In late 2013, The Australian Rhino Project (TARP) was formed with the goal of estab‐lishing a breeding herd of rhinos in Australia as an “Insurance Popula on” in the case of ex nc on of the species in the wild. Poach‐ing rates in South Africa, the home of 98% of the world’s Rhinos, have reached epidemic levels and if not addressed will see rhinos become ex nct in the wild within 10 years. TARP has partnered with the Taronga Con‐serva on Society, the Business School and Veterinary School of the University of Syd‐ney and The Classic Safari Company to make this project a reality. The first rhinos have been iden fied and plans are currently being made to relocate these rhinos to Australia in 2016. The over‐all plan is to import 80 rhino over 4 years from South Africa to establish the breeding herd. When the situa on permits in South Africa, the rhinos will be repatriated to their homeland.
