1. Manchester is a major city in the north-west of England. It’s one of

the biggest cities and it has more than 2 million people living there.

It is known for its good rail and road communications.

2. Manchester has four seasons. In winter, it gets so cold that you

can’t feel your fingertips and toes. The temperature drops low to

25o degrees. It snows a lot and it rarely rains. It becomes very dry. In

summer, it gets a little bit warmer and it rains sometimes. Some

days, it may get a little bit sunny and windy. The temperature

reaches 21o degrees mostly.

3. Things to do and to see:

You have to visit the magnificent Victorian buildings near

Albert Square.

For those who like dangerous activities, you should go white

water rafting on the waterfall and skydiving too.

In the city, you can shop till you drop! There are some lovely

souvenirs for friends and family.

If you are a nature lover, you must go to the countryside to

see the mountains, but be careful! There’s a dangerous cliff.

Do not miss visiting the adorable green forest and have a

barbeque.

4. Manchester is the perfect holiday destination for friends and

families. It won’t cost you a lot, due to its reasonable prices. But I

Norway

Norway has four wonderful seasons and there are places to visit all year round.

Spring When the weather gets warmer after the long winter you can experience the Norwegian Fjords by boat. At this time of the year, the waterfalls are dramatic because the winter snow is melting. The days are warmer, but you need to bring an umbrella!

Summer People think that Norway is a cold country all year round, but in fact the temperatures can reach 25-30 degrees during the summer. This is the ideal time to visit the sandy beaches of southern Norway. There are also many beautiful lakes where you can swim and go sailing.

Autumn This is a quiet time in Norway and it is one of the best times to visit because the countryside is very beautiful. The trees change to wonderful colours when autumn comes. The air is also clear and fresh. This means it is the perfect time to go mountain trekking.

Winter When the temperature drops. Norway becomes an exceptional place to visit. In the mountains areas you can go skiing and snowboarding. It is also the ideal time to visit the north of Norway - the Arctic region. When the weather is right and the nights are long, you can see the spectacular Northern Lights- an unforgettable experience.

Reading 3: Read the following article and answer the questions below:

Bahrain is a small island in the Arabian Gulf. The weather in Bahrain is hot and

humid in general. The average temperature is 36° degrees.

There are two seasons in my country; summer and winter. Summer starts in April

and lasts till November. It can be really hot in summer and the temperature

reaches 50° degrees. The rainy season starts in December, and it gets really cold

at night.

The weather is changing because of the human use of fuels, which releases

carbon and gases into the air. Also the earth’s spinning round the sun plays a big

role in changing the weather. In the past, winter was freezing with some sleet,

now it is mild and foggy.

People’s lives are affected by the weather. When it is too hot, Bahraini people

go to swimming pools and do sea sports. Also, they tend to wear light and

colorful clothes, like shirts and shorts. During the rainy season, they prefer going

to outdoor cafés and restaurants, as well as going camping in Sakheer. As for

their cloths, they wear jackets and hoodies.

I like the weather in my country. I enjoy sea sports all year long. Also, I can wear

light clothes during both seasons.

Reading 4: Read the following biography and answer the questions below:

Simone de Beauvoir

Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) was a French writer and philosopher.

She was born in Paris. Simone was raised in a wealthy family, who

struggled after the World War 1 for losing much of their fortune. Yet,

she and her sister Hélène were sent to prominent schools.

In 1929, when she was studying at the University of the Sorbonne, she

met Jean-Paul Sartre. De Beauvoir and Sartre started a relationship

that lasted for life. Sartre later became the major French philosopher

of the twentieth century.

In the 1930’s and early 1940’s, de Beauvoir was teaching in high schools

in different French cities and at the Sorbonne. All this time, she was

developing her ideas about philosophy and about the position of

women in society. In 1949, she laid the foundation for the modern

feminist movement by launching her first book “The

Second Sex” which became a very important book for

women in the 1970s.

De Beauvoir travelled a lot, often with Sartre and

visited Portugal, Italy, China and the USA. Jean-Paul

Sartre died in 1980. In 1981, de Beauvoir wrote a painful

book about his last years.

Reading 6: Read the following text and answer the questions below:

Post title: Math is Fun! Date: 27/10/2017

Today I had a math exam. I finished first, and I was very happy about my answers. This

was my first time ever finding math easy. I am very thankful to my teacher Zainab.

Because she took time every day, helping me and explaining the lesson. She was patient

and understanding. I learned that if you work hard you will be rewarded. Also, don’t ever

give up on your dreams only because they are difficult.

UNIT 2 -People-

About me:

My name is Sara. I’m a student in Jidhafs Secondary Girls School.

Post title: Worst Birthday EVER. Date: 11/10/2017

Yesterday, I had the worst birthday ever. Many things happened that ruined my day.

First, I was trying to make myself breakfast, but I burnt my sandwich. Later, I was looking

for the dress I wanted to wear for my birthday dinner, but I couldn’t find it. The last thing

was the worst. While my family and I were on our way to my grandma’s house, we had

a car accident. All these horrible things happened on my birthday so I was upset. Yet, I

learned that we all go through bad days but we should always focus on the good and

positive side.

Post title: The day I lost you! Date: 3/10/2017

My uncle was with me in every step in my life and he was the one who kept encouraging

me. I’ve always thought that he used to shout a lot when he spoke to me, so I did not

listen to him whenever he advised me, and I used to hate him. However, when I lost

him, I understood that it was his way of speaking. That’s why it was my hardest day,

because I wasn’t showing him my love. I learned not to judge the person before

understanding him.

Reading 7: Read the following text and answer the questions below:

MasterChef Do you enjoy watching cookery programmes? Do you like cooking? What type of

dishes do you prefer? Master Chef is an Australian competitive cooking reality

show. Broadcasting at 9 p.m. on fox movies. It was produced by Shine Australia

on April 27, 2009. It has 9 seasons so far.

The program is about home Chefs and professional Chefs who take part in a

series of cooking challenges that cause them to face eliminations. At the end of

the season, one of them wins the competition and gets the main prize.

Throughout the episodes the judges taste the food and give feedback or score.

Another interesting thing about the show is the judges, Matt, George and Gary.

They are cheerful and supportive, they push the competitors to do their best.

They are so funny, they spread laughter whenever it’s too tense. Gary has short

black hair and black eyes. He is taller than Matt. George is bald and he is the

shortest.

To finalize, Master Chef is suitable for families even for children, because there

is no violence or bad language. In fact, it would help people learn more recipes.
