Hello and Welcome to the May 2010 issue of EN Magazine.

Well we have started to see some sunny days and many of us will be dragging out last year’s shorts and t-shirts. However what should we be seen wearing this summer? EN Magazine takes a look at this season’s fashion trends and colours.

Once you have got the right look you may want to show it off. If you like music what better place to be seen than at one of the many music festivals that take place over the summer? In association with Visit Britain we bring you our guide to the top ten summer music festivals.

For those of you who just want to stay at home and perhaps sit in the garden we bring you our tips for getting the most out of your garden.

With the economy high on the agenda for many people whatever their age we investigate with the help of local specialist how to plan for the future and how to survive if things go wrong.

We hope that you enjoy reading this issue of EN Magazine.

The Enfield in Bloom Annual Garden

competition was launched on Wednesday 21st April Enfield at the Millfields Theatre. Now in its 28th year the competition has not only generated winners in the Enfield area but last year won 10 awards in the London in Bloom competition.

Enfield in Bloom encourages participation from local people to help improve our environment by volunteering for the Adopt a Flower Bed Scheme (which encourages sponsorship of raised beds/planters throughout the borough) Seasonal Bulb Planting, Wildflower planting, and

Development of our Allotment site. At present they have a mobile group of four committed volunteers who work on various projects across the borough twice a week, and upwards of twenty volunteers who regularly maintain flowerbeds and planters.

Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Eleftherios Savva said “The work of Enfield in Bloom encourages people in the local community who may by going through difficult times to get involved, giving them an aim through gardening and a pride in their achievements.”

Mo Cross one of the Enfield in Bloom volunteers told EN Magazine, “I enjoy living and working in a clean and colourful environment and volunteering for Enfield in Bloom I help to create this for everyone.”

Can you spare some time to support the

Nightingale Community Hospice Trust?

They are looking for volunteers to help in their first charity shop.

On Saturday, 22nd May at 10am the Nightingale with the support of Stavros Flatley from Britain’s Got Talent will open the doors of 188 Baker Street, EN1.

Since the charity’s formation in 2002, staff, volunteers and trustees have worked tirelessly to provide support to Enfield residents affected by cancer.

“ Over the years we have helped 100’s of individuals and their families by providing advice, support and relief at a time when it’s most needed. All our services are delivered at no cost to the clients and all profits from this shop will

be used to continue our work.” said Joan Kearns, Services & Development Director.

The shop will sell a variety of goods ranging from high class clothing, good quality bric-a-brac and books to stylish accessories. There will always be bargain to be found and all you can know that the money you spend will be put to good use helping local people.

If you enjoy meeting new people and working in a team why not sign up as a volunteer. If you cannot give your time perhaps you could donate your unwanted goods.

For further information please call Barbara on 0208 363 4975. Or email [email protected]

Areas of Potters Bar will be cleaned up

following an operation by Hertsmere Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Council, fire and police

officers joined forces at an Environmental Action Day (EAD) on Wednesday, 14th April, and a Spotlight event on the following Friday.

The aim of an EAD is for relevant organisations to identify environmental issues such as graffiti and flytipping by walking around a particular area. Spotlight events, which involve the same organisations setting up a mobile police station in the area, take place soon after an EAD to give a visible presence in the community so that residents can talk to officers face-to-face about any concerns they have.

During the EAD, graffiti was identified in Mutton Lane, Hunters Close and Willow Way. Flytipping was also found in Mutton Lane as well as Dove Lane and Hayes Avenue. In addition, a number of shopping trollies were found along the way which Tesco has agreed to collect.

Valerie Kane, Community Safety Officer at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “The Environmental Action Day

was organised so relevant officers from the CDRP could see firsthand what needs to be addressed in the community. The issues we found have been reported to the responsible organisation to deal with.

“Around 50 local people came to the Spotlight event in Oakmere Park car park and received advice and information on community safety and crime prevention. They also gave their views on what the police should concentrate on in Potters Bar. A number of children came along too who were given a tour of a fire engine.”

If you have any community safety concerns please contact Hertsmere Borough Council on 020 8207 7801, email [email protected] or why not go along to the next Potters Bar Crime Reduction Group meeting which takes place on 20 May at 7pm at The Wyllyotts Centre, Drakes Lane. Meetings take place four times a year and are open to all residents and businesses in the town.

Local businesswomen Julia Sondack

(Drapemasters Interior Furnishers) Rosy Holt (Athena Network) and Sue Calabrese (Phoenix Card Trader), Theresa Bowman (Cherry Lodge Cancer Care), Deanne Gold along with Gina and Jeremy Silverstone are heading to Tanzania as part of a team working with Childreach International in September. The team will be going to the Mawanda Primary

School in the Rombo district, Kilimanjaro region to help over 200 schoolchildren.

“Our mission,” said Julia “ is to improve the learning environment by renovating three classrooms, constructing 14 toilet holes and constructing a safe clean kitchen by the end of 2010. Many of the children attending the school complain of respiratory problems caused by inhaling

dust. As these photos show the classroom floor is dirt and there are no windows, lighting etc. As for the kitchen this word only loosely describes it – yes if the floor is an ideal cooking area! I am only glad I have not received an image of what the current toilet facilities are - I guess I’ll have that moment to look forward to when we go out there. This could truly be Drapemasters’ most challenging interior design job yet!”

The volunteers need to raise £2,200 each to help with funding for the project, and are putting on a range of local fundraising events including: 9th May – Funky Casino Night straight from Las Vegas to Winchmore Hill at the Willow

Restaurant Winchmore Hill Road from 7.30pm to 10.30 pm. Tickets £25; 23rd May – Family fun BBQ at Totteridge Cricket Club; 13th June – Tanzania Tea Party in a beautiful Enfield garden 9th July – Perfect Pamper Morning in Winchmore Hill.

If you would like to help or for further information on attending these events and helping the children at the Mawanda Primary School contact Julia on 07812 575325 or mail to; [email protected] or www.justgiving.com/Julia-Sondack

New to North London is Little Legs for

Life - a kids’ version of the Cancer Research UK Race for Life. Many young lives are touched by cancer, and so at 2pm on Sunday May 23rd 2010, 200 children aged from birth to 11 years will run, jog, walk, toddle or even ride in a buggy or baby sling around the playing fields of Broomfield Park, Palmers Green to raise money for this fantastic charity. The Mayor of Enfield will start the race, and a picnic and play time will follow. The entry fee is £3, pre-registration is essential, and spaces are limited.

Once registered, entrants will receive a race pack with a sponsor form to raise as much money as possible. All participants will receive a medal, certificate and goody bag. Children will set their own distance target.

More than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found.

Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, and, surprisingly, is almost entirely funded by the public. Without the generosity and dedication of supporters they would not be able to continue making the progress against cancer which has seen survival rates double in the last 30 years.

Many of the children are running in memory of a loved one. If you would like to join in, please visit http://supportus.cancerresearchuk.org/events, or if you have a question call Helen on 0771 7331191 or email [email protected]

An archery club will be set up for Potters

Bar Girl Guiding Association thanks to the latest monies from Hertsmere’s Ward Improvement Initiative Scheme (WIIS).

Cllr Eddie Roach, Potters Bar Parkfield, has allocated £1,502.38 to pay for bows, arrows, targets and associated equipment which will enable the club to be set up. Girl Guides, Brownies and Sunbeams in the area will all benefit.

Cllr Roach explained: “This is a new idea and I am delighted to support it. Hopefully the benefits will be two-fold - it is something a little bit different for the current members and will teach new skills, but I hope it will also attract new members.

I hope they will get many hours of enjoyment out of it for years to come.”

Elsewhere in the area, Cllr Tugay Sevincli, Potters Bar Oakmere, has donated £200 towards new signs and balls for the Potters Bar Petanque Club and £288 towards tablecloths for the 60+ club at Wyllyotts, Potters Bar.

Local people can make a bid for cash to improve the area they live in by using WIIS, which allows each Hertsmere councillor to spend £2,000 to support local projects and schemes.

If you would like to have a scheme considered, contact your local councillor. To find out who your local councillor is visit www.hertsmere.gov.uk

In your home, the room that you spend the

most time in but often do not realise is your bedrooms. Admittedly the majority of this time may be whilst you are asleep but it is the first room that you see when you wake up, so having a nice, comfortable and practical room to wake up in, can help to start your day off right.

Obviously having a comfortable bed is all-important, however the choice of bedroom furniture can make all the difference.

EN Magazine went along to speak to James Allen the proprietor of James Allen Bedrooms, who have showrooms in both Enfield Town and Crews Hill. They have been established for over 20 years, so when we wanted to find out what makes a ‘good’ bedroom we went to them for advice.

“When planning a bedroom you need to decide if you want stand alone furniture or a fitted bedroom; we can offer a large selection of both”

“If it is a fitted bedroom Sarah Jones or myself, always go out to meet the client to carry out a site visit and discuss what the

client is looking for. We then provide computer designs to show where everything will go. This is a free service that we offer. Through experience, Sarah and I have found that we can create designs that match the needs of our clients. We are usually able to point out solutions that will work. A recent example was with a gentleman who wanted shoe racks in his wardrobe but had not considered that his wife’s boots would not fit in the standard racks, something Sarah, with her broad experience, was able to point out and keep everyone happy!”

“Our fitted wardrobes come in a wide range of widths, depths and heights, so we can make sure we get the best possible fit in the room. They also come with an extensive range of internal options to suit the needs of the individual bedroom.”

“We have our own team of fitters who have been with us for over 10 years. Our support team of Glen, Jennifer, Hazel and Martin oversee all our jobs every step of the way. We want to make sure our clients are happy every step of the way from our non pushy sales

approach, our levels of service and the products we supply.”

“As well as fitted bedrooms, we have an extensive range of standalone wardrobes, chests and bedside tables to complete any bedroom but we do not stop there. We also have

furniture for every other room in the house, for example dining tables and chairs, sideboards and display units. The team at the Enfield store have an extensive knowledge of the furniture styles and various size options to be able

to find the table or unit you are looking for.”

“All of our additional furniture is made to top quality standards and is available in a selection of solid pine and oak in different finishes. I am so confident in the quality of

our furniture customers have even seen me pull out a draw from a unit and stand on it to show how well made they are.”

“As a small independent supplier we pride ourselves on not only the quality and range of products that we are

able to offer our customers but the service and customer care that we are able to provide. Many customers are surprised that this does not come at an extra cost. In fact we are able to offer a price guarantee that we will beat any genuine quote from furniture stores including Sharps, Hammonds, Rhino and Spacemaker.”

For further information visit James Allen Furniture at 4-6 Savoy Parade Southbury Road Enfield Town (next to Tesco) or at Phoenix Rose Garden Centre Crew Hill (opposite Springtime) or call 020 8366 9887 or 020 8363 3919.

Superman or supermum? Who

would you choose as your hero? Children and adults are celebrating their favourite heroes as part of Children’s Hospice Week, the biggest awareness and fundraising week for UK children’s hospice services.

Children’s Hospice Week (15-22 May) is a fun and interactive charity campaign, set to raise the profile of and funds for children’s hospices. There are 44 children’s hospices across the UK, which provide care and support for children and young people

with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Children’s Hospices UK is the national charity that gives voice and support to all children’s hospice services. They help children’s hospices to continually enhance the care and support they provide to children who are not expected to reach adulthood and their families. They raise awareness of the range of services provided by children’s hospices and fundraise to help them to continue to provide their services for free. Also they campaign and lobby on behalf of children’s

hospices, ensuring their voice is heard by government.

Children’s Hospice Week aims to raise awareness of the unique services available to children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. It’s also about raising vital funds for the children’s hospice services all of whom are registered charities. With a HEROES theme, children’s hospices across the UK will be joining forces with celebrities, schools and local supporters to organise a variety of events including gala fundraising balls, competitions, open days and other activities during the week. For events and activities taking place during the week visit www.childrenshospiceweek.org.uk

In the EN area Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice will be launching Children’s Hospice Week in style on Saturday 15th May with a prestigious Casino Night on board HMS President, in London.

Children’s Hospices UK will be also be hosting an exciting art exhibition at The Gallery, Cork Street, London, called This is my hero (17-22 May). This event will display and auction artworks created by children who are not expected to reach

adulthood, as well as hero masks exclusively designed by celebrities including Holly Willoughby, Jo Brand, Lily Allen and Fern Britton. Two children who benefit from Noah’s Ark support have created exhibits. The gallery of artworks is available to see on www.this ismyhero.org.uk

To bring the week to a close Noah’s Ark will be holding a Skydive in Bicester on Saturday 22 and will be attending ‘Hospices in Harmony’ music event on Sunday 23. This event is being organised by The Rotary Club of Enfield, and will raise much needed funds for Noah’s Ark, The North London Hospice and The Nightingale Community Hospice.

Simon Cowell, celebrity Patron of Children’s Hospices UK is a big supporter of the week, he says: “Please do whatever you can to support Children’s Hospice Week because every single person makes a real difference”.

Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership

(CSP) is the new name for the borough’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP).

The partnership still comprises Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and other organisations and will continue to work to keep Hertsmere a safe place to live.

When partnerships between local councils, police and other organisations were first officially launched under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, individual partnerships could choose to be called a CDRP or a CSP. However, new guidance from the Home Office encourages the use of the term CSP.

Valerie Kane, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Community Safety Officer, explained: “The term CSP is more widely used in Hertfordshire so it makes sense for us to use it too for consistency across the county.

“Crime is relatively low in Hertsmere and overall it is steadily falling and we will continue to work in partnership to keep the borough a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Last year the partnership initiated and got involved with a number of projects including:

* Dog Watch and Off Watch schemes, which are similar to Neighbourhood Watch, and a Horse Watch is due to be launched in May

* working with pupils to discourage drivers from speeding

outside schools* Environmental Action

Days, Spotlight events and visual audits which tackle environmental crimes such as graffiti and flytipping

* community payback whereby local offenders carry out tasks to improve the local area such as litter picking and removing flytips

* PL8 SAF3 events which resulted in 400 vehicles being fitted with theft-resistant number plate screws.

Hertsmere’s Crime Reduction Groups (CRGs) will also be renamed Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs). These groups are open to any local resident or interested party. Public meetings take place four times a year in each local area and topics include anti-social behaviour, local crime figures, fire safety and issues of local concern. Each group is allocated £1,000 a year to spend on projects that reduce crime and improve community safety in that area.

Valerie Kane added: “Local

CSPs are an opportunity for people to get involved and make a difference in their local area so please come along, we welcome your views and support.”

The CSP organises lots of events and projects throughout the year to help reduce crime and make people feel safer - to find out more contact Hertsmere Borough Council on 020 8207 7801 or email [email protected]

Are you hoping to be the next big thing in

the music industry? Do you want to be the next Cheryl Cole or Oasis perhaps?

From rock bands to rap artists, individual musicians to singers everyone that wants to make it in the music industry needs to find somewhere to practice. This can often cause problems with family or neighbours having to listen over and over to you practicing. However there is now a local solution for musicians, disgruntled family and neighbours, Music Shack Rehearsal and Teaching

Studios.

Based in Enfield these purpose built practice studios are the idea of Steve Besemer and his partner Lisa Molloy,

Steve who has 26 years experience as a professional drummer and drum teacher is probably best know locally for his performances with covers bands “Banned From The Moon.” and “Roundabout Zoo” and tours at music festivals with “Smashing Time”. Steve has also worked with some big names in the music industry including Bruce Foxton previously of

The Jam, Dennis Greeves (Nine Below Zero & The Truth).

“From my work teaching at local schools and music schools I realised there is an abundance of musical talent and enthusiasm in the area that was being stifled from the lack of teaching, rehearsal facilities and encouragement.” Steve told EN Magazine. “With the help, guidance and advice from Liz Gjoni of Enterprise Enfield, we were able to put together a business plan. Liz was able to introduce us to John Reynolds of Credit Union who helped us raise additional extra investment to open up Music Shack.”

Music Shack will be open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Initially there will be two soundproof rehearsal studios and a music teaching room available for hire. Plans

are already in place for the completion of two additional soundproof studios and three practice rooms. The rehearsal studios are available for hire from £10.00 per hour with a vocal pa system and a drum kit should you need one and additional amplifiers are also available to hire. Steve already

offers teaching to people interested in learning to play the drums, with a free twenty minute assessment for new beginners and lessons from £15.00 for half hour. Steve said “We have had a lot of interest from other music teachers for all kinds of instruments who have asked about hiring the rooms.”

“As well as the rehearsal and practice rooms we are also planning a chill out area where band members and musicians can relax and socialise with like minded enthusiasts. We want to make Music Shack a welcoming and safe place for people of all ages and musical abilities to come and hang out and hopefully to help launch the next big thing in music” added Lisa.

Shakespere said “If music be the food of love , play on.”

Well if music is your love then the idea of sitting in a field, often wading through mud is probably something that your looking forward to. With the summer festival season almost underway, it’s time to pack the tent, put on your denim shorts and wellies and MAKE SOME NOOOOISE!

In association with Visit Britain EN Magazine checks out this year’s top 10 music festivals in Britain - the home of the summer music festival.

Glastonbury FestivalWhen: 24th-28th June Where: Glastonbury, SomersetWhy: Glastonbury is the Mac Daddy of music festivals, the Big Cheese, Il Supremo, the Head Honcho… (sorry, we’ll stop now), but Glastonbury really is the big one. As well as an unbeatable line-up of acts including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Blur, Lily Allen and The Prodigy, there’s around 2,000 performances at 50 venues, including music, cabaret, theatre, circus, a fantastic

kids’ area, poetry, green crafts and lots more. Web: www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk

T in the ParkWhen: 10th-12th July Where: Near Kinross, ScotlandWhy: In true Scottish style, this is the summer festival that shows the rest of Britain how to have a good time - the nosiest, craziest, jumping-around-on-shoulders-wildest festival in the country. Now in its 15th year, T in the Park is Scotland’s major summer music festival. As well as the music from the likes of Razorlight, Pet Shop Boys, Lady GaGa The Killers, Blur and Bloc Party, there’s a fantastic fairground, delicious organic food and drink and numerous stalls and bars. Web: www.tinthepark.com

O2 Wireless FestivalWhen: 4th-5th July Where: Hyde Park LondonWhy: The O2 Wireless Festival is the coolest music festivals in London. Held over 2 days in London’s Hyde Park, it plays host to some of the best bands, artists and DJs around. This year’s Wireless has a rum-’n’-raisin flavour with

two distinct sounds over the 2 days. The likes of The Streets and Paul Oakenfold join the mighty Basement Jaxx to give the Saturday more of a dance vibe, while Kanye West, Flo Rida and Young Jeezy inject some fresh hip-hop beats into the Sunday. Web: www.wirelessfestival.co.uk

WakestockWhen: 10th-12th July Where: Pwllheli, Gwynedd, North Wales Why: Relentless Wakestock adds a completely new dimension to the rolling-around-in-mud-listening-to-bands formula we know and love. Wakestock adds wakeboarding into the mix to bring you a weekend of high-octane music and excitement. What started as a party in a car park after a wakeboard contest, has grown into one of the coolest music festivals in Europe playing host of top bands such as Moby, N*E*R*D and Dizzee Rascal, along with the biggest wakeboard competition in Europe. Web: www.wakestock.co.uk

The Eden SessionsWhen: July-August (various dates) Where: St Austell, CornwallWhy: Set inside the Eden Project, the world’s largest glass-domed ‘global garden’, Eden Sessions offer a festival experience like no other. You’ll get world class artists such as Paul Weller, The Kooks and Kasabian, in a venue dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World. Jarvis Cocker described Eden Sessions as “no mud, no pushy sponsors, no dodgy burgers, just lots of greenery”. Web: www.edenproject.com

The Big ChillWhen: 6th-9th August Where:Eastnor Deer Park, HerefordshireWhy: The Big Chill started life 15 years ago as a series of parties in London. Today it’s become one of the country’s most impressive summer festivals set in the sweeping backdrop of the Malvern Hills. Known for its striking visual displays and New Age character boasting on-site masseurs, alternative therapists and

healers (which you’ll probably need by the end of the festival), The Big Chill is an extraordinary place to both listen to top artists and, as the name suggests, ‘to chill’. Web: www.bigchill.net

V FestivalWhen: 22nd-23rd August Where: Chelmsford and StaffordshireWhy: The V festival attracts the big name acts from around the world such as Fatboy Slim, Oasis and Natalie Imbruglia, as well as acts that don’t usually do the summer festival circuit. The event happens across 2 jaw-dropping historic venues; Weston Park with its stunning 17th-century stately home and a 1000-acre parkland, and Hylands Park which boasts a neo-classical Grade 2* listed house set in 570 acres of parkland including ancient woods, pleasure gardens and a serpentine lake. How’s

that for music meets heritage?! Web: www.vfestival.com

Leeds and Reading FestivalWhen: 28th-30th August Where: Leeds, West Yorkshire / Reading BerkshireWhy: Leeds and Reading Festival is Britain’s leading rock, alternative and indie festival and believe it or not, one of the oldest music festivals in the world with a head-banging history going right back to 1961. Held simultaneously across 2 locations, the outstanding line-up dash frantically between venues so you get the same top-notch artists such as Radiohead, Kings of Leon and Kaiser Chiefs, no matter which of the 2 festivals you rock up to. Web: www.leedsfestival.com www.readingfestival.com

CreamfieldsWhen: 28th-30th August Where: Daresbury Nalton (nr Liverpool) Why: Creamfields has received endless accolades for getting the fields around Liverpool stomping to the beats of electro, house, garage, acid, minimal and every of type of dance music you can imagine. Stomp around this summer festival to the likes of Mylo, Laurent Garnier, Paul van Dyk and Sasha in the massive outdoor stage area or one of the 10 DJ-only areas. Creamfields has also had massive international success having staged the events in no less than 15 countries - although it’s home will always be our Liverpool! Web: www.creamfields.com

BestivalWhen: 9th-12thSeptember Where: Newport Isle of WightWhy: Bestival is more than just a festival, it’s a philosophy. And there’s no better way to see out the summer festival season than this award-winning 3-day boutique music festival set in a leafy country park in the heart of the Isle of Wight. The creative vision behind Bestival brings you not only an eclectic, world-class music, but also unusual experiences such as the Bollywood Cocktail Bar, fancy dress en mass and even a Hidden Disco. It’s this uniqueness that makes Bestival a wondrous world of discovery and a damn good end to summer! Web: www.bestival.net

Blue skies, white clouds, what springs to mind? For me its the

chance to get some new clothes!

As we enter spring and look forward to summer, its time to pack away those winter warmers and sort through your wardrobe on the hunt for items that fall into this seasons trends.

Pastels make a come back this summer with designers such as Louise Goldin, Burberry Prorsum and Nina Ricci as well as the high street have taken inspiration from the sugary sweet shades of mint green, baby blues, soft yellows, lilacs and pastel pinks, to indulge the stylish sweet tooth within you. Use floaty materials and chiffon to work this trend.

Prints appear all over the high street this summer, go flower power for a fool proofed spring/summer trend that will never die, visit www.carolondon.co.uk to see their new range which focuses on

creating new twists on floral and retro inspired prints, the beach cover ups are a favourite of mine. They look just as good over a pair of jeans as they look over a bikini for the beach. Or take inspiration from Africa and go tribal, with bright, primary and clashing colours in multiple and vivid prints. Look out for Zigzags and Batik designs which are key this season.

With denim always being a basic in most peoples wardrobes, this year fashionista’s such as Levi and True Religion have taken it one step further and made double denim one of this seasons biggest looks. Take your staple denims and update them using belts and buttons. Keep the denim dream alive, wearing dirty and distressed, patchwork or contrasting washes. Accessorize your denims with cotton basics. This trend is the most coveted and easily achievable look for this season; don’t be afraid to regenerate your own classics to create something individual.

Heavy metal which was worn to the extreme by Lady Gaga, is no longer for the man or the army, with it rising popularity shown in autumn/winter 2009 it was a

huge hit with the celebs so we are excited to see it continue into summer, trickling down to the mainstream; no longer are they confined to the red carpet, so break the barriers and add

them to jersey basics and loose knitted cardigans. Wear shimmering silver and gold as well as sequins and sparkling embellishment. Dress your modern metallic’s for a night out by teaming with this season’s most desirable shoe the clog or peep toe shoe boots.

Fed up with being constricted in your own clothes, well you’ll be happy to know that tailoring and structure are a thing of the past this season, with the sun out being sewn into your clothes can be uncomfortable, get that just come from the gym look with the sophisticated sportswear, with luxe fabrics and jersey. A stylish yet comfortable trend, so get down to your to nearest Tesco to pick up a pair of harem pants for as little as £10.00- this season staple trouser shape.

Its not all about your outerwear this season, your underwear must also look its best, as it will be shown under your garments. Think weightless fabrics with

layering, ruffles, draping and rouching to create an unashamedly feminine trend. Use silks, satins and lace to create this versatile look which can be worn during the day to work with a vest top underneath. Not sure about showing your undergarments, use layering to create the look you desire.

Visit New Look for a huge range of clothing to create this look.

Try updating your look with these seasons’ trend-proof key accessory items. Gladiator shoes are still a big love this summer. Start off any look with a pair of gladiator heels; wear these anywhere to lengthen your legs, and glam up any outfit. Not a lover of high heels? Try gladiator or cuff sandals, as worn by pop star Rihanna, visit www.deichman-shoes.co.uk to view their wide range of sandals and heels for this season. My personal favourite being their Catwalk and Graceland collections. Invest in a pair of ballet pumps, quilted, plain or patterned, to get an easy chic look for spring. With the sun out every girl needs a pair of sun glasses, this spring get a pair of oversized retro shades or aviators, which suit just about everyone and are never out of fashion. Get your hands on the official ‘it’ bag this season, the satchel, great for all occasions, if you choose a neutral colour it will go with everything. With this spring being relaxed why not use a belt to create a shape, use a tan plaited belt, as a simple essential.

Let’s not forget about the gents this Spring/Summer. With a mix of tailoring and dressed down clothing, for a more relaxed look.

Creating a rigid and trim silhouette was visible from the catwalks with defined shoulders and slim fit trousers; keep shirts and jackets crisp to add a professional and finished look, visit River Island for your silhouette essentials.

For the more relaxed look dark denim is the way to go, try teaming jeans with an armless buttoned gilet and a collarless basic jersey t-shirt.

This season’s colour palette comes from influences in safari and monochrome concepts make sure your wardrobe is full of greys, blacks, whites and earthy colours such as khaki think James Bond meets Indiana Jones.

Accessories can be a cheaper and easier way of updating any outfit so opt for roomy bags in all shapes and sizes and sportswear shoes, high tops in trainers are a huge hit, Office have a great selection of sports shoes available.

Spring is time for rebirth, renewal and regrowth, so let the fashionista in you grow with this season’s trends.

The UK population is living longer, and the strain on both the

government and individual’s investments and financial plans for the future are being stretched. It is not only the financial situation that causes concern for many people but the additional burdens on the National Health Service and Social Services in looking after the elderly.

Many people reaching retirement age are finding that the state pensions, personnel pensions and investments they have worked for are not delivering the returns they were hoping for in their retirement. So what steps can you take to plan for the future, to make sure that you are able to earn and what can you do if things go wrong.

The first thing is planning for the future a rough guide is that you need to have an pension pot that is 20 times what you are hoping your annul income will be. So for example if you would like an annual income of £20,000 a year in retirement you would need a pension pot of around £400,000.

EN Magazine spoke to Independent Financial Adviser Noel Sainsbury of Archers Financial Services. Noel has over 20 years experience and has advised thousands of local residents since setting up in Enfield in 1991.

“This recession has effected a far greater cross section of the community than that of 1991 it is not only home owners who have struggled to repay their mortgages because of reduced working hours or redundancy but elderly

pensioners who worked for years to create nest eggs to see them through their twilight years are struggling on the meagre interest they are receiving from their savings.”

“We have been approached by a number of elderly savers who historically sought no risk and fed off the interest from bank and building society accounts to supplement pensions, that are often meagre in size.

“Today with the base rate at 0.5% many savers are receiving virtually no interest on their savings. Archers were recently approached by an elderly client who was receiving 0.15% on her £50,000 deposited with the Abbey (50 + savings account with the Abbey, savings of £100,000 - £199,000 currently paying 0.15%!) After tax of 20% the client was receiving approximately £60 per annum in interest, which

was clearly not keeping pace with inflation.”

“Many of these clients are now spreading their savings across other asset classes such as ‘gilts and equities’. A typical cautious elderly investor is now investing as much as 25% of their savings in equities with a similar percentage in ‘gilts and corporate bonds.”

“Such a portfolio has allowed savers to enjoy some growth as well as taking an income. With interest rates set to remain low over the next couple of years we would recommend that investors consider such moves.”

The way to make sure that you are going to be able to meet the financial needs in your retirement is to earn as much as possible and where possible

make good investments that will give you the returns that your looking for. But what would you do if you suddenly found yourself or a loved one unable to work and in need of care. This is where Health Insurance and Critical Illness Cover can save you from further stress and financial hardship. We spoke to John Crisford of Sherwood Healthcare who arrange policies across the whole health insurance market to find out what cover you should look for and what it actually covers.

“Private Medical Insurance is designed to cover the costs of private medical treatment for short-term illnesses or injuries – commonly known as acute conditions. Most people buy this type of insurance to gain the reassurance of knowing that treatment is available promptly, should they become ill or injured. As a private patient you can usually choose where and when your treatment is to take place, the specialist who treats you and the hospital. You will

usually have a private room with en-suite facilities, complete with TV, telephone and the freedom to entertain your visitors at all reasonable times.”

“Apart from what the government tell us you could wait up to significant period for a non-urgent operation under the NHS Scheme and may think of going “private”. Under private schemes, you can be operated on within hours or days and have nursing care at home whilst you recuperate. Additionally, if you carry Income Protection and Private Medical Insurance, your income will be protected for up to a year, for a prolonged illness or medical condition that prevents you working. Critical Illness Insurance would cover you if permanently incapacitated.”

“Whichever plan you choose, it is likely that your premiums will rise above the rate of general inflation. This is because of factors that affect how healthcare is provided in all western economies, such as the costs of development of new medicines and treatments.” “The number and sophistication of treatments to improve quality of life is

increasing steadily. Most Private Medical Insurance policies aim to cover these treatments as they become established medical practice and available privately.” “Likewise, the sophistication and complexity of tests and scans used to diagnose illness and injury is also increasing. Such tests are becoming far more widely available in private hospitals – for example, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans that costs around £500 each.” “As people get older they are more likely to need and receive medical treatment, which means that Private Medical Insurance premiums will increase with age to reflect this. No matter what age you or your family are Private Healthcare Insurance can give you reassurance and peace of mind if you do have health problems. Although age and medical conditions will effect the insurance premiums don’t let that deter you. I have recently managed to arrange cover for clients in their 80’s who wanted the peace of mind to know they would get the care and treatment they needed as soon as possible.”

Unfortunately no matter what plans we make, things can sometimes go wrong and people of all ages and financial positions can often find themselves having to turn to social services or support agencies to fill the gap in their care requirements.

The traditional systems of social services, social care and NHS support that people have traditional relied on in old age and when unable to work have been going through dramatic changes. The old system of putting people that cannot cope into care homes or hospital has been revitalized. Under new government initiatives, the system now plans to give people the responsibility for their own care, allowing them to keep their independence and where possible stay in their own home.

EN Magazine spoke to Andrew Bone of New Directions Care and support Services, a local Enfield company that is helping people to take both care and financial responsibility for themselves.

“Many people who have difficulty coping with every day activities of daily living due to disabilities or significant physical or mental frailty used to have no option but to go into hospital or a care

home. However with changes in support available in the community it is the majority who are able to stay at home and indeed regain some level of their independence and control over their life. An example of this would be an older person who could not walk or transfer from a chair or bed and who may have a level of confusion Under the old system they would have been placed into full time care that is extremely expensive and takes away their independence. Under the new system known as “personalization” rather than be taken into care the local social services assess the persons needs and will then give the person or a representative a budget to employ an organization like New Directions to send round fully trained and vetted careers to help clients to maintain an independent lifestyle.”

“New Directions help people with every aspect of their lives from daily visits to support 24 hours a day. . One of our clients who is confined to a wheelchair used to live in a residential home and suffered from depression. With our help he now lives in his own home in Enfield and although he still has full time care he is able to get out and about, in fact last year we were able to take him on a cruise around the Mediterranean. This client is now leading a more active life and is back in control of his life.”

“But it is not only ongoing care that we are able to supply. Many of our clients use our services for just a short period of time. For example we can supply support services for someone who breaks a leg and suddenly finds they need help but cannot rely on family or friends. Or for someone that cares full

time for a member of the family we are able to offer respite support to give them a break for an hour a day or even a full week, knowing their loved one is being looked after by fully trained professionals.”

New Directions is a “3 Star Excellent” rated service awarded by the governments Care Quality Commission and has over 60 fully qualified and accredited staff available to offer part time or full time care.

I’m writing this in mid-April, after a busy week both in the gardens at

Capel Manor and on my allotment. Some warm days have really go the plants moving: we’ve got amazing displays of daffodils and tulips, and the cherry blossom and camellias by the ruined temple at Capel Manor are looking superb. It is important to remove the dead flowers from your daffodils and tulips once they have finished flowering so that the plants’ energy goes back into building up the bulbs for next year’s flowers rather than producing seeds. Leave the foliage to die down naturally for at least 6 weeks after flowering to build the bulbs up.

Our sweet pea plants will be planted out this week on their wig-wams in Capel’s Walled Garden, as they are hardy plants. They should make a stunning display in a wide range of colours. People often recommend sowing sweet pea seeds in autumn and overwintering them in cold frames: we have tried both autumn and spring sowings this year and the spring batch look a lot healthier and will soon overtake the autumn-sown

seedlings. We’ll be sticking with spring sowings in the future as they are less trouble to look after!

Hardy annuals can be direct-sown now that the soil has warmed up sufficiently for the seeds to germinate. It is important to ensure that the flower bed or container you use is free from weeds. A good technique, which works just as well for a vegetable bed on an allotment, is the Stale Seed Bed. Remove any large weeds, rake the soil level and water well. Ideally cover the area with horticultural fleece to increase the temperature and make the weed seeds germinate. After a week you can either hoe the weeds off or preferably use a weedkiller such as Roundup or a fast-acting one such as Weedol. If you repeat the process the bed should stay clear of weeds for the summer so long as you don’t start digging it over and bringing more seeds to the surface to germinate.

Mark the edges of the areas you want to sow into with sand, and broadcast the seed over the soil, lightly raking it over to cover the seeds. Water if the soil is dry. Some of the hardy annuals we are direct-sowing in the Walled Garden at Capel include Ageratum, Cosmos, Larkspur,

Lupins and Nigella.

On to some jobs to do in your garden over the next couple of months. Don’t forget to keep a look-out for pests and diseases in your garden: despite the cold winter there seems to have been little reduction in pest numbers or types, so that’s another myth dispelled. Probably the most damage has been done to useful

predators such as insectivorous birds (eg wrens) which couldn’t find food when the snow covered the ground. We have already seen Rosemary Beetle, Aphids,

and Vine Weevil grubs in pots that were frozen solid for many weeks. Slugs and snails are active and especially enjoy hostas and tender seedlings (it’s funny how they never seem to like weed seedlings, isn’t it?). We’ve had good results using the new wildlife-friendly slug pellets.

There is still time to feed your lawn with a spring top-dressing to get it to green up, and any bare patches can be either repaired with turf or sown with grass seed. Remember to keep new turf or grass seed watered until it has settled in. We’re cutting the lawns at Capel weekly now, and have re-edged the lawn areas to true them up. Over the years the edges can wander from off from straight and using taught garden line in conjunction with an edging iron and board will really smarten a garden up. Lawn weeds can be controlled using a selective herbicide available from garden centres: do follow the instructions carefully though or you can damage the grass as well as the weeds. An alternative is to remove them using a daisy grubber or hand trowel.

Onto the kitchen garden! Fig trees need pruning in April

but watch their sap as it is an irritant. Strawberries can be planted out in their beds: use cloches to give an early crop. Watch out for aphids on fruit (they can transmit diseases to the plant) and sawfly grubs on gooseberries as they can quickly defoliate a bush. Either pick the grubs off or use an insecticide such as pyrethrum.

It’s also time to start sowing crops such as beetroot, carrots, leeks and parsnips directly in the ground, although if you have a severe problem with slugs

What to do in your garden in early summer

Gardening

Page 27: EN Magazine May 2010

then beetroot can be started in trays and transplanted as small seedlings, and leeks can be started in pots or a seed bed ready for transplanting when they are pencil thickness. Cabbages and other brassicas are best started in cells then transplanted to avoid pest damage. When you plant them out you will need to cover them with netting if there are pigeons in your area, as they will leave you with just the stalks otherwise. Leaf beet or swiss chard is well worth growing and seems to be pest-free.

If you planted potatoes (and there is still time to do this – they will just crop a little later) then the first shoots will soon emerge from the soil. Earth them up by gently drawing soil over the shoots to protect them from frost and increase your yield. Salad crops are often

expensive: they are worth growing in pots in the garden and last year I used the “cut and come again” system for lettuce. Once the lettuce plant reaches a reasonable size then you can either remove the outer leaves every couple of days, or just cut the plant off at an inch or so above soil level. It will grow back

several times over the summer, so 6 or more plants will keep you in lettuce over the summer.

Our new asparagus plants are growing well in the Walled Garden, and the rhubarb is looking good. I have been enjoying both from my allotment this weekend!

Happy gardening!Mr Arthur Fallowfield
