The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance(IMA) Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Exodus 1:8-21

Our lesson Sundayhelped us to understandthat in our daily occupa-tion there is a way toserve God. We saw thatthe glory of man is fad-ing. After Joseph’sdeath there arose aKing that did not knowJoseph or his God givenwisdom that savedEgypt from famine. This

king feared the Israelites because oftheir numbers and fear caused him tocommand a form of genocide. Heordered the midwives to kill the boybabies born to the Israelite Women. Heknew if you cut off the males of a racethat race is weakened and unable toreproduction after its kind, and thewomen can easily be assimilated intosociety. Today young black men areincarcerated, killed, in greater numberthan any race, our women are having

abortions at an alarming rate this havereduced the number of AfricanAmericans. These midwives refused toobey the king and Israel continued tomultiply. In their civil disobedience theyserved God and preserved a nation.Friend what you are doing as a means ofserving God? Our sermon was deliveredby our beloved pastor Eld.L.T.Morganfrom the subject “The seeking Savior”Luke 19:1-10. Zacchaeus the tax collec-tor wanted to see Jesus without Jesusseeing him but to his amazement whenJesus approached the tree where he wasJesus called him by name. The Lordknows your name and where you are atall times. This is the only time in thegospels where Jesus invited himself toanyone’s house. But he says to everyonein Rev.3:20 behold I stand at the doorand knock. The wonder of salvation isthat we were not looking for the Lord buthe loved us and came seeking to save allthat was lost.

Be Blessed!

Midwives Serve God

Dallas, Texas – President of the Oak Cliff BaptistMinister’s Union, Reverend Lelious Johnson, will serveas Presiding Minister during this great Dr. MLK celebra-tion. The IMA has been around since 1936 and that’s a

long time to be doing anything. This organization has

had only four presidents, start-ing with Rev. Maynard JacksonSr., followed by Rev. E. C.Estell, Rev. S. M. Wright Sr.,and the current president, Dr.S. C. Nash.

While the IMA con-tinues to serve the respectivecommunities in which itresides, one thing remains

very constant, the IMA makes a huge differencethrough outreach from the various churches in the asso-ciation, the metroplex and surrounding countiesthrough feed the hungry programs, which physically, spiritually and emotionally help those in need. The IMAgets involved with politics when it affects the wellbeingof the communities they serve. This is just part of thehallmark of the IMA. Over the 73 years of existence, nothing has changed except the IMA has been aroundfor quite a while.

Back in 1988, the IMA started the Dr. MLK celebra-

tion in honor of the MLK holiday and celebration that isalways held two Sundays before the actual holiday, withoutstanding preaching and singing. Under the leader-ship of the current president, Dr. S. C. Nash, the IMAhas flourished and continues to make a difference. Thiscelebration is just another example of what the IMAmeans to the churches and the communities it serves.

At 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2009, atSaintsville Church of God in Christ, where Bishop J.Neaul Haynes is the pastor, there will be a church serv-ice and a wonderful celebration in honor of Dr. Martin

Luther King Jr., and the differ-ence he made in the world. The spoken word will be deliv-ered by the very capable Rev.Cedric Britt of Mt. GileadBaptist Church in Ft. Worth,Texas. So stop whatever youare doing on January 11th,and come join the celebration- you will be glad you did. Thecelebration will be held at

Saintsville Church of God in Christ, 220 South MarsalisAve., Sunday, January 11, 7:00 p.m. sharp. Don’t meetme there, beat me there.

was sworn in as Houston County Attorneyon January 1, 2009. The state of Texas isdivided into 254 counties. Miss Session isone of only three black county attorneys inthe history of the state of Texas and thefirst black female.

11:00 AM on January 1, 2009, theDistrict Court Room at the Houston CountyCourt House was filled to capacity withHouston County Officials, their families andwell wishers. It was an emotional momentfor Attorney Daphne L. Session, her familyand friends as the honorable Pam FosterFletcher, Judge 349th Judicial District, administered the oath of office to MissSession. It had been a long and difficultyear and a half of endless campaigning toget to this moment. But she was finallythere and had finally opened the doorway

for other AfricanAmericans bydemonstrating thatit could be done.

May 2006she became thefirst AfricanAmerican to opena private practicelaw office inCherokee Countyand HoustonCounty and prior to that the first AfricanAmerican Assistant District Attorney in bothAnderson County and Houston County.Daphne feels that what she has accom-plished is nothing out of the ordinary. Inprivate practice she has taken on manychallenges to defend her clients both pri-vate pay and court appointed and as a pros-ecutor seeing that justice was administered

fairly. She understands well that the stereo-typical image of an East Texas Prosecutor isnot that of an African American or awoman.

Miss Session is the daughter of RuskCity Councilman Walter Session and wifeMaxine Session. She was born and raised inRusk. Daphne graduated Sam HoustonState University with a Bachelor Degree inCriminal Justice and Texas Tech School ofLaw with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degreein 1999.

Advice Column: Ask Dr. Karen HollieDear Dr. Hollie,

I am a 38 year old sin-gle mother of three. I ama college grad and gainfullyemployed. My problem is Ihave been engaged severaltimes, but the actual wed-ding never takes place. Myfiends tell me that I am tooanxious to get married.Although I would love toget married to the rightman, I am never the one to start talkingabout marriage. The guys I meet usuallystart talking marriage after about 3 or 4weeks into the relationship. I know this istoo early in a relationship to think aboutmarriage, but it is always the same. Whenthe man keeps talking about marriage fora couple of weeks, I start thinking thatmaybe this time he’s the one I’m meant to

be with and I know all I need toknow about him. Then almostwithout really thinking about it, Iam planning a wedding. Of coursebefore the actual date arrives, Ifind out the negative things andthe wedding is off. Am I being toocritical or am I moving too fast?

Always a Fiancée Never a Bride

Dear Always, One thing to always remember is if youkeep doing the same thing then you willalways get the same result. Think aboutslowing down and just enjoying the rela-tionship one day at a time. Marriage is aserious commitment and can be challeng-ing under the best of circumstances. Sotake time to know him before even consid-ering marriage.

Are you wishing for a great New Year? Are youjust hoping or are you doing some planning? Are you considering your options or waiting forwhatever options might come your way? Whatwe really should be asking ourselves at the startof 2008 is what we can do to make it a greatyear.

We are filled with hopes and dreams andplans at the start of each New Year. But a newyear in itself holds no magic or power to help usbe better. We are accountable for our actions. We are accountable to others. And that meanswe are responsible for what we do. We are freeto make choices and take responsibility for whatwe choose.

I have always been proud of America as a"can do" nation. Ourhistory pages arefilled with examplesof Americans whostarted with little buttheir own ambitionand imagination andwho worked hard tobuild successful lives. We need to preserveour "can do" legacyand protect against atemptation to rely ongovernment pro-grams or other well-intentioned effortsthat chip away at our

values of self-reliance. We never do anyone afavor by shielding them from accountability andresponsibility.

People live in different circumstances andface varying temptations and obstacles. But Ibelieve God has given us talents and free will tomake choices. We all are accountable to some-one. We all need to take responsibility for ouractions. Accountability and responsibility can bea bit daunting to those who feel more comfort-able having choices made for them. But takingresponsibility for our actions actually liberates usby putting us more in control for improving ourlives. You are in the driver's seat of your life. Youcan navigate the road ahead and choose whichways to turn and when to stop or proceed.

All of our most common New Year's resolu-tions require a choice and responsibility. Thesmoker needs to choose to quit and snuff outthat last cigarette. A resolution to lose weight isa choice to eat a healthier diet and exercise. Abetter income is a choice to pursue a differentcareer or earn a college degree.

We can wish and hope and wait to see whata new year brings. Or we can choose to beaccountable for our actions and responsible forour own lives. We can blame our circumstancesor choose to change them. We can hope to bein the right place at the right time or choose toput ourselves there. We can choose to focus onour doubts or on our dreams. Or, to sum it upusing the title of one of my speeches, we can"Try or Cry."

The idea that the start of a new year auto-matically holds the promise of a brighter futureusually leads only to disappointment. The ideathat you can choose the start of a new year asa time to take action can begin to create abrighter future.

This year, make a choice to be accountableto all those who count on you. Be responsiblefor how you live today and how you might livebetter tomorrow. A Happy New Year is a choiceyou can make.

Deuteronomy 4:9"Only be care-

ful, and watchyourselves close-ly so that you donot forget thethings your eyeshave seen or letthem slip fromyour heart aslong as you live.Teach them toyour children

and to their children after them."What is the one thing most peoplehave in common at the New Year? Most of us make resolutions, don'twe? One young boy asked his fatherwhat his New Year's resolution was,and his father said he was going todo everything possible in the NewYear to make his mother very happy. The boy asked his mother what herswas, and she said, "To do everythingpossible to make sure your fatherkeeps his resolution." Why do wemake those things anyway? Wemake them because there are areasin our lives we are either unhappywith, or areas in our lives we wantto be better. This is one of thosevery few times when everybody, believers and non-believers alike, are going to be doing the exactsame thing at the exact same time:Leaving one place and going intoanother. Of course, I am talkingabout leaving 2008 and entering2009. So, what are you planning onleaving behind as you enter the newyear? When we leave 2008, I thinkwe should leave it completely.

When we pray, we often takeour needs to the Lord and ask Hishelp in dealing with them. And thenwhat do we do? Instead of leavingthem with Him, we take them backwith us as we finish praying. Weneed to learn to leave things wherethey belong. If 2008 really is a yearof completion for you, don't youthink you should learn to leave somethings completely?

What are some of the things weneed to leave behind? I think it canbe summed up by just saying thatanything in our lives that keep usfrom fully focusing on the Lordshould be left behind. Being aChristian means toalways be going forward. Have youever noticed how we always talkabout our walk? We talk about ourwalk in life; our walk of faith; andwalk with the Lord by its verynature, walking means moving for-ward. And as you move forward, youare always doing two things. Youleave one place and go into another.

As you leave, let us leave behindthose parts of ourselves that do usno good. Here are some suggestionsas to what you might choose to

leave behind. Leave your resent-ment behind. Each of us resentssomething. You might resent some-thing you have said and done, oryou might resent what someoneelse has said and done. But alongwith resentment comes unforgive-ness and unforgiveness is a verydangerous thing to keep in our lives.

Jesus said that if you forgive,God will forgive you, but if you donot forgive, God will not forgive you. Now, you must understand that toforgive does not mean the samething as to forget. You cannot eraseyour memories, but you can eraseyour resentment. Amen!

I would suggest that you justlook at things from a different per-spective. Instead of looking at yourresentment from the negative side, start looking at it from the positiveside. In other words, when youremember those things, as yousurely will, look at them as an exam-ple of what not to ever feel again.Understanding where they will leadyou should be enough encourage-ment to do so.

So forget those things whichhurt you and forgive those peoplewho did or said them. I like the oldsaying: "Look lovingly upon yourenemies, for it is you who havemade them." You choose to dislikepeople, based upon what you like orthink. You must realize that you arenot the perfect examples, so youshould not hold others accountableto your standards. Did you knowthat if you stoop low enough tobegrudge others, they win! So makea decision to leave your resentmentbehind. Amen!

You have to leave your worriesbehind. Worries are very much likerocking chairs. They give you some-thing to do, but they never take youanywhere while you are doing it.You only worry about two things:Things you can change and thingsyou cannot change. Why waste timedoing something that not only hurtsus and never helps us?

When we worry, it ends up tak-ing over your every thought and itbecomes the predominate thoughtof our lives. Yet, it is also worry thatcauses mental illness, stress, andmany other things that destroy yourlives. Worry has killed more peoplethan hard work ever did. Worry isthe cause of fear.

So, leave your worries behind asyou enter the New Year and leaveyour failures behind. You try so hardto be the best you can be, but youdo not always succeed. It is in thosetimes when you do not succeed, that you get discouraged becauseyou have failed, but what have youfailed in? You may not haveachieved just what we originally set

out to achieve, but you have notfailed. The only time you fail is whenyou do not try to do anything! Youneed to understand that God hascalled us to have faith long beforeHe ever called us to achieve. We arecalled to be in Christ, and as long aswe are in Him, we are successful.

The ancient Israelites neverseemed to get it right. They wouldall turn toward God and worship Himand everything in their lives woulddrastically improve. But after a cou-ple of hundred years, they wouldturn their backs on Him again andsee doom visit them and theirnation. But, we are told that God willturn our failure into success, if weallow Him fully into our lives. 1stKings 8:33-34 says, "When yourpeople, Israel, have been defeatedby enemies because they sinnedagainst you, and when they turnback to you and confess your name, then you will hear from Heaven, andyou will forgive their sins and bringthem back to the land of their fore-fathers." Amen!

When we as a nation, or as indi-viduals, have strayed from our Lord,we will find failure in our lives. Butwhen we turn back once again toHim, He will hear our pleas and Hewill restore us to success, for He is aGod of restoration. You have to letgo of the past and learn to grab holdof the future. representative thing. It represents to us thatthere is a whole range of new opportunitiesfor us; an unlimited chance to have a betterlife. At the start of every year, you see maga-zines publishing predictions on how they thinkthe world will be in the upcoming year. Someof these predictions have been accurate, butmost have fallen way short of being true.

How do you think you will fare in the NewYear? Will it actually be a year of new begin-nings for you? Will you have the wherewithalto analyze yourselves honestly, so that youwill know what areas to leave behind and

what things to bring with you? You need to bevery wise as you step through the doorway oftime.

If you are going to make the best of thefuture, you need to understand a few things. The first thing you need to do is to really geta grip on is your time, because your time onearth is limited. Psalms 90:10 states, "We liveto be about 70 or we may live to be 80, if westay healthy. But all that time is filled withtrouble and sorrow. The years quickly pass, and then you are gone. Amen!

By: Darryl Blair Sr.DALLAS, TEXAS - History was made on

January 2nd. The 73rd AT&T Cotton Bowl, the final Classic to be played in Cotton BowlStadium, was played in front of a recordcrowd. Cotton Bowl Athletic Association offi-cials declared the 2009 Classic a sell out.

A capacity crowd of 88,175 is expectedon January 2nd, crushing the previousClassic record of 77,500 set in the 1976Cotton Bowl between Arkansas and Georgia.

“What a great way for us to say goodbyeto our home of 73 years,” said KathySaunders, Chairman of the AT&T CottonBowl Classic. “It’s quite a celebration. With a

packed house and a fantastic match upbetween Ole Miss and Texas Tech, I’m notsure we could have written a better script.”

Cotton Bowl Stadium has been home to

the Classic since the game’s inception in1937. In 2010, the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classicis moving to the new Dallas CowboysStadium in Arlington.

The 2009 AT&T Cotton Bowl matchedOle Miss, 8-4 and ranked No. 20 in the APpoll, against an 11-1 Texas Tech squad thatfinished the regular season No. 8 in the AP.Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell andMichael Crabtree, both from the Dallas area.Ole MISS had some Texas flavor at quarter-back as well with Jevan Snead fromStephenville and Tight end Gerald Harrisfrom Terrell, Texas.

“We had over 16,000 new bleacherseats to sell after renovations to Cotton BowlStadium this pastyear, but with theincredible fan sup-port of both OleMiss and TexasTech, we could haveused a thousandmore,” Fin Ewing,AT&T Cotton BowlTeam SelectionChairman said.

The Rebelsmade their fourthappearance in theAT&T Cotton Bowl, and their first bowl sincethe Rebels defeated Okalahoma State, 31-28, in the 2004 Classic. The Red Raiders willbe making their fourth trip to the AT&TCotton Bowl and their first since the first2006 Classic against Alabama, when Techlost on a last minute field goal to the CrimsonTide, 13-10. With this years match beingwon by Ole Miss 47-34 on January 2nd.

The 2009 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic wasNationally televised on FOX. But the 73rdAnnual Cotton Bowl was a game for therecord books, with (2) fully supported teamsin Texas Tech and Ole Miss; it had all thetrappings of History with attendance and theFinality of the Cotton Bowl’s last Hurrah!!!!!!

The Cotton Bowl was more than just aCollege bowl season Football match-up, itwas a sad twist of fate as Texas Tech camein with high hopes and high expectations of

putting closure on the season, =only to havethose high expectations crushed by a under-estimated Ole Miss squad who used a Texasconnection of their own in Jevan Snead ofStephenville TX, and Gerald Harris of TerrellTX to hold back the Red Raiders. But theother the upset victory by Ole Miss overTexas Tech 47-34, the other underlining storyof the Cotton Bowl was the bowls move fromthe Cotton Bowl in South Dallas to the NewCowboys stadium in Arlington TX. KeenanWilliams and his son Texas Tech Alums was alittle bothered by the irony of this being thelast Cotton Bowl Game being played in theCotton Bowl and losing the Backdrop of theState Fair grounds” on the other hand

Michael ConradiDirector of ExternalAffairs for the CottonBowl Remarked that “the Move is a precur-sor to getting in theBCS ChampionshipGame rotation by theadded seating andthe domed stadium afact that helps posi-tion the game andremove the equationof the weather”

Another story playing out at the CottonBowl was the issue of passing the proverbialtorch of Special Operations and Logisticsfrom the Dallas Police Department to theArlington PD, in charge of this arduous taskwas Chief Deputy J.F. Cotner / of the DPDwho passed thetorch on to ChiefDeputy and Directorof SpecialOperations LaurettaHill (a AfricanAmerican Female) ofthe Arlington PD,both officersexpressed someguarded feelingsabout the gamewhile Deputy ChiefJ.F Cotner remarked

“ Dallas is a CAN DO city and we will reboundand have a number of great attributes tooffer, I am none the less sadden by loosingthe Tradition rich Cotton Bowl game” on theother hand Chief Deputy Lauretta Hill ofArlington PD remarked that “while we aregrateful for the coming of the Cotton Bowl Imust and we (the City) must stay groundedin our understanding of the task at hand androle out the Red Carpet in a very responsibleand careful way” We are the beneficiaries ofthis most prestigious game and some otherevents, Such as the NCAA ChampionshipBasketball game, the Super Bowl , the NBAAll-Star Game, among many other eventsand I will be a constant mission traveling toall these destinations to understand thesecurity issues at hand, but we are non theless grateful for the opportunity to host theseevents as Arlington becomes the SportsEvent Capital of Texas and the surroundingcommunity.” Of course Dallas will miss theCotton Bowl and especially the Mom and Pop

business’s of theSouth Dallas commu-nity but as one notedDallas Civic leaderremarked, we will besearching and plan-ning to secure anoth-er Bowl Event to pro-mote and show caseDallas” stay tuned formore of the CottonBowl story and theSouth DallasCommunity.
