Gas Turbines and Combined Cycle Plants
Combined Cycle Power PlantsAs the most efficient of the currently availablethermal power generation technologies, gasturbine based combined cycle power plants arethe technology of choice for flexible, utility scalepower generation. Apart from the high efficiencycompared to traditional steam boiler plants, combined cycle plants offer advantages in termsof their relatively low environmental impact, highlevel of flexibility and shorter project imple-mentation times.
METKA’s experience covers both single shaft andmulti shaft configurations, and a wide range of gasturbine models including both heavy dutyindustrial and aeroderivative types. Single shaftconfigurations, with the gas turbine and steamturbine on the same axis, connected to a singlegenerator, have an advantage in terms of thecompact layout. Multi shaft configurations mayhave one or more gas turbine generators, togetherwith a single steam turbine generator. Our mostrecent projects are based on the latest generation“F” class gas turbine technology from the leadingOEMs, including GE, Siemens, Alstom and Ansaldo, providing extremely high plant efficiency.
METKA combined cycle solutions use well-established reference plant concepts as a basis forthe design, with flexibility to meet client needs, aswell as other local market and project specificrequirements. We work closely with the power-trainmanufacturer so that proven product developments, and lessons learned from previous operatingexperience, can be built into the plant design. Thelatest technologies and operating philosophies aretherefore available in such areas as:
– Plant flexibility, such as start-up / shut-downtimes and cycling operations to enhanceeconomic dispatch of the plant
– Performance improvements, including tech-niques, such as natural gas pre-heating, inletair chilling, part-load efficiency optimization
– Emission controls, using the latest NOx reductiontechniques
With experience of numerous combined cycleprojects, and several different configuration types,METKA has the expertise to ensure that all plantcomponents are properly selected, leading to awell integrated plant design and reliable long-termplant operation.
METKA has significant expertise in gas turbine based powerplants, with a broad range of experience in combined cycle,co-generation and simple cycle projects. We provide ourcustomers with highly competitive combined cycle plants with world-class performance.

Simple Cycle Power PlantsFor peaking duty or fast-track projectexecution, gas turbine based simplecycle plants are an ideal solution. Bothindustrial and aeroderivative type gasturbines are widely applied, with thelatest generation aeroderivative gasturbines offering efficiencies above 40%.Where appropriate, METKA designssimple cycle plants to facilitate futureconversion to combined cycle.
METKA has successfully carried outseveral projects to provide fast-tracksimple cycle power generation capacity, with particular experience with aero-derivative type gas turbines.
Co-generationFor combined heat and power (CHP) applications, such as industrial steamproduction and district heating, combined cycle plants can provide very high overallefficiency, and large environmental benefits. Co-generation applications are typicallymore complex in operation than standard combined cycle plants, due to therequirement to support multiple operating modes, such as large variations inprocess steam requirements, or changing seasonal heating demand. Strong plantintegration and thermal cycle design skills are essential to ensure the co-generationplant can reliably support all required operational needs.
METKA has successfully completed a major co-generation plant project forAluminium of Greece, the largest co-generation plant of its kind in Europe. Theplant produces electricity for the network and a highly reliable steam supply to theadjacent alumina production plant.

Mobile Gas TurbinePower PlantsFlexible to meet customers’ needs, mobile gas turbine power units typicallyhave a unit size of 20-25MW, with com-plete plants being scalable up to severalhundred MW.
METKA has developed a fast-track ap-proach with complete, trailer mountedbalance of plant. All packages are delive-red in a completely assembled and pre-commissioned form. This solution in par-ticular requires little or no site prepara-tion, and can provide power to the gridin only a few months.

Florina 330 MW lignite fired power plant
Conventional PlantsMuch of the world’s existing power generation capacity is based on tradi-tional steam power plants. The new generation of larger coal fired powerplants with supercritical steam technology offers potential for majorimprovements in plant efficiency. There are also significant opportunitiesfor upgrading of the existing fleet plants to extend lifetime and improveperformance.
METKA has several decades of experience in steam power plants projects, and we have participated as consortium partner in the construction of mostof the units installed in Greece over the past 30 years. We have a strongbackground in upgrading/rehabilitation and construction of large lignitefired units, and we manufacture a range of major plant components andequipment in our industrial facilities. Our extensive experience in this areaincludes complete turn-key solutions for lignite handling and mills, balanceof plant, and ash conveying and disposal systems.
Environmental UpgradesAn entire generation of power plants faces a growing range of environ-mental regulations and increasingly stringent emission controls. At thesame time the industry is challenged to boost power plant efficiency, increase availability and extend plant lifetime. We execute projects toimprove environmental performance, either by upgrading existing equip-ment or by installing new state-of-the-art emission control technologies.
METKA as consortium leader with Alstom has completed a series of projectswhich dramatically reduced particulate emissions from existing lignite firedunits throughout Greece. By replacing and upgrading the existing Electro-static Precipitators (ESPs), as well as by adding new high performance ESPs, wehelped the Public Power Corporation to bring plant environmental per-formance in line with national legislation and the European Directive2008/01/EC on integrated pollution prevention and control.

Renewables
Hydro Power GenerationIntelligent use of water’s potential for hydro power gener-ation can provide cost-effective long term power and signif-icant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. Pumpedstorage hydro also helps enable increased penetration ofintermittent power sources, such as wind and solar.
METKA has a long-standing presence in hydro power, witha wide range of projects completed over several decades. Our experience ranges from small run-of-river hydro tolarge pumped storage plants. We have a strong trackrecord in manufacturing major equipment componentsfor hydro applications.
For large hydro projects METKA provides complete solu-tions for all electro-mechanical works, whilst for small hydroprojects METKA delivers the complete power plant on aturn-key basis, including civil works.
METKArecognizesthe globalchallenge of climatechange andthe critical importance of renewableenergysources –such as the sun, wind, water andbiomass – for sustainable development. We stronglysupport the adoption of low carbontechnologies and we arecommitted to continuousdevelopmentof our capabilities in this area.
