It’s a really exciting time in engineering and manufacturing here on the Island. We’ve got over 200 companies that employ over 3,000 people! The majority of these are engaged in ‘high technology’ areas like global aviation and working with major names like Rolls Royce, Boeing, Airbus and military products too. Challenging, rewarding and brilliant career prospects!

The future looks bright too with engineering and manufacturing sectors forecast to grow by up to 10% ensuring demand for skilled employees remains high. There couldn’t be a better time to get your new career started!

When you make a career in engineering or manufacturing, you’re making a pretty sensible choice. Just look around you – our world is full of new technology, and every bit of that technology will involve engineering and manufacture. And demand is growing, so long term prospects really are excellent.

What are the entry requirements?

A secondary education and a willingness to learn, in particular, an interest in making things and practical Engineering. A minimum Grade D in GCSE English and Grade D in GCSE Mathematics would be an advantage, but should not deter mature applicants.

What’s the course about?

The course is 2 years duration, five days full time at the IOM College, 9-4pm. The course is a mixture of theory and practical, biased towards the practical side. The syllabus has been created by the Isle of Man College and the sector and therefore develops the skills that companies need, and will employ. The course also involves a six weeks paid work placement programme during the summer break between years 1 and 2.

What Subjects will I study?

Year 1 The curriculum will encompass the City & Guilds Performing Engineering Operations Diploma at Level 2. This will certify your practical work in the first year dependent on your entry qualifications. You will study one day per week at BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering or the City & Guilds 2850 Level 2 Certificate in Engineering in Year 1 with progression to Level 3 in year 2. In addition all students will complete the City & Guilds Employability & Personal Development (C&G 7546) and the BTEC Level 2 Qualification in Engineering (Specialist: Manufacturing) plus First Aid Training. There would also be additional qualifications offered in Numeracy and Literacy depending upon the entry level of the student.

Year 2 In Year 2, your training will predominately be applied to CNC equipment. You will continue with your BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering or the City & Guilds 2850 Level 3 Certificate in Engineering. During the year your training will predominantly be applied to CNC (Computer Numerical Control) equipment like that used in sector companies.

Year 3/4 Having successfully completed Years 1 and 2 and passed the qualifications and displayed the correct attitude/approach to the course, you should gain employment with a sector company and can then continue developing your skills via a formal Apprenticeship. This could take 1 or 2 further years depending on your abilities and desires.
