Congratulations on embarking on the FitChoice™ programme.

FitChoice guides you to make intelligent choices that fit your own personal needs. We engage both your body and your brain in fitness and weight consciousness, so you can reset your habits and attitudes and make long-term, sustainable lifestyle changes.

This booklet is designed to highlight the basic information to get you started on the FitChoice programme and to help you set, and ultimately achieve your goals. There is so much more to FitChoice than simply a product range, but the products you have selected will play an important role in helping you to achieve those goals. Remember to stay in touch with the person who introduced you to FitChoice as they may also be able to provide advice and guidance.

The manufacturers of FitChoice (Neways International) have over 25 years of experience in product development and in developing FitChoice, have also consulted experts in the fields of exercise, nutrition and psychology. Your “Find Your Path” self-assessment helps identify a main eating type that fits you, which in turn determines which FitChoice Foundation Pack suits you best.

Although you may already have identified your eating type we recommend that you get acquainted with all three eating types and FitChoice Foundation Packs. After all, you might sometimes display characteristics from other eating types, especially as you change your habits and attitudes – and of course get results! Plus if you think you could help others find the FitChoice path, it’s important for you to understand the bigger picture.

You don’t have to a be an expert in nutrition or product development to understand the FitChoice philosophy - see overleaf for a little more information on the products you have in your FitChoice Foundation Pack – and how to optimise them for achieving your goals.

Mindful EaterIf you’re a Mindful Eater, you already do a good job of instinctively eating when you’re biologically hungry. You know to stop when your body has received enough fuel, although you may occasionally indulge in Emotional or Environmental eating. You may be finding that your metabolism is slowing due to ageing or a health condition, and that may be leading to weight gain. Generally your eating is motivated by physiological cues such as hunger.

Emotional Eater If you’re an Emotional Eater, you may use food on a regular basis to address your emotional needs, instead of turning to other coping or relaxation methods. These emotional needs can range from stress, disappointment and boredom to a desire to celebrate something or reward yourself. You’re most often triggered to overeat by internal cues, such as comforting yourself.

2

3

Environmental Eater If you’re an Environmental Eater, you may have a tendency to overeat in social situations or whenever you encounter delicious food that you simply can’t resist. You can be extremely sensitive to the overall eating environment, and you’re most often triggered to overeat by external cues ie what is going on around you rather than in response to your biological hunger.

FitChoice Protein Shakes are already a great way to get extra protein into your diet and we think we have truly optimised the benefits of the protein sources and made them pretty tasty too! Mixed simply with water they provide a low calorie protein boost. If you want to boost the calories a little to support your diet and activities or if you are seeking a little more flavour variety then follow our basic guide to making the perfect shakes!

The FitChoice Basic ShakeFor best results put the liquid in first, then add 250ml of water or skimmed milk to a tall glass or beaker. Then add two scoops (32g) of FitChoice Protein Shake powder. You can simply mix it up using a fork, whisk or even a hand blender to achieve a fresh and light consistency. That’s all there is to it!

The FitChoice Combo ShakeFollow directions as per the FitChoice Basic Shake but instead use one scoop of Vanilla Flavour and one scoop of Chocolate….

The FitChoice Plus ShakeGive things a boost by adding a shot of one of Neways’ liquid nutritional products to the basic FitChoice Shake recipe. We think that Acai Action works pretty well with either flavour of the Basic Shake or the Combo Shake. NewVera mixes it pretty well with Vanilla flavour too….

The FitChoice SmoothieFruit makes a highly nutritious food. You can add several pieces to a FitChoice Shake and whizz it up in a liquidiser or using a hand blender. First add the liquid to the beaker/blender then chop up your chosen ingredients add them to the liquid and blend. Then add two scoops (32g) of FitChoice Protein Shake and blend until smooth. Spoon if it’s thick or glug it if it’s runny. Have some fun experimenting to find the recipes that really hit the spot!

The FitChoice products are born from a 25 year heritage of creating cutting-edge product formulas. When developing the products we knew that people need more than simply products to help them achieve improvements in their fitness and weight consciousness. We engaged three experts in their respective fields of psychology, nutrition and fitness to help develop FitChoice support programmes that will help you along the way.

The thinking behind FitChoice – developed with help from the EXPERTS.

“The reason I am involved with

FitChoice is that I believe this system can help people to manage their weight and live healthier lives.”

“I like FitChoice because it’s unique, it’s realistic, and it provides tools and products to help you succeed.”

“One thing I like about FitChoice is how the system takes into account your individual

comfort level with lifestyle change.”

Joy Musselman, Expert DieticianJoy Musselman is certified in Adult Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is actively involved in professional organisations such as the academy and the Center for Mindful Eating. In addition to meal plans and recipes related to FitChoice, Joy also created diet and nutrition tips for each FitChoice Comfort Level, plus information on mindful eating.

Dr. Andrea Vazzana, Ph.D. and Medical Expert Dr. Vazzana is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise

in eating disorders and weight management. She has been instrumental in creating the “Find Your Path” Eating Type and

Comfort Level assessments that form the unique FitChoice mind and body approach to fitness and weight consciousness.

Dr Jason Slack, Fitness ExpertDr. Slack is an expert in exercise physiology and Department Chair for the Exercise Science and Outdoor Recreation department at Utah Valley University. His invaluable input towards

the FitChoice programme has been the creation of advice and tips to increase physical activity levels appropriate to each FitChoice Comfort Level.

When you completed your “Find Your Path” self-assessment it also assessed how comfortably you can adopt new habits and respond to new ideas. Your FitChoice Comfort Level connects you with the FitChoice tools that are just right for you, not too hard or too easy.

You most likely fall into one of the three categories listed below – on the page opposite is a simplified table featuring examples of tip and goals that may match your FitChoice Comfort Level. More detailed suggestions can also be downloaded from www.neways.eu

Uncomfortable

Change can be more difficult for those who fall into the “Uncomfortable” category. You may have habits that you feel will be hard to part with. You can improve your confidence by implementing highly achievable goals. If your diet, exercise, and FitChoice goals are less strict and generally offer more flexibility, you will find yourself benefitting more from gradual lifestyle modifications rather than drastic and rapid changes in direction.

Comfort Based on Benefit

If you’re in this category, you’re willing to put consistent work and discipline into a programme as long it shows results. Whatever your primary motivation may be, you are prepared to focus and overcome obstacles that may get in your way. Some of your FitChoice tips and goals may be a little more challenging and rigorous, to help you make speedier changes to your lifestyle. You may still find that you need some mentoring to stay on track but as you achieve each goal you will feel even more committed to the next level.

Comfortable

If you’re in this category, you have a positive attitude about looking after your general health, fitness and managing your weight. By and large you are very focussed with strong motivation to achieve and will stick to a chosen programme even without strict supervision. You need to beware of extreme measures as this can lead to exhaustion and fatigue. Your FitChoice tools will help you meet your goals, build sustainable habits, and achieve lifelong weight and fitness maintenance, while avoiding burnout.

Diet tips and goals Fitness tips and goals Mindset tips

Commit to use a smaller plate Using a smaller plate can be a simple way to moderate your portion sizes and help you to eat just the amount of food you need to fuel your life.

FitChoice SMART Goal : I will use a smaller plate for at least one meal per day for one week.

Why not hoof it? How many errands do you run that you could do without your car? Seriously, do you need to drive everywhere? In fact, you could probably even ride your bike to the shops if you’re picking up just a couple of things.

FitChoice SMART Goal: This week, I will choose two errands I can take care of without using my car.

Your reason why. To have started on FitChoice means you do have an objective. If for any reason your morale is taking a beating, try creating a list of pros and cons on why you should stay the course. The short-term cons of staying with the program often pale to the long-term benefits.

FitChoice SMART Goal: Every day when I wake up I will look again at my pros and cons list.

Don’t skip breakfast What’s for breakfast? If you’re like many people, you probably don’t give a lot of thought to breakfast or simply skip breakfast altogether in an attempt to save time during your morning routine. But breakfast is an important meal!

FitChoice SMART Goal : This month, I will eat breakfast every morning.

Put it on the calendar It can be tough to find time to exercise. Just like everything else in your life, you’ve got to have a schedule or it gets put on the back burner. Sit down with your calendar or your calendar app on your phone—whatever you use to schedule your time.

FitChoice SMART Goal : I will sit down with my calendar every week and plan my workouts for that week.

Make a list You do this kind of thing every day shopping lists, your work “to do” list and your FitChoice SMART goals. Make a list 10 different distracting activities to do when you feel like eating. Make the activities relatively enjoyable to keep your mind occupied.

FitChoice SMART Goal : If I feel hungry after dinner I will call an old friend who I haven’t spoken to in a while.

Add protein for greater satiety If you’ve ever tried to change your eating habits, you know it can be hard at first. You may not feel satisfied initially as you begin to cut out unhealthy fats and sugars. Protein helps you feel satisfied and can help prevent you from eating too much. It also helps build muscles that burn fat.

FitChoice SMART Goal : This month, I will carefully add some extra protein to my diet.

Buddy up It’s easy to skip a workout if it’s just you but you just don’t want to disappoint your workout partner. Find a friend who likes the same kind of workout you do. Team up, count on each other, motivate each other, and you’ll see that you’re sticking to your fitness objectives.

FitChoice SMART Goal : This week, I will find an exercise partner who I can work out with at least twice a week.

Forgive yourself. Let go of perfectionism. Trying to be perfect is a sure way to fail. Radically accept that you are imperfect, as is everyone else. Set realistic goals, and learn to forgive yourself for lapses.

FitChoice SMART Goal : Each week I will review my FitChoice progress and focus on my strengths and recent achievements.

In addition to identifying your Eating Type, Comfort Levels and Foundation Pack, your “Find Your Path” self-assessment also directs you to the right FitChoice support tools. These tools include: • A FitChoice journal to chart your progress. • Customizable goals. • Tips on diet and nutrition, including menus and recipes that include full nutritional analysis. • Tips on physical activity, including exercise routines. • Tips on mindful and instinctive eating.

The reason you should establish FitChoice SMART Goals. One main reason we don’t reach our goals is because our goals are not properly set. Establishing your own personal FitChoice SMART Goals creates a clear pathway, spelling out changes in behaviour that are necessary to become your ideal self. They help you to focus your energy and direct your efforts toward beneficial activities and away from negative or distracting activities that may be competing for your attention.

Your FitChoice SMART Goals need to be :• Specific: Define goals in terms of what will be accomplished, why, who will be involved, where, and which constraints and

resources will be involved.• Measurable: Establish criteria to measure progress toward attaining your goal. Decide how you will determine your

progress, when you will determine your progress, and where you want to be at each benchmark.• Attainable: Meaningful goals are challenging yet realistic. Goals should help you alter your behaviour without overwhelming

or frustrating you.• Relevant: Goals should be clearly worthwhile in helping you achieve your ideal self. You need to want it—it needs to matter

to you, not just to your spouse, friend, or boss.• Time bound: When goals are accompanied by a target completion date, this helps establish a sense of priority, urgency, and

focus. In the spaces below you can see examples of three FitChoice SMART Goals, one for diet, one for fitness and one for mindset.

EXAMPLEDietGoal: I commit to use a smaller plate at dinner every day for a week Start 24/9/12 End 1/10/12FitnessGoal: I will walk or run for at least 30 minutes five times this week Start 24/9/12 End 1/10/12MindsetGoal: I will avoid taking second helpings with meals this week. Keeping a FitChoice Journal

You will need to keep your FitChoice SMART Goals in mind as much as you can. One key to achieving them is identifying patterns in your routine so you can decide where to make changes. We have devised a simple journal to help you keep a track of your eating habits and the circumstances surrounding your eating.Doing this will help you become more aware of your eating habits, so you can mindfully adjust these habits as needed to meet your objectives.

Every day, make sure you record everything you eat and answer the questions about how you felt, who you ate with, and how aware you were of your hunger and fullness.

As you track your behaviour and make adjustments, you will see progress.
