Hello and Welcome to the May 2010 issue of EN Magazine.

Well we have started to see some sunny days and many of us will be dragging out last year’s shorts and t-shirts. However what should we be seen wearing this summer? EN Magazine takes a look at this season’s fashion trends and colours.

Once you have got the right look you may want to show it off. If you like music what better place to be seen than at one of the many music festivals that take place over the summer? In association with Visit Britain we bring you our guide to the top ten summer music festivals.

For those of you who just want to stay at home and perhaps sit in the garden we bring you our tips for getting the most out of your garden.

With the economy high on the agenda for many people whatever their age we investigate with the help of local specialist how to plan for the future and how to survive if things go wrong.

The Enfield in Bloom Annual Garden

competition was launched on Wednesday 21st April Enfield at the Millfields Theatre. Now in its 28th year the competition has not only generated winners in the Enfield area but last year won 10 awards in the London in Bloom competition.

Enfield in Bloom encourages participation from local people to help improve our environment by volunteering for the Adopt a Flower Bed Scheme (which encourages sponsorship of raised beds/planters throughout the borough) Seasonal Bulb Planting, Wildflower planting, and

Development of our Allotment site. At present they have a mobile group of four committed volunteers who work on various projects across the borough twice a week, and upwards of twenty volunteers who regularly maintain flowerbeds and planters.

Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Eleftherios Savva said “The work of Enfield in Bloom encourages people in the local community who may by going through difficult times to get involved, giving them an aim through gardening and a pride in their achievements.”

Mo Cross one of the Enfield in Bloom volunteers told EN Magazine, “I enjoy living and working in a clean and colourful environment and volunteering for Enfield in Bloom I help to create this for everyone.”

Nightingale Community Hospice Trust?

They are looking for volunteers to help in their first charity shop.

On Saturday, 22nd May at 10am the Nightingale with the support of Stavros Flatley from Britain’s Got Talent will open the doors of 188 Baker Street, EN1.

Since the charity’s formation in 2002, staff, volunteers and trustees have worked tirelessly to provide support to Enfield residents affected by cancer.

“ Over the years we have helped 100’s of individuals and their families by providing advice, support and relief at a time when it’s most needed. All our services are delivered at no cost to the clients and all profits from this shop will

be used to continue our work.” said Joan Kearns, Services & Development Director.

The shop will sell a variety of goods ranging from high class clothing, good quality bric-a-brac and books to stylish accessories. There will always be bargain to be found and all you can know that the money you spend will be put to good use helping local people.

Volunteers urgently needed

This year there are nineteen categories sponsored by local businesses or environmental groups who are committed to supporting efforts to improve the environment. The variety of categories allows everyone to enter from Front Gardens to Best Residential street, Communal Gardens and Best Environmental and Wildlife Garden. There are also categories for Business Premises Frontage, Public Houses, Public Buildings and Best School Grounds.

The competition is free and the majority of entrants are amateur gardeners who have a keen interest in gardening and a desire to

brighten up our day with their beautiful flowers. Entrants that are awarded ‘Gold’ within their category may progress to represent the borough in the London in Bloom competition.

The judging for this year year’s competition will be between 14th to 25th June. Areas of Potters Bar will be cleaned up

following an operation by Hertsmere Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Council, fire and police

officers joined forces at an Environmental Action Day (EAD) on Wednesday, 14th April, and a Spotlight event on the following Friday.

The aim of an EAD is for relevant organisations to identify environmental issues such as graffiti and flytipping by walking around a particular area. Spotlight events, which involve the same organisations setting up a mobile police station in the area, take place soon after an EAD to give a visible presence in the community so that residents can talk to officers face-to-face about any concerns they have.

During the EAD, graffiti was identified in Mutton Lane, Hunters Close and Willow Way. Flytipping was also found in Mutton Lane as well as Dove Lane and Hayes Avenue. In addition, a number of shopping trollies were found along the way which Tesco has agreed to collect.

Valerie Kane, Community Safety Officer at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “The Environmental Action Day

was organised so relevant officers from the CDRP could see firsthand what needs to be addressed in the community. The issues we found have been reported to the responsible organisation to deal with.

“Around 50 local people came to the Spotlight event in Oakmere Park car park and received advice and information on community safety and crime prevention. They also gave their views on what the police should concentrate on in Potters Bar. A number of children came along too who were given a tour of a fire engine.”

Local businesswomen Julia Sondack

(Drapemasters Interior Furnishers) Rosy Holt (Athena Network) and Sue Calabrese (Phoenix Card Trader), Theresa Bowman (Cherry Lodge Cancer Care), Deanne Gold along with Gina and Jeremy Silverstone are heading to Tanzania as part of a team working with Childreach International in September. The team will be going to the Mawanda Primary

School in the Rombo district, Kilimanjaro region to help over 200 schoolchildren.

“Our mission,” said Julia “ is to improve the learning environment by renovating three classrooms, constructing 14 toilet holes and constructing a safe clean kitchen by the end of 2010. Many of the children attending the school complain of respiratory problems caused by inhaling

dust. As these photos show the classroom floor is dirt and there are no windows, lighting etc. As for the kitchen this word only loosely describes it – yes if the floor is an ideal cooking area! I am only glad I have not received an image of what the current toilet facilities are - I guess I’ll have that moment to look forward to when we go out there. This could truly be Drapemasters’ most challenging interior design job yet!”

The volunteers need to raise £2,200 each to help with funding for the project, and are putting on a range of local fundraising events including: 9th May – Funky Casino Night straight from Las Vegas to Winchmore Hill at the Willow

Giving a School a Makeover

The 33rd Enfield Pageant of Motoring will take

place over the late Spring Bank Holiday Weekend of 29th, 30th & 31st May and will be held at The Playing Fields, Great Cambridge Road, EN1 3PL.

More than 2000 classic vehicles will be attending the Pageant bringing together an impressive and exciting show of cars, motorcycles and steam engines. These will include some pre-1930 veteran cars. There will also be displays from over 60 car clubs featuring classics such as Jaguar, MG, Ford and Triumph. With over 400 autojumble and collectables stalls the Enfield Pageant of Motoring will once again be one of the biggest and best events in the UK.

The theme of this year’s show is ‘The Quest for Speed’ which will be a celebration of man’s endeavour to achieve the maximum

from his machines. In the main marquee will be the BloodHound Supersonic 1000pmh car – come and meet the team behind this exciting project. Also on display in the marquee with a full support team will be the Angelic Bulldog a 400mph land speed record breaking motorbike. The Angelic Bulldog will be attempting the world land speed record later this summer at Bonneville Flats in America. A rare treat will be a visit by the ‘Blower Bentley’ which is on loan from Beaulieu – a car not too be missed.

Displays of drag racing cars and motorcycles from the North Weald Drag Strip can be found adjacent to the ‘Quest for Speed’ marquee together with bikes from the 1960’s onwards from the National Speedway Museum which is based locally at the Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne.

New to North London is Little Legs for

Life - a kids’ version of the Cancer Research UK Race for Life. Many young lives are touched by cancer, and so at 2pm on Sunday May 23rd 2010, 200 children aged from birth to 11 years will run, jog, walk, toddle or even ride in a buggy or baby sling around the playing fields of Broomfield Park, Palmers Green to raise money for this fantastic charity. The Mayor of Enfield will start the race, and a picnic and play time will follow. The entry fee is £3, pre-registration is essential, and spaces are limited.

Once registered, entrants will receive a race pack with a sponsor form to raise as much money as possible. All participants will receive a medal, certificate and goody bag. Children will set their own distance target.

More than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found.

Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, and, surprisingly, is almost entirely funded by the public. An archery club will be set up for Potters

Bar Girl Guiding Association thanks to the latest monies from Hertsmere’s Ward Improvement Initiative Scheme (WIIS).

Cllr Eddie Roach, Potters Bar Parkfield, has allocated £1,502.38 to pay for bows, arrows, targets and associated equipment which will enable the club to be set up. Girl Guides, Brownies and Sunbeams in the area will all benefit.

Cllr Roach explained: “This is a new idea and I am delighted to support it. Hopefully the benefits will be two-fold - it is something a little bit different for the current members and will teach new skills, but I hope it will also attract new members.

I hope they will get many hours of enjoyment out of it for years to come.”

Elsewhere in the area, Cllr Tugay Sevincli, Potters Bar Oakmere, has donated £200 towards new signs and balls for the Potters Bar Petanque Club and £288 towards tablecloths for the 60+ club at Wyllyotts, Potters Bar.

Local people can make a bid for cash to improve the area they live in by using WIIS, which allows each Hertsmere councillor to spend £2,000 to support local projects and schemes.

Archery and Petanque clubs on target If you have a garden but

don not have a compost bin why don’t you give it a grow! This year, Compost Awareness Week will take place between 2-8 May 2010.

To celebrate national Compost Week Hertsmere Borough Council is offering residents free compost.

Ten tonnes of organic compost will be placed in Newberries Car Park in Radlett, near the recycling banks, on Wednesday, 5 May, from 10am to 3pm. Please bring a bag to collect your compost; it will be given on a first come, first served basis and limited to two bags per household. Information leaflets and seeds will also be available. The compost is being supplied by West London Composting.

In your home, the room that you spend the

most time in but often do not realise is your bedrooms. Admittedly the majority of this time may be whilst you are asleep but it is the first room that you see when you wake up, so having a nice, comfortable and practical room to wake up in, can help to start your day off right.

Superman or supermum? Who

would you choose as your hero? Children and adults are celebrating their favourite heroes as part of Children’s Hospice Week, the biggest awareness and fundraising week for UK children’s hospice services.

Children’s Hospice Week (15-22 May) is a fun and interactive charity campaign, set to raise the profile of and funds for children’s hospices. There are 44 children’s hospices across the UK, which provide care and support for children and young people

with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Children’s Hospices UK is the national charity that gives voice and support to all children’s hospice services. They help children’s hospices to continually enhance the care and support they provide to children who are not expected to reach adulthood and their families. They raise awareness of the range of services provided by children’s hospices and fundraise to help them to continue to provide their services for free. Also they campaign and lobby on behalf of children’s

hospices, ensuring their voice is heard by government.

Children’s Hospice Week aims to raise awareness of the unique services available to children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. It’s also about raising vital funds for the children’s hospice services all of whom are registered charities. With a HEROES theme, children’s hospices across the UK will be joining forces with celebrities, schools and local supporters to organise a variety of events including gala fundraising balls, competitions, open days and other activities during the week. In the EN area Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice will be launching Children’s Hospice Week in style on Saturday 15th May with a prestigious Casino Night on board HMS President, in London.

Children’s Hospices UK will be also be hosting an exciting art exhibition at The Gallery, Cork Street, London, called This is my hero (17-22 May). This event will display and auction artworks created by children who are not expected to reach

adulthood, as well as hero masks exclusively designed by celebrities including Holly Willoughby, Jo Brand, Lily Allen and Fern Britton. Two children who benefit from Noah’s Ark support have created exhibits. The gallery of artworks is available to see on www.this ismyhero.org.uk

To bring the week to a close Noah’s Ark will be holding a Skydive in Bicester on Saturday 22 and will be attending ‘Hospices in Harmony’ music event on Sunday 23. This event is being organised by The Rotary Club of Enfield, and will raise much needed funds for Noah’s Ark, The North London Hospice and The Nightingale Community Hospice.

Simon Cowell, celebrity Patron of Children’s Hospices UK is a big supporter of the week, he says: “Please do whatever you can to support Children’s Hospice Week because every single person makes a real difference”.

The Sunday Times recognised Metaswitch for its innovative culture and excellence in providing a supportive work environment.

The MetaSphere application server is an innovative platform for “21st Century” broadband-enabled telephony services. Common MetaSphere applications include replacement of traditional end office telephone switches, business Voice over IP (hosted PBX), advanced voicemail (unified messaging), Web-enabled communications and wireline/mobile integration.

Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership

(CSP) is the new name for the borough’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP).

The partnership still comprises Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and other organisations and will continue to work to keep Hertsmere a safe place to live.

When partnerships between local councils, police and other organisations were first officially launched under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, individual partnerships could choose to be called a CDRP or a CSP. However, new guidance from the Home Office encourages the use of the term CSP.

Valerie Kane, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Community Safety Officer, explained: “The term CSP is more widely used in Hertfordshire so it makes sense for us to use it too for consistency across the county.

“Crime is relatively low in Hertsmere and overall it is steadily falling and we will continue to work in partnership to keep the borough a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Last year the partnership initiated and got involved with a number of projects including:

* Dog Watch and Off Watch schemes, which are similar to Neighbourhood Watch, and a Horse Watch is due to be launched in May

* working with pupils to discourage drivers from speeding

outside schools* Environmental Action

Days, Spotlight events and visual audits which tackle environmental crimes such as graffiti and flytipping

* community payback whereby local offenders carry out tasks to improve the local area such as litter picking and removing flytips

* PL8 SAF3 events which resulted in 400 vehicles being fitted with theft-resistant number plate screws.

Hertsmere’s Crime Reduction Groups (CRGs) will also be renamed Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs). These groups are open to any local resident or interested party. Public meetings take place four times a year in each local area and topics include anti-social behaviour, local crime figures, fire safety and issues of local concern. Each group is allocated £1,000 a year to spend on projects that reduce crime and improve community safety in that area.

Valerie Kane added: “Local

CSPs are an opportunity for people to get involved and make a difference in their local area so please come along, we welcome your views and support.”

From rock bands to rap artists, individual musicians to singers everyone that wants to make it in the music industry needs to find somewhere to practice. This can often cause problems with family or neighbours having to listen over and over to you practicing. However there is now a local solution for musicians, disgruntled family and neighbours, Music Shack Rehearsal and Teaching

Studios.

Based in Enfield these purpose built practice studios are the idea of Steve Besemer and his partner Lisa Molloy,

Steve who has 26 years experience as a professional drummer and drum teacher is probably best know locally for his performances with covers bands “Banned From The Moon.” and “Roundabout Zoo” and tours at music festivals with “Smashing Time”. Steve has also worked with some big names in the music industry including Bruce Foxton previously of

The Jam, Dennis Greeves (Nine Below Zero & The Truth).

“From my work teaching at local schools and music schools I realised there is an abundance of musical talent and enthusiasm in the area that was being stifled from the lack of teaching, rehearsal facilities and encouragement.” Steve told EN Magazine. “With the help, guidance and advice from Liz Gjoni of Enterprise Enfield, we were able to put together a business plan. Liz was able to introduce us to John Reynolds of Credit Union who helped us raise additional extra investment to open up Music Shack.”

Music Shack will be open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Initially there will be two soundproof rehearsal studios and a music teaching room available for hire. Plans

are already in place for the completion of two additional soundproof studios and three practice rooms. The rehearsal studios are available for hire from £10.00 per hour with a vocal pa system and a drum kit should you need one and additional amplifiers are also available to hire. Steve already

offers teaching to people interested in learning to play the drums, with a free twenty minute assessment for new beginners and lessons from £15.00 for half hour. Steve said “We have had a lot of interest from other music teachers for all kinds of instruments who have asked about hiring the rooms.”

“As well as the rehearsal and practice rooms we are also planning a chill out area where band members and musicians can relax and socialise with like minded enthusiasts. We want to make Music Shack a welcoming and safe place for people of all ages and musical abilities to come and hang out and hopefully to help launch the next big thing in music” added Lisa.

chance to get some new clothes!

As we enter spring and look forward to summer, its time to pack away those winter warmers and sort through your wardrobe on the hunt for items that fall into this seasons trends.

The UK population is living longer, and the strain on both the

government and individual’s investments and financial plans for the future are being stretched. It is not only the financial situation that causes concern for many people but the additional burdens on the National Health Service and Social Services in looking after the elderly.

Many people reaching retirement age are finding that the state pensions, personnel pensions and investments they have worked for are not delivering the returns they were hoping for in their retirement. So what steps can you take to plan for the future, to make sure that you are able to earn and what can you do if things go wrong.

The first thing is planning for the future a rough guide is that you need to have an pension pot that is 20 times what you are hoping your annul income will be. So for example if you would like an annual income of £20,000 a year in retirement you would need a pension pot of around £400,000.

EN Magazine spoke to Independent Financial Adviser Noel Sainsbury of Archers Financial Services. Noel has over 20 years experience and has advised thousands of local residents since setting up in Enfield in 1991.

“This recession has effected a far greater cross section of the community than that of 1991 it is not only home owners who have struggled to repay their mortgages because of reduced working hours or redundancy but elderly

pensioners who worked for years to create nest eggs to see them through their twilight years are struggling on the meagre interest they are receiving from their savings.”

Unfortunately no matter what plans we make, things can sometimes go wrong and people of all ages and financial positions can often find themselves having to turn to social services or support agencies to fill the gap in their care requirements.

The traditional systems of social services, social care and NHS support that people have traditional relied on in old age and when unable to work have been going through dramatic changes. The old system of putting people that cannot cope into care homes or hospital has been revitalized. Under new government initiatives, the system now plans to give people the responsibility for their own care, allowing them to keep their independence and where possible stay in their own home.

EN Magazine spoke to Andrew Bone of New Directions Care and support Services, a local Enfield company that is helping people to take both care and financial responsibility for themselves.

“Many people who have difficulty coping with every day activities of daily living due to disabilities or significant physical or mental frailty used to have no option but to go into hospital or a care

home. However with changes in support available in the community it is the majority who are able to stay at home and indeed regain some level of their independence and control over their life. An example of this would be an older person who could not walk or transfer from a chair or bed and who may have a level of confusion Under the old system they would have been placed into full time care that is extremely expensive and takes away their independence. Under the new system known as “personalization” rather than be taken into care the local social services assess the persons needs and will then give the person or a representative a budget to employ an organization like New Directions to send round fully trained and vetted careers to help clients to maintain an independent lifestyle.”

“New Directions help people with every aspect of their lives from daily visits to support 24 hours a day. . One of our clients who is confined to a wheelchair used to live in a residential home and suffered from depression. With our help he now lives in his own home in Enfield and although he still has full time care he is able to get out and about, in fact last year we were able to take him on a cruise around the Mediterranean. This client is now leading a more active life and is back in control of his life.”

I’m writing this in mid-April, after a busy week both in the gardens at

Capel Manor and on my allotment. Some warm days have really go the plants moving: we’ve got amazing displays of daffodils and tulips, and the cherry blossom and camellias by the ruined temple at Capel Manor are looking superb. It is important to remove the dead flowers from your daffodils and tulips once they have finished flowering so that the plants’ energy goes back into building up the bulbs for next year’s flowers rather than producing seeds. Leave the foliage to die down naturally for at least 6 weeks after flowering to build the bulbs up.

Our sweet pea plants will be planted out this week on their wig-wams in Capel’s Walled Garden, as they are hardy plants. They should make a stunning display in a wide range of colours. People often recommend sowing sweet pea seeds in autumn and overwintering them in cold frames: we have tried both autumn and spring sowings this year and the spring batch look a lot healthier and will soon overtake the autumn-sown

seedlings. We’ll be sticking with spring sowings in the future as they are less trouble to look after!

Hardy annuals can be direct-sown now that the soil has warmed up sufficiently for the seeds to germinate. It is important to ensure that the flower bed or container you use is free from weeds. A good technique, which works just as well for a vegetable bed on an allotment, is the Stale Seed Bed. Remove any large weeds, rake the soil level and water well. Ideally cover the area with horticultural fleece to increase the temperature and make the weed seeds germinate. After a week you can either hoe the weeds off or preferably use a weedkiller such as Roundup or a fast-acting one such as Weedol. If you repeat the process the bed should stay clear of weeds for the summer so long as you don’t start digging it over and bringing more seeds to the surface to germinate.

Mark the edges of the areas you want to sow into with sand, and broadcast the seed over the soil, lightly raking it over to cover the seeds. Water if the soil is dry. Some of the hardy annuals we are direct-sowing in the Walled Garden at Capel include Ageratum, Cosmos, Larkspur,

Lupins and Nigella.

On to some jobs to do in your garden over the next couple of months. Don’t forget to keep a look-out for pests and diseases in your garden: despite the cold winter there seems to have been little reduction in pest numbers or types, so that’s another myth dispelled. Probably the most damage has been done to useful

predators such as insectivorous birds (eg wrens) which couldn’t find food when the snow covered the ground. We have already seen Rosemary Beetle, Aphids,

and Vine Weevil grubs in pots that were frozen solid for many weeks. Slugs and snails are active and especially enjoy hostas and tender seedlings (it’s funny how they never seem to like weed seedlings, isn’t it?). We’ve had good results using the new wildlife-friendly slug pellets.

There is still time to feed your lawn with a spring top-dressing to get it to green up, and any bare patches can be either repaired with turf or sown with grass seed. Remember to keep new turf or grass seed watered until it has settled in. We’re cutting the lawns at Capel weekly now, and have re-edged the lawn areas to true them up. Over the years the edges can wander from off from straight and using taught garden line in conjunction with an edging iron and board will really smarten a garden up. Lawn weeds can be controlled using a selective herbicide available from garden centres: do follow the instructions carefully though or you can damage the grass as well as the weeds. An alternative is to remove them using a daisy grubber or hand trowel.

but watch their sap as it is an irritant. Strawberries can be planted out in their beds: use cloches to give an early crop. Watch out for aphids on fruit (they can transmit diseases to the plant) and sawfly grubs on gooseberries as they can quickly defoliate a bush. Either pick the grubs off or use an insecticide such as pyrethrum.

It’s also time to start sowing crops such as beetroot, carrots, leeks and parsnips directly in the ground, although if you have a severe problem with slugs

then beetroot can be started in trays and transplanted as small seedlings, and leeks can be started in pots or a seed bed ready for transplanting when they are pencil thickness. Cabbages and other brassicas are best started in cells then transplanted to avoid pest damage. When you plant them out you will need to cover them with netting if there are pigeons in your area, as they will leave you with just the stalks otherwise. Leaf beet or swiss chard is well worth growing and seems to be pest-free.

If you planted potatoes (and there is still time to do this – they will just crop a little later) then the first shoots will soon emerge from the soil. Earth them up by gently drawing soil over the shoots to protect them from frost and increase your yield. Salad crops are often

expensive: they are worth growing in pots in the garden and last year I used the “cut and come again” system for lettuce. Once the lettuce plant reaches a reasonable size then you can either remove the outer leaves every couple of days, or just cut the plant off at an inch or so above soil level. It will grow back

several times over the summer, so 6 or more plants will keep you in lettuce over the summer.

Our new asparagus plants are growing well in the Walled Garden, and the rhubarb is looking good. I have been enjoying both from my allotment this weekend!
