AROUND THE GROUNDS – ROUND NO.4

Not the greatest of rounds for our junior sides with only three wins, eight losses and a bye,

but remarkably we are still holding down first place in the SSJCA Club Championship. The

best performing teams this round were the U8 Blue team who had a brilliant second week

of their match to beat St. Patricks by 33 runs, the 10A’s with a hard fought win over DLS

Seagulls by 2 runs and the 10E’s with a strong win over Gymea Bay. Of the losing sides the

12D’s were the unluckiest going down by only 2 runs.

The top performances came from ‘Junior Player of the Round’ Elijah Dundas (10A) 40 runs

and ‘Intermediate Player of the Round’ Callum Herron (14C) with 4 for 47. Other efforts

worth noting were by Hamish Jacka (14C) 51 not out, Tyler Cussen (14A) 39 runs, Jacob

Chapman (12C) 3 for 7, Josh Mathews (16A) 3 for 12 and Mitchell Betts (16A) 3 for 16.

With the modified teams winning three of their four matches there were some outstanding

batting and bowling by our young players with Jayden Dundas (U8) 37 runs, Thomas

Wheatley (U8) 27 runs, Brodie Moore (10E) 24 runs, Lucas Sheehy (U8) 23 runs, Zachary

Brownscombe (10E) 2 for 7, Alex Caspersonn (10E) 2 for 11, Will Marcic (10C) and Liam

Gunnell (10C) 2 for 19. The star of this round was Ryan Lillis (U8) with an amazing all

rounder display of 45 runs and 2 for 5.

The senior sides travelled much better than the juniors this round with 5 wins from 9

matches. Our B3 and B4 sides both played two ‘One Dayers’ over the past two weekends

with the honours split with one win apiece. Plus Fitness Engadine ‘Senior Player of the

Round’ Josh Kennedy (B3) 5 for 1 was the stand out player. The B2-2 team recorded a great

outright win over Gymea Bay after declaring on 8 for 283 thanks to the batting of David

McMillan 58 runs, Michael Bedford 57 runs and Ryan Emerson 56 not out. Other

performances requiring special mention came from Jaryd Duncan (B1-2) 95 runs, Andrew

Regan (B2-1) 85 runs, Sam Haynes (B1-2) 68 runs, Joel Manns (B1-1) 3 for 11 and Anurrag

Varanasi (B4) 3 for 19.

Round 3 Match Report –

This was a hard game to judge with the horrible weather causing an end to play half way through our batting innings. In the end we fell just short but all in all a great effort by everyone. Man of the Match for a much improved bowling performance and fantastic commitment in field was Noah – Well done mate, keep it. Engadine 8/104

St Pats 1/146

Engadine won by 42 runs

This was an excellent result for the team on Saturday. A great come from behind win. Congrats to Thomas Wheatley for Man of the Match, as I’ve said before it’s not just about stats, I like to see support, encouragement interest and enthusiasm for each other and the team, all of which Thomas displayed to go along with his 1 wicket and 29 runs.

We were well behind on runs coming into week 2, Enter - Ryan and Lucas Sheehy, they’re typically consistent individual batting displays and tremendous running between the wickets combined into an outstanding partnership of 78 runs which completely took the game away from St Pats, really well batted boys!

Jayden batted brilliantly week 1 with 4 boundaries off the one over. Jayden partnered with Noah who showed great determination and commitment. Noah is improving each week and has great game awareness for someone his age. Kobi and Lucas White were solid together with some decent hitting forming a 21 run partnership. Lucas Couse and Thomas W combined with some big hitting all around the park with 16 and 29 respectively. I was really pleased to see Thomas Caleo and Charles bat so well together with some great shots, decisive calling and running between the wickets.

With the ball, a very difficult second week to bowl with gale force winds blowing across the field. To see the boys adjust to the conditions so well was very satisfying. Well done to Thomas W and Lucas S who each took 1 wicket and

Page 9: Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER No. 4 · Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER ... Seagulls by 2 runs and the 10E’s with a strong win over Gymea Bay. Of the

without the wind could have easily had more, Jayden bowled consistently as always week 1 taking 1 wicket and Ryan who adapted brilliantly and showed tremendous control in the conditions took 2 wickets. Special thanks to Lucas White, Noah and Kobi for filling in for St Pats in the field and to Kobi who “accidently” took a screamer at cover to catch out Lucas Couse. Well done boys! Inaugural running race champion is Lucas Couse.

10A TEAM

Another great win for the mighty 10A’s. But it was tight! Week 1 saw us win the toss and bat with Elijah opening the batting and batting through the innings for 40*, a fantastic innings of great placement and concentration. Well done Elijah. We finished the first part of the innings 7 wickets down. As we went into bowl our control was excellent with only 10 in the field and we ended up 21 runs ahead of DLS Seagulls. Highlights were the bowling of Aiden who took two late wickets and a fantastic catch by Lachlan, which, if filmed, would have been in the running for the ‘KFC Classic Catches’ on Channel 9! Week 2 saw us bowling first on a very windy morning where we struggled with control of the ball in tough conditions. Wickets to Koby, Ben and H were awesome, and though the wind blew us around a bit, the Seagulls did not score a boundary in their innings, which is quite a feat! Well-done boys! Their batting left us with 37 to win with three wickets in hand. To begin a nervous Kade and Fred went out to the crease and batted well in a great partnership where Kade hit the only boundary of the day. As Kade got out Koby came in and batted well with Fred before he was out with only 6 runs left to get. Luke Dowse came in and batted very intelligently with Fred to get us across the line to win by one wicket! Fantastic batting on week 2 by Kade, Luke, Koby and especially Fred when they were feeling nervous and the game was getting tight. Well done boys. As Neil mentioned, a bit more practice with backing up and throwing and also, choosing correctly which end to throw to would have made a little more of an easy win for us. That’s something to work on at training. Well-done boys (On behalf of the team as well, we would like to extend our condolences to the Mann family who lost their Father and Poppy Claude recently. A fantastic ‘cricket’ man, and much loved family member, the 10A’s send their deepest sympathies to AJ, Lucas and the family at this tough time) Steve (on behalf of Neil and AJ)

10C TEAM

After a scintillating undefeated 3 match start to the season, our top of the table clash against Illawong proved too tough this round. The team showed great spirit and fight but were defeated 126 to 94. We won the toss with Tyson and Corey opening up the innings beautifully with 14 combined. Corey belted a couple of boundaries on his way to 12. Tyson unlucky to lose a few runs through dismissals to finish with 2. Will P joined Kyle as our next pair and they too batted well and were pretty evenly matched; 7 to Will and 8 to Kyle. Will M bagged the most runs in our batting card with 18. Plenty of quick singles between him and his partner Liam who got 9 runs. Our middle pair, Connor and Noah had a great combination with Connor contributing 9 runs not out and Noah 10 runs most of which were from slashing boundary strokes. In the lower order Maeve and Tom put together a nice partnership with Maeve getting the bragging rights adding 14 to our card. Tom acted as good foil and chimed in with 6. In the tail, Jack picked Corey for another dig which proved a good choice as both batsmen ran between the wickets with pace and purpose. Jack got 5 runs in total.

Page 10: Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER No. 4 · Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER ... Seagulls by 2 runs and the 10E’s with a strong win over Gymea Bay. Of the

Or bowling and fielding efforts this match under tough conditions and against quality batting were first class. Well done to all players. Will M was the pick of the bowlers with some superb line and length. At one point he was on a hat trick after smashing the stumps over with consecutive deliveries. 2 for 14 off his 4 great overs. Corey shouldered a lot of the workload this match with 5 overs which only went for 22 runs. The highlight was a Ricky Ponting esque run out throwing the stumps down from a fair distance. Kyle sent down 3 overs that yielded only 12 runs. He too effected a run out with some smart fielding and a nice return throw to the bowler. Will Price was tight with the ball, also finishing up with figures of 0/12 off his overs. Maeve toiled fiercely against their strong batters and restricted them nicely. None for 23 off 4 overs. Jack did some fine work behind the stumps as keeper and with ball in hand also bowled 4 overs that featured plenty of dot balls. None for 11. Our left arm paceman, Tyson was sharp as always and got nice bounce off the springy Heathcote pitch. Unlucky not to take several wickets he got 0/14 off 4. Liam was superb with ball and in the field this match. 2 classic catches and 2 for 19 off his 4 overs had plenty of admiration from the crowd. Connor turned in his usual bowling effort of speed and guile. 3 overs none for 20. We missed Tom in week 1 but upon his return in the second week he had an immediate effect in the field with a sensational direct hit run out from 45 degrees. With the ball straight and true; none for 2. Likewise, Noah had the first week off but was great for us in the second week restricting their batsmen to 2 runs off his over. This match was a great test for the team and they stood up strongly to the challenge. Better luck next match. For

their good all round performances Kyle and Noah shared the player of the match honours.

10E TEAM

Great win by the boys this round. We bowled first and we were very accurate not giving away too may sundries,

wickets went to Oscar (1), Broadie (1), Riley (1), Alex (2) along with Zach (2) were our outstanding bowlers this week,

Ethan bowled well with 1 wicket and Ollie also took 1. However special mention to Cooper who I think bowled the

best he has all year managing to get the ball down the other end a few times with only one bounce. Our fielding was

the best it has been all year with all the boys moving in the field to either field the ball or to back up the throw.

Everyone contributed with the bat, Ethan (13) and Cooper (7) got us off to a good start. Zach (13) and Alex (2) came

up against some good bowling but managed to survive. Riley (2) and Dylan (15) got us pretty close to the opposition

score by the end of week 1. Week 2 Mitch (19) and Oscar (8) got us off to a good start then Brodie (26) took the

opposition bowling apart with some superb pull shots, he was well supported by Ollie (12) who was all unforgiving on

the opposition bowlers. Mitchell Duric (9) and Rory (18) finished our innings off with a very competitive score.

Well Done Boys

12A TEAM

After a great start to the season with 3 wins from 3 we headed down to Solander to take on reigning 12A premiers

Seagulls. We knew it would be a tough game, made even more difficult with only being able to field 9 12A Dragons

players for the first week. Lucky our 2 little super subs - Ryan and Lucas were able to fill the gaps in the field. What a

great job they did. Thank you boys! The run chase would have been much bigger without you there helping out. The

team fielded well and were rewarded with 2 run outs and 6 catches. The bowling was also improved with the least

amount of extras for the season. After the 50 overs the Seagulls were 9/165.

The second week didn’t go to plan with early wickets and silly run outs with too much ball watching. Unfortunately

we were all bowled out in the 34th over for 61 runs.

Hopefully the team can bounce back this round when we play Bangor back at the Ridge.

Engadine won the toss and with the changing conditions of the morning selected to bat. The first 6 overs had our top order looking for runs with the loose ball, but there were not many coming our way from the Caringbah bowlers. After the first break Hayden and Luke put on a well deserved partnership of 59 to get the run rate going with Corey M 12, Ollie 21, Tyler 39 and Brayden 8 off the last two overs adding to the total off 158 off 50 overs. Caringbah top order came out on the front foot looking for the short balls and quick singles had them off to solid start. With the gale force winds of the morning our bowlers did their best in the conditions, but we need to be more aggressive in the field and put pressure on the batsman with more talking and supporting each other. Tyler and Lachlan each picked up a wicket each but Caringbah batted well with 2 for 207 off 50. Heads up boys this lost can be a positive for the next game with calling when battling and sharp field. 14C TEAM

This was a much anticipated ‘top of the table’ match between the shared competition leaders, Gymea Bay, just

ahead of us on Quot. Having lost the toss, Gymea Bay batted first.

Great bowling from Callum, leading the wicket charge with a very impressive four overs, 4/23; Thal also contributed

with four overs, 1/5 and Laythen 1/23. Gymea were teetering at 6/61.

After the 25 overs, Gymea were 6/106, which placed us in a very good position.

Hamish and Nathan opened the batting and after a solid opening partnership, we were 0/96 after 25 overs. Hamish

51 not out and Nathan 16 not out.

After building another promising innings, Week 2 started with Hamish having to retire unexpectedly at 51 not out.

With a very strong wind blowing in from the south, we resumed batting. After repeatedly replacing the bails, it was

decided and agreed to leave them off the stumps!

Three quick wickets feel and we soon went from 0/96 to 3/100.

Page 12: Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER No. 4 · Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Inc NEWSLETTER ... Seagulls by 2 runs and the 10E’s with a strong win over Gymea Bay. Of the

Jay came out to bat with Nathan, with another strong partnership looking promising. Jay’s batting continues to

improve, with strong offside shot making and anything down the leg side was dispatched to the boundary. After a

patient innings which included three boundaries and looking comfortable at the time, Nathan was dismissed for a

very well made 27; especially has he suddenly had to become the backbone of the innings after Hamish’s retirement.

Jay went on to score 14, until he was dismissed after being run out. Remember the golden rule boy’s, never run on a

misfield and also make you calls early and loud! Great batting Jay, keep it up, back yourself and go for it buddy!

Another two quick dismissals and we were 7/139.

Callum (17 no) and Laythen (18 no) came together at the crease, all fired up for quick runs in a real effort to help post

a competitive total. Commonsense batting combined with dispatching the wide deliveries, allowed for a 38 run

partnership and final innings total after 25 overs, 7/177.

Gymea came to the crease requiring 72 runs to win. Wickets to Laythen and Taj, put pressure on Gymea, but again,

short band wide bowling allowed for easy runs in what was a tight situation. The run chase was secured in the 40th

over. The 41 conceded extras also hurt us in a low run chase.

Congratulations to Callum on bowling 6 overs, 4/42 and 17 not out; Laythen, 9 overs, 2/41 and 18 not out; Thal, 4

overs, 1/5. Congratulations to Nathan Allen on a gritty 27; Jay continues to improve out of sight with his 14; and the

backbone of our batting, 51 not out for Hamish.

This is our first loss of the season boy’s in unpredictable circumstances. Continue to train hard, learn from one

another (and your coach!), encourage one another and remember, your contribution to the team will make a

difference on the field!

Thank you to Gary for filling in for me on the first week.

Steve, Coach 14C’s

16A TEAM

Round 4 saw the 16A’s back to full team of 11. After winning the toss the team went in to bat. Unfortunately it

wasn’t a great batting display with the team all bowled out for 90 runs.

Week 2 started much more promising with the fall of wickets and keeping the run rate down. Caringbah did get a few

runs towards the end of the innings but with 9 wickets down, finishing the innings with 162.

With extra time we were sent into bat again but this time the boys started strongly scoring 51 off only 7 overs. If only

we batted the same the week before.

Good Luck boys for Round 5 Vs Bangor.
