The MEDIA-TECH Association has beenworking with various other organizationsinvolved in optical media and related fields:AIMMA (American Independent MediaManufacturers Association), DVDA (DVDAssociation) and IDDA (International DiscDuplicating Association).

DVDA – education and information

The DVDA has a history that goes back to 1990,when it started life as the CDIA (Compact DiscInteractive Association). Within one year theorganization had established its still-runningawards for excellence in DVD – recognizingmeritorious achievement from both developersand content owners. In addition to the DVD Excellence Awards, last year saw the inauguration of the DVD Brilliance Awards for‘best of breed’ DVDs in a number of categories.

With the introduction of the DVD format, theorganization changed its name to the IDMA(Interactive Digital Media Association) and wasthen incorporated as the DVDA in 2002, when italso merged with SIGCAT (Special InterestsGroup on CD-ROM Applications and Technology).Part of the DVDA’s plans for next year includeaggressively expanding its outreach to both professional and desktop DVD authors throughinnovative new programmes.

“DVD has taken its rightful place in the main-stream of video publishing and communicationformats, and is now casually used by millions ofpeople every day, without a second thought,”says recently-elected president Bruce Nazarian.“The collaboration with the MEDIA-TECH association fits perfectly into our remit, whichwe see as informing people and promoting thebenefits of our technology to a larger audience.”

Information is crucial in this age where there are not only still challenges to be overcome withthe manufacture of standard DVD, but also new potential pitfalls with the advent of highdefinition media. It is the function of the industry organizations to educate people insideand outside the media manufacturing world.

“Going forward there is a ‘rewind’ back to theearly days when DVD first came on the scene,”says Nazarian. “There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about the two new high definition formats. We want to educate andinform, and people like our chairman, Jim Taylorof Sonic, are demystifying DVD and helping the industry learn how to create content for andmanufacture optical media.”

Nazarian believes that it is essential for the content owners to understand the vastly increased capability of the next generation ofhigher-capacity optical media, and the increasedpotential for interactivity and web connectivity.“Content creators and creative people in ourindustry are not necessarily aware of what canbe done and we think it is vital that they aregiven reasons to be enthusiastic about whatthey can do with optical media and how it canprovide added value for their products.

“We plan to take a far more active role in imparting information to participants at industry events such as the next MEDIA-TECHconference.”

AIMMA – advancingmedia manufacturinginterests

Founded in 1987 as the AVDA, AIMMA is a senior executive-level organization of inde-pendent media manufacturing owners and operators. All members manufacture media, with replicators, duplicators and mastering facilities represented. Membership is open to allNorth American media manufacturers regardlessof size or medium manufactured. To qualify for membership, companies must document that they are in compliance with and not violate licensing, intellectual property rights and intellectual property laws applicable to their business.

AIMMA member companies comprise the majority of the non-theatrical replication andduplication capacity in the North American market. The organization was established toadvance the interests of the media manufacturingindustry and its members through collectiveadvocacy, education and networking. Asso-ciation meetings are held twice yearly, with the primary focus being discussion of issues ofcommon concern for replicators and duplicators.

At a recent AIMMA meeting, three new boardmembers were elected and officers named. Newboard members are Mike Taylor of ActionDuplication, Jad Porter of Design Video

IDDA – promoting technologies for growth

The IDDA, which was formed in 2001, is open toall companies whose business is involved in anyway with CD and DVD duplication, as well asother media duplication such as flash memory.Members come from several US states,Australia and the UK and include, among others, companies and organizations that duplicate, label and pack CDs, and manufacture and sell automatic disc duplicating machines andlabel makers.

The IDDA is concerned with maintaining ethicalstandards for its members, as well as testingand disseminating information on products, working with suppliers to meet the needs of the members, and promoting technologies that can lead to growth within the disc duplicating industry. The IDDA was one of thefirst organizations to join forces with theMEDIA-TECH Association. It promotes attendanceat the MEDIA-TECH trade shows to the duplicating industry, while the MTA supportsefforts to grow the IDDA.

“Boundaries between the digital content physical media manufacturing and duplicatingindustries are becoming blurred; with the cost ofmedia and equipment falling, longer runs aremore economical,” says IDDA president andfounder Bernhard Kirschner. “New printing technologies, higher quality media and moreshared knowledge are allowing duplicators whorecord onto recordable media and replicators

who manufacture the media to work closertogether. The MTA has the resources and manpower to assist the IDDA with administrationand marketing, while there are thousands of media duplicators worldwide who wouldbenefit from being able to share in the resourcesof the two groups.”

A number of MEDIA-TECH Association members are planning a high-def line-up ofproducts for May’s Expo in Frankfurt.Traditional formats will not be neglected;and there will be a wealth of information on standard media duplication and replication, as well as related technologies. MEDIA-TECH Expo 2008 will also provide theindustry’s best focus on equipment and services for next generation optical media.

Among the product spotlights will be BD50lines from Oerlikon, Singulus and Anwell for dual layer media, underlining the Holly-wood urge to take advantage of the highercapacity media and release titles withgreater potential for interactivity and webconnectivity. With the tighter tolerancesand increased manufacturing challenges ofhigher definition media, quality assuranceand control are a vital part of the pro-duction process, and this is highlighted by the strong presence of test equipment companies such as AudioDev, DaTARIUS, dr.schwab, and Xiris, who will be presentingtheir solutions for BD and HD DVD quality.

News from AudioDevAudioDev has added to its product line-up with theBD and HD DVD Stamper testers in the CATS familyas well as the BD Go! for the recordable market.

The Go! BD S11 is a production tester for record-able BD discs, based on a specially selected consumer drive but using the CATS measurementtechnology. Its prime feature is ‘SpeedScan’, a measurement method that can measure a

complete BD-R 50 GB in only 30 minutes. It makesseveral thousands partial tests with push-pullmeasurement in-between. The method has a highcorrelation to normal 1x measurement and is a convenient method to get a fast and reliableoverview of finished produced discs.

Go! can also write discs either with the measure-ment drive or by connecting an external consumerdrive through USB. The operator can then set theexact writing power or use normal OPC.

The CATS Stamper Tester is available for bothBD and HD DVD. In order to compensate for thelack of polycarbonate two different methods areused: a compensation window for HD DVD or a 0.1mm glass foil for BD. The stampers areattached to an adapter that has a magnetic layer to ensure the stamper stays flat during measurements. The tester can’t do both replicaverification and stamper verification. By usingthe 0.1 mm glass foil correct optical characteristics can be achieved with a read-outsituation very similar to that of a replica.www.audiodev.com

News from DaTARIUSDaTARIUS is also featuring its own line-up ofhigh-definition products: the Quality SolutionSuite for blue formats, from stamper to finisheddiscs. The suite includes the DaTABANK and itsdriveCube for Stamper and Disc (DVD, BD andHD DVD); the CoverTest; ECC and BalanceAnalyzer; digital print and ident code inspectionfor the high definition look and feel of discs, andthe company’s regularly produced Signal Guides, recently released in BD and HD DVD versions.

The CoverTest technology consists of a specialfilm (CoverTest film) utilizing a UV Cure adhesivewhich adapts to the pit and land structure of thestamper. This is used with a bonding unit whichapplies the film onto the stamper in a vacuum. The CoverTest film also protects the stamperduring handling, storage and testing. The resultis that stampers now give data directly relatingto a finished disc allowing the fastest way tooptimize stamper performance. The film can beeasily removed and does not leave any residueon the stamper.

Ident Code and Print Inspection systems usespecially developed cameras to cope with theincreasing emphasis on removing the risk of pro-duct mixing, along with a need for better printand packaging quality.
