Engineer’s Week 2 0 1 3 AWA R D S E V E N T FAISAL SYED, PE, PTOE 2013 ENGINEER OF THE YEAR Faisal Syed has been working in the Civil Engineering field for over 18 years. He finished his Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering from University of Texas at Austin and started working overseas for a Korean Company – Daewoo. He later received a Masters in Traffic and Transportation Engineering from University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). A member of Tau-Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon and other honor societies, he also actively participated in extra-curricular activities at School including serving as President of Institute of Traffic Engineers (ITE) – student chapter at UTA and later as a student chapter liaison for ASCE. In 1995, he started working for City of Dallas, Department of Public Works and later worked as a General Engineering Consultant for DART on their light rail expansion project. He also worked at Walter P. Moore Dallas office as the Managing Director of their Civil Engineering operations for a few years before branching out with his wife to establish an engineering firm Urban Engineers Group. He now works as a principal partner at Urban Engineers Group, a minority owned business specializing in providing municipal infrastructure engineering services. A licensed professional engineer PE, he also received Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification from ITE and is also LEED certified by USGBC for leadership in environmental excellence design. Mr. Syed is also involved in many professional and civic organizations in various capacities including serving as a Board Member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and for Trinity Strand Trail in Dallas. He volunteered as a math tutor for high school students and previously received Mentor of the Year Award from DISD and Golden Oak Award from the Dallas City Managers’ office. From Public Works to Private Development, he knows how to make projects “sustainable”. A recipient of the prestigious Young Engineer of the Year Award from Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2003, Faisal is an expert in developing creative infrastructure engineering solutions in congested urban centers. A native of Lahore, Pakistan, he moved to the United States at the age of 20 and has made Dallas his home where he lives with his wife Nilsa Luna and son Jahan Syed.
