Exercise 1 The Norman Conquest 1066 1. Normandy, France (French-speaking but originally Vikings) 2. South-East 3. Who was to become king after king Edward the Confessor died (Edward's

brother-in-law was chosen but William said he had been promised the crown by Edward)

4. Great influence on culture, in architecture, legal system, language Exercise 2 Video Overview of UK history Tenacity = vasthoudendheid, extinction = uitsterven, ondergang, successive = opeenvolgend, greedy = hebzuchtig, crumbled = ten onder gaan, abandon = verlaten, future course = toekomst plan, vulnerable = kwetsbaar, decisive = doorslaggevend, elude = ontgaan, banished = verbannen. Text 2 Apart from the Norman conquest, there are other reasons for the animosity between the French and the English:

§ There were battles over land and rightful heirs to the thrones in France, complicated by intermarriages between English and French aristocrats, (The Hundred Year War)

§ The two nations found allegiances with opposite camps in disagreements between other nations, (In the Napoleonic Wars, the Italian Wars, the War of the Spanish Succession and even in the American Revolutionary War)

§ Religious conflicts arose between Britain, a Protestant nation after the English Reformation, and the Roman Catholic French

§ Anti-monarch protests in the French Revolution were sneered at with disdain by British royalists.

PERIODE 1 WEEK 3 UK: MEDIA Exercise 1 Newspapers in the UK 1. Tabloids are low quality papers with a lot of sex and sensational stories in them. 2. Rich women and their husbands (the sports supplements). 3. The Daily Mail has a very right-wing orientation which is also clearly shown in the paper. However, the stories in the Daily Mail often contradict each other and therefore should not be taken too seriously at all times. The paper is known for printing “alarmist” stories that should be taken with a grain of salt. It must be said that this tactic works very well for them. 4. Members of the Conservative Party are also called “Tories.” Since the Daily Telegraph is a supporter of the Conservatives, the switch to “Daily Torygraph” was easily made. 5. Although the broad-sheets have quite an influence, they are outsold by the Tabloids 4 to 1. 6-7. In the eighties people started using computers to print their papers, which meant the old print unions were redundant. This also meant that papers could survive with a far lower number of readers. Many papers also started fleeing Fleet Street, which, until the eighties, had been the place where all the papers were printed. 8. The London Evening Standard started giving their papers away for free. This resulted in an increase in copies printed of over 500%. They expect to be profitable again by 2012 and these profits will not come from the cover price (which is gone) but from advertising revenues. Engels culture class Tabloids(most populair) Mid market tabloids (aimed

Politics Exercise 1 Elizabeth I: the Ultimate Sovereign 1.a. Philip of Spain. 1.b. It started out fine but deteriorated; in 1588 he tried to attack England and seize the crown. He did not succeed, however, and was beaten by the English fleet. 2. to restore the value of the coins: so the opposite of how it is explained in the textà to lower the value of a coin by making it from a less valuable metal. 3. Elizabeth was suspected of a conspiracy with sir Wyatt to seize the throne from Mary. 4.a. She was executed and the verdict was signed by Elizabeth herself. b. Kings and Queens, once anointed, were seen as ruling by God’s choice. No man (or woman) should undo this. Killing Mary was risky because Elizabeth herself showed that Kings and Queens were not untouchable. Exercise 2 Politics – people and places 1. the Prime Minister 2. the Queen 3. Members of Parliament 4. Houses of Parliament 5. the Conservative Party 6. the Labour Party

PERIODE 1 WEEK 6 UK: ART & LITERATURE Exercise 1 Shakespeare in Love - Britpop

1. Shakespeare has produced so much and was so versatile that it is hard to believe that his work was written by only 1 person. These days, the same goes for Disney: the Disney studios create a great amount of very diverse productions.

2. Pressure from the owner of the theatre who needs money to pay off his debts; and Shakespeare does not have any inspiration and needs to go looking for a muse.

3. Those roles were played by men.

4. Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ also tells the story of an impossible love. In this play, both main characters committed suicide (more or less accidentally) to be together.

5. Britpop bands were influenced by other British bands such as the Beatles (paragraph 1) and other bands (paragraph 3), and they aimed at British youth.

6. shy, anti-star personas of the early-'90s shoegazer bands, but also the dourness of American grunge and the faceless producers behind the growing electronic-dance underground. How? By their exuberance and desire for recognition

7. Too British: see question 1. Aimed at British youth. Only cult.
