Shropshire Golf Satellite Club Named Best in West Midlands

A community sports satellite club based in Shropshire Golf Club has been named as the best in the West Midlands after inspiring young people to get into and continue playing sport.

The satellite club delivered by Mark Shervill has brought Golf into the heart of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, Brian LaCroix (Behavior manager at Sutherlands School) saw a real need to get children that he had been working closely with into sport. So after a meeting with Energize, the Golf satellite was launched, inspiring hard to reach children into sport.

Using £49 million of National Lottery funding, more than 6,900 satellite clubs have been established across England, helping to get almost 300,000 young people into sport since 2012. By 2017, every secondary school in England will have been offered a satellite community sports club on its site.

At the Shropshire Golf Satellite Club, more than 50 young people have regularly attended and continued to play sport within the last year. 12-year-old Bailey, who lives in Telford, said: "The Golf satellite club is fantastic as I had never played golf before and I now think I’m very good. I have started to concentrate more and have really focused in sport, school and home.”

Sport England’s Director for Community Sport, Mike Diaper, said: “I’m delighted that The Shropshire Golf Satellite Club has won this regional award. They’ve created a formidable pathway to help get young people in their community more involved in sport.”

Tips to promote your organisation

Promoting your organisation is closely linked to a successful funding strategy. As part of Energize’s Funding Roadshow on Tuesday 17th November, Hannah Hambleton, a mentor at sported, will host a workshop with tips on how to promote yourself.

Telling the story of your project or organisation is really important for funding applications and to create newsworthy pieces. The value of our work in the sector is immediately apparent to many of us, but capturing this can take some skill and time. Does your organisation’s activities fill a unique niche in your area - is this widely known in your local community, as well as your challenges and future plans? Hannah will also talk about fundraising and sponsorship. Hannah has worked for 10 years in the marketing industry and is now a sported mentor, working with sports clubs to develop business plans and funding strategies and understands how promotion fits within both of these. Following a degree in Psychology, Hannah has managed a variety of marketing campaigns for national charities where promotion is key to fundraising success- including PDSA and The Churches Conservation Trust. Hannah is now a marketing consultant for charities and small businesses.

Our funding Roadshow is Tuesday 17th November at the Telford Whitehouse Hotel. Admission is £22pp, including all workshops, refreshments and lunch. Click here to book now Delegates from our Women Make Sport Conference receive a 20% discount, contact [email protected] to redeem this.

Reach, a new campaign focussing on women in coaching has been officially launched by sports coach UK today. Reach has been created to raise awareness and inspire more women to get into coaching as well as encourage current women coaches to develop their skills further. County Sports Partnerships in the West Midlands are also going a step further, launching their Women Make Coaching initiative earlier this year to help women start, develop or enhance their coaching journey. Contact Elliot Pottinger, Coaching & Volunteering Manager at Energize for further information; [email protected] or call 01743 297191. Targeting women of all ages and backgrounds; Reach reinforces the messages that coaching keeps you active, can be a sociable activity and is a way of giving back to your community and sport. All this whilst being a role model to encourage others into sport. The campaign has been created because women are currently under-represented in coaching. Research has shown that women do want to coach, providing the environment is right. However, sport is still regarded as a gendered activity which strongly favours men. Join the Reach campaign, find information and tips on how you can get involved by visiting: www.reachintocoaching.co.uk View the full news item

It is recommended by Sport England, both as champions of sport but also as statutory planning consultees in respect of outdoor sports facilities and playing fields, that all local authorities should have an up to date and robust Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) to ensure there is a sufficient supply of quality playing pitches to meet the sporting needs of local communities now and in the future. A new draft Playing Pitch Strategy (2015 - 2026) for the borough has been produced using the latest Sport England methodology. The strategy analyses current and future supply and demand for grass and artificial pitches for five key sports: • football • rugby union • rugby league • cricket • hockey

The draft PPS will set a framework within which the Council, its partners, stakeholders, sports clubs and the community can work together to make improvements to playing pitches in the Borough. The overall aims of the draft strategy are to protect and enhance levels of outdoor sports facilities, address issues of quality and management, maximise the number of outdoor facilities in Telford and Wrekin and increase investment. The draft PPS consultation which takes place from 25 October - 30 November 2015 aims to get views from stakeholders, local clubs and the community. For more information

Reminder If a CASC no longer meets the conditions introduced on 1 April 2015 Between 1 April 2015 to 1 April 2016 all registered CASCs need to consider whether they meet all the new eligibility rules introduced on 1 April 2015. The conditions for being a CASC are explained in Chapter 1. If a registered CASC doesn’t meet the new rules they have until 1 April 2016 to make any changes needed. Some clubs won’t be able to make the changes needed to keep their CASC status, or the club’s members may decide that they don’t want to make the changes required. These clubs should write to HMRC as soon as possible explaining that the Club doesn’t meet the new conditions of being a CASC. See Charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs for the address. If HMRC is satisfied that your club has always been compliant with the CASC rules (before the changes on 1 April 2015) then the club’s deregistration date will be 1 April 2016. There will be no deregistration or exit charge on the club. If a club has not met the CASC rules for many years (e.g., they have never been ‘open to all’) then HMRC will backdate deregistration to the appropriate date and a charge to CT [Capital gains Tax] may apply (loss of any CASC reliefs and a deregistration charge based on the assets held by the club). We also heard from Kitrina Douglas, Director of the Boomerang Project, who gave us an insight into her research which explores identity development, physical activity and mental health through narrative informed methodologies. Consultant Psychiatrist, Alan Currie, spoke to the audience about strategies to manage mental health problems and the similarities to dealing with physical health problems.............. The Ramblers has this week responded to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s public consultation for their new sports strategy. At the heart of the Ramblers’ response is a call for walking to become central to tackling physical inactivity – as an easy, accessible, sustainable and inexpensive exercise. Walking for Health scheme coordinators were asked to provide examples of good practice, relating to the themes of participation, physical activity, and fairness and equality. The fantastic submissions received from schemes across the country helped to demonstrate how walking can improve the nation’s physical and mental health, boost social activity, increase volunteering and reach those who most need to get or stay fit. StreetGames has published new research looking at how best to drive participation in sport amongst young women in the years to come. It appears that sports organisations who fail to recognise the key role that female friendships play in encouraging girls to take part in sport will struggle to attract young women. Key findings from the research include: 63% of young women say they wont play sport or exercise without a friend by their side. Over three quarters (77%) of young women said the number one reason for playing sport would be to catch up with their friends. Click here to view

The Tudor Trust is an independent grant-making charitable trust which supports organisations working in any part of the UK. You don’t have to be a registered charity to apply, they fund a range of non-profit organisations, apart from statutory organisations, schools, colleges and universities. As they try to respond to the needs identified by organisations, many grants are for core funding: funding which goes towards the core costs of running an organisation, including salaries, overheads and day-to-day running costs. They can also provide project grants, capital grants for buildings or equipment. There is no maximum or minimum you can apply for. Their priorities are; • Organisations working with people who are at the margins of society • A focus on building stronger communities by overcoming isolation and

fragmentation and encouraging inclusion, connection and integration • Organisations which are embedded in their community and which can

identify and channel the potential within that community • Organisations which can demonstrate that they listen to and are

responsive to their users • Organisations which are thoughtful in their use of resources and which

Every week, sports facilities across England play a fundamental role in helping millions of people enjoy being active. It's the roofs on the club houses, the boilers that make the showers piping hot and the floodlights that make winter sport possible that make a difference. Inspired Facilities fund has made it possible for almost 2000 sports clubs to make major improvements to their facilities, some of which were decades old and risked driving members away if not modernised. Sport England are currently developing our their strategy to support grassroots sport for 2016-2021. They have decided to pause their Inspired Facilities fund from Monday 11 January 2016, to make sure any future facilities funding is fully integrated into, and supports, their new strategy and priorities.
