I am honored to be your new Alumni Association President, following in the footsteps of past presidents Dave Seeger and Janet Meacham.

I am proud to be an alum of Owens Community College!

I’ve been a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2005 and have loved every minute of it. I’m passionate about education and about Owens and I know you are too.

Even though this time of year is a season of harvest and of preparing for the long winter, at Owens it is more like spring.

We are in a season of new beginnings, with a new President, Dr. Larry McDougle, and a new Findlay-area Campus Vice President, Dr. Melissa Green. To Dr. McDougle and Dr. Green, I pledge my support and give my promise that the Alumni Association will continue to be Owens’ number one cheerleader!

I am delighted to be working with other wonderful alumni champions, including Steve Cotner as Vice President, Mark Carr as Treasurer, Christi Wagner as Secretary and of course, Dave Seeger as Past President. We

do have one other new member of the board – Prentice Simmons, President of the Owens Community College Student Government. We’re delighted to welcome him to the Alumni Association.

This season brings other new beginnings. I’m thinking especially of all the kindergarteners who have begun their first year of school, eager to learn. Many of these young students are benefitting from backpacks and other school supplies provided through our Backpack to the Future campaign. It’s time for a new hockey season. The Toledo Walleye will be back for their second season and I hope you’ll join me on January 28, 2011 to cheer them on. And it’s time for a new CFPA season, with many great performances scheduled that will enlighten and entertain us and enrich our lives.

If you haven’t been back to our campuses in awhile or been to an alumni event, please come back to touch base with old friends and meet new ones. We’re going to have a great year!

Sincerely,

Andrea M. Gurcsik, President

Heritage Hall Now opeNed

Owens Community College began the 2010-11 academic year by unveiling a newly renovated $2.9 million Heritage Hall building.

In addition to providing educational opportunities to thousands of students, Heritage Hall serves as the new home to the College’s School of Business and Information Systems and the School of Nursing.

The 38,304 square-foot Heritage Hall building is located on the Toledo-area Campus, and formerly served as home to the Penta Career Center. It features six designated experiential learning classrooms for instruction and hands-on laboratory learning, all with state-of-the-art technology and academic resources.

Three of those classrooms are used by the School of Business and Information Systems. The office administration classroom area is designed to simulate a modern office setting complete with individual work stations that each have a computer, adjustable keyboard, phone system and scanner. Students in the information security and networking programs will have the opportunity to design, create and maintain a secure computer network by utilizing leading-edge technology in their respective learning laboratories.

The School of Nursing houses three classrooms all designed to simulate a hospital and/or health care setting. The registered nursing area features a centralized nurse’s station as well as rooms and wings that surround the station for instructional classroom and hands-on learning. The Nursing Lab features a two West, a two East, an ICU, a Peds/OB Unit and a Nurse’s Station.

Other academic resources include an IV simulation computer program, a med room to prep medications, a classroom, two glass-enclosed skill testing rooms that simulate double occupancy rooms found in hospitals and two student/instructor conference rooms. Additionally, Owens’ School of Nursing will feature classrooms for practical nursing and the College’s human patient simulator technology.

Designed with energy efficiency and conservation in mind, each room’s bank of lights automatically power down after a period of time without detected movement. Abundant glass windows within the main atrium entrance allow more natural light into the complex and reduce the necessity for some electric lighting. The entire facility includes automation heating and air conditioning as well as wireless Internet access. Infrastructure was also added to the existing building for future looping and sharing of district heating.

In addition to the recently completed Heritage Hall renovation project, the College unveiled a refurbished 29,045 square-foot Founders Hall at the former Penta Career Center in January 2010 as part of Owens’ ongoing campus expansion initiative. The $2.6 million Founders Hall building serves as the new home to the College’s Departments of English, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Communications, Humanities and Languages, as well as the Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences. •

Having Fun all Summer long

The Owens Community College Alumni Association

knows a thing or two about having fun. And boy,

did its members have a lot of it this summer. As a

bonus, they raised a tidy sum to support the alumni

scholarship programs and outreach initiatives.

In August, the Association held its

Annual Meeting and Mud hens Night

at the beautiful Fifth third Field. 239

members and their families enjoyed a

game between the toledo Mud hens

and the Indianapolis Indians. the Mud

hens may have lost, but the attendees

didn’t miss out on an evening of fun.

this July, alumni adventurers made their way down the New River Gorge National River, braving rapids, rocks and the

splash of the river with a trusty guide. the whitewater Rafting group had fun on and off the river. In addition to a day of

rafting, the weekend was filled with plenty of activities, including great meals, great socializing, swimming, movies, hikes

and more.

In September, 28 teams came out on a balmy fall day to raise money for the Alumni Association scholarships. The event raised more than $24,000. The event was sponsored by Hylant Group and Hylant Administrative Services this year. Metzgers Printing + Mailing, Toledo Free Press and Ohio Logistics Findlay’s Tall Timbers Distribution Centers served as the print, ad and host sponsors.

The winning foursome this year, Plante & Moran, included Robb Rose, Tom Nemeth, John McDermott and Greg Taylor (pictured at left).

Since 2003, the Golf Classic has netted over $235, 000. The proceeds benefit the Alumni Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Detective Keith Dressel Memorial Scholarship Fund, as well as alumni outreach initiatives.

“I know what it’s like to go without, and it warms my heart to see folks who care so much about the students.”

– ELIZABETH BETHANY, PRINCIPAL ,

REYNOLDS ELEMENTARY

Backpackrecap

Soon after the Alumni Association launched this year’s Backpack to the Future campaign, it became apparent that the need for backpacks and school supplies was greater than ever. The Association worked with community partners Books-A-Million, Walt Churchill’s Market, Great Lakes Credit Union and GenoaBank to collect more than 410 backpacks and more than 8,700 school supply items. This tremendous outpouring of support helped the Alumni Association to deliver much needed supplies to kindergarteners at 22 schools in Lucas, Wood and Hancock counties.

“This community service project was once again a huge success thanks to the support of area residents, local businesses and Owens faculty, staff and students,” said Kaye Koevening, Owens Alumni Association Community Service Chair.

“All children should have the opportunity to begin their school year with new supplies and we are proud to play a small role in making sure that happens.”

As the kindergarten students from the Toledo Public School system, Findlay City Schools, Lake Local Schools, and the Wood County Educational Services system saw the backpacks, crayons, markers, pencils, notebooks, glue bottles, folders and other school supplies arrayed before them, their eyes grew wide with wonder.

“I love to draw and color in school,” said Miles from Walbridge Elementary School. “My favorite color is blue and now I have a blue backpack to put school stuff in.”

“It is such a relief for teachers and parents to know that there are supplies available to help our students throughout the school year,” said Rosemary Rooker, Principal of Northview Primary School in Findlay, Ohio.

“I know what it’s like to go without, and it warms my heart to see folks who care so much about the students. These supplies make a big difference in the children’s self esteem and make them feel like they are just like other kids. It’s a positive start for them,” said Elizabeth Bethany, Principal of Reynolds Elementary.
