Engage Wellness is the medically-based way to get and stay healthier
A MESSAGE FROM JEANNIE...
Dear Engage Wellness Family,
It is with mixed emotions that I share with you that my last day at Engage
Wellness will be September 14th. I have accepted an Associate Professor
in Health Professions position at Nebraska Methodist College. I will be in
charge of the Master of Science in Wellness & Health Promotion
Management program (WHPM). In addition to teaching in the WHPM
program, I will also be teaching in the Doctorate of Education (EDD)
program.
Although I am very excited about my new opportunity, I will miss all of you! Please know that I am
honored that you trust us enough to share such an important part of your life, your wellness journey,
with us! It’s been rewarding to see the many health improvements that have been made by our
participants over the years. You are all an inspiration to me!
I am at ease knowing that I’m leaving Engage Wellness in the very capable hands of Heather, Sara,
Chris, the PT Work Study employees, and our contracted fitness instructors.
Thank you for your support over the years! If you are on Facebook or Linkedin, I’d love to connect with
you and keep in touch!
Love,
Jeannie

learn about your interests. At the end of their six-week rotation, they
will develop an educational presentation for those who are interested in

JOE ADAMS FEATURED IN “MEET ME AT THE GYM” 8/23/18
Kelsey Stewart, World-Herald Staff Writer, featured Joe Adams, one of our
Engage Wellness participants in her Meet Me at the Gym segment on
August 23, 2018.
Joe has an amazing story. Four years ago he had a heart attack. In spite of
undergoing numerous procedures to fix his heart, it failed again. He was told
that he needed a heart transplant. At that time he weighed 340 lbs, smoked
2 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day, and had type II diabetes. In order to get on
the heart transplant list he needed to lose weight, address his diabetes and
adopt a healthy lifestyle. It took Joe two years to get on the heart transplant
list. He has lost 140 lbs, quit smoking and no longer has diabetes.
Awaiting his heart, Joe wanted to get in the best shape possible. Because of his condition he was
denied membership in a couple commercial gyms. He heard about Engage Wellness at one of his
LVAD support groups a year ago and joined the next day. Currently he works out six days a week
and plans to continue this lifestyle for the rest of his life.

Q&A Session with Owen Neary:
Q: How long have you been coming to Engage Wellness?
A: I’ve been coming for 15 months. I had been retired for some time, used to bike and did a decent
amount of walking. Upon reaching my mid-eighties with some more aches and pains my family
suggested checking out Engage Wellness.
Q: What activities do you participate in?
A: We have some commercial property that takes some attention as does the yard at home. The
difference is one pays rent and the other takes physical labor. Do some volunteer work. Served
on the committee that built The Heart Ministry Center at 24th
and Binney Street. Serve funerals at
our parish church.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Engage Wellness?
A: The facility is outstanding, equipment is very appropriate for the membership and the staff is
pleasant and professional. Quite honestly I’ve not achieved my attendance goals yet, but I’m
working on it. I enjoy meeting other members.
Q: How has your motivation to exercise changed, since you started coming here?
A: My Motivation seems to ebb and flow, but it gets better with each sense of improvement in
strength and flexibility. It’s motivating to witness the determination of others.
Q: What advice would you give other Engage participants, to help them achieve their fitness
goals?
A: I like what Linda L. said in the June Newsletter. “Be steadfast in your belief that regular exercise
does make a difference”. It does make a difference!
Q: How has exercise helped manage any chronic conditions?
A: Having had two back surgeries and 20 years of diabetes, I may have used those issues as an
excuse not to exercise. That was a mistake I’m trying to overcome.
Q: Any tips for successful aging you would like to share?
A: Watching the evening news can be exasperating not only for its content but for the never ending
barrage of pharmaceutical commercials… “ask your doctor if you should take this or that drug.”
Of course some medications are certainly necessary. Also helpful is a consistently positive
attitude that is loving, kind and understanding.
A few facts about me:
Born and raised in Omaha; Creighton graduate; 18 months in infantry in Korea post war. Married
Betty in 1958; 6 great children. Spent 10 years at the old Brandies store, 5 as a buyer and 5 as the
personnel director. Then 17 exciting years at a growing Omaha computer supply company, which
was fun but the company was acquired by a large eastern corporation. Then that corporation was
acquired by an even larger eastern corporation! That was no fun at all, so I left and found a rather
small business to purchase. That meant a lot of work, but it was fun to be my own boss. A son now
owns that business and it’s fun to watch him succeed. We’ve had Creighton basketball tickets for 40
years, fun to watch. My advice: Stay steadfast and have some fun!
ACTIVE AGING WEEK!
September 23rd - 29th
Initiated in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), Active Aging Week takes

Paula is working on some fun activities to keep us engaged and moving. Stay tuned for upcoming
