ENERGETIC START TO 2014

Renowned for their fun culture, the entire workforce also gathered for the evening to celebrate the business’ 30th anniversary and partied until the early hours.

The energy levels were high in January, where the company worked and partied hard, and that’s been maintained to mid year with lots of activity across the business, details of which you will find in this newsletter.

The sales teams were back to HQ again in March for some up-to-date Relux training with Paul Donegan. The NPD and Technical Teams have been working on some innovative ranges to follow later this year – all of which are now part of the LIA Verification scheme – indeed the LED Group have already had product specifications confirmed and verified on a number of key products to date.

Some of these products alongside the very successful Magnificent Seven Range (TRILED, ETERNITY, SPACE, GOLF, VULCAN, EMERALD AND FRD WITH EMERALD) were displayed at the Frankfurt Light & Build show at the end of March , where we had a two storey stand. Energy was very much the theme at the show – energy saving products but also ours and our customers energy levels were on a high, the show has such a great buzz about it; we returned home tired but happy that we had delivered at the exhibition and the result’s are already evident in new export endeavours.

Also taking place in Ireland in March was the flagship SEAI show. We exhibited and were very happy with the foot-fall and also to be commended on our EMERALD LED Lamp range.

We set out to do 3 things this year:1. Take every opportunity to grow

our business 2. Have strong performing teams

across the business, from NPD, Quality, Marketing to Regional Sales and more

3. To have some fun along the way.

It’s very encouraging coming to the half year mark to say that we are performing very well in each area.

What’s most important to us is that our customers are having the same results and that we are growing together in prosperity and relationships.

Thanks for your continued support, it really is appreciated!

LED GROUP AT LIGHT + BUILD 2014March 2014, LED Group exhibited at Light + Build, Frankfurt, the world’s largest international lighting fair. The show-stopping two storey stand showcased the latest ranges of LED energy saving solutions. The key attractions on the stand were the VULCAN LED Corrosion Proof Retrofit Plate with Magnet-Fix System as well the large display of LED Downlights ranging from the Fire Rated LED Downlight with 4.5W EMERALD lamp to the 38W adjustable WILSON LED Downlight. The market leading SPACE panel in 32W and 45W also proved very popular among the visitors.

LED Group was represented by leading sales personnel from across Europe and the Middle East, members of the New Product Development and Technical teams as well as the Board of Directors who never miss this exciting event which takes place every two years in Frankfurt.

During the six days of the fair 211,500 trade visitors from 161 countries came to Frankfurt to find out about the latest innovations and solutions of the manufacturers taking part. The level of international visitors rose to 47% meaning that almost one in two visitors came from abroad. The best represented visitor nations after Germany were Italy, the Netherlands, France, China and Austria.

LED Group continue to enjoy solid exports growth and to expand the ROBUS range across all markets. This is reflected in the trade stands and the exports team are encouraged to see increased footfall at the show this year also.

ROBUS EMERALD LED LAMP COMMENDED AT SEAI ENERGY SHOW 2014

LED Group are proud to announce that they have been commended for the ROBUS Emerald LED Lamp in the Best Energy Efficient Product category at the Energy Show awards which were held recently at the RDS Dublin.

From left to right: Brian Motherway- Chief Executive of SEAI, Damien Cullen- ROBUS Area Sales Representative and David McAuley- SEAI adjudicator.

The show which ran from the 12th & 13th March saw over 150 companies exhibit and was attended by 3,500 trade visitors. LED Group were among the exhibitors in the EMDA Pavilion, who’s entry was included in the shortlist of finalists for the Energy Show Product of the Show Awards.

The ROBUS LED Emerald Lamp was commended based on its high energy savings, low energy consumption and extra long life. The Emerald LED lamp available in 3.5W, 4.5W, 5W dimmable and 8W, has a 30,000 hour lamp life

lasting up to 15 times longer than traditional 35/50W halogens producing up to 90% energy savings. The LED lamps utilises chip-on-board (COB) technology to provide energy efficient and long life solutions to replace inefficient short life halogen lamps.

COB LED’s produce more light and less heat, inevitably having a longer life with less performance depreciation than a single larger LED of the same input power. Suitable for retrofitting, the Emerald LED Lamp is Part L1 and L2 Compliant.

ROBUS 2014 SALES AND MARKETING CONFERENCE

The LED Group started 2014 with a jam packed Sales and Marketing Conference that also saw the company celebrate 30 years in business and the launch of a new catalogue.

100 employees gathered at the ROBUS Visitor Centre at the LED Group headquarters in Dublin for the event on Jan 31st. Michael Slein, the company founder gave an introductory talk around innovation and how the ROBUS brand has evolved and continues to innovate. The audience agreed that the jam packed sales and marketing agenda was indicative of the growing strength of the brand and the global scale of the business today.

Since 1984 the LED Group have continually invested in new technology, experienced staff and most importantly long-term partnerships with stockists, evolving into a market leading company. In fact, the conference was attended by leading sales personnel from across Europe and the Middle East.

NPD Manager, Claire Mahony discussed the new ranges of LED products including the new 10W SMD LED GOLF which comes with the innovative Pro-Diffuser as well as the new EMERALD LED lamp range which utilises Chip-On-Board

technology. With ROBUS boldly leading the way with LED retrofit solutions, the successful VULCAN Corrosion Proof now also includes the VULCAN LED Retrofit which is a Magnet-Fix system with a unique design that works with the majority of manufacturer’s standard corrosion proof fittings.

Deirdre Howard, Group Marketing Manager launched the much anticipated 2014 Catalogue which continues the ROBUS trend of being ahead of the market in terms of design and usability.

The new 240 page catalogue takes on a sophisticated look and feel with much emphasis on product imagery, associated installation images and quality procedures at the LED Group. With 30 years experience in the lighting industry, having been one of the first companies to manufacture in China, and with 15 years experience in LED lighting specifically, the ROBUS brand is established, qualified, reputable and trusted.

ROBUS ETERNITY IS LIA VERIFIED

In today’s competitive market, the lighting industry is full of confusion as a result of inflated claims from some brands with regard to colour stability, efficiency, lumen output and reliability. Can you be certain that the claimed specification of a product is accurate, true and realistic? Or that the product is inherently safe? Well, now you can. The LIA Laboratories offer the opportunity to have product safety and performance confirmed and verified to EU standards and regulations via the LIA Verified Scheme.

LED Group is proud to announce that the ROBUS Eternity LED Downlight is the first ever product listed and approved on the LIA Laboratories website under the LIA Verified Scheme. Always ahead of the curve, the ROBUS Technical team will shortly announce verification of the full range of ROBUS Magnificent 7 products which is taking the UK and Ireland by storm (TRILED Fire Rated Downlight, SPACE Panel Light, GOLF, VULCAN Corrosion Proof, EMERALD LED lamps and lots more).

The ROBUS Eternity LED Downlight is a sleek replacement for 2x18W and 2x26W PL downlights, designed to offer greater flexibility and suit modern building designs. The shallow recessed Eternity fittings utilise high quality SMD LEDs with excellent lifetime characteristics, which can be up to 10 times longer than standard compact fluorescent PL lamps.

The Eternity range provides energy savings on running costs in excess of 50% when compared to PL equivalents. Log on to http://www.lialabcert.org.uk/ to view the full test report.

The LIA Verified Scheme independently verifies the safety, and performance of LED lamps and luminaires against the manufacturer’s performance claims. The scheme firstly verifies safety to European standards,

followed by initial “ p e r f o r m a n c e verification” of manufac turer ’s s p e c i f i c a t i o n claims, and then “life” verification to 2000 hours

The “life” verification test works to highlight any early failures and demonstrate that the product under test is on target to meet lifetime claims.

The Verified Scheme is totally independent and operates in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, which permits the use of its product approval branding on all compliant products. The scheme is the only such UK scheme to carry the endorsement of the EST. The ROBUS Eternity is now listed on the new dedicated website, where end users and lighting professionals can quickly and easily source information on it. LED Group will issue further updates as and when additional ROBUS products are approved.

ROBUS & RELUXLED Group continuously invest in its highly experienced staff and the ROBUS sales team are passionate and driven when it comes to delivering excellent results. To ensure they can provide value added service to customers the team attended another RELUX training day in March to keep their skills fresh.

RELUX has been at the forefront of professional light planning software solutions and many lighting planners have been using this software due to its intuitive user interface, realistic visualization, efficient product data access and accurate calculations. Paul Donegan MSc Light & Lighting is responsible for the ongoing training with the ROBUS teams.

ROBUS sales teams work proactively with their wholesale customers, conducting joint visits and producing sales tenders and lighting designs for projects.

ROBUS MEASURE’S UP

But all LED Lighting is not the same. Over the past 30 years, LED Group ROBUS have continually invested in new technology and although upfront investment in LED technology is higher, how do you know if the LED’s you are buying are good quality or suitable for purpose?

LED Group ROBUS give their customers proof of ROBUS lighting performance by conducting in-house as well as external testing. In-house reliability tests are carried out on an integrating sphere measurement system, an investment by ROBUS which can be viewed in the impressive visitor & conference centre at the LED Group headquarters in Dublin. This facility is available for wholesaler and contractor visits, events and training – accommodating groups of up to 50 people. An impressive bright spacious showroom with natural light, it gives customers an overview of the ROBUS range, quality control processes, LED technology training and the testing facility.

The integrating sphere has a massive 1.5m diameter, making it suitable for testing luminaires of up to 1m in length. Measurement accuracy is achieved and maintained through the use of a calibrated lamp, traceable to international standards. The equipment forms a critical part in the ROBUS product approval process in ensuring that a product is meeting the required performance parameters.

The measurement parameters are:• Luminous Flux – Total (usable)

lumens, describing how ‘bright’ the fitting is.

• Luminaire Efficacy – Lumens per Watt, a measure of efficiency.

• CCT - Correlated Colour Temperature, describing the light colour and appearance (e.g. 4000K cool white).

• CRI – Colour Rendering Index is a measure of how well the light reproduces the real colours of illuminated objects

LED lighting boasts many advantages; energy efficiency, low maintenance, long life and ease of installation to name a few.

LUX REVIEW AUSTRALIA

LED Group Global SuccessLED Group has recently featured in the first issue of LUX Review Australia where a case study detailed how the installation of 29 x 200W Hat Induction Highbay Lamps saved Wesley Linen Services over $6,500 per annum and prevents the emission of 16 tonnes of CO2 a year.

In the interview, Peter Matthews, Manager explains “When we weighed everything up, including the total lifecycle cost over time, return on investment, reduction in carbon emissions and improved power factor, the ROBUS induction Highbay was the choice for us”.

LED Group are growing from strength to strength in Australia as they continue to expand their experienced sales team and prepare to launch the new 2014/2015 Australian catalogue which features a new and exciting range of innovative products.

What I BelIeve Peter Matthews

When we weighed everything up, induction was the choice for us over LEDs”

‘‘ We needed to replace our mercury vapour and sodium lighting Our business employs around 85 staff with an annual turnover of $8.5 million, processing on average 85,000 kg of hospital-based linen for approximately 150 customers. The problem we had with our existing lighting was that the light output from mercury vapour and sodium decays over time. We had to relamp the installation every year. When we did some measurements with a lux meter, we found that lux levels at the linen processing stations were well below Australian standards.

Reliability and maintenance are critical It’s essential that our linen hire service is available on time all the time. Our mix of mercury vapour and high-pressure sodium units didn’t give me reliability over time. We couldn’t maintain them during normal production hours because of their location, which meant having to get contractors in after hours and on weekends at great expense.

It was LED versus induction lampsWe were aware that new technology was available including LEDs and induction lamps. We had some discussions with our local electrical wholesaler and got samples of both technologies, installing them in two key areas where we could measure the performance and also get feedback from staff. Input from staff was important because I wanted to ensure there were no issues with the colour of the light, flickering and so on.Staff were put off by ‘bright’ LED lightWe ended up choosing the induction lamp option, mainly because our staff told us that while the light output of the LED lamps was sufficient, they felt their eyes were ‘drawn into’ the lamps, leaving them with the impression of a burning mark on their eyes.

They said it was like looking into a very bright lamp, so that for a while their eyesight was blurred. I couldn’t have staff experiencing that sort of issue.

The induction lamps will last for longerThe other factor was that during the costing process we found the LED option was around 25 per cent dearer, and didn’t have the longevity of the induction product. The Roben 200W induction lamps are guaranteed for 100,000 hours, which will see me out. Also, induction offered us about 1.2 years return on investment, while LED was about two years. When we weighed

everything up, including the total lifecycle cost over time, return on investment, reduction in carbon emissions and improved power factor, induction was the choice for us.

Staff appreciate the whiteness and uniformity of the lightingAfter five months we’ve not had any issues. Staff have commented on how the light in the plant is all the same whiteness, unlike the variation in colour we had with the previous lamps. Time will be the judge in terms of whether the induction lamp was a good decision, but so far I’m impressed with the light output – it’s very consistent.

Better lighting benefits an ageing workforceIt’s difficult to quantify the improvement in productivity, but I’d say the consistency of the lighting through the work stations has helped people to be more thorough in their inspections. The number of complaints about quality is certainly dropping. That’s not entirely attributable to the lighting upgrade, but it’s made the staff’s task a little bit easier because they can now see properly – and with an ageing workforce, that is something we have to consider.

It’s important to trial products and involve your staffMy advice when upgrading lighting in warehouses and factories? Start by measuring your current light levels and whether they are suitable for your processes. Then you need to research your options – the internet is very useful. We were given the opportunity to trial lamps and that proved extremely helpful. It also gave the staff some input into the process.

We’re also in the process of improving our plant’s power factorEnergy efficiency is a significant cost factor, particularly in keeping us ahead of the opposition. We’re currently researching ways to improve the power factor for our plant, and I’m hoping we’ll have a solution in place within 12 months. Laundry equipment uses a lot of motors, and as a result you don’t have 100 per cent efficient use of the power. We’re achieving about 79 per cent, which means we’re effectively buying 100 units of electricity but only using 79. There is smart gear you can purchase that brings that efficiency up to around 96 per cent, so that’s where we’ll head. Generally there’s a return on investment of one to two years, so it’s a good financial opportunity.

Melbourne. the lighting scheme, designed by Electrolight,

transforms the 19.5m-tall structure into a beacon visible from

the town centre. the arcDot is a super-bright Cree MC-E rGBW

multichip-based lED pixel fixture with an iP67 rating for good

weather resistance.

NUMBer oNe BLIGH street, sYDNeY the Building Council

of australia has awarded a 6 Green star Office Design v2

certificate to Number One Bligh street, a 28-storey office tower

in sydney’s financial hub. the office space is behind a double-

skin façade that surrounds a 135m-high naturally ventilated

glass atrium. lighting throughout the 350 perimeter offices is

controlled by CP’s MWs5 microwave detectors. MWs5 makes

absence detection and daylight harvesting possible, dimming to

keep lux levels constant when there is sufficient daylight.

this outlet in Rundle Place, Adelaide, was to illuminate the iconic store

as efficiently as possible, while lighting the stock to attract customers.

Aglo Systems worked as the lighting designers and suppliers in

conjunction with the store designers, Red Design Group. The store

covers 9,000m 2 and consumption had to be kept to 22W/m 2. Harris

Scarfe chose to go with the LED option and has created one of the

largest retail stores in the world to be illuminated primarily with LED.

pendants in the shape of diamonds for the retail area. in the

café, suspended rectangular frames of black powder-coated bars

are hung with spotlights to throw accent light onto the silver-

topped tables. the main feature in the dining area is a sandstone

This factory needed a lighting upgrade, and

a retrofit product had to be found that would

save energy. After trials

of LED, metal halide and

induction units, bosses

chose to install 29 200W

high-bay induction lamps

from Robus. ‘A lighting

plan was developed and

payback calculations provided,’ says Wesley

Linens manager Peter Matthews. ‘Installation

was straighforward with

each lamp pre-wired for

local supply voltage. The

advantage of this lamp

over other technology is

that there is an extensive

operating life with little

drop-off in light intensity

over that life. Labour savings are also expected

as a result of minimal maintenance activity.’

The installation saves the

company over $6,500 and

prevents the emission of 16

tonnes of CO2 a year.
