38thNUS Students’ Engineering Club

Many students have often won-dered what Engin Club does,

and perhaps rightly so. As a Club, we pride ourselves in empowering students and assuming a backstage role.

Essentially, this becomes the reason why many students do not realize that all along they are being directed from behind. Remember Engin Rag? Engin Camp? Engin Orientation Week? Engin Welfare Giveaway? These are some of the many events spearheaded by the Club.

The NUS Students’ Engineering Club was first established in 1976. It remains the official faculty club and sole union representative of all undergraduates in the Faculty of Engineering.

The Club is highly regarded for its vital role in the academic and social

lives of nearly 6,000 full-time Engineering undergraduates, working closely with the faculty administration to provide the best for our fellow students.

Each academic year, a new Management Committee is elected to facilitate the various activities that seek to enhance the students’ experiences be-yond academic pursuits. Besides being the voice of the student body, Engin Club strives to connect to all Engineering undergraduates through our vi-brant initiatives and collabora-tion with the other engineering subsidiary clubs.

In the month of August, the 38th Management Committee was officially elected by the student population to succeed the outgoing 37thManagement Committee. It is our promise

to all students to do everything we possibly can to protect the interest of all Engineering students, both in terms of welfare and student life.

Should you ever encounter any problem, please do not hesitate to seek our help. Engin Club will forever step forward to assist its students.

We wish you a fruitful semester ahead.

- Hamza Naqvi, 38th President of Engin Club

SEMESTER 1

“As a freshie in Engineering, this first semester has been a new and eye opening experience. At first, I was hesitant to join

camps—the thought of making so many new friends in such a short amount of time seemed daunting. However, with hopes for a good beginning to the start of my NUS life, I decided to go all out, at-tending 3 different freshman events—Engin Camp, RAG, as well as ChESS camp. I met many like-minded individuals there that are now the friends I still hang out regularly for lunch and attend lec-tures together.I am grateful that I made the leap of faith to step out of my comfort zone, as these experiences really shaped how my student life in Engi-neering was like for me—interesting, fun and exciting. Although there were times when I questioned if I made the right decision to take Chemical Engineering as my major, it always gets better when I pull through the assignments and reports through the help of my seniors and friends alike. Thank you! ”

“Year 2, Semester 1 has been the best semester yet (for me)! Mainly because of my carefully planned timetable, relatively fun mods and no commitments heh! There’s more time for me to focus on studies, and other areas of life too. All in all, I’m really thankful for everything that’s happened and I hope finals is gonna turn out okay!”

“This first semester of my final year was unexpectedly hectic. I thought, “last year already, will have more free days!” But nope (because of FYP, DP and 10,000 other projects). Yet through all the busyness, I’m thankful for the lessons learnt and little NUS experiences that will accompany me after I graduate. Most importantly, I thank God for the friends who have made it so much more bearable and who ill also, hopefully, continue the journey after NUS alongside me.”

Interfaculty Games15/16

In the recently concluded NUS Inter-faculty Games 2015, 10 different faculties and Yale-NUS College competed for the coveted

Tan Chorh Chuan Trophy. After weeks of hard work, sweat and tears by our very own budding athletic engineers, the faculty of Engineering emerged as overall first runners-up with a total of 59 points!

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our athletes for their excellent effort and thank everybody for their continuous support.

Finals are coming and you need somewhere else other than your home to study?

Check out these places that we have compiled!

1. PC clusterOpening Hours: 8am - 10pm

Tucked away at E2, this area filled with desktops is especially apt for students to study at. Wifi is available for you to catch up on your

webcasts or surf the Internet. If you have engineering related assign-ments which makes use Matlab and Solidworks, you can access them

through the desktops available. Plus, most of the desktops can function well (unlike those at Thinklab).

The only drawback is no food and drinks are allowed!

2. Collaborative CommonsOpening Hours: 24 hours

This is a hidden gem at Utown, with most people usually turning to the Mac or PC commons because they are not aware of this place. As the name suggests, this room promotes ‘collaboration’, in

particular group discussions as there are several room dividers and projectors available (in contrast to the other two commons, with pin-

drop silence). In addition, there are many charging points in this room for students to use. The commons are open for 24 hours and you can study there for as

long as you want! Tip: Be early as there are not many available seats!

3. Chinese LibraryOpening Hours: 8am – 10pm

For students who need silence when they are studying, you can visit the Chinese Library which is within walking distance from the

Computer Centre. The Chinese Library is not as crowded as the Central Library, so

students can be assured of seats. The charging points on the study tables also come in handy.

4. UTown StarbucksOpening Hours:

Monday - Friday 8am - 10pmSat - Sun 10am - 7pm

For students who like a cozy environment to study in with a cup of Toffee Nut Latte and Country Chicken Pie, you can head down to YIH

Starbucks located at level 3.With accessibilty to the priniting shop at the same level and Food

Junction right below, students do not have to worry about walking long distances for printing services and lunch/dinner!

Operation ORIONOperation Orion is a community service project spearheaded by the

Civil Engineering Club. As a well-established OCIP in NUS and Operation Orion has started making a difference spanning 10 different regions since the year 2000. In December this year, we are set to build a house and a water catchment area for the villagers in Prey Veng Prov-ince, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Engineering participants would have the chance to utilise their skills by participating in the entire construction from planning to completion. The service learning project is not solely limited to Civil Engineering students as we welcome applicants from all faculties! Diversity is the key to making a good team and we believe that each and every individual can contribute in their own ways.Apart from construction, participants will also get to engage with the locals through cultural exchanges, as we will be following the villagers lives to experience their daily activities such as farming. We will also be having a Christmas party for the HOPE orphanage.

Operation Orion will be off to Pnomh Penh from the 9th to 25th December, 2015. Find out more on http://operationorion.ceclub.sg or check out ‘Operation Orion’ on Facebook to stay updated!

ScrubUP!ScrubUP! is an inaugural youth expedition project (YEP) by students

from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. BME ScrubUP! 2015 wishes to help the overseas communities create the better future they have yearned for by empowering our friends with knowledge, skills and technologies to build a sustainable environment. ScrubUP! 2015 will be introducing the phonics syllabus into the orphanage to help with learning English, as well as completing the chicken coup project and spending Christmas with the children in the orphanage.

The ScrubUP! team will be visiting the UNACAS (Unaccompanied Association) orphanage in Pnomh Penh, Cambodia from the 13th to 27th December, 2015.

Do give them your fullest support, and feel free to follow their facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/bmescrubup) or instagram (@bmescrubup) for more information!
