The New England Colonies•By 1773, England had 13 colonies that all had a different economy, or way of making money, based on the region

that they were created.•The colonies furthest

north (MA, NH, CT, RI) had trouble farming in cold rocky soil.

New Englanders made ships, created lumber, fished and fur trapped.

The Middle Colonies• The Middle Colonies (NY, PA, NJ, DE) were

rich in natural resources to have sawmills, mines, fish, work metal and good land to grow cash crops like wheat.

• Cash crops are grown in large quantities to be sold for profit instead of personal use. These cash crops turned New York City and Philadelphia into busy port cities.

The Southern Colonies• The Southern colonies (MD, VA, NC, SC, GA), had a

warm climate which was perfect to grow tobacco, rice, indigo and raise cattle.

• The plantations were the large farms that required many workers and slaves to help maintain them.

The Southern Colonies• The farms further inland,

however, would grow only what they needed to feed their families.– Even though there were

more farms than plantations, the plantations owners had more political power.
