Slovenské elektrárne, a subsid-iary of the Enel Group, opened an exceptional information

centre - Energoland - located in front of the entrance to Mochovce NPP on 14 October. The project equipped with the latest interactive and display technologies provides an attractive insight into the power world story for all visitors, from the beginning of the universe up to the near future.

“Our goal was to use an attractive form for the complete understanding of the occurrence, generation and use of energy. We paid special attention to the global warming phenomenon and carbon footprint left by mankind

on our planet,” said Mr. Michele Bolo-gna, Manager of the SE External Rela-tionships division. Energoland offers 33 interactive sections accompanied throughout by a virtual guide. Each visitor can get information about his/her own energy on a large thermal mirror at the entrance. The exhibi-tion continues with a power race on an interactive LED floor. More ener-gy can be gained while watching the Energy Odyssey in a  free 3D cine-ma with 20 seats. The Time Machine section will show visitors the energy kinds used in the past, and how the fight for survival helped to increase the Earth´s population. The exhibi-

tion section Watts informs visitors of the energy volume needed to supply various appliances – from a mobile phone to a space shuttle. The project authors have also devel-oped several interactive topic games. In the game “Power grid opera-tor” players must supply power to a city and prevent the grid’s collapse – a blackout. Energopolis is anoth-er strategic game aimed at building a city and the power plants supplying the power needed for its life. A super motorbike is another attraction. It will take players to the past, and they have to give correct answers to quiz questions to pass to the next level.

A special exhibition part is dedicat-ed to nuclear engineering. It also includes a special inflatable dome – the first of its kind in the world. It represents the nuclear power plant’s protective sheathing, i.e. the contain-ment. Walking up the “uranium” stairs will provide visitors with all the important information regard-ing NPP operation. ENERGOLAND MOCHOVCE – WHAT YOU DON´T KNOW ABOUT IT

The new information and training centre is completely innovative starting from the design up to the

materials and technologies. The building has top power efficiency A1. Mr. Róbert Holý, coordinator of the Energoland expo-sition provided more information about the project.

When did the planning of the new information centre start? Was it includ-ed in the MO34 project? We wanted to build a new information centre before Mochovce NPP units 1&2 commissioning. We had prepared studies, and the project as well. However, funding became available only after SE´s acquisi-tion by Enel.Naturally, MO34 construction helped this project come to life. However, the new Energoland is not a direct part of the MO34 project. The idea started to be implemented in 2009. We started work-ing on the design with the tender winner. The civil part was managed by Mr. Július Kliman from Engineering. Together with our colleagues from the External Relation-ships Unit – Miro Sarišský, Juraj Kopřiva and Martina Žemberová – we established a project team to start collecting data and work on Energoland’s content. We found

inspiration in museums and nuclear infor-mation centres in Great Britain, Finland, France, and Switzerland. We didn’t want to focus solely on nuclear in our information centre. The aim was to cover the complete production source spectrum, not only electricity, starting from the birth of the universe and formation of fast elements, birth of civilisations, industrial revolution, population explosion, the present empha-sizing renewable sources and carbon emis-sions, up to future fusion reactors.

What are the IC’s opening hours and when can we visit?Visitors can come every workday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In the case of larger groups, we can also organize visits outside workdays. Individual visitors (groups up to 7 persons) can come at any time, even without advanced reservation. However, larger groups should make a reservation on the website energoland.sk or seas.sk using the reservation system. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee their admission to Energoland due to capac-ity reasons.

Does the IC have an on-line solution? The website www.energoland.sk will contain increasingly more information

about the information centre, including reservation options to visit Energoland and Mochovce NPP.

How many visitors can Energoland take? The capacity of the information centre was designed to accommodate a full bus, i.e. approx. 45 persons. We have approx. 4 – 5 buses in 1.5 hour intervals every day.

Who designed individual sections? The building design was prepared by Ing. Arch. Viktor Šabík (BARAK Architekti), who, in cooperation with QEX and Ital-ian designer Mr. Simone Piermario, also designed the Energoland interior.

What is the main target group of the IC? What activities do you plan here? The new Energoland was designed main-ly for the young generation – students of primary, secondary schools and universi-ties, who represent 90 per cent of our visi-tors. As our power story aimed to attract namely this age group, Energoland is full of the latest interactive technologies. However, it’s also attractive for other age groups. Information is structured so that each visitor can find what´s of most inter-est. (r)

A motorbike drive, including knowledge quiz, is one of the top attractions

Because Slovenské elektrárne supports many innovative projects and solutions, our ambition – with Energoland – is to become not only a power information centre, but

also an innovative centre of this region. We plan various workshops and exhibitions of work by young talents in various cultural,

scientific, technical and environmental protection areas in the future.

LARGE CONSTRUCTION – MANY CHALLENGES

Evolutionary project, the first power plant of its kind, one of the biggest workplaces in

Europe – these were the attributes given to the power plant under construction by Mr. Giancarlo Aquilanti, its Project Director, during a  meeting with the press on 7 October in the Mochovce information and training centre. The event was also attended by Mr. Luca D´Agnese, the General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Slovenské elektrárne. “We have 5,200 people on site and have implemented many safety measures,” said Mr. Aqui-lanti.Construction of units 3 and 4 also means the implementation of new safety and technological improvements. “We prepared one hundred thousand new design documents, worked on by one thousand full-time specialised design-ers. We took additional preventive actions to overcome extreme conditions, e.g. severe accident management. We

performed stress tests and implement-ed lessons learnt into the project, thus ensuring its resistance against long-term power supply loss. We also built a new safety, control and monitoring system. We are speaking of 170 design changes in total (period 2009 – 2014),” added Mr. Aquilanti. Implementation of all new components should be complet-ed this year.Construction of the units required a long preparation period and signifi-cant design revision.

“We couldn’t copy Units 1 and 2, as this is a different, new project,” he added. Construction progress was also affected by lack of nuclear professionals, as there has been no similar project in Slovakia for the last 15 years.Unit 3 is completed to 80%, and the commissioning process has already started. Commercial operation should start in the third quarter of 2016. Unit 4 is completed to 60% and should be put into operation in 2017.

MO34 is a strategic project both for SE and Slovakia. It has significant direct, indirect and induced economic benefits, and is also the guarantee of Slovakia´s energy self-sufficiency, renewal of industrial infrastructure, carbon-free production, and scientific and research development. The share of individual countries in contracts is 54% from Slovakia, 21% from the Czech Republic and one tenth from Italy.Based on time schedule, the MO34 proj-ect is being implemented better than the other two projects in Europe.Investments in SE from 2006 to 2013 reached approx. EUR 3.29 billion. “The sum reached approx. EUR 645 million last year,” said Mr. D´Agnese.Approval of the new MO34 budget is necessary to prevent further delays, costs and project risk - this was the conclusion of the event that also includ-ed a visit of the units. Števo Švolik

Sl o v e n s k é e l e k t r á r n e , a  subsidiary of the Enel group, received a  permit

from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Repub-lic to start the professional prep-aration of Mochovce NPP units 3 & 4 control room personnel on 3 October. Construction of the MO34 simulator building located inside the guarded area of Mochovce NPP, was completed on 20 January 2014. The U.S. company GSE Power Systems was the main hardware and software supplier for the full-scope simulator (computers, soft-ware, instructor´s stations and workstations, panels and boards), supported by several sub-suppli-ers, including Areva Siemens. The simulator is a true copy of unit 3. The facility was put into perma-nent operation this March after an in-depth two-year test period. The simulator training is one of the phases of control room personnel

Start of simulator training for Mochovce NPP units 3 & 4

Construction of Mochovce NPP units 3 and 4 must be the priority for everyone. This is the statement of Mr. Róbert Fico, Slovak

Prime Minister, at the government meeting in Žilina on 8 October. “It is one of the largest

investments in Central Europe in this difficult period. There are many people working on this project, it is a huge construction site,

and if we manage to access the north-south interconnection of grids… Today, there is a huge market especially in the Balkans

needing electricity, and whoever produces it on its own territory will become an exceptionally

strong player in the European area.”

training, aimed at practical knowl-edge for the technological process management under normal and even emergency conditions. The four-week training is managed by lecturers, former experienced operators, who gained their knowl-edge also by leading training on the simulator of operated units. Those being prepared for MO34 operator positions are operators with several-years’ experience from Mochovce NPP units 1 and 2.Thus, Slovenské elektrárne contin-ues to fulfil the requirements defined in the Atomic Act, i.e. to prepare a sufficient number of qual-ified persons needed to commission this future nuclear installation. SAFETY – THE TOP PRIORITY

Safety culture and constant improvement, implementation of the best international practice,

proactive approach to work and success-ful implementation of many projects (e.g. the human factor reliability programme, equipment reliability programme, excel-lent performance programme) brought deserved success to Slovenské elektrárne also worldwide. Namely, we reached the first position on the world chart of the UCLF indicator for 2011 – 2013. This

coefficient provides information about unplanned unit power decrease, i.e. the rate of unplanned outages of reactor units caused by, e.g. unplanned mainte-nance, tests, repairs of equipment, exten-sion of general outages of the units, etc., i.e. how safely and reliably our nuclear reactors can be operated. SE reached the 3-year average UCLF factor of only 0.2% for all four operated units (Mochovce 1&2 and Bohunice 3&4)!Congratulations! We believe that our

approach to constant improvement will result in the improved operational safe-ty and reliability of our power plants to maintain the trust of our supervisory bodies, employees, and population of the surrounding regions and the Slovak public.Top place is proof of our correct course of action, and it is also our motivation to continue searching for new and new solu-tions resulting in safety improvement in coming years. Štefan Hajdú, Michal Vlčko

Slovenské elektrárne expects approx. EUR 5.2 billion contribution of

Mochovce NPP units 3&4 construction to the gross national product of the Slovak Republic, and

EUR 550 million to public finances in the form of taxes and charges. The Mochovce project will have a positive impact on the employment

of 9,400 persons – either directly or indirectly.

COMPLETION OF PLANNED REFUELLING OUTAGE OF MOCHOVCE NPP UNIT 2

Slovenské elektrárne, a subsidiary of the Enel Group, finished Mochov-ce NPP Unit 2 general outage on

28 October by re-phasing the generators to the electric grid. This mid-term outa-ge took a  longer time than usual, and was the last outage of this year´s plan-ned general outages of Slovak nuclear power plants. The mid-term outage was exceptional because of the external reac-tor pressure vessel inspection performed once every 8 years.Outages and repairs form a standard part

of the lifetime of each power plant and are a  long-planned process. Preparati-on of every outage starts 20 months in advance. It was already the 13th general outage of Unit 2 since its commissioning. This one included complete fuel and reactor inter-nals removal from the core, due to the adding of another core cooling system. The most important investment projects implemented during the outage inclu-ded improvements for severe accident management (primary circuit depressu-

rization, vacuum breaker in the contain-ment, emergency coolant and electricity sources, heat removal from the prima-ry circuit) and post-Fukushima measu-res (mobile feedwater sources for steam generators). Fuelling of fresh fuel, completion of reac-tor assembly, and planned maintenan-ce activities on systems and equipment and their testing were followed by unit heating and subsequent primary circuit pressure testing. Števo Švolík

„A new budget for unit 3 and 4 must be approved in order to prevent the endangering of such an important project.”

Luca D´Agnese, CEO of Slovenské elektrárne, a subsidiary of the Enel Group

WE SUCCEEDED IN THE EUROPEAN “GOOD PRACTICE”CONTEST

The third week of October was the European Safety and Occupation-al Health and Safety Week. This

focused on the management of work-related stress, and is the main point of the “Healthy workplace” campaign. Healthy workplaces also include the Mochovce NPP units 3&4 site, which was also appreciated and awarded by the European Occupation-al Health and Safety Agency (EU-OSHA). The prize for “Good practice” – third place – was accepted by Mr. Marek Rolinec, Health and Safety Manager of Slovenské elek-trárne.

Inspiration for other companiesThe campaign “Healthy stress-free work-places” continues throughout 2014 and 2015, and its first year is connected with the organization of various contests. Good practice is one with the involvement of Slovak companies. “These should be specific measures implemented by compa-nies at their workplaces to eliminate stress,” explains Ms. Jarmila Štieberová from the EU-OSHA National Contact Place. “An example of good practice, some inno

vation introduced by a company for its employees to feel better and less stressed. The goal is to provide a good example also for other companies.” Assessed measures must be applicable also practically, not only theo-retically, should be up to date, sustainable, and serve as inspiration for other companies as well, she stressed.

Preventive examinations above the legislative scopeSE also pays proper attention to psychologi-cal-social risks. Many measures aimed at the establishment of suitable working conditions for workers and lowering stress were adopt-

ed for the Mochovce NPP units 3&4 site. And these activities were awarded third place on 21 October in Bratislava. The prize was accept-ed by Mr. Marek Rolinec, SE representative.

“Fatal consequences are often caused by the stress of workers and their psychologi-cal discomfort, and these are problems to fight against,” he said. “There are many prac-tical activities, including interactive train-ings of employees, and medical healthcare above the legislative scope; we also try to improve employer – employee communi-cation (including contractors) with various campaigns – either amusing or those pointing out the consequences of hazardous behaviour showing people what could happen if they don´t work safely.”MO34 cooperates with a psychologist special-ized in stress who assists managers in its control. Specialized activities are organized, e.g., the Fruit day and Nice smile, focused on strengthening health; employees have many preventive medical examinations, and there is a 24/7 medical service with doctor on site. Slovenské elektrárne, together with U.S. Steel and Slovnaft, will accept their awards in April 2015 in Latvia. (zb)
