ABBA Forever: A Celebration NEW! Coming to the August Membership Campaign!

What Happened to My PREVUE?!The unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 disruptions have been felt

worldwide and it seems no facet of life was immune. This, unfortunately, included the distribution of the May/June issue of Prevue. Unpredictable distribution problems delayed the guide getting to you.

That’s where YOU — our loyal Canadian members — stepped up to make the best of an unfortunate situation. We contacted you and many graciously opted to receive the digital-only version, both this time and (many) for all future issues as well. THANK YOU to all who responded to our request!

For those without computers or email, we appreciate your patience as you waited for the printed version to arrive. We know how important Prevue is to you!

We have taken steps to assure we won’t have another significant delay, while doing our best to work around more common systemic delays in the the postal system.

If you find you’d rather receive the guide electronically, please let us know at [email protected]. Thank you for your patience and understanding in these trying times.

FROM THE COVER: Program SponsorsNew Decade…New Unrest…New Villains

Endeavour and his colleagues enter a new decade and era of change. Opening on New Year’s Eve 1969, normal order has been resumed and the team is reunited at Castle Gate CID, with Chief Superintendent Bright back in charge. However, the events of the past year have left their mark: old friendships will be challenged; and new relationships will blossom. Amidst the dawn of women’s liberation, social progression and scientific growth, the 1970s begin for Oxford’s finest with the discovery of a body at the canal towpath on New Year’s Day. With the only clue in the investigation a witness who heard whistling on the night of the crime, the team have their work cut out to uncover their culprit.

Don’t miss the Season 7 premiere: Sunday, Aug. 9 at 8 pm/9 Mtn.

ALSO ON THE COVER —

Last year, Swedish supergroup ABBA celebrated several anniversaries: 50 years since they first met, 40 years since their last concert, and 20 years since the musical Mamma Mia! gave them a second life. ABBA Forever – A Celebration is exactly that: a celebration of the lifetime of joy the group has brought to fans everywhere.

Band members are joned by Neil Sedaka, Donny Osmond and many others to shed light on why and what’s made them a worldwide sensation. The special is slated to air as part of our August Membership Campaign, which begins Saturday, Aug. 29.

From the Board…The past few months have been a challenge. Everything but the bare essentials has been put on hold.

Living a deconstructed life means slowing down and focusing on what is truly important. I am gradually expanding my circle and adding back a few activities. Together we faced a pandemic and now we have an opportunity for a fresh start. Let’s be intentional about how we bring back a healthy community. Together we can make things better than they were before. KSPS PBS is here for you through these difficult times and will be here as we move forward.

Sincerely,

Nancy LedeboerChair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors

At-Home Learning with KSPSIn mid-March, schools in Spokane began to close due the COVID-19 pandemic; and parents and caregivers in our community

honorably took on the difficult task of homeschooling their children. To support caregivers in their new role, KSPS began sharing free Pre-K through Grade 12 standards-based, educational resources — focused on the core content subjects of math, literacy and science — through a daily e-newsletter and a dedicated At-Home Learning website. Resources were curated from: KSPS’s local programs, such as our regional historical documentaries; our job spotlight series Career Explore Northwest; and our financial education series Making Cents. Resources from trusted PBS educational sites such as PBS LearningMedia, PBS Parents and Sesame Street in Communities were also shared.

When families learned that schools would be closed for the remainder of the school year, we were even more committed to provide our daily At-Home Learning service. Through June, we have curated and shared over 500 education resources, filling gaps and supplementing curriculum materials provided by local school districts. Feedback has been positive. “We have always supported KSPS and I actually, rarely, even watch it on TV/Computer. But this has been an amazing resource and REALLY helped during this challenging time. Thank you so much,” said a local caregiver. As the year unfolds, we will continue to work diligently to support caregivers’ and educators’ at-home learning efforts.

To a Decade of One-Hour EscapesFull disclosure — this is NOT the column I planned for this issue of Prevue.

There were so many things I wanted to write about this month; but none of them passed my own test of informative, entertaining, educational, inspirational and — above all (only occasionally) — controversial. Perhaps one day, when things (and I) have calmed down, I’ll share that GM’s note.

In the meantime — to quote Monty Python — and now for something completely different:

The end of an era. After years of laughter, tears, and drama — Downton Abbey on KSPS has rung its last dinner bell.

I’m going to miss the Grantham/Crawleys — not just because Downton is the most popular series in recent PBS history, but because it’s also been a great way to introduce people to all things MASTERPIECE…and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Downton has been the through point for KSPS and PBS for almost a decade. In 2011, Downton won its first Emmy; and 68 nominations and 15 more Emmy awards later…Downton became the Upstairs, Downstairs of a new generation (if you’re not familiar with that program — it’s like Downton, only older and more like the Dowager.)

By the time it reached its end — with weddings, homecomings (and goings) and storylines wrapped up like Mrs. Patmore’s Sunday goose — Downton Abbey became synonymous with PBS. And you’ve enjoyed (and missed) Downton so much that here at KSPS, we’ve replayed the entire series 3 (THREE!) times — weekly and weekend-ly — including June 5th – 8th…with nary a complaint.

Downton resonates because it’s family, friendship, intrigue, history, love, marriage, births and untimely ends (Poor Mr. Pamuk!) Through it all, the cast of Downton Abbey were those visitors you always wanted to invite into your home…and hoped they’d never leave.

Goodbye Downton…thanks for 6 seasons and a lifetime of great memories.

Investments & Partnerships UpdateOver the years, KSPS PBS has been the beneficiary of many generous

donors who included the station in their estate planning. Their gifts help keep the shows you love right where you expect to find them and help to provide the “extras” like educational support to families that need a little extra help and on-air classrooms during the stay-home orders. Luncheon was cancelled this year. KSPS runs on volunteers: stuffing mailings, staffing the front desk, answering phones and so much more. Meet 2020 Volunteer of the Year Virginia Omoto

We are happy to recognize Virginia Omoto as Volunteer of the Year for 2020. This past year, she has said yes to nearly every need we expressed to her. From front desk duties, to events, to production support, to Storytimes to Ambassador events, Virginia kept things running. She started volunteering just a short time ago in April 2019. She had retired from Avista and was already a KSPS PBS member and fan of all KSPS PBS programs; so volunteering here was a great fit for her. We can always count on Virginia for last-minute requests. She’s game to help with anything, Thank you, Virginia, and congratulations on your well-deserved recognition!
