    I INTRODUCTION

This r epor t i s being publ ished to f ami l ia r ize a l lin te res ted agencies and organiza t ions with the engin-eer ing design changes made to th e Stoner 63 Weapon System.Hereaf te r the new des igna t ion for the Stoner 63 WeaponSystem w i l l be Stoner 63A Weapon System.

    I I BACKGROUND

    The Stoner 63 Weapon System has been undergoingt e s t s and eva lua t ions s ince August 1963 when ARPA/AGILEevaluated th e Stoner 63 Machine Gun, c a l i b e r .223 o r5.56mm. Approximately 2400 Stoner 63 Weapons of var iousconf igura t ions have been manufactured to da te .

    The United S ta t e s Marine Corps, United S ta t e s Army,and the United S ta t e s A ir Force have conducted Engineering ,Service, and Troop t e s t s to determine the Stoner 63 WeaponSystem's mil i t a ry po te n t i a l . T es t r epor t s a re presen t ly

    The r e s u l t s o f these t e s t s indica ted t h a t cer t a indes i rab le c ha ra c t e r i s t i c s were lacking in the Stoner 63Weapon System, and ce r ta in def i c i enc ies required correc-t i o n . Modif icat ions were made to the System t o c o r r e c tthese def i c i enc ies and fu r the r modif ica t ions were made toimprove the Stoner 63 Weapon System's r e l i a b i l i t y as afunct ion o f normal produc t improvement.

The new s ty le t r igger guard i ss lot ted to permit the new safety lever to move backand for th , and i s welded to the t r igger housing. The detachable t r igger guard wasoriginal ly put on the Stoner 63 Weapon System topermit the operator to remove the t r igger guard and

The Stoner Weapon System barrels have beenhardened by an addi t ional manufacturing process whichwi l l provide the barre l with a harder chamber, bore, and outside surface. This prevents malfunctions dueto the fac t tha t sand and/or d i r t enter ing the chamberwil l imbed i t s e l f in the cart r idge case instead of thechamber wal ls . The wire folding stock consists of14 par ts and is f l a t against the receiver when folded. The polyvinyl chloride coating on the wire stock e l i -minates the cold metal contact with the operator 'sface and helps deaden noise during movement throughunderbrush.

The feed cover was made of stampings which werewelded together . The stamped cover was funct ional ,which required extreme f latness and squareness, andwas readi ly susceptible to damage in .the f ie ld . I thad four hinges requiring extreme care in weldingto prevent misalignment of the feed cover to thereceiver . The cover was open in many areas, whichpermitted d i r t and dust to enter the mechanism duringexercises in the f ie ld . Closing th i s feed cover onthe receiver when the bol t was forward caused dis-tor t ion and bending, which in turn caused it to mal-function.
