Kevin Luksus, M.D., is a Catholic family physician, author, and parish leader with twenty-five years of clinical experience and thirty-five years of experience as a lay minister in both parish and diocesan settings (author's bio, Amazon.com.) I’ve referenced his book (A Shot in the Arm. A Guide to Diagnose and Improving Your Spiritual Health) in one of my Porch Talks. I was looking at a presentation he once gave entitled, “Parish Dynamics.” Dr. Luksus asks why certain parishes seem to be growing, thriving and doing well while others seem to be stagnant or diminishing. He says that these involve processes of spiritual change and conversion. There is a counter dynamic that he calls spiritual resistance that influences a parish community. It can also have an impact on an individual as well. It is this spiritual resistance that I’d like to focus on in this article. There are six types of spiritual resistance that can affect the spiritual growth of an individual. They are: 1. Sin. This would especially include pride, selfishness, and complacency, also known as sloth. 2. Attachments. Here we’re talking about the sins of greed and gluttony. Do we possess any unhealthy attachments to objects, activities, or persons? 3. Natural resistance to change is about love for things that are familiar. Habits that prevent us from changing. An over concern for safety and security. Rigid thinking. 4. Hang-ups and Disorders have to do with addictions or obsessions. They involve unhealthy attachments to things or people or activities. Encountering Christ - Through Word, Liturgy, Charity and Community

FROM the PASTOR’S DESK . . .

They are:

1. Sin. This would especially include pride, selfishness, and complacency, also

known as sloth.

They

involve unhealthy attachments to things or people or activities. (Cont’d on Page 4)

TMIY – THAT MAN IS YOU! CONTINUES IN ITS FIFTH YEAR – “THE FIGHT OF FAITH”.

That Man is You! honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers.

The Fight of Faith equips and enables men to engage in the cosmic, spiritual battle raging in our day. Authentic masculine identities will emerge to inspire heroic lives of service to a calling greater than ourselves. The Fight of Faith is uniquely both contemplative and practical.

Examples of this semester’s topics: * A Cause Greater than Yourself; * A Band of Brothers; * The Battle against Lukewarm Christianity; and * The Battle against the Dictatorship of Noise.

Come, join us, even though you have not taken previous sessions. Come as you are. Sessions begin on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 6:30 am (doors open at 6am). We will meet at St. Norbert’s Oratory.

For detailed information and registration for this free program go to the parish website @ https://saintmonicachurch.org/that-man-is-you or contact Tom McGurk at 610-213- 8726, or at [email protected].

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY (continued from Page 1)

These have an inordinate power over our lives and decisions. 5. Secular and Cultural Influences. Inordinate attachment to social media plays a big role here. Anxiety and excessive concern about the current state of politics also can fall under this category. 6. Indifference and Apathy. This is another example of sloth. It can also involve the sin of pride. People just don’t want to invest the time and effort into improving their spiritual life. They don't wish to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Or they have an attitude that they are “doing just fine” without any relationship to Christ or God, any church or community. So here’s a question. Take a look at those categories above. Each of us has a personality and a personal spirituality that is negatively affected by at least one of those items. Which one is it for you? Here's the good news: If you’re reading this article, you are already moving in a positive direction by using the Ignatian idea of “being awake.” You have already taken the first step. As a second step, identify which of the items above applies to you. Finally, step three, simply take that in prayer to the Lord. See where the Holy Spirit leads you from there.

Please mark your calendars and Save the Date for Welcome Back Week at Saint Monica’s! Stay tuned! More details to follow!

POOR BOX DONATIONS

During the month of September, all donations to the poor box will be given to the Welcome Center run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in Kensington. Since 2002, the sisters have been assisting immigrants in Philadelphia in the spirit of Saint Joseph, whom the Gospel of Matthew describes as a "just man" filled with compassion. As needs grew, the Welcome Center expanded its space in 2017. The sisters educate immigrants by providing classes in English, citizenship, and computer skills. They also assist families in navigating the social services network and aim to improve their quality of life by helping them to become self-sufficient. The money collected from the Poor Boxes in August was for the benefit of the Great Valley Food Cupboard and amounted to $282.10. God bless you for your continued generosity.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! ABBEYFEST: Faith, Music and Family IS BACK this September! Join us for the all-day music festival on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 2PM – 10PM (doors open at 12 noon) on the grounds of Daylesford Abbey in Paoli. Come join us for this music, family and faith-filled outdoor festival that features bands/Christian artists, mass, confessions and Eucharistic adoration. In addition to music, there will be food, craft vendors/exhibits, and kid activities. There is something for all ages…SO…grab some friends, your family, a blanket…and make a day of it! Our 2021 music line-up features: Matt Maher, The Scally Brothers, We are Messengers, Alverlis, FireHill Worship, and more! Philadelphia’s Archbishop Nelson Perez will also be joining us for the day and will be celebrating Mass at 4pm! More Information and Ticket information can be found at: www.theabbeyfest.com
