2. Water availability in Cyprus

-Promotion of efficient irrigation practices.

-Many policies and practices have been developed inorder to increase water collection, storage capacityand availability.

-Collection of rain water in 180 dams. (Rain water is also collected from greenhouses structures)

-Water is considered to be one of the most valuable natural recourses of the country.

-Pumping ground water from private licensedDrills. Desalinization plans -Sewage water



3. Agriculture in Cyprus

Agricultural sector contributes 2,4% of the national GDP.

Total gross output comes up to €666 millions.

Crop production contributes 35% of the total value added in agriculture.

Livestock contributes 50% of the total value added in agriculture.

Main cultivated crops: fodder crops, cereals, olives

Main exporting crop products: potatoes, citrus, leafy vegetables and Halloumi cheese

4. Greenhouses

Greenhouse crop production is considered to be the most intensive and energy consuming horticultural system.

Greenhouses occupy 440 hectarescorresponding to 0,5% of the totalcultivated area.

Main crops cultivated in greenhouses: vegetables and flowers.

•Greenhouses infrastructure and equipment varies within the country.•50% of greenhouses are high and low tunnels

•50% of the greenhouses covered area is equipped with heating systems .

•Hydroponic cultivation systems (estimated 10% of the greenhouses covered area).

•10% of the greenhouses covered area is equipped with cooling systems .

Need for reduction of operational cost mainly derived from the tremendous increase of fossil fuel prices.

Minimization of the use of the available equipment.

Significant reduction of yields, product quality and unbalanced food chain market’s supply.

5. What’s the goal?

The ultimate goal is:

•to reduce the energy consumption cost during greenhouse crop production,

•minimise the dependence of greenhouse operations to fossil fuels,

•secure food chain supply and

•optimize producer’s production and income.



6. Purpose of the study

The main purpose of the study is to:1. determine the energy needs of each agricultural sectorand,2. reveal possible and potential ways for energy saving

7. Main tasks and deliverables

Task 1Collect data – Mapping of current situation for Floriculture/ Vegetables sectors(existing energy profile for greenhouse production of vegetables andfloriculture) and for Animal sector [existing energy profile for livestock farmsproduction such as meat (broilers, pigs, rabbits, edible and hatching eggs (layersand breeders)].For this purpose, we scheduled field visits both for greenhouses and the animalsector. During the visits, experts will be accompanied by at least one agriculturalofficer from the relevant sector.

Deliverable 1Determine the energy profile of greenhouses and the animal sector in Cyprus.

Task 2- Deliverable 2Measures for rational energy use and combined methods of energy saving for allrelevant sectors of greenhouse and livestock production in Cyprus.
