C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O NThis course will emphasize the most common degenerative diseases

and deformity or scoliosis of the spine: low back pain, neck pain, herniated lumbar and cervical discs with radiculopathy and mylelopathyand spondylosis. The clinical presentation, natural history andmanagement will be discussed in detail along with the rationalsequencing of imaging studies from the plain films to MRI. Theinterpretation of imaging studies will be discussed as well as howto distinguish the trivial from the important in reading the report.Modalities of medical and non-operative treatment for degenerativediseases will be discussed in detail, with particular attention to themanagement of neck and low back pain and lumbar disc disease bynon-surgical specialists and the primary physician. Surgical therapy willbe discussed with an emphasis on indications for surgical management, available treatment modalities, and expected results from surgery.

T A R G E T A U D I E N C EThis one-day course is designed for practicing neurologists,

rheumatologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, internists, primarycare physicians, and orthopaedic surgeons who wish to expand theirknowledge of the non-operative management of spinal disorders.Physical therapists that treat patients with spinal disorders willalso benefit from this course.

S T A T E M E N T O F N E E DManaging patients with degenerative diseases and deformity or

scoliosis of the spine, particularly, degenerative disc disease (DDD)of the spine requires a strong understanding of clinical presentation, history and differential diagnosis. For instance, patients with DDDof the spine require diagnostic tests that necessitate evaluation, interpretation and intervention. Given the new data available affectingthe internal and external evidence used in the diagnosis and treatmentof degenerative diseases of the spine, many physicians and physicaltherapists caring for patients with these back and neck disorders needto be updated in this area of treatment in order to incorporate thisinformation into their practice.

E D U C A T I O N A L O B J E C T I V E S• Describe the most effective diagnostic tests for degenerativedisc disease (DDD) of the spine as well as the techniques used toevaluate and interpret the results to select the most appropriateintervention

• Differentiate between neck pathology from shoulder pathology, and discuss the causes and treatment options for both.

• Identify as part of the treatment protocol when it is appropriateto refer a patient to a physical therapist or medical subspecialty

• Evaluate new non operative and operative treatment strategiesfor lumbar DDD.

• Describe the impact of new diagnostic and treatment techniquesavailable in the area of pediatric scoliosis care.

• Explain the evidence-based goals of non-operative and surgicaltreatment in the treatment of adult scoliosis.

• Describe the new surgical approaches to treating cervical DDD.

• Assess when to order diagnostic tests for patients withosteoporosis and evaluate when – and if – to treat withmedication and/or surgery given new advances in the field.
