Energy Saving Week21-27 Nov 2011

Institut Jaume Callís (Vic, Barcelona)

An initial audit

Some students went round the school

and noted down all the things they

noticed in which energy is wasted.

This is what they found out:

Our school is not energy efficient!

We have noticed that in our school, we waste a lot of energy, for instance:

• We have the windows open and the heating is on.• We leave the computer in stand by. • We have the lights on and the blinds closed.• Not all the teachers give us the photocopies printed on both sides. • We can't regulate the heating, and sometimes it is so hot!• Many students use aluminum paper to wrap the sandwiches. • A lot of students come to school by car or motorbike.• The books are too thick and we never finish them. • In our school there are not any recycling bins.• There're a lot of lights on and that isn't necessary.

• In our school sometimes we save energy but sometimes we don't, for example:

• We never turn off the lights when we leave the class.• We open the windows when the heating is on.• We never switch off the computers.• We always leave the projector in stand by.• Only a few students come to school on the public bus.• Most of the students come to school by car or on foot.• The photocopies that the teachers give us are only on one side.• In the toilets, when we open the tap, the water runs but it stops after a

few minutes, but we cannot close the tap. But…• the main entrance is always closed and the cold doesn't come in.

What we have to do to save energy in our school?

Well, first we have to speak about Ies Jaume Callis, Ies jaume Callis doesn't save a lot of energy.

• For example the computers in the lab are always on. We have to switch them off.• Then, instead of making the most of solar energy, we switch on

the lights.• On the other hand, we have to regulate the heating. • Ies Jaume Callis last year made a very nice thing for recycling,

They didn’t sell chips at the bar. So it meant that there were less rubbish.

• We think that it is very important to do something about it. Some people could help the environment if they came to school by bike or public transport and when they buy paper, they should recycle it

The energy wasted in Institut JAUME CALLIS

In the school Jaume Callis, there are a lot of ways in which we waste energy:

• For example, the heating is on all the day, and at eleven o'clock, the classes there are very hot, and if the heating is put on at night, and then, in the morning is switched off, the classrooms would be fine.

• Sometimes, there're classrooms with the heating on, and the windows are open, and the class is cold and the heating is on.

• About the lights, there are a lot of classes, there are the lights on, and in this class, nobody is there.

• The computers are in standby, and the students don't use them.

By Ernest Martinez

Our school and energy: Bruna, Ernest and myself had to go around the school looking for

things that were using energy and weren't being used. Throughout the school we found quite a few cases were there was

an appliance on when nobody was using it:

• We found that in some 'abandoned' (no one was in any of the classes of that hallway) hallways the lights were still on. The same goes for the heaters in the hallways that no one is using.

• When we walked passed the computer lab we noticed that all the computers in the class room, where on standby mode, even though this doesn't waste much energy but energy is energy and it costs money!

• Once we got back to class we noticed we were even wasting energy in our own class room. The heaters were on, but the windows were open so all the energy from the heaters was being crossed out by the cold air coming in through the window.

• We should be more careful and save more energy, like turning the computers and turning the lights of when we all leave class and go home.

• And the last thing photocopies are only on one side of the paper, and we waste a lot of paper.

Make people conscious!!!!!

Students designed and created logos for some posters

We then hanged them in different “hot spots” in our school.
