consolation" of souls. (Diary 1517), Jesus said: "the Feast of My Mercy has issued forth from My very depths for the consolation of the whole world." In short, Jesus gave us this Feast as both a comfort and a lifeline for souls.

The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion: shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.* [our emphasis] On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will I contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699)

Promises who those who Trust: The soul that trusts in My mercy is most fortunate, because I myself take care of it”. (Diary 1273)

“The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is - trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive” (Diary, 1578).

“I have opened My Heart as a living fountain of mercy. Let all souls draw life from it. Let them approach this sea of mercy with great trust. Sinners will attain justification, and the just will be strengthened in goodness” (Diary, 1520).

Tell them no soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame. I delight particularly in a soul that has placed its trust in My goodness. (Diary 1541)

He who trusts in my Mercy will not perish, for all his affairs are Mine, and his enemies will be shattered at the base of my footstool (Diary, 723)

FOR THE SINS OF ALL MANKIND, THE PRECIOUS

OUR LORD MADE FIVE PROMISES TO ST. BRIDGET 1. THE SOUL WHO PRAYS THEM WILL SUFFER NO PURGATORY. 2. THE SOUL WHO PRAYS THEM WILL BE ACCEPTED AMONG THE MARTYRS AS THOUGH HE HAD SPILLED HIS BLOOD FOR HIS FAITH. 3. THE SOUL WHO PRAYS THEM CAN CHOOSE THREE OTHERS WHOM JESUS WILL THEN KEEP IN A STATE OF GRACE SUFFICIENT TO BECOME HOLY. 4. If the soul praying these prayers dies before the entire twelve years of prayers have been completed, the Lord will accept them as having been prayed in their entirety, because the intention of the soul was to complete them as directed. If a day or a few days are missed due to a valid reason, they can be made up for later, at the soul's earliest opportunity.

2.2. AVE MARIS STELLA AND PROMISES

- 21 -

Ave Maris Stella Hail thou Star of Ocean, Portal of

the Sky, Ever Virgin Mother Of the

Lord Most High.

O! by Gabriel’s Ave, Uttered long

ago, Eva’s name reversing

Established peace below.

Break the captive’s fetters, Light on blindness

pour, All our ills expelling, Every bliss implore.

Show thyself a Mother, Offer Him our sighs,

Who for us incarnate, Did not thee despise.

Virgin of all Virgins, To thy shelter take us,

Gentlest of the gentle, Chaste and gentle make

us.

Still, as on we journey, Help our weak

endeavour, Till with thee and Jesus, We rejoice

forever.

Through the highest heaven, To the almighty

Three, Father, Son, and Spirit, One same glory

be. Amen.

Promises To Those Who Sing “Ave Maris Stella” During a riot at Rome, a mob came to the house

where St Bridget lived: a leader talked of burning Bridget alive. She prayed to Our Lord to know if she should flee to safety. Jesus advised her to stay: “It doesn’t matter if they plot your death. My power will break the malice of your enemies: if Mine crucified Me, it is because I permitted it.

” Our Blessed Mother added: “Sing as a group the AVE MARIS STELLA and I’ll guard you from every danger.”

- 22 -

2.3. The 15 prayers our Lord gave to Saint Bridget of Sweden

(TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

THE FIRST PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who

love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire,

Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved

that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among

men, even assuming human nature at the fullness

of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings

Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy

conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it

was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the

Divine plan.

Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper

with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou

gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood,

and while at the same time thou didst sweetly

console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming

Passion. Remember the sadness and bitterness

which Thou didst experience in Thy Soul as Thou

Thyself bore witness saying: "My Soul is sorrowful

even unto death."

Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou

didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment

of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 23 -

times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast

betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the

people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated,

accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by

three judges during the flower of Thy youth and

during the solemn Paschal season. Remember

that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and

clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes

were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with

thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was

crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts

and outrages. In memory of all these pains and

sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy

Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death

true contrition, a sincere and entire confession,

worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my

sins. Amen.

THE SECOND PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! True liberty of angels, Paradise of

delights, remember the horror and sadness which

Thou didst endure when Thy enemies, like furious

lions, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of

insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard-

of-cruelties, tormented Thee at will. In

consideration of these torments and insulting

words, I beseech Thee, O my Saviour, to deliver

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 24 -

me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, and

to bring me, under Thy protection, to the perfection

of eternal salvation. Amen.

THE THIRD PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY.

O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom

nothing can encompass or limit, Thou Who dost

enfold and hold all under Thy Loving power,

remember the very bitter pain Thou didst suffer

when the Jews nailed Thy Sacred Hands and Feet

to the Cross by blow after blow with big blunt nails,

and not finding Thee in a pitiable enough state to

satisfy their rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and

added pain to pain, and with indescribable cruelty

stretched Thy Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from

all sides, thus dislocating Thy Limbs. I beg of Thee,

O Jesus, by the memory of this most Loving

suffering of the Cross, to grant me the grace to

fear Thee and to Love Thee. Amen.

THE FOURTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Heavenly Physician, raised aloft on the

Cross to heal our wounds with Thine, remember

the bruises which Thou didst suffer and the

weakness of all Thy Members which were distended

to such a degree that never was there pain like

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 25 -

unto Thine. From the crown of Thy Head to the

Soles of Thy Feet there was not one spot on Thy

Body that was not in torment, and yet, forgetting

all Thy sufferings, Thou didst not cease to pray to

Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemies, saying:

"Father forgive them for they know not what they

do." Through this great Mercy, and in memory of

this suffering, grant that the remembrance of Thy

Most Bitter Passion may effect in us a perfect

contrition and the remission of all our sins. Amen.

THE FIFTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Mirror of eternal splendor, remember the

sadness which Thou experienced, when

contemplating in the light of Thy Divinity the

predestination of those who would be saved by the

merits of Thy Sacred Passion, Thou didst see at the

same time, the great multitude of reprobates who

would be damned for their sins, and Thou didst

complain bitterly of those hopeless lost and

unfortunate sinners. Through this abyss of

compassion and pity, and especially through the

goodness which Thou displayed to the good thief

when Thou saidst to him: "This day, thou shalt be

with Me in Paradise." I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus,

that at the hour of my death, Thou wilt show me

mercy. Amen.

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 26 -

THE SIXTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Beloved and most desirable King,

remember the grief Thou didst suffer, when naked

and like a common criminal, Thou was fastened

and raised on the Cross, when all Thy relatives and

friends abandoned Thee, except Thy Beloved

Mother, who remained close to Thee during Thy

agony and whom Thou didst entrust to Thy faithful

disciple when Thou saidst to Mary: "Woman, behold

thy son!" and to St. John: "Son, behold thy

Mother!"

I beg of Thee O my Saviour, by the sword of

sorrow which pierced the soul of Thy holy Mother,

to have compassion on me in all my affliction and

tribulations, both corporal and spiritual, and to

assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour

of my death. Amen.

THE SEVENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Inexhaustible Fountain of compassion,

Who by a profound gesture of Love, said from the

Cross: "I thirst!" suffered from the thirst for the

salvation of the human race. I beg of Thee O my

Saviour, to inflame in our hearts the desire to tend

toward perfection in all our acts; and to extinguish

in us the concupiscence of the flesh and the ardor

of worldly desires. Amen

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 27 -

THE EIGHTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delight of the spirit,

by the bitterness of the vinegar and gall which

Thou didst taste on the Cross for Love of us, grant

us the grace to receive worthily Thy Precious Body

and Blood during our life and at the hour of our

death, that they may serve as a remedy and

consolation for our souls. Amen.

THE NINTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Royal virtue, joy of the mind, recall the

pain Thou didst endure when, plunged in an ocean

of bitterness at the approach of death, insulted,

outraged by the Jews, Thou didst cry out in a loud

voice that Thou was abandoned by Thy Father,

saying: "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken

me?"

Through this anguish, I beg of Thee, O my Saviour,

not to abandon me in the terrors and pains of my

death. Amen.

THE TENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Who art the beginning and end of all

things, life and virtue, remembers that for our

sakes Thou was plunged in an abyss of suffering

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 28 -

from the soles of Thy Feet to the crown of Thy

Head. In consideration of the enormity of Thy

Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy

Commandments, whose way is wide and easy for

those who love Thee. Amen.

THE ELEVENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of Thee, in

memory of Thy Wounds which penetrated to the

very marrow of Thy Bones and to the depth of Thy

being, to draw me, a miserable sinner,

overwhelmed by my offenses, away from sin and to

hide me from Thy Face justly irritated against me,

hide me in Thy wounds, until Thy anger and just

indignation shall have passed away. Amen.

THE TWELFTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Mirror of Truth, symbol of unity, bond of

charity, remember the multitude of wounds with

which Thou wast afflicted from head to foot, torn

and reddened by the spilling of Thy adorable Blood.

O great and universal pain, which Thou didst suffer

in Thy virginal flesh for love of us! Sweetest Jesus!

What is there that Thou couldst have done for us

which Thou has not done!

May the fruit of Thy suffering be renewed in my

soul by the faithful remembrance of Thy Passion,

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 29 -

and may Thy love increase in my heart each day,

until I see Thee in eternity: Thou Who art the

treasure of every real good and every joy, which I

beg Thee to grant me, O Sweetest Jesus, in

heaven. Amen.

THE THIRTEENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Strong Lion, Immortal and Invincible King,

remember the pain which Thou didst endure when

all Thy strength, both moral and physical, was

entirely exhausted, Thou didst bow Thy Head,

saying: "It is consummated!" Through this anguish

and grief, I beg of Thee Lord Jesus, to have mercy

on me at the hour of my death when my mind will

be greatly troubled and my soul will be in anguish.

Amen.

THE FOURTEENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and

Figure of His Substance, remember the simple and

humble recommendation Thou didst make of Thy

Soul to Thy Eternal Father, saying: "Father, into

Thy Hands I commend My Spirit!" And with Thy

Body all torn, and Thy Heart Broken, and the

bowels of Thy Mercy open to redeem us, Thou didst

Expire. By this Precious Death, I beg of Thee O

King of Saints, comfort me and help me to resist

the devil, the flesh and the world, so that being

2.3. THE 15 PRAYERS JESUS GAVE TO SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN (TO BE DONE DAILY FOR 1 YEAR)

- 30 -

dead to the world I may live for Thee alone. I beg

of Thee at the hour of my death to receive me, a

pilgrim and an exile returning to Thee. Amen.

THE FIFTEENTH PRAYER

1 OUR FATHER AND 1 HAIL MARY

O Jesus! True and fruitful Vine! Remember the

abundant outpouring of Blood which Thou didst so

generously shed from Thy Sacred Body as juice

from grapes in a wine press. From Thy Side,

pierced with a lance by a soldier, blood and water

issued forth until there was not left in Thy Body a

single drop, and finally, like a bundle of myrrh lifted

to the top of the Cross Thy delicate Flesh was

destroyed, the very Substance of Thy Body

withered, and the Marrow of Thy Bones dried up.

Through this bitter Passion and through the

outpouring of Thy Precious Blood, I beg of Thee, O

Sweet Jesus, to receive my soul when I am in my

death agony. Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER:

O Sweet Jesus! Pierce my heart so that my tears of

penitence and love will be my bread day and night;

may I be converted entirely to Thee, may my heart

be Thy perpetual habitation, may my conversation

be pleasing to Thee, and may the end of my life be

so praiseworthy that I may merit Heaven and there

with Thy saints, praise Thee forever.

St. Bridget of Sweden (1302-1373) Mother, Widow, Foundress of the Order of the Holy Savior Mystic, Patron of Sweden Proclaimed by John Paul II: Patroness of Europe Feast: July 23 - October 8

HISTORY: St. Bridget of Sweden was born June 14, 1303 to Birger Persson, a governor, judge and wealthy land owner and Ingeborg Bengtsdotter, a deeply pious woman.

She married Prince Ulf Gudmarsson a noble and pious man. They had eight children including St. Catherine of Sweden. When her husband died in 1344 she devoted herself to religious life. In 1346 she founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior. St. Bridget is known for the revelations she received on the wounds and passion of Jesus, known as the 15 Prayers of St. Bridget. She died July 23, 1373 and was canonized on October 7, 1391.

Saint Bridget prayed for a long time to know how many blows Our Lord suffered during His terrible Passion. Rewarding her patience, one day He appeared to her and said: "I received 5475 blows upon My Body. If you wish to honor each of them in some way pray the following prayers each day for a whole year. When the year is over, you will have honored each one of My Wounds." Our Lord gave many promises to those who recite these prayers. Many people have done this and benefited greatly.

- 34 -

ROSARY OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

ACT OF CONTRITION

O MY GOD I AM HEARTILY SORRY FOR

HAVING OFFENDED THEE, AND I DETEST ALL MY SINS BECAUSE I DREAD THE LOSS OF HEAVEN

AND THE PAINS OF HELL; BUT MOST OF ALL BECAUSE THEY OFFEND THEE MY GOD, WHO ART

ALL GOOD AND DESERVING OF ALL MY LOVE. I FIRMLY RESOLVE WITH THE HELP OF THY GRACE TO CONFESS MY SINS, TO DO PENANCE

AND TO AMEND MY LIFE. AMEN.

FIRST SORROW - THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON. (LUKE II, 34-35.) "And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; and thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that

out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed."

HOW GREAT WAS THE SHOCK TO MARY'S HEART AT HEARING THE SORROWFUL WORDS, IN WHICH HOLY SIMEON TOLD THE BITTER PASSION AND DEATH OF HER SWEET JESUS, SINCE IN THAT SAME MOMENT SHE REALIZED IN HER MIND ALL THE INSULTS, BLOWS, AND TORMENTS WHICH THE IMPIOUS MEN WERE TO OFFER TO THE REDEEMER OF THE WORLD. BUT A STILL SHARPER SWORD PIERCED HER SOUL. IT WAS THE THOUGHT OF MEN'S INGRATITUDE TO HER BELOVED SON. NOW CONSIDER THAT BECAUSE OF YOUR SINS YOU ARE UNHAPPILY AMONG THE UNGRATEFUL.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

SECOND SORROW - THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT. (MATT. II, 13-14.) "And after they (the wise men) were departed, behold an angel of the lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: arise and

take the child and his mother and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that herod will seek the child to destroy him. Who arose and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of herod."

CONSIDER THE SHARP SORROW WHICH MARY FELT WHEN, ST. JOSEPH BEING WARNED BY AN ANGEL, SHE HAD TO FLEE BY NIGHT IN ORDER TO PRESERVE HER BELOVED CHILD FROM THE SLAUGHTER DECREED BY HEROD. WHAT ANGUISH WAS HERS, IN LEAVING JUDEA, LEST SHE SHOULD BE OVERTAKEN BY THE SOLDIERS OF THE CRUEL KING! HOW GREAT HER PRIVATIONS IN THAT LONG JOURNEY! WHAT SUFFERINGS SHE BORE IN THAT LAND OF EXILE, WHAT SORROW AMID THAT PEOPLE GIVEN TO IDOLATRY! BUT CONSIDER HOW OFTEN YOU HAVE RENEWED THAT BITTER GRIEF OF MARY, WHEN YOUR SINS HAVE CAUSED HER SON TO FLEE FROM YOUR HEART.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

THIRD SORROW - THE LOSS OF THE CHILD JESUS IN THE TEMPLE. (LUKE II, 43-45.) "And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. And thinking that he was in the company,

they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him."

HOW DREAD WAS THE GRIEF OF MARY, WHEN SHE SAW THAT SHE HAD LOST HER BELOVED SON! AND AS IF TO INCREASE HER SORROW, WHEN SHE SOUGHT HIM DILIGENTLY AMONG HER KINSFOLK AND ACQUAINTANCE, SHE COULD HEAR NO TIDINGS OF HIM. NO HINDRANCES STAYED HER, NOR WEARINESS, NOR DANGER; BUT SHE FORTHWITH RETURNED TO JERUSALEM, AND FOR THREE LONG DAYS SOUGHT HIM SORROWING. GREAT BE YOUR CONFUSION, O MY SOUL, WHO HAS SO OFTEN LOST YOUR JESUS BY YOUR SINS, AND HAS GIVEN NO HEED TO SEEK HIM AT ONCE, A SIGN THAT YOU MAKE

VERY LITTLE OR NO ACCOUNT OF THE PRECIOUS TREASURE OF DIVINE LOVE.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

FOURTH SORROW - THE MEETING OF JESUS AND MARY ON THE WAY OF THE CROSS. (LUKE XXIII, 27.) "And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him."

COME, O YE SINNERS, COME AND SEE IF YE CAN ENDURE SO SAD A SIGHT. THIS MOTHER, SO TENDER AND LOVING, MEETS HER BELOVED

SON, MEETS HIM AMID AN IMPIOUS RABBLE, WHO DRAG HIM TO A CRUEL DEATH, WOUNDED, TORN BY STRIPES, CROWNED WITH THORNS, STREAMING WITH BLOOD, BEARING HIS HEAVY CROSS. AH, CONSIDER, MY SOUL, THE GRIEF OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN THUS BEHOLDING HER SON! WHO WOULD NOT WEEP AT SEEING THIS MOTHER'S GRIEF? BUT WHO HAS BEEN THE CAUSE OF SUCH WOE? I, IT IS I, WHO WITH MY SINS HAVE SO CRUELLY WOUNDED THE HEART OF MY SORROWING MOTHER! AND YET I AM NOT MOVED; I AM AS A STONE, WHEN MY HEART SHOULD BREAK BECAUSE OF MY INGRATITUDE.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

FIFTH SORROW - THE CRUCIFIXION. (JOHN XIX, L8-25-27.) "They crucified him. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother. When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: woman: behold thy son. After that he saith to the disciple: behold thy

mother."

LOOK, DEVOUT SOUL, LOOK TO CALVARY, WHEREON ARE RAISED TWO ALTARS OF SACRIFICE, ONE ON THE BODY OF JESUS, THE OTHER ON THE HEART OF MARY. SAD IS THE SIGHT OF THAT DEAR MOTHER DROWNED IN A SEA OF WOE, SEEING HER BELOVED SON, PART OF HER VERY SELF, CRUELLY NAILED TO THE SHAMEFUL TREE OF THE CROSS. AH ME! HOW EVERY BLOW OF THE HAMMER, HOW EVERY STRIPE WHICH FELL ON

- 37 -

THE SAVIOUR'S FORM, FELL ALSO ON THE DISCONSOLATE SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN. AS SHE STOOD AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS, PIERCED BY THE SWORD OF SORROW, SHE TURNED HER EYES ON HIM, UNTIL SHE KNEW THAT HE LIVED NO LONGER AND HAD RESIGNED HIS SPIRIT TO HIS ETERNAL FATHER. THEN HER OWN SOUL WAS LIKE TO HAVE LEFT THE BODY AND JOINED ITSELF TO THAT OF JESUS.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

SIXTH SORROW - THE TAKING DOWN OF THE BODY OF JESUS FROM THE CROSS. (MARK XV, 43-46.) "Joseph of Arimathea, a noble counselor, came and went in boldly to pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And Joseph buying fine linen, and taking him down, wrapped him up in the fine linen."

CONSIDER THE MOST BITTER SORROW WHICH RENT THE SOUL OF MARY, WHEN SHE SAW THE DEAD BODY OF HER DEAR JESUS ON HER KNEES, COVERED WITH BLOOD, ALL TORN WITH DEEP WOUNDS. O MOURNFUL MOTHER, A BUNDLE OF MYRRH, INDEED, IS THY BELOVED TO THEE. WHO WOULD NOT PITY THEE? WHOSE HEART WOULD NOT BE SOFTENED, SEEING AFFLICTION WHICH WOULD MOVE A STONE? BEHOLD JOHN NOT TO BE COMFORTED, MAGDALEN AND THE OTHER MARY IN DEEP AFFLICTION, AND NICODEMUS, WHO CAN SCARCELY BEAR HIS SORROW.

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

SEVENTH SORROW - THE BURIAL OF JESUS. (JOHN XIX, 41-42.)

"Now there was in the place where he was crucified, a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein no man yet had been laid. There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulcher was nigh at hand."

CONSIDER THE SIGHS WHICH BURST FROM MARY'S SAD HEART WHEN SHE SAW HER BELOVED JESUS LAID WITHIN THE TOMB. WHAT GRIEF WAS HERS WHEN SHE SAW THE STONE LIFTED TO COVER THAT SACRED TOMB! SHE GAZED A LAST

TIME ON THE LIFELESS BODY OF HER SON, AND COULD SCARCE DETACH HER EYES FROM THOSE GAPING WOUNDS. AND WHEN THE GREAT STONE WAS ROLLED TO THE DOOR OF THE SEPULCHER, OH, THEN INDEED HER HEART SEEMED TORN FROM HER BODY!

-1 OUR FATHER, 7 HAIL MARY & 1 GLORY BE TO THE FATHER-

Three "Hail Marys" are said at the end, in honor of the Tears of Our Sorrowful Mother.

LET US PRAY… O GOD, AT WHOSE PASSION, ACCORDING TO

THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON, A SWORD OF SORROW DID PIERCE THROUGH THE MOST SWEET SOUL OF THE GLORIOUS VIRGIN AND MOTHER MARY; GRANT THAT WE, WHO COMMEMORATE AND REVERENCE HER SORROWS, MAY EXPERIENCE THE BLESSED EFFECT OF THY PASSION, WHO LIVEST AND REIGNEST WORLD WITHOUT END. AMEN.

GRACES AND PROMISES ATTACHED TO THE PRACTICE OF THE DEVOTION IN HONOR OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY SORROWING

To the practice of daily praying seven Hail Mary’s while meditating on our lady’s tears and sorrows. These seven promises were revealed to St. Bridget of Sweden:

1. “I will grant peace to their families.” 2. “They will be enlightened about the Divine Mysteries.” 3. “I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.” 4. «I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my Divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.” 5. «I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.” 6. “I will visibly help them at the moment of their death — they will see the face of their mother.” 7. “I have obtained this grace from my Divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and sorrows will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness, since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son will be their eternal consolation and joy.”

According to St. Alphonsus de Liguori (the Glories of Mary) it was revealed to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary that at the request of our Lady, our lord promised four principal graces to those devoted to her sorrows: 1. That those who before death invoke the Divine Mother in the name of her sorrows will obtain true repentance of all their sins;

3. ROSARY OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (TO BE DONE DAILY)

2. That He will protect all who have this devotion in their tribulations, And will protect them especially at the hour of death; 3. That He will impress on their minds the remembrance of His passion; 4. That He will place such devout servants in Mother Mary’s hands to do with them as she wishes and to obtain for them all the graces She desires.

Virgin of Fátima, Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and the Earth, refuge of the sinners, we, adhering to the Marian Movement, we consecrate ourselves in a very special way to Your Immaculate Heart.

With this act of consecration we want to live with You and through You,

all the commitments imposed in our baptismal consecration; we commit ourselves to make within us that inner conversion, so required by the Gospel, that liberates us from all attachment to ourselves and from the easy commitments with the world, to be, like You, always available to make the Will of the Father.

And while we want to entrust you, sweetest and merciful Mother, our existence and Christian vocation, so that You do with them as you see fit for your designs of salvation, at this decisive hour that weighs on the world, we commit ourselves to live it according to Your desires, insofar as what it refers to a renewed spirit of prayer and penance, to the devoted and fervent participation in the celebration of the Eucharist and to the apostolate, the daily prayer of the Holy Rosary and to an austere way of life, according to the Gospel, so that I can be a good example for all in the observance of the Law of God, in the exercise of the Christian virtues, especially the virtue of purity.

We also promise You to be united to the Holy Father, the Hierarchy and our Priests, to place a barrier to those engaged in the Teaching process, that threatens the very foundations of the Church.

Under Your protection, today we also want to be the apostles of this unit of prayer and love to the Pope, so necessary for which we invoke from You a special protection.

Finally, we promise to bring the souls of those with whom we come in contact with, to a renewed devotion towards You.

Aware that atheism has shipwrecked a great number of souls, every since the demystification has entered the Holy Temple of God, and that sin and evil propagate more and more in the world, today we dare to raise our eyes, trusting in You, Mother of Jesus and our merciful and powerful Mother, and also to invoke and expect from you the salvation for all your children.

Oh Clement, Oh Loving, Oh Sweet Virgin Mary!

THE APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen

THE OUR FATHER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE HAIL MARY Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Fatima prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy".

(Our Lady at Fatima, 13th July 1917)

The Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

MEDITATIONS TO BE USED WHEN PRAYING THE DAILY HOLY ROSARY OR WHEN DOING THE FIVE

FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION (JOYFUL, SORROWFUL, GLORIOUS)

JOYFUL MYSTERIES (MONDAY & SATURDAY)

1. THE ANNUNCIATION O Immaculate Heart of Mary, God prepared you to become the Mother of His Divine Son by making you full of grace, immaculate from the first moment of your conception. God sent His messenger from heaven to ask

you to consent to be the Mother of our Savior. You humbly called yourself the handmaiden of the Lord, and the plan of redemption began. Teach us dear Mother, to imitate your humility, which pleased God so much. Make us love silence in our daily lives so we too can hear God speaking to us in our hearts. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS COMMITTED AGAINST YOUR IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

2. THE VISITATION O Immaculate Heart of Mary, in charity you traveled to assist your cousin Elizabeth, who was six months with child. You were the first one to bring the Good News of Jesus to others. When Elizabeth heard your sweet

voice, she was filled with the Holy Spirit, her baby was sanctified in her womb, and she called you the most blessed among women. Teach us dear Mother, to be charitable to all we meet in our daily lives; to be patient and kind to everyone without distinction. Make us love to serve others while we deny ourselves for the sake of imitating you and Jesus. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS COMMITTED AGAINST YOUR PERPETUAL VIRGINITY. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

3. THE BIRTH OF JESUS O Immaculate Heart of Mary, in complete detachment you traveled to Bethlehem to fulfill the prophecy that the messiah would be born in King David’s city. The trip was filled with much inconveniences, especially when

St. Joseph, your holy and chaste husband, told you there was no room in the inn. In poor surroundings you bore your only Son with joy and peace and became the Mother of God. Teach us, dear Mother, to be detached from the things of the world and from all things that can hinder our union with Jesus. Let us love poverty, privations and inconveniences just as you did. Make us treasure the spiritual meaning of Jesus’ birth and life in our hearts, as you did with each passing moment of your holy life. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS COMMITTED AGAINST YOUR DIVINE MATERNITY AND FOR THOSE WHO REFUSE TO ACCEPT YOU AS MOTHER OF ALL MANKIND. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

4. THE PRESENTATION OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE O Immaculate Heart of Mary, forty days after the birth of Jesus, in obedience to the law of Moses, you went to the Temple with St. Joseph to present Jesus to God and to submit

yourself to the law of Purification. This law didn’t apply to you or Jesus, but you submitted yourself to it to show us how obedient you want us to be. Teach us, dear Mother, true purity of heart so we can love God more and prove our love for Him by being obedient to the Magisterium of the Church. Make us faithfully obey our Holy Father, the Pope, and all bishops and clergy in union with him. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS OF THOSE WHO TRY

PUBLICLY TO IMPLANT IN CHILDREN’S HEARTS INDIFFERENCE, CONTEMPT AND EVEN HATRED TOWARD YOU. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

5. THE FINDING OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE O Immaculate Heart of Mary, after three long days, you and St. Joseph found Jesus in the Temple in the midst of the teachers of the Jewish Law. Out of obedience, Jesus returned

to Nazareth with you and St. Joseph and grew in strength and grace before God and man. Teach us, dear Mother, to be obedient to your message of Fatima, where you call us to a more perfect union with your Divine Son through devotion to your Immaculate Heart. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS OF THOSE WHO INSULT YOU DIRECTLY IN YOUR SACRED IMAGES. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

LUMINOUS MYSTERIES (THURSDAY)

1. THE BAPTISM OF JESUS O Immaculate Heart of Mary, when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan by Saint John the Baptist, the voice of our heavenly Father said: You are My beloved Son. On You My favor rests. Then the Holy Spirit descended on

Jesus in the form of a dove. Teach us, dear Mother, to be open to the Holy Spirit Who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts, so we can be filled with light and grace and do the Father’s will in all things. Make us faithful to our baptismal promises to love God and to serve Him in others.

2. THE WEDDING AT CANA O Immaculate Heart of Mary, at the wedding feast at Cana you noticed the wedding party needed help and you asked your beloved Son for His grace. You told the attendants at the

banquet, Do whatever He tells you, which shows us how powerful your intercession is with your Divine Son. Jesus performed the first of His miracles and changed common water into choice wine astonishing those who witnessed the event which enabled His disciples to believe in Him. Teach us, dear Mother, to become great disciples and believers in your Son. Make us always pray for assistance from Jesus and you in all our needs and concerns, trusting that our prayers will be answered in accord with the will of God.

3. ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD O Immaculate Heart of Mary, with humility and authority, Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God to the entire world by calling us to reform our lives and to believe in His words.

Teach us, dear Mother, to daily reform our lives so as to become closer to Jesus. Make us turn away from sin by having a great devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where the Mercy of God is waiting to fill us with light, peace and grace. Make us proclaim the Kingdom of God by always praying your Holy Rosary and by actively spreading this prayer throughout the world!

4. THE TRANSFIGURATION O Immaculate Heart of Mary, on Mount Tabor, Jesus, together with Moses and Elijah, appeared transfigured to Peter, John and James. The three disciples were lost in the contemplation of Jesus radiant in glory. From

a cloud, the heavenly Father said: This is My beloved Son...listen to Him. Teach us, dear Mother, to listen to the Divine Word of Jesus in His Gospels which teaches us how to live a holy life on earth so we can live in heaven with you and

your Divine Son forever. Make us daily fix our gaze on the radiant Holy Face of Jesus, shining in all His glory on Mount Tabor, Who is the way, the truth and the life!

5. THE INSTITUTION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST O Immaculate Heart of Mary, at the Last Supper, Jesus gave Himself to us in the Holy Eucharist and promised to be with us always in this great sacrament of His love.

Teach us, dear Mother, to have a deep love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, to receive Him worthily in the state of grace, to show proper reverence to Him in the Blessed Sacrament while realizing the importance of how much Jesus loves us and how much we should strive to love Him every day of our lives especially as our Eucharistic King! Make us desire to receive Jesus in Holy Communion as often as we can so as to be closely united with Him in life, and at the hour of our death.

SORROWFUL MYSTERY (TUESDAY & FRIDAY)

1. THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your Divine Son, in the Garden of Olives, began to suffer His sorrowful passion. Jesus suffered so much that He prayed to the Father, If it be possible, take these sufferings

from Me. But let it be as You, not I, would have it. His sufferings forced blood to issue forth from His pores. Even though Jesus’ sufferings were painful, He accepted the will of God and embraced His passion like a silent lamb for the redemption of the world. Teach us, dear Mother, to accept the will of God in our own lives and to be obedient even unto death. Make us deny ourselves in small things and lead us to the royal road of Calvary. AGAINST YOUR IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

2. THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR

O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary,

your Heart was nearly broken when you heard Pontius Pilate give the order to have Jesus

scourged at the pillar. Your eyes saw Jesus

humiliated when the soldiers stripped off His clothes and scourged Him till His body dripped with blood.

Teach us, dear Mother, to mortify our senses and to

lead pure and chaste lives for the glory of your Son. Make us understand all that Jesus suffered for love of

us and help us to love Him with undivided hearts. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS COMMITTED AGAINST YOUR PERPETUAL VIRGINITY. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

3. THE CROWNING WITH THORNS O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, after scourging Jesus the soldiers wanted to humiliate Him even more by mocking Him as a king. O Mother, you saw Jesus being crowned with sharp thorns as blood streamed

down His sorrowful face. The soldiers genuflected before Jesus and spit into His blood-covered face. Jesus stood in silence offering this bitter mystery to the Father for the redemption of mankind. Teach us, dear Mother, to accept all humiliations as Jesus did, and let us grow in the holy virtue of humility. Make us recognize we are but sinful children and that anything good in us belongs to God, the Author of life. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS COMMITTED AGAINST YOUR DIVINE MATERNITY AND FOR THOSE WHO REFUSE TO ACCEPT YOU AS MOTHER OF ALL MANKIND. sword of sorrow pierced your Heart as you

saw your Son weighed down with the wood of the Cross and suffering terribly with each painful step.

Oppressed and condemned, Jesus was led to Calvary

while the crowds laughed and mocked Him as a foolish and crazy man. Teach us, dear Mother, to be more

patient in our daily life in imitating the suffering Christ

more faithfully. Make us carry our daily crosses with patience and love and bring us into the intimacy of

your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS OF THOSE WHO TRY PUBLICLY TO IMPLANT IN CHILDREN’S HEARTS INDIFFERENCE, CONTEMPT AND EVEN HATRED TOWARD YOU. (FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION)

Cross, Jesus gave you to us to be our spiritual Mother and you are always close to the children who call out your holy name in joy and in sorrow. After three long hours of pain, you watched Jesus die a death of redemptive love for the salvation of the world. Teach us, dear Mother, to love one another as Jesus loves us, so that our love will be proof to the world that God is Infinite Love. Make us forgive our brothers from the heart so peace may reign in us and in the world. O IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, WE OFFER YOU THIS DECADE IN REPARATION FOR THE SINS OF THOSE WHO

I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of people from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church. 8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the Saints in Paradise. 9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary. 10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.

Indulgences from Enchiridion indulgentiarum Recitation of the Marian Rosary (Rosarii marialis recitatio)

An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, a remission, which one of the faithful, properly disposed and under certain definite conditions, can acquire through the Church, which authoritatively dispenses, applying the treasure of the satisfactions of Christ and the Saints.

An indulgence is either PLENARY or PARTIAL, depending upon whether it frees one from the whole or from a part of the temporal punishment due to sin. This means that one of the faithful who, with at least a contrite heart, performs a work enriched with a partial indulgence, is granted by the power of the Church that same amount of remission of temporal punishment as he has already obtained by the work itself. In other words, the remission is doubled, and that as often as the work prescribed is performed. A plenary indulgence means a full remission of temporal punishment, provided that several other conditions apply, in addition to the work performed or prayer said. A plenary indulgence is granted, if the Rosary is recited in a church or public oratory or in a family group, a religious Community or pious Association; a partial indulgence is granted in other circumstances.

"Now the Rosary is a certain formula of prayer, which is made up of fifteen decades of "Hail Marys" with an "Our Father" before each decade, and in which the recitation of each decade is accompanied by pious meditation on a particular mystery of our Redemption." (Roman Breviary) The name "Rosary," however, is

4. CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY & MEDITATIONS FOR THE HOLY ROSARY OR TO BE USED IN THE FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION

- 58 -

commonly used in reference to only a third part of the fifteen decades.

The gaining of the plenary indulgence is regulated by the following norms: 1) The recitation of a third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five decades must be recited continuously. 2) The vocal recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries. 3) In public recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner customary in the place; for private recitation, however, it suffices if the vocal recitation is accompanied by meditation on the mysteries.

FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION History of this Devotion

In the year of Our Lord, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six different times to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal with a most important message to the world concerning the salvation of souls and world peace. In her appearance on July 13th of that year she showed the children a vision of hell and said:

You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace... I shall come to ask for... the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays.… Eight years later, on December 10, 1925, the Blessed Virgin fulfilled her promise. On that day Our Lady appeared with the Child Jesus to Lucy — now Sister Lucy, and the sole surviving seer of the 1917 apparitions — in her convent in Pontevedra, Spain. She placed one hand on Sr. Lucy’s shoulder and in the other hand she showed her a Heart surrounded by thorns. The Child Jesus said to her:

4. CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY & MEDITATIONS FOR THE HOLY ROSARY OR TO BE USED IN THE FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION

- 59 -

Have compassion on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother, covered with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them. After this, the Blessed Virgin said:

Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and announce in my name that I promise to assist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months shall receive the sacrament of Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to my Immaculate Heart. Here it is important to consider that reparation is to be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Naturally, all reparation for sin is directed to God the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Ghost, but the Blessed Virgin’s unique role in the salvation of mankind makes sin especially hurtful to her Heart. And, making reparation means to make amends for this harm that has been done to her.

Requirements On the 1st Saturdays of 5 consecutive months: 1. Make a good Confession (This can be made within 8 days before or after the first Saturday). 2. Receive Holy Communion (Regarding the difficulty that some could meet in fulfilling this requirement on Saturday, Our Lord told Sr. Lucy: “The practice of this devotion will be equally acceptable on the Sunday following the first

Saturday when my priests, for a just cause, allow the faithful”). 3. Pray 5 decades the Holy Rosary. 4. Keep Our Lady company for 15 minutes while meditating on the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary. This is to be done separately from the Rosary using one, several or all of the mysteries. 5. The above 4 requirements must all be done with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Thus our purpose is to console and compassionate the Immaculate Heart for the offenses she receives by those who ungratefully reject her maternal intervention and despise her prerogatives.

The Promises 1. The Virgin Mary's assistance at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation. 2. Establishing devotion to the Immaculate Heart will result in the salvation of souls and peace.

Why Five Saturdays? First of all, Saturday has traditionally been set aside as a day to honor Mary. For, on the first Holy Saturday — between the day of Jesus’ Crucifixion and that of his Resurrection — she alone remained steadfast in her Faith that Jesus would rise again as He said. Beyond this, Sr. Lucy relates the reason for five: When I was in the chapel with Our Lord part of the night of May 29-30, 1930, and I spoke to Our Lord about this question, I suddenly felt myself more intimately possessed by the Divine Presence and, if I am not mistaken, this is what was revealed to me: “My daughter, the reason is simple. There are five types of

offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: (1) Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception. (2) Blasphemies against her virginity. (3) Blasphemies against her divine maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize her as the Mother of men. (4) The blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference to, or scorn or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother. This devotion consists in attending Holy Mass and receiving Holy Communion in reparation for those who do not receive Our Lord, who do not love Him and who wound Him by their sinful lives.

"I promise you, in the excessive mercy of My Heart, that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who

communicate on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence; they shall not die

in my disgrace, nor without receiving their Sacraments, My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge

in this last moment." -Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary-

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials,

and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love,

renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee. I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my

life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the

hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I

fear all from my own weakness and malice, but

placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist

Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from

Thee. I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and

all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants. Amen.

A prayer to release many souls from Purgatory each time it is said and which was extended to include

living sinners as well.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT To be recited daily and during the Novena

On my knees I before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are

the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen.

HOLY SPIRIT NOVENA

FOREWORD: The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian.

PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

To be recited daily during the Novena

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this

world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit on Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord with the sign of Your true disciples, and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

The Novena begins on the day after the Solemnity of the Ascension, Friday of the 6th Week of Easter, even if the

Solemnity of the Ascension is transferred to the 7th Sunday.

FIRST DAY (Friday after Ascension or Friday of 6th Week of Easter) Holy Spirit! Lord of Light! From Your clear celestial height,

Your pure beaming radiance give! Your pure beaming radiance give!

6. PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

- 68 -

THE HOLY SPIRIT: Only one thing is important -- eternal salvation.

Only one thing, therefore, is to be feared--sin? Sin is the result of ignorance, weakness, and indifference The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Light, of Strength, and of Love. With His sevenfold gifts He enlightens the mind, strengthens the will, and inflames the heart with love of God. To ensure our salvation we ought to invoke the Divine Spirit daily, for "The Spirit helpeth our infirmity. We know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit Himself asketh for us."

PRAYER: Almighty and eternal God, Who hast vouchsafed to

regenerate us by water and the Holy Spirit, and hast given us forgiveness all sins, vouchsafe to send forth from heaven upon us your sevenfold Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and fortitude, the Spirit of Knowledge and Piety, and fill us with the Spirit of Holy Fear. Amen.

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 7 Glory be to the Father, the Act of Consecration and the Prayer for the Seven Gifts

SECOND DAY (Saturday of 6th Week of Easter)

Come. Father of the poor. Come, treasures which endure; Come, Light of all that live!

THE GIFT OF FEAR: The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for

God, and makes us dread nothing so much as to offend Him by sin. It is a fear that arises, not from the thought of hell, but from sentiments of reverence and filial submission to our heavenly Father. It is the fear that is the beginning of wisdom, detaching us from worldly pleasures that could in any way separate us from God. "They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and in His sight will sanctify their souls."

PRAYER: Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my

inmost heart, that I may set you, my Lord and God,

before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend You, and make me worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in heaven, where You live and reign in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God world without end. Amen.

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 7 Glory be to the Father, the Act of Consecration and the Prayer for the Seven Gifts

THIRD DAY (7th Sunday of Easter or transferred Ascension)

Thou, of all consolers best, Visiting the troubled breast, Dost refreshing peace bestow.

THE GIFT OF PIETY: The gift of Piety begets in our hearts a filial

affection for God as our most loving Father. It inspires us to love and respect for His sake persons and things consecrated to Him, as well as those who are vested with His authority, His Blessed Mother and the Saints, the Church and its visible Head, our parents and superiors, our country and its rulers. He who is filled with the gift of Piety finds the practice of his religion, not a burdensome duty, but a delightful service. Where there is love, there is no labor.

PRAYER: Come, O Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart.

Enkindle therein such a love for God, that I may find satisfaction only in His service, and for His sake lovingly submit to all legitimate authority. Amen.

FOURTH DAY (Monday, 7th Week of Easter)

Thou in toil art comfort sweet, Pleasant coolness in the heat, solace in the midst of woe.

THE GIFT OF FORTITUDE: By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened

against natural fear, and supported to the end in the performance of duty. Fortitude imparts to the will an impulse and energy which move it to under take without

hesitancy the most arduous tasks, to face dangers, to trample under foot human respect, and to endure without complaint the slow martyrdom of even lifelong tribulation. "He that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved."

PRAYER: Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude, uphold my soul

in time of trouble and adversity, sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give me courage against all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be overcome and separated from Thee, my God and greatest Good. Amen.

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 7 Glory be to the Father, the Act of Consecration and the Prayer for the Seven Gifts

FIFTH DAY (Tuesday, 7th Week of Easter)

Light immortal! Light Divine! Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill!

THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE: The gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate

created things at their true worth--in their relation to God. Knowledge unmasks the pretense of creatures, reveals their emptiness, and points out their only true purpose as instruments in the service of God. It shows us the loving care of God even in adversity, and directs us to glorify Him in every circumstance of life. Guided by its light, we put first things first, and prize the friendship of God beyond all else. "Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it."

PRAYER: Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant

that I may perceive the will of the Father; show me the nothingness of earthly things, that I may realize their vanity and use them only for Thy glory and my own salvation, looking ever beyond them to Thee, and Thy eternal rewards. Amen.

6. PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

- 71 -

SIXTH DAY (Wednesday, 7th Week of Easter) If Thou take Thy grace away, nothing pure in man will

stay, All his good is turn'd to ill. THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Spirit, helps us to grasp the meaning of the truths of our holy religion BY faith we know them, but by Understanding we learn to appreciate and relish them. It enables us to penetrate the inner meaning of revealed truths and through them to be quickened to newness of life. Our faith ceases to be sterile and inactive, but inspires a mode of life that bears eloquent testimony to the faith that is in us; we begin to "walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and increasing in the knowledge of God."

PRAYER: Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our

minds, that we may know and believe all the mysteries of salvation; and may merit at last to see the eternal light in Thy Light; and in the light of glory to have a clear vision of Thee and the Father and the Son. Amen.

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 7 Glory be to the Father, the Act of Consecration and the Prayer for the Seven Gifts

SEVENTH DAY (Thursday, 7th Week of Easter)

Heal our wounds--our strength renews; On our dryness pour Thy dew, Wash the stains of guilt away.

THE GIFT OF COUNSEL: The gift of Counsel endows the soul with

supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge promptly and rightly what must done, especially in difficult circumstances. Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and Understanding to the innumerable concrete cases that confront us in the course of our daily duty as parents, teachers, public servants, and Christian citizens. Counsel is supernatural common sense, a priceless treasure in the quest of salvation. "Above all these things, pray to the Most High, that He may direct thy way in truth."

6. PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

- 72 -

PRAYER: Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all

my ways, that I may always do Thy holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good; turn it away from all that is evil, and direct me by the straight path of Thy commandments to that goal of eternal life for which I long.

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 7 Glory be to the Father, the Act of Consecration and the Prayer for the Seven Gifts

EIGHTH DAY (Friday, 7th Week of Easter) Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen warm

the chill. Guide the steps that go astray! THE GIFT OF WISDOM:

Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of wisdom it is written "all good things came to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands." It is the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour: "Take up thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

PRAYER: Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul

the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them for 1

NINTH DAY (Saturday, Vigil of Pentecost) Thou, on those who evermore Thee confess and Thee

Adore, in Thy sevenfold gift, Descend; Give Them Comfort when they die; Give them Life with Thee on high; Give them

joys which never end. Amen THE FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

The gifts of the Holy Spirit perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us to practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Spirit, our service becomes more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Spirit. These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts in the service of God, to serve Whom is to reign.

PRAYER: Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Thy

heavenly fruits, Thy charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness, and temperance, that I may never weary in the service of God, but by continued faithful submission to Thy inspiration may merit to be united eternally with Thee in the love of the Father and the Son. Amen.

(VENI, CREATOR SPIRITUS)

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast

made. O comforter, to Thee we cry, O heavenly gift of God Most

God's hand we own; Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue

with power imbue. Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts o'erflow

Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the

path of life aside.

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH By Pope Leon XIII

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation, and having implored the help of your most holy spouse,

we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the

Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with

your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family, defend the

chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and

corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our

struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now

protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example

and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die holily, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.
