SHOEBOX HOME SHOWCASE BY SENIOR KINDERGARTEN — Homes from different countries By: Cecilia Yun, Teacher Intern

On April 2nd, there was a home showcase and presentation by Senior Kindergarten students.  Parents came to see shoebox homes from different countries. Students introduced their shoebox homes to their parents and explained how they included ideas into their shoebox home design. They also looked at other classes’ presentations to learn about different types of homes in the world. In this project, we researched some different homes in the world using Google Earth and made shoebox homes.  In order to build the exterior and interior of each home, we looked

at home pictures from Google Earth. Then we discussed what the homes tell students about the people living in these different structures. We explored their homes by marking the location on the world map, writing items in each home and listing the items to add their own house. Learning the different types of people, homes and cultures helped extended our understanding. We enjoyed learning about the different countries and people in the world!

ONE METRE OF STRING — An investigation into area and perimeter

By Susie Caruana, Grade 5 Teacher

In mathematics lessons recently, Grade 5 students have been learning and exploring within the concept of Shape and Space. Our students were given a task of comparing the area of certain shapes that all had the same perimeter.

The Task is outlinedTASK: Using the metre of string as a guide, make each of the following shapes and record them on your paper. Include all measurements and calculate the area of each shape. SHAPES: square, rectangle, equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle, right-angled triangle and circle MATERIALS: 1 metre of string, pencil, paper, ruler, protractor

Prior to commencing the task, students were asked if they needed any extra/new information in order to complete their investigation. After some discussion it was established that they needed to clarify; a) the properties of the three triangles; b) the formula for calculating the area of a triangle; c) the properties of a circle; and d) the formula for calculating the area of a circle.

Students worked in pairs throughout this task and it was very interesting to observe the various working styles and listen to the rich discussions taking place. Attention to precision was obvious and as students progressed they found that they had even more questions and clarifications for certain shapes and calculations.

At the completion of the task the students all shared their results and answered some reflection questions.

The following are examples:REFLECTIONS: • We found that the equilateral

triangle can’t make perfect 100 cm perimeter.

• The area of the isosceles triangle we drew was 454 sqcm, and the isosceles triangle that the other group drew was 332 sqcm

• It was interesting to use pi to find out the area of the circle.

• By comparing with another team, we found out that the area of the circles were different. But they should be same because the perimeter/circumference was the same.

• We found out that every shape’s area was different even though the perimeter was the same.

BHA LOWER JUNIOR SCHOOL HAVING A SPLASH!

Junior Kindergarten started their first swimming lessons and they enjoyed it.

By Gaspar Villanueva. Junior School Swimming and PE teacher.

Spring has finally come to Jeju, you can tell not just by the beautiful sight of the cherry blossoms in the GEC, but also by the happy faces of our younger students after their first swimming lessons. For the next eight weeks, our kindergarten students will be taking part this activity. With the attentive help of our swimming team, students will start developing their aquatic skills to make them safe and comfortable in the pool environment. For this first unit, students will practice their breathing and mobility while in the water by doing various activities and playing games. We are excited to have them in the pool learning to swim and most importantly becoming water safe in a fun relaxed environment.

LOST PROPERTYThere will be a change to our procedure for lost property from next week. The wardrobe and hanging rail have been relocated and any items that are found will be stored in the Junior School office. Once a month, starting on Monday 29th April, there will be a display of items found. Please remember to clearly label all items, thank you.

AUTHOR ROB LLOYD JONES VISITS GRADE 6 VISUAL ARTS

By Mauro Brooks, MYP Art and D&T Teacher The popular British children’s author, Rob Lloyd Jones, took time out of his busy schedule to visit our Year 6 girls during their Visual Arts classes. Mr. Jones came to talk to them about his books and about how he gets his character ideas, as well as how visuals play a role in storytelling. He spent time explaining how artists, illustrators and designers all contribute to the look of his books and about the processes used to create the final designs. It came as no surprise that our girls offered stories of their own to tell, and tell them they did much to the delight of Mr. Jones. Our girls have been doing the Visual Arts Unit called ‘Visual Storytelling’ where they have researched ancient cultures and how they depicted stories in visual ways.

By placing themselves in ancient times, the students came up with many different stories that provided insight into the past. They then designed and created a visual image that conveyed a feeling for antiquity and often with a good sense of humor. Below are some of the stories and images as well as pictures of our visiting author, Mr. Rob Lloyd Jones.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN BOARDING — Educating the Whole Child By Laura Franks, Head of Shin Saimdang

Ms. Macdonald, one of our Teacher Dons in Shin Saimdang House, has developed and implemented a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program. Each week, she trains the other Teacher Dons in the House on a topic related to SEL, and then the teacher dons share the information and activity with their families during family meetings.

So far, the students have learned about stress (what it is, how they respond to it and how they can better cope with it), characteristics of a good friend and anti-bullying (what it is, what strategies they may use if they are a victim or a bystander), This

week’s topic was positive affirmations (a strategy that we can use to help us build confidence, improve our performance and improve our mental skills).  See what the positive affirmations are for two of our Boarding students!

GRADE 10 GEOGRAPHY RESEARCH By Chris Cumings, Geography Teacher

Last week year 10 Geography students completed an Individual Research Project on global topics and cultural diffusion. They could investigate any topic as long as it related to culture and could show how that topic was viewed not only in South Korea but across other countries. Students also had to comment on the personal impact investigating this topic had on them. There are some powerful messages here and you can read their essays and learn about these topics by scanning the QR codes on their cover sheets posted on the Humanities board, 2nd floor PAC, on the way to music.

UNIVERSITY COUNSELOR NEWS

UPDATE ON COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES By Mark Lee, on behalf of University Counseling Team

This week has seen much activity in the University Counseling office as offers to quality universities around the world continue to be received by members of our graduating class.  Indeed, this morning we received another acceptance for one of our Grade 12 students to attend a well recognized medical school directly out of their high school program at Branksome Hall Asia.  So far, four such offers to direct entry medicine have been received by this graduating class alone in regions that include Ireland, England, and the Caribbean.

Our students have also received a significant number of offers to other health science programs.  For example, six offers of admission have been received by our students to direct entry dentistry programs in the United States and seven students have been accepted so far to pharmacological programs.  Further, a total of twelve students have been accepted to biomedical and/or life science programs. Participating in relevant health sciences related experiences or programs can be an important step on the path to choosing and becoming accepted at a professional program in related fields.  Experiences that include summer programs and/or summer courses at universities are valuable for students to deepen and verify their understanding and passion about an area of study.

Such experiences also demonstrate to prospective universities sincere student interest in the subject of interest. The diversity of disciplines represented in our offers of admission received to date is also truly remarkable.   About thirty-five students have received offers to commerce, business management and business administration undergraduate programs for 2019.

These offers come from quality schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong. Our students have also achieved fabulous success in their applications to schools of fine art.  To date, about 24 students have received offers to quality schools in this field the United States and Europe. Offers have also been received from schools of architecture, computer science, and general arts and sciences programs, to name but a few categories.

The overall success of our students this year is evident in offers received to date from 16 of the worlds’ 40 top ranked universities (QS Ranking).  These include the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, The University of Chicago, University College, London, Cornell University, The University of Edinburgh, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Hong Kong.   We look forward to providing a summary report shortly after we receive remaining offers from universities.
