Medium-voltage arresters for covered conductor overhead lines:CLX

Customers today, have very highrequirements for reliability and they arenot prepared to accept power interrup-tions in general and particularly anywhich might exceed one hour duration.

CLX is designed to use as a lightningprotection in overhead lines with cov-ered conductors. In a case of surge onthe network due to lightning, thepower arc tends to be concentrated atone position along the conductor closeto the insulator. This generally leads tocomplete burn down and dropping ofthe conductor, which can cause a realthreat to the public. CLX guides thelightning discharge current ground, prevents the insulator from flashingover and stops the high energy of thepower frequency follow-on current.

This makes it attractive also for bareconductor distribution systems. Even incase of accidental bridging CLX willnot cause a phase-to-ground fault. The CLX device contains a Metal OxideResistive Element and an externalseries gap to isolate the Metal OxideResistive Element (MORE) from thesystem. The CLX device is installednext to the line / post insulators andcan be adapted to the system. Theseries gap is adjustable using variousbrackets, electrodes and connectors.

Tyco Electronics Energy Division offersengineering support to optimize theuse of CLX.

Without CLXLightning protection with arcing horns. In case of lightning overvoltage, burn-ing arc leads to permanent tripping out of a line.

With CLXMORE stops follow on current within a half cycle of power – frequency voltageand prevents the line from outage.

Medium-voltage arresters for indoor applications:RDA, SPA, CPA and MPA

Our indoor arresters are designed to allow installation of the arresters under the restricted space conditions typicallyfound in switchgear and transformer applications.

The SPA is a compact arrester withhigh mechanical strength. The housingmaterial is fully track resistant andable to provide flashover resistance indamp indoor conditions.

Gas insulated switchgear with RDAarrester and RICS adapter.

High-voltage cable sheath protectionsystem CPA Designed to the specific requirementsin cable sheath protection.

The SPA type arrester is also availablewith a thick-wall insulated, integratedline lead (SPA-I), which allows reduc-ing considerably the clearancesbetween the arresters and earth. SPA-Iarresters are the ideal solution forretrofitting switchgear with arresters. The line lead is available in lengths of250 mm, 500 mm and 750 mm.

Modern gas-insulated switchgearconnected to combined undergroundand overhead distribution networksare sensitive to effects like transientvoltage doubling. An arrester installedright at the cable end will clamp thevoltage to a level which does not putthe switchgear at risk.

CPA arresters installed in a cubicle toprotect HV cable sheath cross bonds.A robust, non tracking housing plusthe high energy handling capabilitiesof the Raychem arrester family makeit the ideal choice for the designer.

For motor-connection boxesMPA typeDesigned for the specific requirements of electric motors. A robust, non-tracking housing plus the high energy handlingcapabilities of the Tyco ElectronicsEnergy Division arrester family make it the ideal choice for the designer.

Low-voltage gapless arrester:LVA

Raychem low voltage surge arrestersprovide protection for low-voltageoverhead lines, consumer in-housesupplies, distribution transformers andother systems. They are designed for applications inwhich protection against direct con-tact is not necessary.Insulated adapter modules are avail-able for use in insulated overheadlinesystems and on low voltage bushingsof distribution transformers.

• Suitable for indoor and outdoor use• Integrated disconnector and 1 m

line lead• Housing and lead is flame

retardant and UV resistant• Easy to identify failure indicator• Easy to install (no tools required)• Large selection of standard

accessories• CE certified• Tested according IEC 61643-1

+ Amd.1 and EN 61643-11

The integral disconnectordisconnects the arrester from the network if an overload occurs, caused, for example, by a lightningstrike in the vicinity or an impermissi-ble voltage excursion in the system. Ifthis happens the rating plate on theunderside of the arrester is displacedand remains dangling on a supportingtie, allowing for easier location of thearrester which must be replaced. Theground connection itself remainssecurely in position.

The gapless metal-oxide varistorincorporated in the surge arrester reli-ably imposes low-value limits onsurges caused by atmospheric over-voltages and switching transients, thus protecting the insulation of theconsumer-side networks and equip-ment. The varistor has a very shortresponse time (typically <100 ns) andcan safely handle high-current impuls-es up to 100 kA, 4/10 μs.

The arrester's nominal dischargecurrent is 10 kA. The metal oxidevaristor is enclosed in a sturdy, weatherproof polymer housing.Numerous tests have confirmed thedurability of the housing, even whenexposed to extreme temperaturefluctuations and contamination. TheLVA surge arresters are in compliancewith requirements Class II as definedby IEC 61643-1.
