Negative Feedback System

endocrine system gives itself messages to control the production & release of hormones

All homeostatic mechanisms use negative feedback to maintain a constant value ﴾set point﴿

whenever a change occurs in a system, this automatically causes a corrective mechanism to start, which reverses the original change and brings the system back towards the set point

• Plasmids are then incubated with a weakened strain of E. coli• Since only some of the bacteria will take up the plasmid,a gene encoding an enzyme which breaks down a certain antibiotic is also included in the plasmid, which allows bacteria with the plasmid to grow on a plate containing the antibiotic while the other bacteria die. • These bacteria are then allowed to grow and replicate • Plasmid and the insulin gene replicates millions of times • Bacteria are given a signal to produce the protein, and insulin identical to that of humans can be produced • This insulin, is named humulin, can then be used to treat many people with type I diabetes without the worry of allergic reaction.

Aim: How does the endocrine system help the body achieve homeostasis?

Do Now:What is considered to be normal body temperature?

Why do you think that normal body temperature is as high as the temperature on a hot summer day?

Homework: Use pp.1611691. Vocab: Homeostasis, negative feedback, hormone

2.Describe and draw a diagram of a negative feedback system.Include organs if you know them.Do not use an example from class

Nov 249:02 AM

Homeostasis*Goal of the Nervous System + Endocrine system is to achieve homeostasis by regulating the internal environment.*Homestasis maintenance of the internal environment within tolerable limits

*Examples: heart rate, body temperature, water balance, and the secretions of the pituitary gland).

Nov 208:43 AM

Endocrine SystemAlong with the nervous system, it is the bodies control systemHormones are the chemicals (proteins) that are sent through the blood by the organs of the endocrine system have target organs a ductless system, released directly into the blood

Gonads: Ovaries & Testes

TestosteroneEstrogen

Homeostasis A state of balance in the body, maintenance of the internal environment within tolerable limits

''Fight or Flight"

Females & males have both hormones* females have more estrogen *males have more testosterone*Testosterone & Estrogen are responsible for secondary sex characteristics

Reproduction

A. Reproduction & Endocrine System

1. Reproduction is the process that continues life2. The human reproductive system needs hormones to function *Estrogen *Testosterone(There are other hormones)

B. Males1. Sperm cells are produced in the testes, leave through the penis

C. Females1. Egg cells are produced in the ovaries2. If fertilization of egg occurs by a sperm, it can develop in the uterus

D. Menstrual Cycle1. A female's menstrual cycle occurs approx. every 28 days2. If an egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus breaks down is shed in a process called menstruation

Summary

1. Homeostasis is _____________________________________________ and the goal of the endocrine system.

2. The endocrine system releases _______________________.

3. ______________ are chemical messengers that travel through the blood.

4. _______________ are released by the endocrine glands.

5. Negative feedback is when an increase in a _________________ causes the gland to _________ releasing the ________________.

6. Homeostasis is achieved through ______________ feedback.

7. Summarize negative feedback in your own words:
