THANK YOU NAMES AND THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU HERE IN MY HOME STATE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK WITH YOU TODAY. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE THE WORK YOU ARE DOING ACROSS THE STATE TO SAVE LIVES AND REDUCE HARM FROM SEPSIS AND WE ARE HONORED TO BE WORKING WITH YOU TO HELP SUPPORT YOUR EFFORTS WE UNDERSTAND THAT FIXING SEPSIS IS BOTH SIMPLE AND COMPLEX ALL AT THE SAME TIME. HAVING ALL HOSPITALS IMPLEMENT SEPSIS PROTOCOLS AND REPORTING IS A GREAT PLACE TO START AND A CRITICAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE BUT WE HAVE LEARNED THAT THERE IS MUCH MORE TO FIXING SEPSIS THAN FIXING WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE FINALLY GET TO THE HOSPITAL. I AM HERE TO SPEAK WITH YOU ABOUT ONE OF THOSE OTHER COMPONENTS – PUBLIC EDUCATION AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE OUR PUBLIC MORE AWARE. SY SYMS “AN EDUCATED CONSUMER IS MY BEST CUSTOMER” WELL I THINK AN EDUCATED PUBLIC MAKES FOR A BETTER HOSPITAL CUSTOMER. NEXT SLIDE

AS YOU CAN SEE WE ARE COMMITTED TO SAVING LIVES AND REDUCING HARM FROM SEPSIS WE HAVE BEEN WORKING AT THIS FOR 10 YEARS NOW AND WHEN WE STARTED ONLY 19% OF AMERICAN ADULTS HAD HEARD OF SEPSIS THAT NUMBER IS NOW AT 55% AND WE ARE GETTING MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION VISITS TO OUR WEBSITE SEPSIS.ORG FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM SEPSIS, TREATING SEPSIS, OR DEVELOPING INNOVATIONS AROUND SEPSIS THE SUCCESS WE HAVE HAD HAS LARGELY BEEN A RESULT OF OUR FOCUS ON PARTNERSHIPS. DR. FOSTER GESTON FROM NEW YORK ONCE SAID TO ME THAT “FIXING SEPSIS IS LIKE “BOILING AN OCEAN” THAT STUCK WITH ME AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER IF WE ARE GOING TO BEAT IT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. THE PUBLIC AND OUR HEALTH PROVIDERS ARE BECOMING MORE AWARE OF SEPSIS EACH DAY CMS HAS NOW TAKEN THIS IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD WITH THE HIIN SEPSIS AFFINITY GROUP AND WE ALSO HAVE A SEPSIS PROCESS MEASURE IN PLACE, MORE HEALTH PROVIDERS HAVE SEPSIS SCREENING PROTOCOLS IN PLACE, THERE IS MORE RESEARCH ON SEPSIS, SO WE KNOW MORE ABOUT ITS IMPACT, AND THE AFTER – EFFECTS ON SURVIVORS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS AND MORE INNOVATION IS HAPPENING IN HOSPITALS AND IN INDUSTRY THAT WILL HELP US BETTER DIAGNOSE AND TREAT SEPSIS ALSO - OUR MISSION AT SEPSIS ALLIANCE - “TO SAVE LIVES AND REDUCE SUFFERING “ - IS WELL UNDER WAY AND OUR VISION – A WORLD IN WHICH NO ONE IS HARMED BY SEPSIS - HAS GONE FROM A FANCIFUL NOTION TO SOMETHING IMAGINABLE NEXT SLIDE PLEASE

The Need for Public Education

Presenter

Sepsis is the #1 killer of children in the world

I do not know what the common signs of sepsis are in children

I can identify the symptoms of someone having a stroke

Sepsis is a non-threatening condition in children

Children can only get sepsis if they are already in the hospital

There are no long-lasting effects on children after having sepsis

NOT JUST THE PUBLIC NEED EDUCATION Early findings from the Sepsis Alliance/Lippincott Nursing Survey*

• CONNECTION TO LOW PUBLIC AWARENESS • 68% of respondents say that when families are told their loved ones have sepsis, most have never heard of it. • 28% of respondents say that families are often not told that their loved ones have sepsis.

• SOME GOOD NEWS • 23% of respondents are seeing more patients diagnosed with sepsis compared to the previous year because it

is a priority in their facility to identify sepsis (68%) and trained to recognize it (63%) • Nearly 80% of hospital respondents gave their facility a passing grade on the key clinical aspects of treating

sepsis • SOME TROUBLING NEWS

• 19% of hospital respondents felt their facility is not well prepared for a patient with sepsis • Only 13% of respondents say their facility has a sepsis team in their facility to support the treatment of

sepsis. • 60% gave a failing grade for proving post-sepsis support to families and patients

* Not for release

Presenter
Presentation Notes
SA is putting extra emphasis on pediatric sepsis to address this pressing need. Since children are not mini-adults, signs and symptoms, and treatment must be addressed differently. By instituting Erin’s Campaign for kids, we are encouraging nurses who work in pediatric settings.
