Many people are nervous to speak to a group or stand in front of a video camera. Actually, some fear public speaking more than they fear death!

You’re reading this because you have a message you want to share, and something is holding you back. Is that something fear? Of making mistakes, looking unprofessional, feeling like a fraud?

Everyone starts somewhere. If you are a heart-centered entrepreneur who wants to share your gifts, you need to face your fear and manage it.

First things first. I’d like to introduce myself.

My name is Marilyn Eppolite, from The Wisdom Within. I help clients manage their fear, worry and overwhelm with various energy techniques and spiritual principles/counseling. I learned to help them because I needed to manage my fear. Why let all that great knowledge go to waste? I am compelled to share it. I want to help you get your message out.

Preparation for your talk

You have an opportunity to speak to a group, be interviewed or be filmed in a video. Don’t let panic take residence in you…start with the 1st step and I’ll give you calming techniques later in the training!

1. Know the intention of the talk…why are you speaking to this group or doing this video? Be clear about your intention. Write down your goals for each and every presentation.

2. Spend some time in meditation to clear your mind and to clarify your intention.

3. Outline the 3 top messages you need to share. Let everything in your talk flow from those 3 points.

4. Ask to be guided by Spirit. Is there anything else that needs to be said, changed or fine-tuned? Use your “helpers” to connect to the audience and share with you anything else they might need to hear.

5.Tell stories as examples that clarify your main points. It helps to connect to the audience

6. When you feel good about clarifying your message, narrowed it down to the 3 main points, and have your stories, now it is time to fine tune your talk. Make it a part of you.

7. Practice out loud to feel confident with the tone of your voice and your pace. Know the message well enough so you won’t memorize a script. Memorizing a script can be the death of your talk! Get the feel of the message and not the exact words.

8. Visualize your audience receiving your words so you achieve the goals you set out to accomplish.

9. Practice using your energy. Follow the tips below. You’re almost there!

Body language

1. Better to stand than sit. Slouching isn’t a good look on you! Standing helps your diaphragm to expand fully, allow more breath and a fuller voice. Feel the power in your legs as you ground your energy down into the earth. (exercises to practice below)

2. Get out of your head and into your body.Focusing in what you are going to say tends to make people anxious. Walking around before you start talking and feeling your feet on the flow, being conscious of each step. (You’re right, I’m suggesting you practice mindfulness!) Focus on being authentic and grounded. (other tips on this later)

3. Get centered.Some people push their energy to get noticed or to demand, overcome and control. It doesn’t feel good to the other person. You have lost contact with your real goal which is connecting. When we lose touch with ourself we project our power outward in this way. It won’t win you clients. Get centered to avoid this. (Don’t worry..there is more help in an audio later on.)

4. Connect from your heart. Feel the passion you have for sharing your message. Upwell the love vibe, even if you just think about how much you love your golden retriever! Connect your heart to their hearts. Feel and strengthen the connection.

5. Make eye contact with the camera or group.See them as people needing your message. Speak to that person behind the lens if you are filming a video. Pick out individuals in the group and make eye contact. It gets easier the more you practice.

6. Show your passion and enthusiasm.Let them see the real you. Your authenticity is more important than anything you say. Re-read that line again….Your authenticity is more important than anything you say.

Other tips to remember

Plant your body and breathe before speaking. Let the focus be on them rather than on yourself. Don’t worry about them liking you, how your hair is fixed or if you make a mistake. If you are passionate about your topic and know this can help them, focus on seeing them learning from what you say. That’s what is why you are here, right?

Grounding exercises

As an energy therapist, I’ve studied ancient skills that have helped yogis and martial arts experts stay grounded and present. Without having to take any additional classes in yoga or Aikido, here is a quick mini-course to get you started learning how to use your energy.

How to ground yourself quickly and easily

I have learned many ways of grounding, some are more effective than others. Working with clients over the years, everyone has to find their way by practicing a few different methods.

First things first- can you sense your energy?

Can you tell if you are ungrounded?It’s ok if you can’t. If you are anxious, chances are you are ungrounded. Grounding quiets the chatter of our minds. Why? Because when we are anxious, our energy field can rise up and even partially leave our body. It can go off to the side of us. The phrase “beside yourself” is common knowledge of the energy phenomenon. We can’t stay centered if we “aren’t home” in our body.

Let’s get started with the first exercise. You will need a cleared wall, no pictures or furniture for an approx. area of 3 feet wide. Let’s begin.

1. Standing with the wallStand with your back against the wall, bare feet flat on the floor, hip width apart. The wall is there to support you so you get the sense of grounding.Bend your knees and allow your butt to slide down the wall a few inches. Just hang there for a few minutes and observe your body? What’s happening? Your energy will drop down towards your legs to support you standing upright. It’s not rocket science here!

Notice how your legs feel. Are they feeling heavy? Can you feel your feet?Are you focused on standing upright? Good. Your are out of your head and into your body. Notice how the rest of your body feels. If you are struggling, then you aren’t allowing the wall to support you. Trust your body.

Gently bend and straighten your legs. Notice if you go into your head when you stand up. Many people live their lives from their heads- it’s western culture bias. Don’t judge-just get back to your grounding.

2. Bosu Ball ExerciseFor anyone who has used a bosu balance ball at the gym, you will understand this exercise easily. The boss is a weighted half ball that you stand on to work your core muscles but it also helps you ground your energy down into the earth. You could’t stand up otherwise. It’s the same principle as the exercise above, dropping your energy down. Try it if you have access to one. Great fun!

Tools and Techniques

I recommend using along with the grounding exercises to insure you are calm and grounded while giving your presentation. You can use them anytime you are nervous.

1.Essential Oils

Quality therapeutic essential oils are a quick start to grounding. The chemical aspects of plants affect an impact on the physical body, through the nervous system. If they are high quality, they also carry an powerful energetic imprint to shift your energy field (aura) into balance. I suggest some blended oils from Young Living. Try a few to see which ones work best for you. They will calm you just smelling them too!

2. Flower Essences (also known as Flower Remedies)

Flower Essences are energy medicines, a form of vibrational healing that balance the energy field (subtle energies).They are unlike herbs or drugs, which work by making chemical changes in the body. They help shift the personality back into alignment with the soul. They work very deeply for emotional balance, yet are extremely gentle.

My Suggestions (also including ones for fear )To be a great speaker, you need to be relaxed. There are some great flower essences that will help you go from chaos to calm.

The most well known essences are Bach Flower Remedies. They are easily available from most natural food stores.

• Rescue Remedy, an all-around remedy• Mimulus for known fears• White chestnut for ruminating thoughts and obsessive worry • Larch for confidence in self-expression

Other companies make different formula combinations to help manage fear. My favorite is Flower Essence Services, sourced in California. These sprays are all from the Flourish Collection. Follow directions on the label for usage.

3. Neuro-vascular (NV) Holding Points

The Frontal & Occipital Hold will help you release stress and eliminate the zone-out effect of worry.

By holding the forehead (Frontal Lobe) and the back brain (Occipital Lobe), we can assist the blood in the brain to circulate more efficiently. Stress draws the blood circulation away from the frontal brain, eliminating our ability to think clearly. Blood is being sent all over the body to activate flight, running away from a threatening situation like a wild animal looking to have us for its next meal. I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember having to run to avoid being someone’s lunch. Some days I do feel like I am running away from my inner fears and worries…running doesn’t help. But this technique will!

Stress draws the blood circulation away from the frontal brain, eliminating our ability to think clearly. Blood is being sent all over the body to activate flight, running away from a threatening situation like a wild animal looking to have us for its next meal. I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember having to run to avoid being someone’s lunch. Some days I do feel like I am running away from my inner fears and worries…running doesn’t help. But this technique will!

This technique helps to move the blood back to our frontal lobe, activating once again our ability to think process information rather than just emotionally react. It will shortchange the fight or flight response and you can once again return to calmer thoughts.

Whenever you are feeling stressed or plagued by worry, place the palm of one hand over your forehead in a relaxed way and place the other hand on the back of your head, right at the top of your neck. Hold these points for 4-5 minutes, while breathing gently, until you feel yourself settle into your body again. Hold for as long as feels comfortable. You may be so stressed it may feel good to hold it for longer as this will calm the nervous system.

4. EFT also known as Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping)

Tapping is a wonderful technique for alleviating stress and emotional pain. I utilize this technique with clients (and for myself) because it works! This video will show you how to use this technique for emergency situations, but you must practice it so you know how to use it when you really need it. And why not? It is great to use it every day so that you can eliminate your daily stress -no need for stress to build up into chronic distress. For emotional first aid, just tapping the points will eliminate your stress level. Focus on your fear and tap through the points.
