John 15:5"I am the vine; you arethe branches. If a manremains in me and I inhim, he will bear muchfruit; apart from meyou can do nothing.”

One of the posi-tive effects of the recentfinancial tragedy ourcountry experienced isthat people appear to be

shifting their priorities. People are centeringtheir lives more on home and family ratherthan jobs and careers. We are looking againat the value of relationships, and even our\more time with their loved ones, accordingto a recent Gallup poll. There is hope that weare becoming less materialistic and self-absorbed. It is one of the good things thathave come out of a very bad situation.

It is always interesting to hear what peo-ple are making resolutions about as the NewYear begins. Ann Landers has made somegood suggestions in her column. She writes,“Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an oldgrudge, and replace it with some pleasantmemories. Free yourself of envy. Resolve tostop magnifying small problems and shootingfrom the lip. Lighten up. When you feel likeblowing your top, ask yourself, ‘Will it matterin a week from today?’ Be optimistic. Readsomething uplifting. Deep-six the trash. Walktall, and smile more. Do not be afraid to say,‘I love you.”

Some other resolutions I read are a littleless serious. “I have resolved not to do drugsanymore, because I get the same effect juststanding up really fast.” “I have resolved tolive in my own little world, because at leastthey know me here.” “I have resolved to staymarried, because it is so great to find thatone special person you want to annoy for therest of your life.” “I have resolved to not makeany resolutions, because nobody is perfect. Iam a nobody, therefore I am perfect.”

There is a place on the Internet whereyou can make your new year’s resolutionsonline, and they will email you a monthlyreminder of what your resolutions were as ifanybody wanted to know after the firstmonth. It is called HiAspire.com. But what Ifound interesting was seeing what resolutionspeople were making for 2010. Not surprising-ly, exercise and dieting topped the list. Alsonear the top were things like becoming a bet-ter person and a better spouse. But the onethat caught my attention was the one thatsaid, “Find Dreams.” People have dreams andthey want to live them out.

How can you move beyond just makingresolutions and begin creating solutions for

your lives? We do it by working on the coreissues of our lives instead of just making cos-metic changes. We have to go to beyond thesymptoms to the source of our problems.Losing weight may only be a symptom of thecore issue of a lack of self-control in your lifearound which there may be many othersymptoms. Perhaps you are using food tosedate yourself. Controlling your drinking mayonly be a symptom of the fact that you arelooking for something to deaden the pain anddisappointment in your life, instead of findingyour comfort and strength in God. Controllingyour anger may only be a symptom of adeeper need you have to control life and thepeople in it with your rage. We focus on thecore issues rather than the presenting prob-lem.

This week I would suggest three areas onwhich to place your focus. The first is: Youshould focus on personal development.

If you want to develop yourself personal-ly, the first thing you need to do is see if thereis any un-surrendered area of your life. Ifthere is an area of your life that you are hold-ing back from God there will be no growth inyour personal life, no personal development. You cannot have victory and freedom in yourlife if you are holding some things back fromGod’s control. You cannot resist God and thenexpect his blessing in your life. It is not goingto happen. Talk about core issues! If you aresaying, “I will obey God in everything exceptthis,” you are blocking God’s work in your life. This is not so much personal development asit is allowing God to do a work in you. Thetruth is that you cannot develop yourself thisis the reason that our resolutions usually fail. This is the work of God. Paul realized thiswhen he wrote: “So I find this law at work:When I want to do good, evil is right therewith me. For in my inner being I delight inGod’s law; but I see another law at work inthe members of my body, waging war againstthe law of my mind and making me a prison-er of the law of sin at work within my mem-bers. What a wretched man I am! Who willrescue me from this body of death?” But thenhe answers his own question when he says,Romans 7:21-25 says,” “Thanks be to Godthrough Jesus Christ our Lord!” Amen!

It is through Christ that we are deliveredfrom our own wretchedness not our owneffort.

But what if you have failed so many timesbefore that you have given up even trying?Take seriously the words of Paul when hewrote in “Philippians 3:12-14 says’ “ Not thatI have already obtained all this, or havealready been made perfect, but I press on totake hold of that for which Christ Jesus tookhold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself

In the Dec. 21article titled, “The ImpactPlayers of the Year - 2009,” Sen.West was credited as the drivingforce behind landing for Dallas, the first and only public lawschool in the Dallas/Fort Worthmetro region.

“A public law school hasalways been part of my vision of bringing a high-er education venue to the City of Dallas, saidSenator West. “This university odyssey has beennearly 15 years in the making and to see it cometogether step-by-step, phase after phase, hasbeen exceptionally rewarding. But more impor-tantly, this law school, as a center of excellencewithin the University of North Texas at Dallas, willprovide opportunities for generations to come asour city and region continues to grow andprogress.”

The University of North Texas at DallasCollege of Law will accept its first class beginningthe Fall 2011 Semester. The law school will even-

tually be housed in DowntownDallas at “Old City Hall”through a partnership withthe City of Dallas. The articlediscusses Sen. West’s role, other key players involved andthe stages needed to win leg-islative support and profes-sional accreditation.

“It’s been a team effortall along. And I am thankfulthat we took the steps neededto first gain community sup-port,” said Senator West. “Ateach critical juncture, repre-sentatives of the entire NorthTexas region turned out innumbers to push this initiative

through the Legislature in a manner that helpedconvince my colleagues from across the state thatit was worthy of their support.

“Then to be recognized by my professionalpeers further validates that my labor in the nameof providing educational opportunities was effortwell-spent,” Senator West added.

In its September 28 issue, Texas Lawyernamed Senator West as one of 25 ExtraordinaryMinorities in Texas Law. The articles covered thecontributions of members of the legal profession ingovernment, private practice and corporate law.

Senator West again recognized by Texas Lawyer

Senator Royce West

By Lola SearcyEvery year around this time we make resolu-

tions about what we’re going to do in the New Year. Most of us make what we call New Year’s resolu-tions. And most of the time, we talk about whatwe are going to do differently in the New Year. Most of us lie to ourselves and talk about thoseextra pounds that we are going to try to lose thisyear; some of us talk about getting out of debt bypaying off our credit cards, paying off those billsthat haunted us since day one of the previous year! Some of us have made resolutions to spend moretime with our families, especially our children. Some of us are still talking about finding “Mr. or Ms.Right, this year!

This year, I thought about the resolutions wemake and have made throughout the years, and Istarted to think, “What about our religious resolu-tions”? What resolutions have we made about ourrelationship with Jesus Christ this year? After all, none of the traditional ones we’ve made will everstand a chance of being resolved, if we don’t firstresolve the one we made when we decided to fol-low Jesus Christ so many years ago! I wonder ifthe reason we don’t publicly state our religious res-olutions is because we are ashamed of our religiousbeliefs! After all, it seems that as a Nation, wehave erased religion from every aspect of our lives! We have decided as a Nation that children may nolonger pray in school, at sporting events, etc. Wehave taken Christ out of Christmas. Instead ofMerry Christmas, we now say, “Happy Holidays” or

“Season’s Greetings.” Imagine that! A Nation thatwas founded on religious principles has allowed afew, (Madeline Murray O’Hare, the United StatesCourts) to silence us when it comes to our religion.

I wonder how many of us realize how ourrelationship with God affects our everyday life. Imean, how do we ever expect to pay off our cred-it card debt, when we don’t even pay our tithes?Remember? Malachi 3: 8-10 (KJV): 8 Will a manrob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offer-ings.

9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye haverobbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and proveme now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I willnot open you the windows of heaven, and pour youout a blessing, that there shall not be room enoughto receive it.

You have to give before you can receive.Remember, the more you give, the more he givesto you! If you are not a tither, make a resolutionto begin this year giving back to God what he hasalready given to you. You will be amazed at howthings will begin to turn around in your life, onceyou put tithing into practice! Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and runningover, shall men give into your bosom. For with thesame measure that ye mete withal it shall be meas-ured to you again.”

And how will we ever get rid of those extrapounds if we don’t do as our Lord commands us inHebrews 12: 1 “Wherefore seeing we also are com-passed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, letus lay aside every weight, and the sin which dothso easily beset us, and let us run with patience therace that is set before us.”Let us resolve to spend more time with our childrenthis year! The classrooms used to be places ofrefuge, places where our children could go to learnand pray together. I remember when we would beon our best behavior in school, just so we couldearn the right to read the announcements and praythe Morning Prayer before we began our schoolday.

As a matter of fact, I was reading an article inLiberty magazine that talked about how we haveallowed the State and Federal government to cen-sor our religious expressions.

John W. Whitehead wrote in theJanuary/February 2010 edition of the Liberty mag-azine, “Religion and religious expression have beenobjects of censorship in the public schools for quitesome time. However, the intolerance of anythingrelated to religion has taken a turn for the absurdin recent years.”Our children need and deserve as much of our timeand attention as we can give them nowadays.Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to, “train up a child in theway he should go: and when he is old, he will notdepart from it.” The word of God is true! Genesis 22:1-18Can we as Christians pass thetest of the almighty God?

We are not asking the ques-tion can you pass God’s tests, but will you? You see, as a childof God you know that “you cando all things through Christ whostreghthens you”. In order forus to pass God’s test, we mustbe willing to do what Godbrings to us as a test. You seeGod knows just how much wecan bear, but we do not knowhow much we can bear, that is

where the song came from. You see, sometimes Godtests us in order that we might know how much weourselves can take or bear, and when we are testedby God we learn something about God that we neverknew before. We become stronger in our faith, wegrow in His grace.

In verse (1) the bible says; “ after these thingsGod tested Abraham.” What was the writer referringto when he pinned these words? It appears that thereexisted a connection a connection in Abraham’s lifebetween the events prior to his testing and to exam-ine three significant happenings in chapter 21. First ofall, God had blesses Abraham and Sarah with theirfirst son in their old age, his name was Isaac.Secondly, Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian slave-girl who hadgiven birth to Abraham’s first son, Ishmael, was sentaway from Abraham and Sarah’s household with hisfirst son. But the bible makes plain, “God was with theboy, and he grew up.” Thirdly, Abraham andAbimelech, a Philistine commander made a covenantwith one another, and Abimelech affirmed that Godwas with Abraham in all that he did.

If we have noticed, there is a one-word commondenominator running through each of these “pre-test-ing” events-blessings. I know I am right about this!Abraham’s life was blessed by God. God blessedAbraham with two sons in his old age. God blessedAbraham’s first son born out of wedlock. God blessedAbraham’s relationship with would-be-enemies.

There is a key point emerging from verse (1).After God had blessed Abraham with more than he

could have ever dreamed, GOD TESTED HIM. Whatdoes this tell us? It simply tells the Christian believer, that: AFTER A BLESSING you better get ready ‘FOR ATESTING. Take a look at the word testimony literally– Tes – i –mony”. There can not be a testimony with-out a test somewhere in the formula. If we could pickthe brains of the great leaders of this world we wouldfind that each of them endured and came throughsome intense and crucial testing times in their lives. Iam not talking about just any leaders; I am talkingabout men and women who have made a divinelydirected difference in the lives of the multitudes.

You see, testing refines an individual, and he orshe who makes it through God’s tests always emergesa better person and a better leader. Abraham did notrun from his testing period when God informed himthat it was testing time. When his name was called,Abraham responded, “Here am I Lord”. How do wereact when God tests us? Do we protest, or say, “nonot now Lord!” I am not ready! Or, ask God ques-tions? Do we try to run away and hide and flunk thetest without even trying? Or, do we respond in faithlike Abraham. “Lord, here am I.” Testing measuresyour maturity; it scales your spirituality. Testing quan-tifies your commitment, testing assesses your aspira-tions, testing rules your righteousness. Thank GodAbraham did not run off and hide and completely giveup.

Let me raise a question right here. What does ittake to pass God’s test of Love. Let me answer foryou.

1. Give God the best you have: Abraham’s onlyson

2. Follow divine direction: The reason why wemake low failing grades on God’s test is due to not fol-lowing His directions.

3. Let go and let God! Abraham gave his bestand trusted God to provide.

4. Trust God ro provide whatever is needed.Whatever you need to pass God’s love test, He willprovide.

Will you pass God’s love test? When you passthis test your tested life becomes a testimony.

Let us not forget to read our Bible. May Godbless you real good, and may He ever keep you in Hisloving care.

Can we as Christians Pass the Test of the Almighty God?

Prayer ClosetPASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Have you ever discov-ered the value of quiet-ness in effective prayer? We live in a world of con-fusion and endless rush-ing to and from. Eachcentury of our time hasbeen more turbulent andnoisy than the last. SinceAdam, man has allowedthe cares of life to dis-connect his soul fromGod.

In the midst of a gen-eration that had forgot-ten God, Elijah became

so discouraged that he asked God to take hislife. God came to Elijah in still small voice! When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face inhis mantle and prayed! That is God talked toElijah and Elijah talked to God. In the midstof the quiet time he had with God, therecame a deliverance from discouragementand torment.

The psalmist knew the value of quietnessin effective prayer. Indicated in Psalm 37:7,“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.Psalm 46;10 says, “Be Still and know that Iam God.”

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;old things have passed away; behold, all thingshave become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17

Typical resolutions in January are to loseweight, exercise more, spend less time at workand more time with family—maybe even stopchatting on the cell phone while driving.

It’s not surprising that we want to changethe things in our livesthat we’re unhappyabout—even thoughmost New Year’s reso-lutions are kept for nomore than 3 weeks.

What if you wereto ask God what Hewants you to change, improve, or begin thisyear? He might tellyou to:

• Demonstratemore of the fruit ofthe Spirit in your life,

which is “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kind-ness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal. 5:22-23).

• “Love your enemies, bless those whocurse you, do good to those who hate you, andpray for those who… persecute you” (Matt.5:44).

• “Go into the entire world and preach thegospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

• “Be content with such things as you have”(Heb. 13:5).

• “Walk according to His commandments”(2 John 1:6).

As believers and new creations, we can befree from old patterns and failures. We mustask God to help us live each day in the powerof the Holy Spirit. Then we can shed the oldand embrace the new.

The Old and the New

PastorClarence

We wish eachand everyreader of theElite News aHappy NewYear. We areexcited thatthe Lord hasgranted usthis extendedtime to workfor and withhim inK i n g d o mbuilding. Our

church School lesson was“Proclaimed in Baptism” Matt.3:1-6; 11-17. After 400 years ofsilence, no Prophet’s voice heardin Israel, no word from God, sud-denly a voice is heard crying outin the wilderness “Repent for thekingdom of God is at hand”. Johnthe Baptist the forerunner ofChrist called Israel to repentanceand baptism. God is still callingmen to repentance and baptism, the message has not changedbecause the hearts of men havenot changed. As important as thismessage is some have forsaken it,and replaced it with a gospel that

only promises temporal things andpeople with itching ears can’t getenough. God used public baptismto proclaim Jesus to be the Son ofGod. Our morning message wasdelivered by our esteemed pastorEld.L.T.Morgan from the subject“Becoming what God intendedyou to be” Rom.8:29. The Lordsaved us to transform our livesfrom what we were to what hewants us to be “the image of hisson”. To grow into Christian matu-rity does not happen by osmosis,we must decide to becomemature saints, making a concert-ed effort to grow. Many are afraidto make any commitment to any-thing and spend a lifetime drifting.Commitment can give your lifenew meaning and purpose. Somefear commitment because youhave to give up something butanything worth having cost some-thing, but when we commit toGodliness God becomes ourhelper and we can do all thingsthrough Christ who strengthensus. Make this your year to committo God and your church, live lifewith purpose.God bless

I want to leave our readers with somethingFirst Lady, Mrs. Ruth Chanel Brown of the‘Exciting” Ervay Cedar Baptist Church shared withour Women’s class on this past Sunday. She saidin order to have a successful 2010, we must makea new START.

Stop making Excuses – 2009 is gone. There’s nothing we can do about the past

Take inventory – Take a look at my behaviorin 2009 and determine what I can do differently tomake 2010 better.

Act on Faith – Don’t be afraid to put yourfaith into action!

Refocus – Change your focus. Start lookingat things in a different light.

Trust in God – Remember Proverbs 3; 5-6.Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean notunto thine understanding; in all thy ways acknowl-edge Him and he shall direct your paths!

One day Perseverance set out on the roadof change. He knew this road would lead himinto his new season. Therefore, he kept hisfocus by visualizing his dreams and goals. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere appeareda stumbling block called Persuasion. He wassuave, slick and smooth talking. Persuasionbegan to give Perseverance a list of reasonswhy he should abort his journey of change. Tohelp pled his case, Persuasion called on six ofhis closest buddies. “Say hello to Doubt,Delay, Detour, Discouragement, Don’t andDistractions,” he said with a crooked smile. Then they began to shout “You’ll never makeit, Why don’t you just give up and turn back?Who told you to dream big? People will laughat you, Where did you get that crazy idea? andYou’re too old to do something new.”

While they were speaking, Perseverancecontinued to move forward. He was deter-mined to keep his focus. He began to speakhis vision out loud. When they saw that hismind was made up, one by one they droppedout of sight leaving only Persuasion behind. Then Perseverance stood eye to eye withPersuasion and announced with confidence,“Now allow me to introduce you to seven ofmy traveling buddies.” Say hello to Focus,Preparation, Potential, Persistence, Power,

Passion and Priority. They each stepped for-ward and shook Persuasion’s hand. Then theyspoke words of conviction and commitment.“Keep your vision and your plan before you”,“Nothing is impossible with God”, “You can doall things through Christ which strengthensyou, “Don’t ever give up on your God-givenvisions, dreams and goals” and “Be confidentof this very thing, He Who has begun a goodwork in you will complete it.” Persuasion wasspeechless as he realized he was no match forPerseverance and his friends, so he too fadedaway.

Perseverance completed his journey andreaped all the benefits that awaited him. Buthe couldn’t keep his story to himself. He beganto tell everyone about his journey and howGod was with him all the way. Perseverancebecame an Encourager to all. And His StoryCan Become Your Story, if you keep yourFocus and Persevere. End what you begin in2010.

The Power of Perseverance yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing Ido: Forgetting what is behind and strainingtoward what is ahead, I press on toward thegoal to win the prize for which God has calledme heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Amen!

The second area of our focus is on build-ing relationships. None of us can survive thisworld alone. We were not created to live inisolation. There are no spiritual super heroeswho can live isolated and insulated lives. There is no such thing as an army of one. Weall know that the loner who needs no oneelse, and saves the world singlehandedly, isthe stuff of movies only. To think that you donot need other Christians supporting andhelping you is mere fantasy. To think you cansurvive emotionally separated from familyand friends is a destructive illusion. The Biblesays, “Romans 14:7 says, “For none of uslives to himself alone and none of us dies tohimself alone.” Amen! The reality is that weneed each other, and because we need eachother, we need to build relationships. This iswhat the church is all about. The church isnot an organization, it is an organism. Churchis not a place, it is people. When we aretogether, God meets us in ways that he doesnot meet us when we are alone. That is whyJesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where twoor three come together in my name, there amI with them. Amen!” When we come togeth-er, God comes to meet with us.

This leads to the third area on which weneed to focus: We focus on a life of service. One of the great tragedies of the world ispeople who live only for themselves. Theirwhole world centers around them. Everythingis measured on how it affects them. The onlyeffort they put forth is on things which willbenefit them. Their focus is on gettinginstead of giving. They want to be servedrather than serve. But the mark of true disci-ples of Jesus Christ is people who want Godto use their lives. They want to serve God byserving others.

When you are working to build relation-ships, other Christians benefit. When youdecide to let God use your life in service, thewhole world profits. God’s plan is that we alluse our special gifts for his kingdom. Our

lives can mean something if we choose to livefor something besides ourselves. There is aplace for all of us, for the Scriptures says inEphesians 4:11-14, “It was he who gavesome to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pas-tors and teachers, to prepare God’s peoplefor works of service, so that the body ofChrist may be built up until we all reach unityin the faith and in the knowledge of the Sonof God and become mature, attaining to thewhole measure of the fullness of Christ.”Amen!

Is your life being prepared for works ofservice? If not, you are missing God’s pur-pose for you as outlined in this scripture. Youare missing God’s Will and God’s blessings. J.H. Newman says, “God has created me, to dohim some definite service; he has committedsome work to me which He has not commit-ted to another. I have my mission I maynever know it in this life, but I shall be told itin the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond ofconnection between persons. He has not cre-ated me for nothing. I shall do good and Ishall do his work. Therefore, I will trust him.Whatever, wherever I am, I cannot be thrownaway.” You have a part to play in God’s planfor the world. Do not miss it because you arestarting the New Year right. Amen!

The playoffare set! TheCowboys defeat-ed theP h i l a d e l p h i aEagles to win theNFC East. Theyget at least onehome game. That's the goodnews. The bad news if any, is that theyget a chance to play the Eagles on con-secutive weekends.

I know some of the reasons givenfor getting rid of Wade are about asweak as buying a new car because youlost the keys to the present one.

I heard a couple that almost mademe laugh, but I thought no sane per-son would say such a thing; so thisperson had to be sick or never workedfor a living!

They said Jerry Jones wouldn'tfire Phillips because he didn't want acoach that would talk back to him.Wade was the type of guy that woulddo what Jerry wanted him to do, andcould get along with Jerry --duh!

If there's anyone out there who hasever worked for a living, I thoughtthose were job requirements!Especially if you wanted to get paidwith someone else's money!

Texas Tech just fired a coach thatwouldn't meet those requirements. If Iremember my history correctly, didn'tPresident Truman fire Gen. DouglasMacArthur for like reasons?

Tom Laundry was considered to beone of the most innovative coachesever. Tom brought in the 4-3 defensethat is still being used today.

In 29 years of Tom Laundry, andsuch Hall of Fame defensive playerslike Bob Lilly, Randy White, Mel Renfroand herb Adderly; the Cowboys neverhad back to back shut outs until

With Pro Bowlers like Charles Haley,Deion Sanders, Darren Woodson, etc.Not even the Big Tuna (Bill Parcels).Parcels and Johnson are both probablyHall of Fame Coaches; they were mostdefinetly your "talk back", "don't haveto get along" with the boss or themedia types and they never had backto back shut outs and both were defen-sive coaches!

Wade might be pretty good alongwith the fact that he can get alongwith his boss and the media! What anovel idea...Bobby Knight!

Rev. Wade Charles Davis

There's an old maxim that says it's hard tobeat a team three times in a season. The Eaglesbetter hope that's true, because it looked reallyeasy for the Cowboys to slap them around for thesecond time this season.

The Cowboys beat the Eagles inPhiladelphia back in Week 9, they stomped amudhole in them today in Week 17, and theirthird meeting will come about a week from rightnow. Today's trouncing gave the Cowboys theNFC East title and the third seed in the playoffs, while the loss sent the Eagles down to the sixthand final seed. As a result, we'll see the sameteams in the same building next week. The Eaglesprobably shouldn't even bother to go home.

Oddly enough, the other NFC game nextweek will also be a rematch of a game that hap-pened today. The Packers beat the Cardinals 33-7, and again, next week, we'll have the sameteams in the same building.

The Cardinals, though, can tell themselvesthat their loss was a fluke. They can tell them-selves they didn't care. After all, Matt

Leinart(notes) and Brian St. Pierre(notes) tookmost of the snaps at quarterback, and headcoach Ken Whisenhunt opted for a very conserva-tive game plan. They knew they were playing thesame team the next week, and that's how theychose to handle it.

The Eagles, on the other hand, really want-ed to beat the rival Cowboys, win the division, and get a first-round bye next week. They playedtheir starters the whole way. They wanted it. Ifthey tell themselves they weren't trying, they're abunch of fibbers. They went after it, and theywere handled like silly putty. Total yards were474-228, Cowboys. First downs were 21-9. Therewas no doubt about the better team on this day.

It leaves Andy Reid in quite the pickle. Whathe did against the Cowboys today is the best wayhe knows how to win a football game, and it's notlike he can come in next week and do the samething. He saw where that will get him. It's almostlike the Eagles have to reinvent themselves overthe course of a week.

We'll see how that goes.

Cowboys win; earn playoff game against team they ownThe Dallas Metroplex Musicians Association, an affiliate of the National Association of Negro

Musicians (an historic organization since 1919), will hold its annual Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday,January 30, 2010 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 800 North Main Street,Duncanville, TX 75116. The Dallas Metroplex Musicians Association (DMMA) promotes the achievementsof African American artists in the field of music and assists in the development of the next generation ofmusicians---the talented youth of the Dallas Metroplex.

DMMA serves as an advocate for increasing the awareness of the talents and contributions ofAfrican Americans in the Dallas community, the nation, the world. A highlight of the Luncheon is the galacelebration of music! All of those attending the Scholarship Luncheon will be treated to magnificent per-formances by accomplished musicians some of whom are past scholarship recipients. A small portion ofeach $50.00 ticket will help fund future scholarships; however, the organization accepts and welcomesdonations for this most worthy cause of providing scholarships for children and youth who wish to studymusic seriously. This Annual Luncheon also provides DMMA an opportunity to recognize and honor indi-viduals who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities in the field of music. The fol-lowing musicians will be honored by being inducted into the esteemed Musicians Hall of Fame during theLuncheon: Mark E. Davis, Dean Hill, Leonard O. Leach, Barbara Price Sims and Carmalie O. Sims. Inaddition to these “Hall of Famers,” DMMA will honor its own member, Norman O. Fisher, as “Musician ofthe Year,” for his many accomplishments in the community and contributions to the organization.

Gloria King and Gloria Lett are co-chairpersons of the 2010 Scholarship Luncheon. Persons inter-ested in attending should contact Gloria King at 214-371-4877 to reserve tickets to this popular annualevent.

Percy SuttonThrough his civicactivism, business ven-tures and legal work,Percy Sutton touchedmany people's lives.Thousands of them filledRiverside Church inManhattan onWednesday to say good-

bye to Sutton, who died Dec. 26 at age 89.Beginning early in the morning, they lined

up outside the church in frigid weather to getinto the sanctuary, where the formerTuskegee Airman's legacy was recalled in anearly four-hour-long service.

Among those who spoke were AttorneyGeneral Eric Holder, Gov. David Paterson,Mayor Michael Bloomberg and AttalahShabazz, one of Malcolm X's daughters. Manyrecalled how Sutton had given them advice or

had stood with them during struggles – orhad laid the foundation for their own success.

Holder called Sutton, who was born inTexas, "one of the nation's true heroes."

"Generations of other African-Americanlawyers stand on his strong, broad shoul-ders," he said.

He then read a statement from PresidentBarack Obama, who called Sutton's death "anenormous loss."

The Revs.Jesse Jacksonand Al Sharptonwere among agroup thatescorted Sutton'srelatives into thechurch.

Sutton servedwith the famedT u s k e g e eAirmen, an all-black unit, inWorld War IIbefore coming toHarlem, wherehe launched a

trailblazing career in civil rights, politics andbroadcasting. He served in the New YorkState Assembly and was Manhattan boroughpresident.
